$75 of ruined food served!: They used to be good, now I get my burgers at Red Robin (they have the best burgers in town, even better than the steakhouses). The past several times I have gotten food at Five Guys, my burger patties were smashed flatter than pancakes, they were bland, the toppings were not good as they were wilted small pieces of lettuce, and the condiments were almost non-existent. The wait was ridiculous because the workers were not doing their jobs as much as they were goofing off laughing or complaining. They half-listened to orders and kept asking for them repeatedly because they were too busy goofing off with people behind them while they were taking them so it kept getting rung up wrong. When the order came, the food had been thrown into the bag spilling the badly loosely wrapped burgers. The whole ordered but one burger was ruined! The fries were overly cooked and gross. The salt was not there at all. It tasted like burnt cardboard. They were all over the bag on top of the spilled burger pieces and they had just gotten tossed in there after being in the fryer so the grease in them dripped all over and soaked into the burgers. It not the only experience like that. Unfortunately, we have had several. At times, some of the staff wraked of pot too. This was a real problem for me because I have a severe allergy to that. I had to lay laid out for a whole day after due to the exposure while waiting for our food. It was horrible. The bag and food smelled like it too! We couldn't eat it. The staff appeared friendly but I was missing the "but so worth it" type comments when I expressed shell shock for $21.xx for a burger and fries, I got a smile and silence!! First off, I had to clean my own table as they were all dirty. They were not busy. Only one other person waiting and one family seated at a table. The burger was hot and the toppings were fresh. But... big but... for some reason I expected a bit of bite to the meat. Some char, some crunch at least some texture. It was as if the burger was steamed instead of fried on a griddle. The fries were not crisp and not spanking hot. The fries had a lot of really green fries in the batch. There were plenty of fries but as most of us know, green potatoes should not be eaten no matter how they are cooked so I didn't get to enjoy the over abundance of fries in the bag. It was my first visit for sure but also pretty sure it will be my last. To be fair I asked for the manager right before I left to show her the post. Emily said that they could have fixed any of that for me if I had asked. This was the most friendly experience I've ever had at five guys. The person who took my order for the entire family was super involved and cared extremely for us so we get the perfect order. Everybody was happy and friendly. Again, this is the best five guys you have to take a stop and have a burger there.. I honestly don't know what the hype is. Everyone talks about how great the hamburgers and fries are here. I found the fries to be well below average. They were way over seasoned, to the point that it was difficult to eat more than a couple in a row. Additionally, they were limp and soggy. I had a hamburger the one visit and a hotdog the other visit. Both were overpriced for the amount of meat and toppings you got. I felt the hotdog was twice the price that it should have been. She had the little bacon cheeseburger and little regular fries. I had the regular bacon cheeseburger and cajun fries. Typical burger nothing special. Good size patties. I'm surprised to see how many reviews talk about their first visit to Five Guys. It feels to me like everyone has been there. Well, I all into the 'first visit' category. I don't know what I imagined but the place itself was way different than what I thought it would be - not in a bad way, probably in a good way. The manager explained the options to us and the sizes of everything. Overall, I felt the burger was good and the fries were really good. You don't ever need to get a bigger size than small for fries. We had way too many. As many pointed out, the price really factors in here. For a QSR, I would expect the price point to be lower. As much as I enjoyed the food here, I don't know if I could justify coming here very often, as a result. read more

The burgers here are made fresh right in front of your face along with the fries. I was craving a burger while I was pregnant so we decided to stop and get a to go order. It's a bit pricy here but they definitely make it up with the fries. Usually they give you a cup of fries but they really give you a cup and over load it with fries in the bag. That's great! With the exception that it's extremely salty! Maybe next time I'll tell them no salt. Order can take awhile especially if they're busy but the staff is friendly. read more

When a family of 4 spends $40 for burgers and drinks there is a problem unless the food is off the charts. This falls far short of that. Yes the burgers are huge, but lacking i seasoning, and the fries are good but nothing to write home about. That ambiance is likes "Mel's Diner" only closer. One where you can taste the meat and don't need a whole lot of fixins to make it taste good. I have the same philosophy about steak. Enter Five Guys. I had my first Five Guys burger in Virginia a couple years ago and really enjoyed it. I thought, "If Five Guys ever came to California, it just might give In n Out a run for their money." After reading numerous articles about the phenomenon known as "5 Guys Burgers and Fries,", I was very excited to see a sign on Rt. 159 in Fairview Heights announcing the opening of a new 5GB&F location coming soon. They opened on Monday and we stopped by on Saturday. The line was to the door and almost every table in the "beer garden style dining room" was full. We didn't waste time on the free peanuts as I wanted to save room for the real food. We ordered and waited about 10 minutes, not fast food time but not a bad wait. BTW, the tables are way too close considering we are now one of the fattest nations on earth and this place was packed. We literally squeezed into an open space against a wall. Food came and I immediately learned something I had heard - the portions are HUGE. If that is your main criteria for a good restaurant, read no further. Otherwise, I'll continue. The burger - decent, but overpriced and fairly bland. No seasoning on the properly cooked meat, but an ample supply of toppings (I ordered it with everything). I had to seperate the two 1/4 lb. patties to be able to get it into my mouth. Taste? Reminded me of something you would cook at home in a skillet. No big deal. It is just a hamburger - nothing special. The fries - for all the hype and the stacks of potatoe boxes forming a walkway to the counter, they were a huge disappointment. Some overcooked, some overdone, limp, and greasy. I'm not a ketchup guy but I went for it after sampling them "naked." A small order was more than two of us could (or wanted) to eat. My family of four ate for about $40: two small burgers, two reg size burgers, one order of fries, and four soft drinks. Not a bad value. The burgers are cooked medium-well. I do not know if they honor requests for those of us who prefer their burgers rarer. The burgers are quality, but the toppings are the main attraction at this place. They have over a dozen to choose from, and they don't charge extra for any of them. The fries are very good, and you get a lot of them. Seriously. The four of us shared a regular size, and it was ample. For anyone looking for a peaceful and relaxing dining experience, get your food to go. It's a no-frills establishment, but they have a relaxed and friendly demeanor. I was skeptical at best when I heard about Five Guys. I had heard they were like my personal favorite In n Out Burger but I was not going to buy into the hype without trying it myself. When i saw one was coming near where I work I was excited and for months I waited with patience for them to open. Finally they were open for business and I had to stop in. I arrived at the height of the lunch hour and was a surprised at the line I was greeted with when I walked in the door. I was equally surprised at how fast I moved to the front of the line and got my order. I want to say that within 15 minutes of walking in the door I was sitting down with a brown bag of hot, greasy goodness. I had ordered the cheeseburger, which is actually a double cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato, and pickles with a regular order of fries and a large drink. The burger was one of the best fast food burgers I've ever had. The fries are absolutely to die for in my opinion. I wish that more places served fries like this, perhaps if they did I wouldn't gush so much much about them. I consider myself to have a healthy appetite and I was completely full when I finished my burger and fries. I had contemplated getting the large order of fries and I'm glad I didn't as the regular order was almost more than I needed. The one downside to them is the price. My lunch set me back $11, and that was just for me, not for 2 people so as much as I like these guys I don't see myself eating there on a regular basis, which is probably good for my heart and waistline.
