Was refused service 1 minute after they "closed". Doors unlocked, people eating inside, people still waiting for their food. They were still cooking burgers and just threw some fries in the fryer. Bad business practice to refuse anyone service no matter what time. If your doors are still unlocked and your still cooking food don't refuse service. That's customer service 101. read more

I'm not usually one to complain about my food taking awhile but this occurrence was unacceptable. I walked in and ordered my 3 sandwiches like normal, so I sat there while 3 other people ordered and got there food. After 30 minutes I decided to politely go ask how much longer until my food would be done. In response the worker said, "larger orders take longer" and,"there is only 2 of us working." We only ordered 3 sandwiches with fries, and the restaurant was not busy at all. Also, we saw a bag sitting on top of the stove which turned out to be our sandwiches and all they had to do was put fries in the bag. Just research the menu before ordering here. I didn't realize the 'bacon cheeseburger' was 2 patties by default. 1 patty is the 'little' sizes. I ordered little fry and regret not getting them cajun style. As has been covered, they give you toooons of fries in even the smallest order. Anyway, the bacon cheeseburger all the way + little fries, $14+. It's delicious, the burger has char at the edges that is almost impossible to find at fast food. Average burgers with a gourmet price. Atmosphere minimal with descent service. I didn't care for all the noise the employees were making ie: shouting out the orders when they were taken and when the orders were done, was expecting better. Food is great as usual. However, it is the smallest five guys location I have been to and does not have adequate space for waiting in line, for waiting for your food, or for seating. Bad planning considering it's the only one in Iowa. Everyone is stuck on top of each other. Sure it may slow down considerably after the initial hype, but even then it will be more than the small facility can comfortably handle. read more

We had family things to do so we stopped for a quick bite. My wife and I both got the bacon cheese burger and we ordered fries to share. I got the small coffee shake and my wife ordered a soft drink. The person behind the counter told me my total and it was $35. I was very surprised by this, seams like a lot for just a couple of burgers and fries. I paid and moved on to wait for my food. The food took a while but they were busy. There was no where to sit so we ate in the car. The burger was ok but not that great for what they want you to pay. The fries were fresh cut which is nice but they were soggy and not crispy at all. The one thing I did love was the coffee shake. It was made with actual coffee beans which is always nice. I don't think I would go back knowing that I could get better burgers at much cheaper prices just down the road (I'm talking like red robin not some cheap fast food). The burgers are not that bad but I really don't know what the hype is about. For $7 you get a double patty burger in a wrapper that does not look any more spectacular than a McDonalds burger, except that it cost $7. There are other local places that serve much better burgers for half the cost. I can get a combo meal at B-Bops for the same price and get a much better, less greasy tasting burger. read more

lol i just really don't like this place hahaha.... it's raved about but im just not a big fan of the limited menu thing.... i find it weird. And for having such a limited menu, you would think It would all be really good but the burger just didn't live up, and the fries honestly sucked. $80 for five of us to eat burgers and fries. Piles of stuff in the middle of the floor everywhere. Some girl yelling numbers out at the top of her lungs. There is seating for less then 50 and due to the number of people and free peanuts in the shell you can imagine what the floor looks like. The place was lined up to the door when we ate there. Nothing like people standing around you while you are trying to eat dinner. After waiting twenty minutes for our food we settled in to soggy fries with no taste and one of the best burgers I have had in a long. I've been trying to place a phone order for 20 minutes. I called they answered the phone said hold on a minute, I waited 12. Hung up called back 4 additional times where it was just not answered and went to a Verizon message. The music was so loud here, you couldn't hear the staff when ordering food. Somebody call OSHA, the staff needs ear protection. $28 for 2 regular bacon cheeseburgers, a regular fry, a large and a regular coke. Juicy burgers, good fries. If you're looking for fast food burger and don't want to eat at McDonalds then it's a great option! Good quality and for me personally it does fill me up! I always order little burger with little fries for almost 8+ which is not bad! I love the French fries, they are cooked in peanut oil! Place always packed since it's a fast food place and small! Don't recommend it for family who want to sit down and eat! Unless you want carryout and eat it at home. It don't suggest taking little kids! Since it's very busy. But kids might like their malt milkshakes!! And some people complaining about buns being soggy!! Well when you order tomatoes, and all these sauces with cheese! Of course it's going to be soggy!! The food here is so good! I love their burgers, I love their fries, everything is made fresh to order and tastes great for it. I get the little cheeseburger and that is more than plenty for me (it's a single hamburger patty instead of a double). The fries are always hot and warm and delicious. The only issue with this location is their online order process and workflow. Each time I've ordered online, I head into the restaurant and head to the pick up area. This is the same pick up area that everyone, whether they've ordered online or in the store, go to wait for their order. If you order online you just put your name on the order, everyone waiting in the store has a number. So whenever a number is called, all the people who ordered instore go to the counter and grab their order. Then the worker leaves the counter and goes back to their work station making the food. Each time I've had to wait at least 10 minutes before a worker acknowledges that I've been standing there for a while, they ask me what I'm waiting for and I tell them my order was online, because they have no way of identifying or separating the people who order online. It ends up taking the same amount of time to order online as it does to order in the store. A pretty inefficient and sometimes frustrating process. The food is great but I definitely won't be rushing to come back again. read more

Horrible! First time there and didn't even get to order that place looked dirty most of tables needed cleaning and don't serve peanuts if your not willing to clean up after people specially kids. Man...I'm super bummed to write this review. I feel like I'm a kid again and I just found out that Santa isn't real! Biggest letdown from a "restaurant" in the 21st Century! I've been waiting to try the hype for over three years and won't be back in at least 3 decades! $41 is what it cost me for two ppl (three burgers, two fries, and two shakes)...which I waited for roughly 15 minutes for (at 4pm). And there were 11 workers and 15 customers at the time. No drive thru to deal with either. I literally watched two ladies stand over their "ready to go buns" for 10 min and do nothing else. Big item of note: I walked in and the place is lined with bags of raw potatoes...great sign to me because they must take pride in their fries, right? Nope. The coldest, rawest, soggiest fries you could imagine. School lunch fries are better. The one silver lining was the burgers were right on point in every way except for the worst possible government cheese slapped on top. The plain burger I had, earned the one star I put up...everything else should earn a kick in the ding ding. So disappointed in this...wanted to love them. I have been a Five Guys fan for many years. I have been to stores in VA, CO, WI, IL and MN. I was initially very excited to have a store in Des Moines. Today was our third visit and third disappointment. The fries have been soggy everytime, and this time the portions were skimpy. Burgers were mediocre (soggy bun as others have mentioned), air inside felt infused with cooking oil and the team were loud and obnoxious. I get having a fun work environment, but stop short of annoying customers. Unfortunately as I know how good Five Guys can be, but this one is not like the others. Being from Chicago and living in Iowa has it's ups and downs. When it comes to the world of great burgers in Iowa there don't exist many ups. I was excited to hear that Five Guys Burgers and Fries was opening in West Des Moines, right near where I work. However, the night I chose to check out Five Guys.. I was taken back a bit. Not in a good way either. No sweet memories of making me think I had been transplanted back to the world of great grease joints in Chi-town... long line, the incessant LOUD noise in such a closed environment left me feeling claustrophobic in minutes. How anyone can sit and enjoy themselves is beyond me. I ordered the Bacon Cheeseburger with fries. The price of a burger shouldn't make your heart skip a beat, but here it will. And what I got was a replica of what Burger King can churn out in 1/3 the time at 1/4 of the cost. Tastewise I found nothing that made this burger joint unique to me. Even Chicago doesn't charge these types of prices and theirs actually taste amazing. Next time I need a burger fix Ill go to Burger King. Next time I wan't my mind blown by great prices with a tenacious burger Ill return to Smashburger... the only burger joint in or near West Des Moines that is incredible. Went to Five Guy's around 2pm today, the place was busy. There were four of us but the line wasn't to long, we placed our order and sat down about six minutes later they called our number,we got our food and each burger was numbered by who ordered first so there was no checking burgers to see who they belonged to. The burgers were hot and juicy the buns were not soggy like some reviews have claimed, you put a bun on a juicy burger, you get a moist bun. The fries were so hot that they burnt your mouth. Some reviews stated that the fries were soggy well they are fresh potatoes hand cut at the store,so their moisture content is higher than the precooked frozen potatoes that every other burger place uses. I would rather have a Five Guy's burger hot off the grill put on the bun and served promptly, than hot off the grill put in a warming pan and served whenever (Be-Bops) or cold fries that have been refried (McDonald's) in my opinion. read more

Pretty reasonable price for hamburger and I like well done double beef patties with plenty of French fires solve my meal problem. First I can trust them whether they are using real beef by looking over the kitchen and yes beefs are cooked in the kitchen not inside of the manufactured beef. Let me start this by saying I've been to and enjoyed other Five Guys locations in other states (IL, MO, NE, CO). For some reason the burgers here don't match up with other locations. First the buns are cold, stale and dry. The burger itself was smashed so thin it was dry, over cooked and had no flavor. You end up getting a burger that is mostly bread and toppings. The fries however were good. I was excited when I heard they were coming to town but I won't go back at this location. I would like to see their corporate make a visit and re-train employees. read more

Crazy busy with after Christmas shoppers, I was like 10th in line, and when I left there was 25 in line... the bun melted from the juices from the burger, so I literally ate the patties with my fingers. One of my last bites, I noticed that there was pink in the patties, not good, but didnt get sick, as I didnt want to spit out in a restaurant full of people... This place is pretty average for burgers, except the burgers are a bit more juicy than other places, but along with that comes a loss of flavor that could be added to it. The fries are amazing though. Would recommend for anyone who just wants something decent on the way home. If you want some of the best burgers, definitely check out cheese castle near the des moines airport. read more
