3.5 stars
"In summary, 5 Guys dazzles you with a tasty burger at a reasonable $5 price point... but as they are handing it to you with their right hand (classic misdirection), they reach around with the left and steal your money on the fries and soda."
5 Guys is a cool little burger joint. I will open by saying that in general I really enjoyed the food. You can tell that the ingredients are fresh and of high quality. When given a choice, I order my steak rare. 5 Guys does not offer temperature requests, in fact, cook all of their burgers well done. I had read about this 'well done' strategy on their website prior to my maiden voyage and was skeptical to say the least. But to give credit where credit is due, it was the most juicy/moist - well done burger I have ever had... Yes - it most certainly was cooked through. The cajun fries were also a nice option, they had a nice subtle kick, and the regular order was more than enough for one person (no need for the large).
So after the first paragraph, you may be saying, why the 3.5 stars? Well, you walk into the place and notice that the walls are plastered with various 'rave reviews' from critics hailing mostly from the East coast. Statements like "Voted Best Burger," "Best Deal,"This place can't be beat,"The best $5 burger a man can eat." Now, I can't fault them for what other people have said, but come'on 5 Guys, you decorated the place.
Have you ever gone on a date with a super cool guy/girl and then get to their house, only to find out they have a ton of pictures of themselves on the walls. It's kind of a turn-off, right?... Don't be so full of yourself, I'll be the judge - 5 Guys.
This brings me to my next point. $11.50 out the door for the Cheeseburger, regular fries, regular soda. I'm sorry, but this is too much. For the record, 'Cheeseburger' means double cheeseburger (two patties), and 'Small Cheeseburger' means cheeseburger (one patty). 5 Guys would be 5 stars at the $8 price point (which is where you will find the 'In & Out' burger, fries, and soda), but at $11.50 they are going to need to throw in some more bells and whistles for me to be a regular. Don't get me wrong, I like the condiment choices, cajun fry option, and even the peanuts... but not on a regular basis. Where they really screw you is on the fries and the soda - $2.79 & $2.09 respectively - that's almost $5 right there, so much for cheap.
Let me say that I don't understand how people don't understand the comparison to In & Out. In fact, I think In & Out is the perfect comparison to 5 Guys. To me In & Out is a cut above McDonald's, Carl's, BK... which I consider your typical burger-centric fast food.
In & Out sets itself apart from other fast food chains by using fresh ingredients and cooking to order. They have a very simple menu, a cult following and have blown up over the past 20 years. Replace the word In & Out with 5 Guys and all the previous statements remain true. On top of that, the atmosphere inside the restaurant is very similar, and the peanuts are about the only thing that sets the two apart - I guess I would throw the 'Habit' in there too.
These burger joints have their own identities, but they are in the same sub-category. Fact is, when you are in the same sub-category you are going to be compared, and 'In & Out' spanks 5 Guys on the price. Period.
In summary, 5 Guys dazzles you with a tasty burger at a reasonable $5 price point... but as they are handing it to you with their right hand (classic misdirection), they reach around with the left and steal your money on the fries and soda. I am sure I will be back, just not very soon... I need to save up =) read more
