We came here on a Saturday night for dinner. We had a reservation and were seated pretty quickly. The ambiance was very lively and our server was super friendly! The food took a while to come out, but it seemed to be a busy night. We ordered: - Three Cheese Artichoke Dip - the dip was creamy and delicious! The bread was slightly crunchy on the outside but soft on the inside. - Impossible Sausage Lasagna - honestly this didn't yard like anything too special. It tasted like regular lasagna. - Almost Bolognese - my favorite dish! It was so creamy and flavorful and I loved the pea protein and the noodles. - Fancy Lemonade (Peach) - the lemonade was pretty good and the peach syrup/flavoring was a fun addition. - Rustic Bread Pudding - I really liked the bread pudding! Slightly crunchy on the bottom and die to the nuts but the inside of the bread was soft and delicious! I also liked that it wasn't too sweet. - Hot Mess - this was also solid! We came for dinner on a reservation. We sat outside on the patio with a nice ambience with pretty lights. The menu is not very expansive, we didn't really have any of the main dishes calling our name so we stuck mostly to appetizers. We really enjoyed the bread and pesto butter as well as the artichoke dip. We also had the French onion potato gratin which was rich with wonderful flavor. Service was pretty good until the end- it was near closing and they could have been kinder about clearing us out of the restaurant. What a find; came here for a friend's birthday. There were drinks for starters - we had ordered the artichoke dip, but the server forgot to put in the order, which was realized upon the salads coming out. There was warm bread service with yummy kale butter. The mains: 2 orders of the 'wine forest risotto' = boneless Wagyu short rib with wild mushrooms, parmesan cheese it was sublime, melted in your mouth, very heavy. There also an order of the 'heritage beef and pork Bolognese', another home run! Lastly of course, dessert consisting of their 'hot mess' a chocolate flourless brownie, with marshmallow, pistachio ice cream, salted caramel - screaming goodness. Service was on point. There is no tipping as it is included in the pricing. Ambiance is casual; there is both indoor & outdoor seating. If you're in Calistoga you definitely need to eat at Lovina's. The food was delicious, and the ambiance was so welcoming and cozy. The Heritage Pork & Beef Bolognese was sooo good! And the dish is a very good size. For appetizers we really enjoyed the Three Cheese Artichoke Dip and the Wine Country Bruschetta. Both were a good size to share with 4 people. For dessert I highly recommend getting the Sampler! The was service was good, the staff were very friendly and helpful. The restaurant vibe is quiet, calm and intimate. They even had blankets available in case you are cold! There was seating mostly inside, on two different floors, and some seating on their patios. I suggest making a reservation. If 1 could give 6 stars to the mushroom bisque and handmade pasta Bolognese I would. Absolutely life changing. Dinner service fell a bit flat, staff wasn't too attentive. Also wish they'd improve the ventilation indoors, it was extremely stuffy and hot. But we dined on Wine Wednesday and got a good deal on a bottle with our meal. Lovina is a beautiful restaurant in an old house right at the beginning of Lincoln Avenue after you turn right from Highway 128. They have a very nice outdoor patio, along with indoor seating in the elegant dining room. All of the menu items are beautifully presented, and flavor combinations are top notch. For appetizer, we picked the Local Heirloom Tomato Salad. That was delicious, with so much going on. The 25-year old balsamic vinegar came in a little squeezer tube so you could apply on your own. I had the Seared Wild Dayboat Scallops, and I cleaned my plate. This dish had three large scallops, perfectly cooked on the bed of risotto and wild mushrooms. My wife had the Heritage Bolognese, which they are somewhat famous for. Both dishes were very rich and savory. The restaurant has a spectacular wine list, which is a must-have in Calistoga. We've had the great wines from Tedeschi Family before, but Lovina had a twist we hadn't seen before. In summer, they hade an option to serve the Tedeschi Valdiguie red chilled, and we opted for that. It was such a great surprise, and complimented all of our food so well. The entire wait staff here was very polite and attentive, too. read more

Incredible Food, Heart, and History! Lovina has become one of my favorite spots in Calistoga. Located in a beautiful 1904 historic home, the ambiance perfectly captures that cozy Northern California warmth. I especially loved the heated outdoor seating on the first floor, making for a perfectly comfortable al fresco dinner. A few highlights from my visit: I truly admire their "no-tip" model. They provide the staff with real living wages and benefits, and that's reflected in the excellent, genuine service. I started with the Sonoma Apple Salad (requested no blue cheese) and absolutely devoured it. So fresh! As someone who is lactose intolerant, I haven't been able to eat lasagna for years. Seeing the Impossible Sausage Lasagna on the menu was a game-changer. It was savory, delicious, and so satisfying to finally enjoy one of my favorite dishes again! Don't forget to say hi to the "Hog Killer" bear statue in his party hat on your way in. This place has so much character! What a fantastic operation! The Wife and I had taken a weekend trip to Calistoga, and after a morning and afternoon of wine tasting, we returned to the cottage to find out the power was down for the entire town. The outage continued for several hours. That evening, we strolled down Lincoln Avenue downtown noticing every restaurant was closed (including where we had reservations). A lady suggested looking at Lovina further down the road as she saw people dining. Lovina was open, and it turns out they invested 30K into a generator and it was serving them well--the restaurant was bustling. We approached the host stand and asked if there was a chance to get seated without reservations, and the host pointed at the bar and said "That's all I have." and we took it. The first thing you notice on the menu is that tipping is not expected. They state clearly 30% of the revenue goes to staff and they have 401K, paid vacation, and half of the medical covered for full and part time staff, and the food is priced to reflect those costs. The thing is, the costs were well within the costs you see for other restaurants in the area that expect tips. Add to that, the staff is overwhelmingly competent and seem to be happy. We watched them feed well over 100 customers, meet every reservation, and yet kept our drinks refreshed. The food was delicious, we both had the beef and pork bolognese, and their mocktails were tasty. Often times, the true value of a business is revealed at their worst times, and this team really put on a show. Highest recommendation, sixth star if there were one. read more

Restaurant staff should be paid a reasonable wage without having to rely on tips - there were so many vegetarian and vegan options. We came at 6PM on a Sunday and were seated immediately! Sourdough Levain (4/5) - the bread itself is okay, but the real star is the whipped kale pistachio pesto butter! It's so yummy, I wish I could bottle it up. It's butter but with all the earthiness of the greens. It's topped with a black flaky salt - chefs kiss! Impossible Sausage Lasagna (3/5) - would pass on this dish next time. The lasagna was cooked well, but something was missing IMO. Going right to the food, because the short rib truffle risotto was one of the BEST things I've ever eaten. Like explosions in my mouth goodness. Absolutely decadent, I'm sure filled with butter, but soooo worth it. The short rib was wine-rich and fell apart when you pulled on it, and the risotto was - just believe me, Top 10 bites. The place is reminiscent of other upscale restaurants built into an old Victorian (or such) mansion, elegant and intimate. The service was attentive. First time to Lovina based on our friends who live locally. What a find! In an old home with a real charm to it. The story of the history and how the restaurant got its name are quite intriguing. There's a nice patio one covered and one that's open. The covered patio has heaters all the way around. We had the wine risotto with short rib and the Japanese eggplant for entrees. Both were fabulous. The fried mushroom bites were a tasty app. The Hot Mess dessert - brownie and ice cream with caramel sauce were a perfect way to finish the meal with my cappuccino. Unfortunately my vegetarian wife doesn't like anything that tastes like meat so she didn't go for any of the impossible meat dishes. I had the endive cups with hummus. Spot on. Next up was the mushroom bisque soup. Truly spectacular. One of the best soups I've had anywhere. For the main event I went for the short ribs. They were plated and cooked perfectly. This may be one of my favorite new restaurants in the Bay Area! As a vegetarian, the options on this menu are plentiful. And the dishes taste SO fresh, like it's farm to table. The impossible lasagna was so well made, and the mushrooms were cooked so perfectly with the cheese, sauce and perfect portion of impossible "meat." Such a creative dish. And the apple salad was unreal, the apples and blue cheese and all the ingredients worked so well together. The dessert sampler was perfect- the perfect portions for two people. Each one was so unique and different, wish I would order the full size one of each one (although the bread pudding was my least favorite). I also love how this place is female owned, and the menu contains the story of how the place was founded. So many personal touches throughout the place, I would definitely come back to Calistoga just for this restaurant! I've been back a few years after and the portions are definitely double tripled for the pork bolognese which is great. This evening, we sat on the outdoor patio which has a heater above. It is pretty strong but better than not having it especially right now in January. We ordered the gem salad, the pork bolognese, and the beef cheeks as well as their sour dough w/pistachio butter. The gems salad was delicious and ample with avocado, the sour dough bread was so soft yet crispy on the edges and the butter green and to die for!! The bolognese was good as usual i had alot left over! And the beef cheeks my bf and i really enjoyed, they were fall off the bone and the asparagus and gnocchi were fresh and soft! Thanksgiving dinner done right! We were only three for Thanksgiving this year - my other half had to work - so it seemed silly to make a huge mess cooking a huge feast. And I'll share a little secret with you, perhaps an unpopular opinion: Turkey/Thanksgiving is not my favorite meal. I took my wife and kids to Lovina for Valentine's Day weekend. I had been wanting to go for several years so we finally went. This weekend featured. a pre-fixe menu and a scaled down version of their normal menu. Upon walking into the restaurant I found it to be a cozy atmosphere as the restaurant is a converted Victorian-era house. We were seated upstairs in a charming room where dined for the next two hours. My wife ordered the pre-fixe with steak and wild mushroom bisque. The amuse bouche and mushroom bisque were an A+. My wife thought the steak was just average though and in hindsight would have ordered something else. I ordered the mushroom bites as an appetizer and halibut for my entree; both of which were great, while my 8 year old had the heritage pork and beef bolognese which he liked as well. Though the restaurant doesn't have a formal kids menu they offered my daughter buttered pasta or marinara sauce so she had the buttered pasta. Finally, we all shared my wife's browniemisu for dessert. I'm not much of a dessert person but I really liked this. Overall: the restaurant is quite pricey due to using the funds to pay the staff well with insurance and 401k. They do not accept tips however. While I couldn't afford to eat here regularly I have no issue with this approach. The restaurant is a great place for romantic dates, and is welcoming of kids which is nice for parents. Livorna is one of those neighborhood Italian places where the kitchen still cares. Went for a big family gathering and enjoyed the entire experience. The bolognese is the dish to beat. This is the real version: meat-forward, slow-cooked, the kind of ragù where you can taste the hours on the stove. Tossed with pasta that holds the sauce instead of fighting it. Most American "bolognese" is tomato sauce with ground beef. This is what the dish actually tastes like in Bologna, and that's a much harder thing to find than the menu count would suggest. She wanted to check out this restaurant, which was located right in the small town of Calistoga, walking distance from our hotel Doc Wilkinson's. It's such a charming little restaurant! It feels like you're eating in someone's home, very homey and welcoming. It was quite easy to make a reservation (although it was a Wednesday night), and corkage was FREE on Wednesdays! Solid win. For food, we ordered the Fried Mushroom Polenta Bites ($15), the Wine Forest Risotto ($44, wild mushrooms, mushroom stock, pea shoots, fontina, parmesan, black truffle butter), the Heritage Pork & Beef Bolognese ($45 - fresh fettuccine, mirepoix, Calabrian chili, parmesan, breadcrumbs), and the Chef's Dessert Tasting ($21, bite sized versions of our bread pudding, hot mess, sundae funday, and "snickers bar"). My favorite for the food was the fried mushroom polenta bites, delicious with the aioli. I ordered the Risotto for my entree, which was decent, but also too rich. It needed something else to help balance the richness - maybe a side like vegetables, or maybe more risotto vs. parmesan and butter. The portions were large though, and each of us took at least half the plate home. I enjoyed the Chef's tasting, which was a little bit of everything, but there were some pieces that only had one piece, vs. some at two (check out the picture) - like they forgot to put it on the plate or something. So weird. The service was friendly and attentive. There is no tipping at this restaurant; instead, they just fold it into the prices, and honestly the meal was not bad in price considering. The ambiance and service were both outstanding and Lovina did a great job catering to several dietary needs and restrictions. Lovina is very gluten-free and vegetarian-friendly. Our group shared the following appetizers: Endive Cups: Great crunchy endives, and the hummus puree was outstanding. Spring Wine Country Bruschetta: Delicious crispy bread, with the creamy ricotta being this dish's star ingredient. Locally Famous Little Gems: A solid salad, with lots of fresh ingredients and good crunch. Whipped Burrata and Roasted Beets: The beets were perfectly cooked and the burrata was rich. The balsamic provided a good amount of acid. Warm Sourdough Levain: One of my favorite dishes of the night. The sourdough was outstanding and the pesto was creamy with great flavor. I got the Wine Forest Risotto for my main and it was delicious. The wagyu beef short rib was perfectly cooked and melted in my mouth. The parmesan and mushrooms added great umami and the butter creaminess. The mushroom stock was a little salty but did not detract from the dish's quality. We all shared several of the Chef's Dessert Tasting, with my favorites being the Sundae Funday and the "Snickers Bar." I would get the Sundae Funday if you decide to get one dessert. We booked a dinner reservation and showed up early. They were able to accommodate us and sit us right away. The staff were very welcoming and attentive. The food was incredible. We got the artichoke dip, halibut and short ribs. They were all expertly prepared. The short rib was the most tender we have ever had. No knife needed! Their cocktail menu features some unique drinks and we loved the ones we tried- I don't remember the names but one was a pepper infused vodka drink and the other a juniper leaf infused gin drink. There were special touches like providing us with signed cards from the staff and wine stoppers made by the owner, Jennifer Bennet, who creates locally made pottery you can purchase there. It is evident that significant love and care have gone into curating a delightful experience for patrons. I would definitely recommend Lovina. read more

My friend and I spent a couple of days in Calistoga and our first meal was at Lovina and what a welcome to the area! The ambiance was outstanding, with r&b playing and the patio being softly lit. Our server was kind, knowledgeable and made sure our wine glasses were never empty. And the food? Easily a top 5 meal of my life. We started with 2oz shooters of gazpacho, which were the perfect size to get a taste and not fill up too much too early. We shared the Warm Pinsa Romano which came with the most flavorful hummus, olive oil, and olives. For mains, I had the Almost Bolognese and made it "dirty" by adding truffle butter and melted cheese. I'm not a truffle fan typically, but had it recommended by another person who didn't like truffle at a winery and was not disappointed. Easily the best bolognese I've had. My friend had the Aubergine Athena and enjoyed it. For dessert we ordered the Hot Mess and it was the perfect wrap up to our meal and first night in Calistoga. A cute little spot on downtown Calistoga's main street, Lovina has a beautiful outdoor space that is super inviting on a warm day. While a smaller/limited menu, I give the restaurant major props - tip is included in the final bill because they provide their staff healthcare, etc. KUDOS to Lovina ownership. During our visit, we split the BLAT (bacon, lettuce, avocado, tomato) sandwich which was on a fantastic piece of sourdough and had this wonderful chipotle aioli/sauce. As for the experience, halfway through our meal the staff sat a couple directly next to us...on a patio that had no one else on it. It was awkward and uncomfortable for us both. Upon getting the bill, we were floored to see that the ice latte I received was ELEVEN DOLLARS (this is not Starbucks, folks). Nine for the latte and a two-dollar surcharge for oat milk (love being punished for being lactose intolerant). For being a brunch spot, you would think they would have a better handle on this, but this certainly left a bad taste in my mouth. Tons of other restaurant options in town, so I'll likely try those in the future. read more

We just got back from a week's stay in Calistoga. The area is full of great restaurants, but Lovina was by far the best meal of our vacation. The service was prompt and friendly, and my wife is a vegetarian, so she appreciated having many options to choose from. We started by splitting a little gem salad, which was fantastic. I had the Wine Forest Risotto, which was the best risotto I've ever had. My wife had the Almost Bolognese fettuccini, which was also very good. We had a bottle of Picayune Cellars grenache/syrah blend, which was excellent. I noticed that Piacyune has a tasting center in downtown Calistoga. Unfortunately, they were out of the blend we got, but I noticed they sold it for $39. Lovina charged $70 for the bottle, so that's less than the usual restaurant markup. We sat outside on the patio, which had a great vibe. They have some pretty serious outdoor heaters, which would enable the patio to be viable year-round. We liked this place so much that we almost returned a second time despite only being in Calistoga for 4 nights. We look forward to going back! read more

Dinner on a Saturday night. Last seating- a bit of a rough start as it was our first time there and one of my friends couldn't walk stairs due to a injured ankle and our table was on the 2nd floor - accessible by stairs only. I did ask for a bottom seating if possible I got a little bit of hesitation, but in the end they pulled through. Now let's talk about the important stuff the food. Everything we had was amazing. I was especially impressed with their halibut croquettes - one of the best things I've ever had. Their cauliflower pickles were delicious and fresh. The vegan Bolognese, along with the actual Bolognese were absolutely amazing and my halibut was perfectly cooked. Dessert was a pure surprise. Every single thing tasted amazing and we got the little sampler size which was just enough. If you are a dessert lover, do not get the sample sizeget the Normal size. read more

NO TIP necessary! 30% of the tab, plus 25% of any pottery you purchase goes to the employees who work very diligently to offer beyond exceptional service.. 10% of all pottery sales goes to the local food bank. WoW! Thats what we get for supporting women in business and a business done right. They take care of the work family. Now the food.... OMGoodness. Fresh flavors, fresh food, exceptionally paired ingredients. The presentation looks like the staff have been trained for presenting artwork. We stopped here for dinner on the first night of our honeymoon and I am SO glad we did! The service was amazing - they even gave us a little card and handmade ceramic wine stopper. The food was delicious - I had the risotto and my husband had the halibut. The halibut crostini and gnocchi however, were the game changers.
