Rounding up my 2.5 review to 3. Incredibly overrated. This review is pick up and go - I have NOT been inside. Our office used the online ordering with timed pick up - which is a very nice convenience. The burger is huge - I did not realize a regular burger was 2 patties. The meat was tasty - thats the best part. The bun was soggy and sesame - and reminded me exactly of McDonalds. The toppings were fresh - not reminding me of McDonalds there. And you can add whatever you want and as much as want - nice. Overall the flavor is just ok - it is VERY greasy: I could see it being good hang over food but In N Out has WAY more flavor and is much less greasy - at 480 calories it will always be much better than this 780 cal burger. When I came in to order lunch, this wonderful older lady took my order. As I was waiting at a table for my burger, I saw the cashier having trouble making a milkshake. She asked one of her younger coworkers for some help and all she did was barked back "You're supposed to be taking orders! Do that first!". I was appalled at the disrespect and aggression in her tone, and I felt so bad for the startled older lady. Treat your team members with respect. Mushrooms on your burger, and french fries that don't even attempt to be wholesome or healthy. That's why you hit Five Guys rather than In N Out. This is the only Five Guys location I've ever visited, so I acknowledge that it might be different elsewhere...but wow, this place just does not compare to In N Out! First of all, there's no drive-thru -- a huge plus of In N Out is that they understand what it's like to eat a double-double while driving, so they set it up nice for you. Secondly, of the dozen-or-so In N Outs I've ever been to, they're always staffed with the most competent employees among fast food joints; that simply wasn't the case here, where I waited an additional 30 seconds for my order while three employees chatted in the corner. Thirdly, no matter how crazy-busy an In N Out location gets, the tables are generally clean and trash cans are frequently emptied. This Five Guys was stuffy and dirty even on a not-too-busy weeknight. On to the food: The burger was good but with the hype around this joint it needed to be mind-blowingly delicious. As for the fries? My fries soaked clear through the thick cardboard cup and through a stack of napkins to completely drench the entire paper bag with oil. Tastier than In N Out fries, for sure. But leaving little oil stains on my passenger seat? That's just not cool. I do like the mushroom option, and I do crave ultra-greasy fries once every few months. So under specific circumstances I'd go here over In N Out. I had heard somewhere that people liked this place before they opened and it was always busy, so I happened to stop by for lunch today. I ordered the cheeseburger with "Everything", small fries, and a small drink. First, that meal was just shy of $12. Not really a great deal by the accounts of the signs on the wall of review snippets saying it's a bargain. The fries ... very average and not any better really (maybe color wise) than In-and-Out fries. With them advertising that it's cooked in peanut oil, I thought they may actually make them properly (2 stage blanching cook). I really don't know, but they don't taste like they do. I think McDonalds are tastier. However, they serve a ton of fries and a small can serve two people. I didn't even finish 1/2. Very average flavor. The burger ... very average again. Meat seems very standard and not a good blend (if you've been to Val's in Hayward, you know what a good blend tastes like). It comes with two thin patties. The best thing about the burger was the toppings (like the mushrooms). But you shouldn't go to a burger joint because the mayo is good. The meat is cooked extremely well done and somewhat dry (meat selection / cooking). It's not bad ... just extremely average. Customer service was decent and speed was OK. One negative item that stands out in my mind, is no matter where you eat it (in or out), they serve you in a brown paper bag. I don't mind if my malt liquor comes that way, but don't serve me a sit down meal in a bag. You're now forced to sit down and figure out if you want to use the bag as a mini-table cloth, or use the wrapper of the burger as a plate. If you choose the wrapper, you have to dig into your bag, past the fries, and try to retrieve your burger without spilling fries all over the unclean table (high turnover means you don't always get a clean table. I almost ranked this meal at a 3 but dinged them for making you eat out of a freakin' feed bag. They do serve Coke products which is always a bonus as well as it being a self serve fountain machine. Decent. I used to go to Five Guys when I lived on the east coast because they didn't have In-n-out there. The burgers are alot bigger than those at in-n-out, but at the same time, alot more expensive. Taste wise, they are satisfactory, and you have to tell them what you want on your burger. I usually get the "Little" burgers because they're filling enough for me. The regular burgers have two patties and are significantly more expensive. Their fries are given in these cups, overflowed into the bag, but again, comes with a price. You can easily share the regular fries between two people, the large between 3 or 4 people. I've always come here when I was extremely hungry so everytime it tasted amazing, but still, I think I prefer in n out more. read more

Crowded house so it must be good. Today was my first time and it was great. Earlier today we had done a trail run and burned over 1100 calories so we decided juicy, fatty food should be for lunch. Lol! Trying to be good I ordered the cheese veggie sandwich. What does that mean? Too expensive for its own good. Five Guys reminds me of a more expensive In-N-Out knock off. Same decor, more options but you pay for it at the end. Lets compare the two. Value I ordered a regular burger, coke and Cajun fries and the total came out to $11.50. For a fast food burger chain that is way too much. For that money you can get two double doubles, two fries and two cokes at In-N-Out. Or you can pull a wild card and get a better burger at Nations with fries and a coke plus a slice of pie. Burger Honestly, if I had a blind taste test between burgers at Five Guys and In-N-Out, I probably couldn't tell the difference. They are both very good. Five guys separates itself with their toppings. You can get normal toppings like lettuce, tomatoes and grilled onions but unlike In-N-Out you can also get grilled mushrooms, jalapenos, hot sauce and bbq sauce. Everything except bacon is included in the cost of the hamburger. Which is a few dollars more than its rival. Fries The french fry offering at Five Guys easily beats out In-N-Out's feeble attempt at french fries. However, there is one major flaw at Five Guys. The smallest size you can get cost you $2.75. With that you get a ton of french fries. It was so much that I didn't even finish them. I wish they would have a smaller size that cost a little cheaper. (I cant believe I just wrote that sentence.) Misc. Five guys also offers hot dogs, free peanuts and Cherry Coke that In-N-Out doesn't offer. So if you want a burger with a lot of topping and boat load of fries check out Five Guys. They should call it Three Guys, because I'm giving it Three Stars. I had two of their burgers this weekend: the bacon burger and the cheese burger. The cheese burger was by far the better of the two. Five Guys. Apparently according to some studies, Five Guys is "America's Favorite Fast Food Place". With that said, I have to say that America's opinions scare me sometimes. Sure it's better then McDonalds. Sure its better then most fast food places. But Five Guys is supposed to be high tier right? When you walk in, FIve Guys has reviews all over the place. It really really hypes it up. "WE ARE THE ABSOLUTE BEST FREAKING BURGER YOU'LL EVER HAVE!" I beg to differ. It's good. Better then most but off the top of my head I can think of two chain restaurants that make a better burger: Red Robin and In-N-Out. Anyway. The staff was nice enough. And it's cool that you can make orders online. (Something no other fastfood place does). The fries are good. In fact for a real treat, when the Burlingame Five Guys opens up, I will drive to In-N-Out for their burger and then Five Guys for their Cajun fries. But seriously, this place is not the end all be all. The food is greasy and they use peanut oil on everything instead of 100% vegetable oil like In-N-Out uses. My friend raved and raved about this place and consistently reminded me to check out the "new" In-N-Out. SO, thankfully one opened up by my house (when I was home to visit from LA) and so I decided to go check it out. First off, way better than Taxi's. Very glad that place is gone because that place literally served burnt hamburgers every time I went there. However, I guess you could argue that being a step up from Taxi's isn't really saying much. I don't know who designed this place but it is set up like an In-N-Out, it's just... annoying. There are reviews plastered on every open space on the wall. I don't like walking into a place where all they have to look at are reviews about how great the food is, really irritating. The color scheme in the place is a headache. Red and white, on and off, really annoying. The service was fine. Ordering the food is actually very easy although they don't offer meals (burger, fries and a drink deal) which is alright I guess. The pricing is a little much. For a Bacon Cheeseburger with a regular soda cost about 10 dollars. For the same price without gratutity I can go to Red Robin right over the freeway and get an awesome burger with fries and unlimited fries. The ingredients were well prepared. It's just, I feel like I could have made the same exact thing at home. The meat isn't too flavorful and the buns are insanely soft, which is nice but once it starts to fall apart I won't eat it. I know there is an arguement going around saying that this place is better than In-N-Out. They aren't the same place really. Five Guys lets you customize your burger and In-N-Out has a signature burger that you can kind of tweek to your liking. After I had In-N-Out for the first time, I CRAVED it for weeks. I was meeting a client in Dublin and there it was just across the street. I asked two guys what they thought of it compare to In N Out. First guy says it depends because they are different, he tried to persuade me to go to this other joint instead. The second guy says it depends if you want a suburban burger or a ghetto burger. I'm thinking what kind of answer is that, until I tried it. In the restaurant it was busy. They have like twenty or more signs with reviews from other cities. I knew right then it was going to be downhill. Food, just like my profession, photography, if they have to explain it with words you know they are overselling their product. They also had around ten signs in the bathrooms too. Danger zone I told myself as I waited for my order. Ok, let's talk burger and fries now. The lettuce not crispy and cool like In N Out, soggy, with two soggy tomatoes one on top of each other and three pickles again, one on top of each other, so you had to open up the bun and separate them. The quality control is just not there. The fries is thick cut Idaho skin on potatoes. Some would like this but I'm not a fan of thick cut. It just seems like you can get this almost at any burger joint. In N Out has tight quality control, crispy cool vegetables, if you order crispy fries the order person yells to the fry guy to drop the fries fast so it won't take too long. There's always someone in the back cutting fresh fat onions or potatoes so you know it's fresh. Their people is just friendlier. I think I know what that guy means by ghetto or suburban burgers. It's two different types of burgers and fries. It depends what you want and when I crave a burger it's a suburban burger :). I came here on a Monday afternoon. There were many people eating, but no line. I didn't like how I had to wait almost 10 minutes for my burger, but it's even longer at In N Out. The burger was okay. I like the grilled bun with sesame seeds, but the pickles were gross. They told me they only offer grilled onions, not raw, so that sucked. The fries were all dark brown and nasty. My friend told me that's how they are made - with peanut oil, so they are really crispy. I'll probably try it again since this was my first time, but it's your basic burger place... nothing special. read more

Ate lunch here, not very crowded(?). Everything on the menu is a la carte (meaning you order the burger, fries and drink separately). Hence a $12 tab (ordered a small burger/fries/drink). A bit pricey for this kind of place, IMO. I think Fuddruckers has a much better presentation (you also top/fixuns your own burger) and slightly better prices. Their combo is less than similar 5-guys a la carte choices. My (small) burger was good size/serving, as were the fries (overflowed cup). Neither tasted overly resplendent (more like a Nations Giant-Burger). The burger was bland and fries (non-Cajun) were flat. I used a side of mayo to dip them in (which helped). I suspect they don't salt/pepper the patties while cooking (or they don't sprinkle enough?). You 'need' to do this to jazz-up the meat (especially, with most patrons (now) cooking patties to a 'medium' cook). Not a bad place but there a bunch of better burgers out there (for less and equal pricing), that do a much better job with a burger/fries. Like I stated before, Fuddruckers is definitely better, "The Counter" too. I would say 5-guys is more like "Nations". I don't do burger/fries much but I would not return here. This review update is adding a half star to my previous review. The reason being is for...the hot dog! Friends and I came back here and instead of the burger I wanted to try the hot dog. You can customize the toppings on this one as well. I got the bacon dog with ketchup, mustard, relish, tomatoes, jalapenos. This hot dog is delicious. Very flavorful. I like how they cut the hot dog in half and it's almost more like a sandwich than a hot dog. Cajun fries are always on point. Share a regular size with a friend, it's plenty of fries! Pretty tasty burger and fries. We got the cheeseburger with everything minus the grilled mushrooms and added jalapeño slices and shared an order of small fries. The bun held up well against the juicy toppings and patty, which they smash to to smithereens on the fry top. I guess that takes a lot of the grease out of the patty, but some of the flavor too. Nevermind that since the burger is loaded with sauces and extras to make it taste better than the average burger. The fries were well seasoned and fresh, so good with a dollop of cool Heinz ketchup. They are nice and crispy, with the perfect amount of seasoning. It is located right next to a theatre in a huge shopping center. As long as it isn't during holidays or weekends, parking usually isn't too big of a hassle. The restaurant is medium sized, but the air conditioning tends to make the restaurant cold and windy all the time.
