Sunday 6/1/08 (3 of 3) Immediately after the Metromix (http://losangeles.metromix.com/) party at the W, it was finally time to go to the much anticipated tasting of Five Guys. It was a good idea to put some food into my body after drinking two mojitos with an ice cream and cookie filled stomach. I don't know if it was the over-hype of this place or if my frequent visit to a nearly islands restaurant, I guess I should've probably known from Tony C's review of this place, it wasn't quite up to my burger standards. I'm not going into details here but the burger was just aiight. It wasn't messy like I had imagined it. It was juicy, but tasted undercooked and unsalted. However, the salt guy went crazy over the fries. I think 2 stix of salty fries was more than enough for my daily salt allowance. BTW, texture and and first taste of these fries were good, slightly better than Inn and Out but still not better than Islands. Some non food notes I like to point out here that may interest you: This place is a bit hidden since there are no large signs, but not hard to find. There are no napkin holders here, you will have to request it. I didn't even get any inside my bag. I'm sure it was a cost reduction measure. They put everything in a brown bag. I thought that was kind of cool,reducing waste at all but then realized the fries are all over the inside of the bag,might not be a great idea for long trips. The floor they have here, I'm not sure if its ceramic tile but it slips! I wore my dress shoes and I've almost slipped twice, watch out near the drink and condiment station. The Men's urinal tilework is uneven and slippery. So if you are going to pee, don't be surprised if you are leaning towards the right when you are almost finished. read more

Decent burgers, simple menu, priced reasonably, and the toppings are f@cking FREE! Simply put, endless options are what make a foodie's world go round, but quality and taste are what knocks us off our axis, gives a little shaky-shake, and replaces everything back in order. What a ride! I didn't quite get that spectacular ride from five guys, but I will admit, it isn't half-bad, or anywhere near bad at all. I recall ordering the bacon cheese dog with mushrooms and fries, and also tried the bacon cheeseburger. Both were worthy of a comeback, but I will agree that the meat was a wee bit dry and paper thin. I must commend their free toppings though. I mean no one really offers that up anymore, so kudos to five guys for that. A bit weirded out by the brown paper bag though. There is nothing new I can say about Five Guys. What I can say is that it is an awesome burger place where you can get your burger fix. I was going about town this one evening, and wrapping up business before heading home. I was getting hungry, and decided to hit up a Five Guys in the area. This was the closest location to me at the time, so I made my way here. This location is located near Carson mall. Parking is plentiful here, and the area is pretty safe. The restaurant itself is small, well lit, clean, and staffed with friendly people. I ordered my usual hamburger, with veggies, condiments, and jalapenos. The burger was as great as in any other Five Guys locations. This place served its purpose well, five stars! read more

Even though there's a Five Guys in Naperville now, my first visit to this franchise was in Carson, CA. Great double-pattied burger for $4.49. I like the free or "pre-paid" extras - grilled onions, mushrooms, jalepeno peppers, mild or hot BBQ sauce. I didn't try the BBQ sauce, but will leave that for another visit. Of the burger joints I've tried, I think they have the best burger in this price range, beating out Meat Heads. Portillo's still has best in $3.25 range, and Kuma's Corner is king in the all-around and heavyweight category. I need to get to an In-and-Out in Calif though - they have a great reputation for mid priced burgers. read more

My experience here tonight was bad customer service from Kristopher. As soon as we walked in, he rolled his eyes as if he mad that "more customers" were coming in. It was so obvious that I laughed it off and said out loud "sorry" and he said nah it's ok! He proceeded to wash his hands, came to the register without greeting and started aggressively tapping in "maybe the code" to unlock the register. I ignored it and started my order, as I said my order he continued to aggressively tap EVERY THING into the register with a straight face without saying a word. I didn't get to really order my burger the exact way I wanted because I was disturbed by his behavior. I looked at my husband and whispered "I don't want to eat here" my husband proceeded with ordering because we literally drove a long way and he even received the same treatment. Let's start off at the positives. My burger was pretty good I was able to choose all the toppings I wanted and the customer service wasn't bad either. The restaurant was clean and tidy. No we can go into some of the things I didn't care for. Cheeseburger had a lot of stuff in it and the bugs could barely contain it. I found it by eating it upside down that I was able to keep it all with in the buns. The french fries were not to my liking. They were oily and did not seem to be cooked by using the two stage method where you get that nice crispy outside and fluffy center. The worst portion of my experience was the fact that a hamburger fries and large Coke set me back about $20 oh my god there was nothing worse then feeling like you've been gouged. Yes the prices were on the board but it was still a major sticker shock when I heard the price. I understand restaurants need to make a profit usually they triple or quadruple the food cost but in this case it really seems like they're going above the norm. read more

I walk into five guys on March 10, around 6:30 pm and the first thing I notice is how clean the restaurant was. Although, Workers were lacking enthusiasm I was not at all affected because I do understand that they were indeed busy and short staffed. The worker that assisted me had effective communication skills she was very attentive and listened to my entire order she also had a sort of readiness to her demeanor, not as if she was rushing me but she was ready to take my order. The environment was extremely clean which is always an A+. I just ate over 2000 calories in one meal. I got the double bacon cheeseburger, "all the way," which means mayo, lettuce, pickles, tomatoes, grilled onions, grilled mushrooms, ketchup, and mustard. It's 920 calories (not counting the second patty) and 1314 calories for the large fries. (Not to mention the soda.) I was excited about eating here, but my excitement quickly faded. The fries seemed old. This was a big letdown considering their fries are supposed to be famous. They were also extremely salty, to the point that they were almost inedible. The burger, on the other hand, was quite delicious. I enjoy burgers in harmony with the fries, so the experience as a whole could have been much better. There should be no comparison to In-N-Out in any way. Maybe the price point is similar and the red and white color theme but the burgers are completely different ball games. I was due to a revisit here as my first experience was with their hot dog and there was nothing hot about it. Maybe bc I never received the jalapeños on the side that I asked for. Hi I'll take a 550 little cheeseburger please. I still don't get it that 1,000 island is not a burger topping choice but A1 steak sauce is. I got my little burger topped with my fixins and headed over to the soda machine. The soda machine on my first visit was my enemy as all the sodas were flat tasting. I'm happy to report that my Coke Zero on this visit had plenty of tiny fizzing bubbles. I got my burger in a brown paper bag even though I was dining there. I hated this the last time and still hated it this time. SO WASTEFUL! Maybe if they spent the extra money on those new nifty compostable bags and such I wouldn't feel as bad. Alas they do not, so do your job and SAVE A TREE and order your groups food all together to eliminate as many brown bags used as possible. My burger was tiny but I did order the "little" burger. But for 550 calories not including my topping choices I felt like I had to. There was no way I was going to order the 920 calorie bacon cheeseburger that comes standard with two patties. My burger was averagely good and hit the humongous hunger spot. I got your classic burger toppings; lettuce, tomato, raw onions and poor mans 1,000 island (ketchup, mayo, relish). Large order of fries is way more than enough for two people but probably the perfect amount for three. As we munched on them after we ate our burgers HC said it perfect when he said, " yeah not as good as when you are hungry". But fries are a necessity when eating a burger. The staff was friendly and they had AWESOME tunes playing so I was happily singing along with one on the workers that was singing very loud while cooking up some burgs. From the Southbay Pavillion 1.5 hours after grand opening... (what? where?) Prior disclosure: I've never wanted peanuts before my burger, nor do I lcare about Zagat ratings. We're in LA. Zagat is so "2001". 15 red shirts in the kitchen = 5 min wait for my Counter-esque order. Verdict to come in about 30 seconds. So far, the freshly cut cajun fries are passable and I don't get the hype even with the franchisees sitting next to me. The order: $5.49 bacon cheeseburger (mayo/ketchup/lettuce/grilled onions/pickled/tomato) with a splash of Heinz malt vinegar. Call me a traditionalist but you won't catch me dead with BBQ sauce or jalapenos on a burg. Construction: warmed hence limp iceberg lettuce, very doughy bun, 2 thick cuts of tomato small in diameter, total burger (2 x 3.3 oz hand formed patties) height approx 3" tall. Taste: better than In N Out, but subpar against 2 local hoodie burger joints (Mom's and Big Burger - right up the block). Patties have good burnt protein grill taste, but unseasoned. Grilled onions greasy but not caramelized. Bun was completely soaked thru by wet veg/unsealed patty jus turning into doughy gooey mess. And yes, I ate the burg in about 2 min flat. Gross. Going back to Cali, Cali Going back to Cali. I first ate Five Guys in Maryland on vacation before Five Guys made their way to Cali. I was informed that they are the best burgers on the East Coast. For me being a so Cal girl, I needed a lot of convincing when you tell me its the best. When we came back to Cali, I kept my eye open for 5 guys to make their debut. When they first arrived in Cali about 6 years ago the closest location was here in Carson. It was a bit of a drive from the OC, but I wanted to be convinced. So once you enter the peanut gallery, you can scoop up a handful of peanuts and eat them, dropping your shells on the floor as you make your way to the counter. Your choice is either burgers or a weinie. The burgers are double, unless you order a baby, which is a single patty. Then you pick and chose your toppings. Starting with sauces there is bbq, ketchup, mustard mayo, A1, ect. Then chose veggies from bell pepper, onions, grilled onions, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, ect. Then add bacon. We all know everything tastes good with bacon. The burgers and weinies come on a fresh baked bun. Fries come from a different place every time depending on where the potatoe is harvested from. Service is always fast and friendly. LOTS of stuff on walls to look at. Costs is average about $7.00 a meal. SO, why 3 stars? In and Out is a 4 to me. Finding a burger joint is as easy as finding a lawyer in a courthouse. They are on every corner, every strip mall and you can even find them tucked away in some of swankiest Republican hangouts. What did I expect from Five Guys of Carson? Just another burger stop in the burbs, in probably the most unremarkable mall this side of the Atlantic - Carson Mall. Maybe what I expected is not the right question, maybe it is what I was hoping to find and did I find it. There's nothing new at Five Guys, the decor looks like a bastard child of a union between Johhny Rockets and In n Out, the ordering line a dejavu of Chipotle, the menu a dumb down version of the Counter, and free bulk peanuts reminicient of a less messy Johnny Rebs. I had their 920 calories Bacon Cheese burger and loaded up on most of their toppings, so let's call it an even 1,100 cals. Top that with more than just a hand full of their cajun fries and I could barely fit all them calories into a whole days dietary allotment like a plus size honey squeezing into a size 3 dress. Ok, by now you are probably thinking, if this dude is so concern with calories maybe, just maybe, he should get his butt down to a vegan restaurant and much down on some compost. No, you see this is this new age love hate relationship thing. I love burgers but I gotta beat myself up for eating it, so bear with me. Ok, did I find what I was hoping for? Almost. Allow me to use a silver screen analogy, it was worth the price of a ticket but it ain't gonna win best picture. The burger was large fresh and flavorful and all the toppings played nice together. First off, I'm not here to join the great debate of which burger is better, Five Guys or In-N-Out. I'm not even going to tell you which burger I prefer because it really doesn't matter. I'm here to tell you all that although Five Guys may not make the best burger I've ever tasted, I'm still a fan. This location of Five Guys is located at the South Bay Pavilion, just outside of Sears. Five Guys is a decent sized joint, with both inside and outside seating available. The inside of Five Guys just happens to look identical to the inside of an In-N-Out, everything from the red and white checkered walls to the red booths to the open kitchen and ordering area. The one thing I loved about Five Guys is the fact they offer free peanuts to their customers. The menu at Five Guys contains burgers, hot dogs, a few sandwiches and French fries. On our latest visit, this is what the wife and I ordered: Double bacon cheese burger with grilled onions, grilled mushrooms, jalapenos, lettuce, BBQ sauce, pickles and tomatoes Bacon cheddar hot dog with grilled onions, relish, BBQ sauce and mustard Cajun French fries Their burgers here are double by default (thanks for the line, Eli), which is awesome in my book. I like my burger patties cooked medium rare but my wife likes hers well done so when our patties came out medium well, we were both happy. The bacon was nice and crispy and they loaded our burger with lots of fresh, raw jalapenos and grilled onions. I just think it's so cool that Five Guys allows you to pile on the toppings for no additional fees. The bacon cheddar hot dog was also pretty tasty. I appreciated the fact that you can add any toppings to your dogs for no fee as well. The Cajun fries were a tad salty but still had a great flavor. We got all this food, plus a large drink, for about fifteen dollars, which is really cheap. The service here has always been good. The staff is always friendly and the food seems to come out quickly. Again, I'm not writing this review to compare burgers from Five Guys and In-N-Out. I'm simply writing this to tell you all to try this place for yourself and come up with your own conclusion. I honestly enjoyed Five Guys and will come here again if I'm short on cash and in desperate need of a big, greasy, cheap burger. I'm not a burger fan, though when it comes to simplicity on d menu, this burger edged out In-N-Out burger by giving free toppings on whatever you want and the fries...oh the Cajun fries, I'm hungry for you rite now. I ordered Little Bacon Cheeseburger coz I heard the regular comes with double patty, so Little just came with 1 patty and if you check my pic, unlike In-N-Out, the patty here wasn't flat, it's pretty big and with the options of all toppings or select what you want, the price of $4.39 is pretty good for its value. If this joint was any closer, I would have visited more often. I got mine with lettuce, grilled mushrooms, raw onion, and spicy sauce. Booo, didn't taste any spicyness from it at all. Otherwise, this burger was darn good. I love the options of cajun or regular fries, and of course, without a doubt, I'd go for Cajun, wished they would sprinkle more cajun spice on top of it, but heck, it was good. I liked it. One of the best part of the fries was that, Five guys told you where the potato came from that day, it's very interesting info to know. Almost forgot to mention, they put out peanut in a box if you want to eat them while waiting for your food to come out and YES, they're FREE. Double Cheeseburger + Mushrooms + all the toppings you want for less than 5 bucks. I like to say I can eat, but the double cheeseburger was just too much. YUM fries were soooooooooooooooooo delicious. All the Peanuts you eat....and if you're allergic, there's a sign letting you know BEFORE you walk in that there are peanuts everywhere. I meant to write a review of this place a while back ago when I first came here, and I've been back several times since my first visit. I think this place is as good as In-N-Out. I like the variety of choices to top your burger...A1 sauce, a couple of different types of cheeses. The fries are a bit on the greasy side, but they're good. You can get spicy fires. I like 'em for a change of pace. Five Guys also has complimentary all you can eat roasted peanuts in a shell. As for the price, it's slightly a bit more than In-N-Out. If it's good enough for President Obama, then it's good for me! It's time for Change! read more

I've had Five Guys before on one of my tours of the east side, and my main memories of the event were, "Yay they have bacon!" and, "Meh." I wasn't too impressed before and this time around I had the same reaction. I had just eaten three hotdogs from Ikea, so I was still a little hungry. I ordered a bacon cheese burger, knowing it was a double by default. Sadly no tomatoes, but I added some BBQ sauce and mayo to lube things up. While waiting for my burger there were no peanuts to be seen. Meh, like others have said I could care less about eating peanuts before a burger. There's an awful lot of accolades for Five Guys! I feel a let down coming! As I entered, an overwhelming feeling of being in the South came upon me. That's a nice feeling, by the way! I loved the fact that the cashier had a welcoming smile and was bubbly. She explained that the regular hamburgers are doubles. Wow, I like this place already! :-) So what makes this place unique? Well, you get to build your burger one topping at a time to your taste or tell the cashier you want it with "Everything". I went with a regular burger everything sans mayo and a regular order of fries. You pick up your order when your number is called and surprise, surprise, surprise...your meal is handed to you in a plain brown bag! Burger: 3/5 There's nothing really special about Five Guys' version of the hamburger. My initial impression after peeling away the tin foil wrapping was, "Wow, it looks like a burger I can make at home!" My burger did look tasty and had two decent sized patties. At least they are not wimpy thin patties like at In-N-Out or Tommy's. So was it tasty? I believe In-N-Out burgers are tastier than Five Guys. Fries: 2/5 Five Guys fries are fresh and thick cut and they use Peanut Oil to fry them in. They seemed too dark and soggy with grease for my tastes. Their cajun version is not so bad. Value: 2/5 For a fast food chain, I would have anticipated a better value. 2 burgers, 1 order of regular fries and 2 regular drinks came out to $17! Hmm... The only reason why i didn't give 1-star is because the staff is always bright and friendly, and the restaurant is kept in sparklin condition (even with all the peanut shells that get scattered). When I think of a fabulous, gourmet burger, I think Father's Office. When I think of a burger with a ton of interesting toppings, I think The Counter. When I think of cheap, fresh, and tasty, I think In n Out. Past reviewers of Five Guys included all these ideas in their posts. So what did I think? 1) No flavor. I got the one patty cheeseburger with all the "red" toppings and raw onion. I tasted nothing. My burger had one small piece of lettuce, some flavorless mushrooms underneath it, raw onion pieces that were hiding here and there, mayo, ketchup, and it STILL didn't taste like anything. I don't think my meat was even seasoned!! Even when meat's not seasoned, if you cook it right, the meat itself is da bomb, so if it's supposedly so good and fresh, why didn't it taste like anything??? 2) Bad bread. What's up with the plain, white, soggy bread? It was fluffy, but again, it didn't taste like anything! I'd rather have my bread grilled, I'm sorry. 3) Bad fries. Our fries were way overdone, were extremely salty, and also soggy. They were a waste of money and calories, and I love french fries and potatoes. Saying this is hard for me to do. 4) No shakes. I don't even get shakes at In n Out, but at least the option is there! Does this place blow In n Out out of the water??? Heck no!!! It drowns miserably in its wake. If you want a burger matching any of the specifications above, choose one of the other establishments I mentioned, and you'll be more than satisfied. read more

Comparisons have been made to In-N-Out, and they will continue. I'm not really concerned with taking a point by point inventory of their particular strengths. What really matters to me is how I feel about my meal when I walk out the door. I walked out of Five Guys stuffed. I couldn't have another bite -- not that there was one left. I was giddy just seeing my burger sitting in front of me. As with any great meal, all conversation came to a screeching halt as soon as the food was introduced to our table. I routinely complain about under-seasoned fries, not here my friend. A meal for two is more expensive here than the SoCal favorite, but who the hell has the time to argue over a $11 bill vs $17. If you want to save money, stay home and eat some noodles. If you're going to go out to eat, indulge your taste buds and stop being a cheap ass. read more

Finally got a chance to try out Five Guys and make my own comparison to SoCal's favorite In N Out. But no, it really can't be done since Five Guys and In N Out are so different. At Five Guys, you choose the type of burgers you want and add AS MANY TOPPINGS as you want. That's pretty awesome considering since by the end, my burger was taller than other's. For my first visited, opted for the cheeseburger with grilled onions, mushrooms, jalapenos, extra lettuce, tomato, and BBQ sauce. Nothing too crazy about the burger patty but I do like the toppings. A regular burger comes with two patties and two slices of cheese. They all go together quite well with the BBQ sauce and it is juicy and somewhat messy eating it, just like how a good burger should be. Next time wouldn't mind trying it with the A-1 sauce. Oh warning: jalapenos are raw so don't expect those pickled ones. The only thing I would complain about is that the bread is too soft. It totally comes apart if you're not careful. The bun itself is quite airy so don't think it is because it is stale and probably the way it is baked. Would've been nice if they toast it actually :P As for their fries, for a little less than $3, you get a cup full of these thick, fresh cut fries. Of course with fresh cut fries, they always tend to be softer and not crunchy. It's fried in peanut oil so it has a great aroma to it. The fries are good and would definitely go for the cajun. It just adds a bit more kick. I wonder if I can order them well-done though... hmm. There are also hot dogs on the menu! Bacon cheese dog sounds awesome. A cool thing here: free peanuts! Yes they have free peanuts for you to munch on while you wait for your burger. They do have shells but c'mon don't be lazy! Of course that also means people with peanut allergies... beware. Five Guys is definitely a no frills sort of burger place and I can see why so many love it (like Zagat) and I definitely need a few more visits but when it comes down to it, I think if you grew up in Cali or wherever there's an In N Out, Five Guys is not taking In N Out's place anytime soon. read more

I just realized that rhymes!!! Dude, seriously, this place is really good! Never heard of it til Obama had that White House show, but this place is close to my work in Torrance. Came in, ordered a Little Burger with pickles, lettuce, tomatoes, grilled onions, ketchup & mustard. And a reg fries. Came out to 6.57 or something like that. I was not sure how they planned to put all that crap on one "little burger". Burger was not little, it was just the perfect size. The beef was fabulous, the buns were toasted and the topics were hand placed and it showed, the toppings were all evenly distributed all over the burger. mmmm. The fries are incredible! I love that you know that they are from real potatoes, unlike other fast food chains. Food came out fast and fresh, no fuss. The kitchen is open and clean and very methodical, great system laid out! I've been on a diet for a month, so this was a great treat to have and I think I'll make it a monthly ritual! read more

This would be my favorite casual burger spot if it wasn't for In-n-out. They do have them beat with their Cajun fries, but I still prefer the burger at In-n-out. I always get the LBC - little bacon cheeseburger. That burger always fills me up... I seriously can't understand how everyone get the double patty! Not sure if prices have gone up, but I spent around 11-12 dollars for myself... a little too much. I wish there was either a combo or a smaller fry. read more
