When I was a kid, I used to spend a good portion of the summer at my grandparents' house in east Macon. In the cul-de-sac where they lived, was one of the neighborhood's many 'candy ladies', except with a couple of distinct differences. My grandparents' neighbor (let's call him, Mr. P) was not a lady, and - in addition to candy - he also sold home-cooked hamburgers. Unlike stuck-up little Eddie Murphy who shunned the 'houseburger', my playmates and I knew that Mickey D's didn't have nothing on Mr. P. Most times we'd already squandered our little-kid per diem on all kinds of junk, so we'd often have to just sit on the porch and fill ourselves with the smell of pan-fried beef emanating from the kitchen across the street. But occasionally, if a couple of us were able to scrape up a dollar around the time Mr. P started cooking - we felt like we'd won the lottery. Mr. P's burgers were the best of the basic: you could get cheese or no-cheese, and he served each one wrapped in wax paper and stuffed in a small paper bag with plain white napkins. Simple, satisfying, and cheap. Nowadays, the burger, like most simple classics, is being upgraded and grandiosed in some of the most ridiculous ways: foie gras, truffles, Wagyu beef and such, with prices ranging from $14 to over $100. Rubbish. For me, the KISS (a.k.a., Keep it simple, stupid) method still reigns supreme when it comes to a burger. And the one chain (at least here in the A) that seems to agree with me is Five Guys. Their menu is a prime example of their adherence to simplicity: you can get a hamburger, cheeseburger, bacon burger or bacon cheeseburger in either 'little' (quarter-pound) or regular size. The fries come in regular or large, with optional Cajun seasoning. The restaurant itself has the kitschy retro charm of The Varsity, without the unwanted gastrointestinal side effects. And the food is served almost exactly like Mr. P's. The hand-pressed burgers come wrapped in a piece of foil and the fresh cut fries are over-stuffed into a small Styrofoam cup. Both are tossed into a brown paper bag along with plain white napkins, which - as the tiny grease spots on the bag indicate - you'll definitely need. And if you must elevate your burger to elegant status, you can choose from as many additional toppings as you want, including some of my kitchen-burger favorites: fried onions, sautéed mushrooms, and A1 steak sauce. This was WAY better than my other Five Guys experience. However, I had forgotten in my several-month absence that a "cheeseburger" has 2 patties, which means it's HUGE. Small-ish people with normal appetites should get the "little hamburger" or "little cheeseburger", because "little" in this case means 1 patty, not actually little. But the burger (all the way, baby!) was delicious. I'm only slightly ashamed to admit that I ate the whole damn thing. We got 2 regular orders of cajun fries for 4 fry-loving people, and we STILL didn't eat them all. Consider yourselves warned. The fries are just ok, but you can't have a burger without fries. I would say they're a lot like the fries at the Varsity, but not as greasy - and if you order them cajun style, they are a little spicy. Service was friendly and fast, and the restaurant was clean. Oh, fair warning for anyone who doesn't know where this is - don't do like I did and skip looking up directions. "W. Village Place" is NOT in downtown Smyrna by the library. Ok, FYI, you can't come here expecting variety, unless when you think variety you mean the variety of toppings you can put on a burger. The do have that. The burgers are pretty good, the fries are also excellent. The peanuts are a nice thought but they are sub-par sadly. I long for Five Guys to upgrade their peanuts so that I can chomp on them while waiting for a juicy burger. Watch out for long waits sometimes. So far I seem to have managed to get in right before a big group, and I then feel sorry for them all standing around waiting to put in their orders and no place to drop peanut shells. One of best burgers in Atlanta. The beef is fresh, the potatoes are fresh, and the peanuts are fresh. If you have a peanut allergy, you should avoid this place. But I would avoid the peanuts anyway because my friend got a massive diarrhea attack after eating the peanuts (I don't normally eat the peanuts). Diarrhea attack or not, it didn't attack me so I'll still come here. My only complaint is the price. This place can set you back $10 if you get fries, burger, and a drink. For a fast food type setting, it's definitely not fast-food price. Also, when they first opened, they used to pack the bags with fries, now they only pack the cups with fries. Good Burgers. A little pricey. Very limited menu. Five Guys is good for grabbing a good quality burger and fries quickly. The menu at Five Guys is very limited: burgers, hotdogs, fries and drinks. I don't even think they have milk shakes. The limited menu bothers me a bit but maybe that's the secret to their success. The burgers are consistently fresh and tasty and topped just the way you request. The standard burger has a double patty. They offer lots of toppings including grilled onions, mushrooms, peppers and sauces. The fries are also tasty and fresh but are sometimes just a little soggy. The prices seem a bit steep: $9.50 for basically a fast food combo meal? Granted, it's better than any fast food joint but it's still just a burger and fries. 3 1/2 stars rounded up. read more

Let me start by saying that I'm a BIG five guys fan, I could easily eat it once a week! I'm also a big fan of this location. It USED to be awesome and I never had a problem here until just recently. Lately, I've been using their online ordering tool to order burgers. It's really convenient and quick...usually. One day, about three weeks ago, I made an order and went to pick it up (well after the 20min wait time they tell you) but when I arrived my order wasn't even half ready. Now, I forgave them this because I'm pretty sure I had the very first order of the day so maybe they were just a lil slower since they were just opening up shop. HOWEVER, what DID bother me was that even though they'd just opened, the place didn't look very clean. I snapped a few shots of a dirty, unmopped floor and some unwiped counters. Now I can understand this level of untidyness in the middle of a busy day but not when they're just opening up. Now fast forward to today. My wife and I ordered online again and this time I was pleased by how fast our order was ready. GREAT! However, when we got home and unpacked our sandwiches, we realized that they were smaller than usual. Once we opened them up we saw why...they gave us both one patty our on burgers when we paid for two. Also, I ordered grilled green peppers and there were none on my burger. Now, I know we don't pay for toppings at Five Guys, but still I'd like to have what I ordered and we definitely paid for our second patty. I don't know if management has changed or they just a new batch of employees but I'm no longer a happy customer. read more

Yes, their burgers are delicious. A bit over priced for fast food, as a bacon cheeseburger is $7.50 and regular size fries are $3.40. Regular drink is $2.30. $13.20 per person plus tax if you get all 3. Makes sense that they charge these prices because they are extremely slow and can't possibly serve that many guests during the peak hours, so they'll make up for throughput with higher prices. Customer service is typical for fast food. Unenthusiastic, laid back, tired looking. But I go there to get my delicious bacon cheeseburger and Cajun fries. They aren't very busy so I can usually order without waiting in line during dinner hours. Solid 3 star joint all things considered! read more

Rude employees, horrible food. Will not be going back to this location. Ordered online and went to check out counter to pick up order. They were standing around looking at me and finishing up work. Not one person acknowledged me until another couple came up to the register where orders are taken. Finally, the guy says oh we didn't know what you wanted. Still waiting on food when young lady working ask what ticket number are you, is this your food. As I tell her I don't know if it's mine, she gives me this irritated look and ask about me not knowing my ticket number. I explain that I have an online order and THEN she looks at the ticket attached to the bag and gives me the food. I get home, already annoyed, and the food is nasty. The burger has no taste. The fries are overly salted. It just felt slopped together. Never again. read more

They don't have a huge menu, but it doesn't matter since it's perhaps the best burger in the category of moderately fast and inexpensive. You choose all of your toppings, and the only cheese choice is American, but it works. We ordered both the plain and Cajun fries. The fries portion is huge, so two can probably share one order. The Cajun fries are very good, but they are heavily seasoned, so if you aren't a huge fan of Cajun spices, stick to the plain. The inside decor is not much to look at, however it's comfy enough for what it is. This location seemed clean, and the staff was pretty good. It's not a healthy option, but if you don't care and/or you feel like a calorie splurge, I highly recommend Five Guys. read more

I've been to several locations of Five Guys Burgers and Fries. This particular location stands out above all the rest. It is much cleaner than some of the others, the food tastier - (mmm? was that because it's more comfortable to dine in a clean environment? A big yes from me!), & very pleasant counter service. Outdoor dining! This location has a small patio for outdoor dining - a nice feature. Besides the fact that outdoors is great on a pleasant day, you can escape the music. Sometimes I'm not in the mood for loud music, sometimes I am. If you are new to Five Guys, it's a place where you order food at the counter, & the beverage, then sit & your burgers are brought out to you. The choices of add-ons to your burger is quite wide, so don't be afraid to ask about something if you are unsure. Usually the service is pretty quick. Five Guys Burgers are a little more expensive than the fast-food joints, but definitely taste better, & the fresh cut fries are great. Only bummer, no milkshakes. When this location appeared close to my work, my heart skipped a beat. Could it be? An awesome burger within the lunch hour distance of my office? Say it isn't so! If you've never experienced a Five Guys burger, you're missing out. They're juicy, they're greasy, they're meaty, they're absolutely delicious. It's the next best thing to In-N-Out for the South, only instead of throwing out secret code like "animal style" you have all the options laid out before you on the menu board. If it's normal burger fare, it's up for grabs. Everything is made fresh to order, and the lettuce is always crisp and happy to see me - no girl likes wilted anything... A "small" fry here is the size of the venti cup at the 'Bucks. No really. I'm not lying. Not only do they fill the cup well beyond capacity with fries - also greasy and delicious - but the BAG will be given a love tap of an extra dose of frenchy goodness. The large fry might as well be advertised as a bathtub full of tubers because it's enough to feed Octomom and all her kids in one cup. The best part about Five Guys may be all the greasy deliciousness, but the prices certainly serve me well too. An affordable, tasty burger and fries in the city? Perfection. The burgers here are just okay. It makes a difference if you get it to go or eat it there because it will get SOGGY fast! The longer you wait, the soggier the bun will become and I ate my burger in the restaurant recently and it was still soggy. Nonetheless, it was still fairly tasty. They should have the option for a toasted bun so it can hold up to all that grease and those toppings. The fries are just plain ole fries that happen to be cut fresh and seasoned, but it really doesn't make them stand out. There is no indication on the menu that the regular cheeseburger actually comes with two patties instead of one and the little cheeseburger is the normal people sized burger with one patty. I don't think they have a kid friendly burger. I've also had a hot dog from here....that bun was soggy too. This place is not even close to In-N-Out in my opinion. Yet another in a series of "away from Atlanta after eight years in California" stops...and yet again, I was not disappointed! The first thing I thought when I entered and saw the very minimal menu was "In 'n' Out." If you've lived in or have even visited California, you know about In 'n' Out: Basically, it's like Five Guys...just a serious focus on a damn good burger and fries made with fresh ingredients. And as much as I love ya In 'n' Out (especially the Mill Valley location off the 101) with your secret menu and weird religious stuff on the cups, Five Guys was way better. I like that Five Guys is like fast casual burgers. I've always had a solid burger from here and a good experience at this location. I particularly like that they have meatless and low carb options. Ya know, I LOVE Five Guys, but this one just wasn't up to par. First, they forgot to put the toppings on my bacon cheese dog. Second, they forgot to put the bacon on my boyfriend's bacon cheese burger. Third, they gave us a small fries instead of the large fries (they are good, don't judge me) Finally, no "Welcome to Five Guys" as we walked in the door. What the heck, yo? I'd give them another chance, perhaps it was just an off day, but I wouldn't make this my favorite Five Guys based on this experience. After craving a burger all weekend I finally made a trip to Five Guys and had all my cravings fulfilled. I think this may be the happiest I have ever been leaving a restaurant. No joke. I wanted this damn burger so bad, and Five Guys made it perfectly. I went with the little bacon cheese burger and loaded on the toppings. Not sure what all the fuss is about this place - they have decent burgers and hot dogs, and the fries are good but no better than myriad other local places like US Cafe (whose burgers are better). That said, I'm happy to eat there when I'm craving a burger. This is a delicious heart attack...very fresh burgers and great fries. I get a craving for a good burger every once in a while and Five Guys hits the spot. I moved to Atlanta from Virginia and got to enjoy the original 5 Guys. My only gripe with many of the Georgia locations is they don't have the same atmosphere since the employees pickup all the peanut shells instead of leaving them there. read more

The burger is tasty and you get a double patty. They are generous on the fries but I found them to be slightly soggy and lacked "crisp". I also enjoyed the choice of toppings on the burger. Don't get me wrong it's a decent solid burger. (Not the best burger I've ever had but a SOLID burger). Think 7.2 Dave Portnoy scale... what five guys lacks in is VALUE, over $14 for a regular cheeseburger and fries with NO drink I find insane. What I found even funnier were several signs inside the store claiming that it was a "bargain" and "inexpensive". I have no problem shelling out $8-10 bucks for a good burger and fries but $14 bucks at a fast casual chain I don't find reasonable. read more

First and foremost, if you enjoy a big hunky hamburger and don't care about the calories....then you must stop in and try. The meat is totally fresh and the star....as it should be. I love mushrooms on my cheeseburger and they offer them! No extra charges for toppings which is great! Then there are the French fries! Just a hint, if you are dining with another person only place one French fry order. It's enough for two hungry folks, trust me! I love the peanuts while you wait. Since everything is cooked to order, you will have to wait a little longer than any fast food joint but the peanuts keep you happy and busy. It has always been clean and pleasant service. Understaffed and slow. After my favorite local burger place did a 180 and...well, you know how some places just look like dives but the food and service is awesome? Yeah. They started living up to their decor. Or down to it. Anyway, Five Guys makes decent burgers. This cannot be denied. So I was happy they were in my neighborhood. However, once I was told here that it was a 30 minute wait for food. Considering the amount of people standing around waiting for food (four), how is that 30 minutes? Are the burgers monogrammed? Do you have an abbatoir in back and the rest of the staff is busy killing livestock for the burgers and THAT's why there's only two of you--one to man the register (i.e. warn people away from the wait time) and one to actually do the food prep? This is way too much money to pay for such slow food service. A couple dollars more and I can go get a similarly decent burger at a sit down place. I wish we had an awesome burger dive in the Smyrna area...I'll take a decor of inexplicable license plates and random postcards over wall to wall declarations of how Five Guys is GOD'S FAVORITE BURGER any day of the week. The burgers are great. You will definitely leave full from the place. The cool thing is that you get to select a regular hamburger or cheeseburger and the toppings are optional with no extra charge i.e. sauteed mushrooms, grilled onions, etc. While your food is being prepared you can snack on complimentary peanuts. This place blows away in n out burger because its not as greasy and everything is fresh. I definitely recommend the Cajun fries with your meal. This was a real treat. We got two amazing burgers for a great price. The meat was perfect, very fresh. The fries, like many other reviewers have claimed, were really really good. Maybe some of the best fries I've had. Me and my date ate for less than $20. If you like burgers then this is for sure the place for you, and this is my new spot for burgers.
