I'll start off by saying I'm not a huge fan of fast-food style hamburgers. However in that catagory I've always considered In n Out to be one of the best. So when 5 Guys came rushing into the Bay Area recently with much fanfare I figured I'd give it a try. I've been hearing about it for years on various food programs and they have a die-hard fan following. Reading a few online reviews and their own website I saw that while the hamburgers were highly touted, the fries were the stars of the show. So I cruised into the new Dublin restaurant during lunch time. The first thing that struck me was how similiar everything seemed to be to In n Out. Small menu, busy staff in a small space...even the color scheme seemed to be the same. I ordered a small hamburger with everything and a regular fry (these two items combined were over 1000 calories!). Everything is made to order and just like In n Out the fries are fresh cut although a bit thicker. The burger tasted alright...it was smothered with so much condiments that it was hard to taste the meat however it was fine. The fries on the other hand were a major disappointment. If I'm going to eat something fried I want it to be flavorful AND have that crispy, salty goodness. Neither of those was present. In fact they were soggy, bordering on being undercooked in the middle. Looking around at other diners tables it appeared that they were all the same. Terrible. In fact because of this and how high they come rated it was a huge letdown...I finished maybe a third of them just to make sure. I can't recommend going to this place at all. Plus the fact that my total was nearly $10. For $12 you can go down the road to Danville at Sideboard Cafe and get an amazing Prather Ranch hamburger with amazing crispy fries that may be near the best around. ARE YOU EFFING KIDDING ME! Five guys and In n Out shouldn't even be in the same sentence! After all the hype, I decided to try it out. I ordered a grilled cheese, fries and a drink. I thought $9 was a bit steep for a chain burger and fries, but whatevev. I get my order in a disgusting greasy paper bag. I take out the supposed "grilled cheese" and the bun was toasted, yet soggy. In between the bread, I found 2 COLD SLICES OF CHEESE. I ORDERED A FILLPIN' GRILLED CHEESE SANDWICH! I took it back up to the counter to show them the error. The manger brushed it off and said that's just the way they cook it! SERIOUSLY, she said that. I asked for another one with melted cheese, and got pretty much the same thing... On top of the that, the fries were thick and soggy- absolutely inedible. I will never ever ever come here again. America, you should be ashamed with yourself for raving about this place. read more

The family was heading over the see the new dogs at the shelter and I suggested we try out 5 guys for lunch. My wife loves hamburgers. She would rather eat a burger than Prime Rib or a great steak. I actually did the insulation on the duct system. We had heard good things so our expectations were high. Unfortunately, I was underwhelmed. The burger is a 1/3 patty. Bigger than an IN N OUT and good flavor. Besides the basic toppings, you can choose several extras at no charge. I went for the double burger (two patties) with bacon, bbq sauce, grilled onions, and green bell peppers. At $6.50 I thought it was a little expensive. My wife enjoyed her burger and the kids were like "it's ok". 4 people getting 2 doubles, 2 singles, 2 large fries, and 4 drinks was over $40. Again, seemed a little high for a fast food burger. I did like the Cajun fries, but everyone else thought they were over seasoned. Would I go out of my way to come here? No. But if we were seeing a movie or something, maybe. Really like their burger and the server give us a pretty large size fries. Much larger than other places!

First of all, the joint looks like it was run by a bunch of high school kids. It's disgusting inside, trash and food particles every where. Inn n Out is much cleaner. I went here because friends had told me how delicious it was. The prices were high for such poor quality. My burger was smashed and my fries were cold and mushy. The burger didn't have any kind of flavor, it was really bland. The whole "peanut" thing, not appealing. I won't ever waste my money here again. Inn n Out reigns supreme. read more

Heard good things about 5 guys and practically every inch of their wall and window space is full of reviews and awards. Sadly this restaurant does not live up to its own hype. Patty was dry and bland, the bun soggy and limp, and somehow my ordered mushrooms was heard as onions. The fries were not bad. My diet starts tomorrow, this was a wasted last binge. Definitely a winner over In N Out! Yes, they don't have animal fries but you can have any burger you want! They let you choose what you want on your burger and the fries are amazing! Say good bye to those skinny fries of In N Out and hello to better fries! Plus it comes with a great seasoning so can't beat that. This location was not too good! Ive always had wonderful service and delicious food at other Five Guys locations but surprisingly my experience here was distasteful. I was overcharged accidentally and the cashier said its "pretty much the same" like he payed for the meal! He didnt know how to give me the money i was overcharged for. Fine. The burger was sad!!! The cashier and service in general was very friendly. The food came out considerably fast for how many people were there. A very good burger, I like that you can put as many toppings on it you want for free. Tasted like a burger you could make on your outdoor grill. The price was okay. (Will post a receipt later.) The regular burger size is large with two patties. The fries on the other hand were, meh. They were lukewarm and soggy. I was scared to ask for a replacement because the whole place was jam packed. Wow! Talk about an awesome place to eat. Took the girlfriend here a couple weeks ago. It's about fifteen minutes across the hill for me, but wow. I've only heard about this place in passing and have been meaning to try it out, and it was definitely worth it. They've got a couple of burger selections in both 'regular' and 'junior' sizes. You tell them what you want in your burger (it's a pretty nice list of options) and they put it in -- all included in the price of your burger. We got the fries and I initially opted for a large based on seeing what their container sizes were, but the cashier convinced me that a small was more than enough for the two of us. Five Guys literally gives you one 'cup' of fries, puts it in a paper bag, and then gives you two additional large scoops for a 'small'. Definitely get the Cajun Fries, their extra kick of spice is definitely worth remembering. Love it! read more

I had a chance to return to Five Guys after trying an assortment of other "better burger" places, and Five Guys sits square in the middle. The nearby Habit is far tastier and has more variety (plus much better fries) and Smashburger is wonderful if not a little overpriced. Five Guys' burgers remain good, but the fries are still "meh" and I still don't get the hype. I guess I'm just too inclined to the char-grilled taste of The Habit's burgers. read more

Heard rave reviews from folks all over US about this chain so went to check it out. What they don't tell you is little burgers have 1 patty and regulars have 2. All toppings are customizable which is nice. Food made fresh and staff was efficient. But found burger patty bland, buns disintegrated while eating and toppings fall out. It was good but we prefer In & Out and Fudruckers better. Five Guys cost us double for a family of 4 and restaurant is very loud with tables on top of each other. Place your order online before you go to avoid the long lines. read more

Who are these people who like this place?? $12 bucks for a burger fries n drink--okay no problem I appreciate paying xtra bucks for quality products--but what U gave me is a soggy sloppy burger foil wrapped ( even the most basic food establishment knows hot meat, cheese n bun are not supposed to be foil wrapped???). Took 1 bite n the entire burger delapitated-- ended up eating chunks of glued together burger meat, cheese n meat with a fork. Five Guys to me is basically a more customizable, more expensive version of In & Out - fast, good quality burgers. I do love the fact that I can add a variety of toppings to my burger and one burger at Five Guys is enough to fill me up whereas In & Out, I'm always caught in between order 1 or 2 burgers. The fries are good, especially dipped in ketchup and malt vinegar. However, I definitely won't be ordering them to eat all by myself again since I barely made a dent last time. The malt vinegar is a great way to cut through the grease and the dense flavor from the burger and the fries. read more

Tried 5 Guys in Pleasanton not impressed at all and I stuck with In/Out. Later i moved to Brentwood and tried 5 Guys again. Burgers at fresh custom made to order with lots of condiments to choose from. Delicious juicy burger with an order of their natural cut fries, it puts all other chain restaurants to shame. read more

Love the burgers at this place, and the fries aren't too bad either! Also great that they have a fully configurable soda fountain. I wish they had a shake machine but we can't always get what we want everywhere! Grated one star down mostly because it's so unbelievably noisy in there. read more

Maybe I'm really picky when it comes to burgers cause I'm not a big meat eater but this place was not as good as people make it out to be. The burger was super greasy and falling apart, and there was nothing special about the taste it was such a basic burger! This specific location is also always superrrr packed because of all the students and workers coming by for lunch, and there's hardly any seating available. I'd still rather go to In N Out. Better than average burgers however also more expensive. Guess they kinda make up for it by giving a ton of fries and free peanuts. Order small fries and count your change. After examining my receipt and chuckling how expensive it was I realized that I was shorted a dollar. read more

WOW! This place is awesome. They have super yummy burgers and are like no other. When I'm in town again I will definitely come back. You can't really compare it to In and Out because they have more on the burger. In and Out would be considered plain Jane compared to this place. I like that there is plenty of seating here. This five guys in particular does burgers right. The few times ive been here ordering the bacon cheese burger with all the toppings the burger has been consistently great. Im sure they are even willing to cook the burger to your liking if asked. Never tried since it has always been good only down side are the huge amount of peanuts in the dinning area im not allergic but can see the issue it can cost. Good job 5 guys. read more

I tried this place for a second time to give them a second chance before reviewing. The food is pretty darn good but the staff is super rude and just don't seem to care or have any sense of urgency at all. It took 45 minutes to get my food. 45mins for a burger and fries and the burger was falling apart in the bag. I won't be coming back. read more

Went to Five Guys for the first time with my parents. My parents loved it. They enjoyed the free peanuts, all the toppings on their burger, and the fries. I did enjoy all the toppings we could choose from for our burger. I thought the price was a little steep for the food. I didn't think it was really a $5 burger worth, but I guess that's the price you pay for having 2 patties in a burger. The fries are said to be fresh cut, but I do prefer the In n Out fries better. They were a bit salty for my taste. The place was bustling and had overall good food. Plus you can't beat a place that gives out free peanuts. :) read more

NOT IN-N-OUT! So, I just discovered this Five Guys last week and I was really excited to check it out because I had heard it compared to In-N-Out. And of course, like every good Californian, I LOVE In-N-Out! Five Guys is NOTHING like In-N-Out. In fact, if I had to compare it to something I would say it's more like McDonalds or Burger King in the taste department. Not to mention it was significantly more expensive than In-N-Out. It cost me over $9 for a small cheeseburger (1 patty), small fries and regular drink. I could have gotten the same order at In-N-Out for $6. Now, the reason I gave them 3 stars instead of 2 is because I would go back to Five Guys over going to other places (McDonalds etc.) but since I am lucky enough to live in California and I can go to In-N-Out anytime I want, I would never choose Five Guys over that! read more
