I have not been the biggest fan of Five Guys. I know there are people out there that will rave about it and say that it is a satisfying meal. Those same people will say that it is fast food, but to me it is just messy food. I know that they basically cook to order, but I feel as if they are heavy handed with the food. Plus I am not a huge fan at how some of the food is prepared, but if we go down that road this is going to be one of the longest review out there. I'll simplify it, deep frying the bacon when there is a gridle just baffles me. While at work my coworker and I decided that for lunch we were going to order in. I let him pick and he chose here. I didn't argue, I just looked over the menu. I went with a bacon cheeseburger and a side of fries. Doesn't matter if you go with a small, it is still overflowing in the bag. Fries are you fresh cut variety, but I swear they use some of the smallest potatoes as they are not very long fries. Pair that with some ketchup and you are good to go. For my bacon cheeseburger I decided to top it with lettuce, onion, pickle, mayo and mustard. When I said they are heavy handed with these burgers, I swear that they slam these burgers around. Stacking the burger and toppings isn't that hard of a job, but when you finally open the foil around the burger it looks like they have done a pushup on top of the burger. That or after they wrap it in the foil it is they fold it so tightly that it is pressed. Needless to say, this is not the prettiest looking or appetizing looking thing. All that aside, it didn't taste bad, but it obviously wasn't the best burger in the world either. Even the fries were a bit of a letdown. Came here for dinner on a Monday evening. I ordered the bacon cheeseburger and large cajun fries. Total came out to around $16. What's Hot - Free peanuts. Helpful and awesome! I was able to munch on peanuts while I was waiting for my friend, which was helpful. There is a metal scoop so that you can scoop out the peanuts (which are unshelled) without using your bare hands. They also provide small container for you to hold the peanuts. You could also take these peanuts with you if you don't finish them, which is convenient. - Portions. What I love love love about the fries is that they will scoop extra fries into your bag, which flows over the cup that holds your fries. I ended up having leftover fries for the next day. My bacon cheeseburger came with 2 meat patties, in addition to all the toppings I added on my burger- mushrooms, sautéed mushrooms, ketchup, and pickles. Their burger toppings come at no additional cost, too, which is helpful. - Quality. My cajun fries were definitely spicy and had a kick, which was yum! - Layout. It's a pretty decent layout. There are several tables and high stools by the window counter. - Service. Their staff are nice and helpful. I asked a couple of questions cuz it's been a while since I was last at a Five Guys. I also asked for an extra bag before I left so that I could hold my leftovers in a non-greasy bag. They answered my questions, were helpful, and gave me what I needed. - Location. It's in Oakland, which is convenient. However, because it's so close to University of Pitt, be prepared that this place can get busy with students. What's Not - Prices. Close to $20 for one meal and no drinks is pretty high. To be fair, their portions are pretty good. Just be prepared that a meal can cost you. That your burger toppings are free and that there are free peanuts may compensate for the higher cost of the individual items. - Location. The equalizer for the convenient location is that it can get busy. Additionally, this is not a place you drive to. Parking in this neighborhood is inconvenient. Walk or take the bus. - Cleanliness. Given that customers are shelling their peanuts and eating all their food out of the brown paper bags (which the food come in), it's easy for the tables and floors to get dirty. I didn't see any of their staff sweep the floor. I saw one of their staff come out and wipe a couple of tables once or twice. However, they don't appear adequately staffed to handle the restaurant at full capacity. Be prepared for there to be food droppings and whatnot on their tables. - Quality. Their burger was good, but not very flavorful. The taste seemed neutral and not seasoned. It's not bad, but I've had better. I like their cajun fries better than their burger. Put it this way, I wouldn't come here just for the burger. Final Answer Willing to come back, but I don't think their burger is their main attraction. read more

The burgers were not as I expected or taste the same as the other 5 Guys that I have been to. My first time at a Five Guys last Saturday for National Hamburger Day. I came here on a friends recommendation after seeing that BRGR's line was out the door. I had the cheeseburger with sauteed mushrooms and sauteed onions. They went really light on the topping only under the bottom of the two toppings to the point I could barely taste them. I find it only marginally better than a McDonald's quarter pounder with cheese, as another reviewer commented. That much said In-n-Out doesn't do much for me either, so I can see how some might disagree. I much prefer burgers where they grind their own beef and you can get something besides super well-done... Listen, I am a fan of Five Guys and I have dined here a few times before as I was a Pitt student. I don't have high expectations for fast food, and I rarely review fast food places. I had an event to go to in the evening and didn't have time to go home and make dinner in between so I decided I would grab fast food. I haven't had Five Guys in a while so I went with it. I ordered online, as I needed the food by a certain time and figured it would be best to order ahead of time online to eliminate wasting time waiting at the restaurant, or taking time to call to place my order beforehand. I placed my order around 4:15 pm and requested for the food to be ready at 4:45 pm. I figured that this was plenty of time. I parked my car nearby (without paying for parking, since I assumed I would be in and out quickly), and at promptly 4:45 pm I walked into the restaurant and told the cashier that I was there to pick up my order. They then alerted the kitchen staff, who started to prepare my order. Ok... I appreciate that the food will be fresh, but why have the option online to add a time when it's not going to be ready anyway? The restaurant was busy and I ended up waiting 20 minutes for my food. I was relieved that I didn't get a parking ticket during that time. I was a bit frustrated when I got back into my car, as I was now running late to my event due to the unexpected wait time for food. As one does with ALL fast food bags when ordering fries.. I went into the bag to reach for a french fry. Only to be saddened by the fact that ALL OF THE FRIES were COVERED in ENTIRELY TOO MUCH SALT. I saw this place written up in Consumer Reports about being a great burger chain and I saw it while in Pittsburgh so I decided to give it a try. I must say that I don't get the hype. The burger comes with grilled onions, ketchup, mustard, pickles, mayo, and I think something else. The thing is, you can't order it the way you want it. I tried to remove onions and mayo from the order and the cashier told me it was all or nothing. We "negotiated" a bit and I was finally get her to remove the mayo. Or so I thought. The burger I got had everything, including the mayo that I did not want, and was missing the ketchup that I did want. The burger was ok but nothing special. It lacked salt and pepper. The fries were horrible with a capital H. I don't care if they are "fresh" from Idaho (they have sacks sitting on the floor to show how fresh they are; kinda weird if you ask me). The fries were limp and greasy!!! I could not finish them. I ate a few and threw the rest away. A complete waste of $2.49 for a small. And my stomach was immediately queasy after eating. This place was popular, however, and I had to wait a while for my burger to be cooked. It is beyond me why. It is right up the street from the O. They offer burgers, hot dogs and fries. You can see fresh ingredients on the picture I attached. So tasty and Sooo Huge. They provided diverse topping options but I simply chose "everything ". Its potato was totally different from others in a great way. Although its amount was really big, I didn't make any leftovers. Rich flavor and crispy texture stimulated my appetite. We've spent going on five months in Pittsburgh will my critically ill mother~in~law, so trying out all of the restaurants in the vicinity helped keep our sanity. This is my favorite place of them all. I don't eat a lot of bread, so imagine how thrilled I was to find the option of having my burger wrapped in lettuce! I generally eat there once a week. The fries are delicious and they even let you know where the potatoes for the day's fries were grown. There are boxes of peanuts in the shell for customers to shell and eat while you wait for your burger and fries to be cooked. It's one place I happily recommend. Conveniently located, reasonably priced, and consistently good food-- this is a great location to get burgers, shakes and fries. Customary to Five Guys locations, you have a great deal of flexibility in customizing your burgers here-- just make sure you keep an eye on the menu before you order. (The regular hamburger comes with two patties!) Ingredients taste fresh, and every burger is made to order, so it's warm and nothing is soggy. The buns are probably the least impressive part of the burger, and it often arrives to pickup a bit squished. Fries are tasty, served in a cup. These are also made to order, and most of the time seem to take a little longer than the burgers themselves. There's always a cute sign telling you where the potatoes came from as well. Sometimes the fries come a bit unevenly cooked-- some are crispy and hard, others slightly soggy-- but they are always fully cooked and one order of fries is more than enough to share. (Beware that the fries are drenched in oil which often seeps through your to-go bag!) I am a fan of the milkshakes, which are large and offered with lots of whipped cream. The milkshakes come in a variety of flavors, and each one is dense enough to keep you full, even without a burger. This location caters to students, which means that it can be a tight squeeze during peak hours. The first time I walked past this restaurant I thought, "Oh, they have an In N Out here?!?" If you are going to create an In N Out knock off, why would you use the same red and white colors? Healthy and tasty food! For fast food, Five Guys seems on the healthier side which I like! I definitely didn't feel the grease overwhelm me as I do feel with some types of fast food sometimes. I got the Little Hamburger, which was just right for me in terms of portions. I'd agree with the comments that say that Five Guys has one of the best fast food burgers in existence ... except for the fact that one of the burgers I bought recently had an actual piece of bone in it. I bit down on this, badly cracking a tooth in the process. Two months and multiple dental procedures later, I'm feeling much better, but this wasn't the way I wanted to spend my Christmas season. So, being from California, I have to compare this to in-n-out. It's right about the same. I got 2 cheese burgers with diff toppings, mushrooms, onions, and peppers. They were fantastic. They have an 'everything' style that seems just, over the top. If I saw one while driving down the freeway and I was hungry, I'd pull over. But, if there was an in-n-out or white castle (haven't tried) I'd go to one of those. Absolutely the worst. The food is pretty good and that's why people will put up with the abuse that is their customer service or complete and total lack thereof. I placed an order online went to the restaurant the guy at the front of the counter called out my name said I was there but apparently they lost my order because they were so busy I waited for an hour patiently trying to be nice at which point I went up and started to ask what was up with my order and why it was taking so long when people behind me we're getting all of their orders and all I got was attitude. I definitely prefer In&Out to Five Guys as far as taste in their burgers, however Five Guys fries are so much better than In & Out's shrimpy little ones. I guess it's just a matter of east vs. west coast and where you are. I do find Five Guys more filling than In&Out as well, but I think their meat is less flavorful at Five Guys... Burger quest continues.... I had heard a lot of good things about Five Guys. Hearing good things about a fast food joint is always surprising. The final verdict. Perhaps a slight notch up from McD's or Burger King. The fries were actually very good. I love crispy fries that haven't been sitting there for hours (or days??) and they were high on the crispy o' meter. Plus the single helping was ginormous! Enough for two people fo' sho'! On the burger side, meh. I ordered what I thought was a regular cheeseburger. Thankfully the chick at the register told me their "regular" is actually a double patty. Um, this truly is an influence of American culture super sizing. Ok, I'm getting off my box now...I opted for the single patty, which was the little hamburger. Little - normal portion. Keep that in mind when ordering! The burger itself was ok. Definitely not life changing. And believe me, I've had myself a life changing burger in the burgh! Cough, cough....Wingharts...cough, cough. Five Guys....YUM. I like this chain. Originally from Washington D.C. they put all kinds of stuff on your burger for you and they give you a ridiculous amount of fresh cut fries. I'm sure you have been here so you either like it or you don't. This review is about this location in Oakland and I have to say that I was impressed. The employees were very nice and they came out to the table and offered to take trash and get refills. I have been to several Five Guys and they have never offered to do so. To call Five Guys the east coast version of In-N-Out does a great disservice to them and their burgers. Yes they both hand cut their fries in the store, but where In-N-Out uses vegetable oil Five Guys uses peanut oil and offers Yummy Cajun Fries. Their burgers are also freshly made in the store. The best part though is that there is no stupid secret menu that you need to memorize in order to get the burger exactly how you want it. After my Vascetomy, I was all like, yeah fuck bed rest. These pain killers have me hungry as fuck so after I was dropped off at home, no less than three hours later I drove my neutered ass to five guys. The cheeseburgers are good, the milkshakes are good, the fries are good and they allow you to have free peanuts which is if you don't have a peanut allergy...good. I've been here like three times and never leave all pissed off and stuff. I'm not much of a hamburger person so I ordered a cheese dog with mushroom and A1 sauce and though I was a little skeptic of my own simple combination, the ingredients were really good individually and together! I ordered a "little" size of fries and they gave me more than the cup size (I had like 3/4 extra fries in my bag that couldn't fit into the cup but I'm not complaining!). And the free peanuts and refillable drinks are nice so it kinda makes up for the high price a bit (just a bit...) I'm not sure if a cook was having an off day, but I've manage to muster a few complaints: the burger was well done ; the fries were not crispy (not to mention that the portion was not as large as my previous visit); lastly, I ordered grilled onions and about a quarter of them were raw.
