But thats not how the story started. I walked in and the place looks ok. There were 10 million people working...which sort of bugged me because it was kinda empty. So what the heck were all the people doing? Literally there's a person for cooking burgers, a person to put the lettuce, a person to place the tomato, another person to put on pickle #1, then pickle #2, ...seriously? And when you walk in, the person at the counter announces it. "2 in the door!" "1in the door!" So it scared me slight that they were announcing my entrance. Also, they serve peanuts for snacking while you wait. Random eh? Then my burger came. I was expecting something mammoth in size because of the picture they showed...but it was tiny! And it was way more expensive! But that all went away when I started eating. Man that burger is TASTY! The meat has that nice grilled taste you get from a neighborhood bbq, and the bun was just melt in your mouth. And the size?! How deceiving! Half way through I was like, "Seriously? This tiny thing is going to defeat me? BAH!" The fries with the extra spice were also very delish. Now the question that's on everyone's mind is..."is it better than in-n-out?" and my answer is, that the two cannot be compared. They're different....and both very very very good. After hearing all the CRAZE about how amazing this place is, I had to try it. We arrived at 11:15am, and that's what..only 15 minutes after it opened and by 11:30am, the restaurant was PACKED! The line was long & the employees were hard at work. I could tell they were in such a rush to get things done, it seemed really hectic. All we ordered were two cheeseburgers & a large fries (total of about $16), but it took 30 minutes for us to receive our order. The burger is really good, I gotta give it to them. Two patties and whatever toppings you wanted, not bad! But the fries...ehhh...I wasn't too crazy about it. It tastes similar but not as amazing as it is at this one certain mom's&pop's joint in the SFValley where I grew up (Daglas). They weren't hot anymore & were getting soggy. If I had to choose honestly, I'd stick with In N Out; better price, more locations that are closer for me, and the deliciousness that I'm so used to. This place reminded me of In-N-Out the moment I saw it. I was impressed at the size of the burger as I was not expecting them to put in two burger patties. It's beyond decent at the price you pay for it. And the fries here were delicious, I couldn't stop munching on them throughout my meal. I intentionally requested no mayo, ketchup, or mustard of any kind for my burger because I like to see how juicy the burger itself was on its own. And compared to In-N-Out or the Counter, it was just a bit more dry. But overall, still a good burger to have. read more

I got a little bacon burger all the way without ketchup and with regular onions instead of grilled ones (I like the crunch). I was sad that the onions were chopped instead of sliced. Mushrooms were meh and didn't add anything. The bacon was good but it didn't make up for the bun which was sub-par and lacked its own body to handle the toppings. So in terms of burger, it's okay but the toasted bun of In-n-Out and its fresher taste win out in my book. The fries: I got regular cajun. The spice was alright but my fries were sadly undercooked. Every single one of them lacked the crunch I look for in a fry. I think it's because they only fry them once instead of twice. I will say the cajun spice left a really good aftertaste though. So overall it was kinda meh, not bad per se but nothing to write home about. The thing that keeps this place in the 3 star range for me was the little things: peanuts in the shell, malt vinegar, and the friendly young workers. Final thoughts: I can fully understand why people like this place but I don't think it's really for me. I would say In-n-Out is the winner and I would need to try Fatburger again to give an accurate comparison there. I would actually rate them a 3.5 (only because the guy at the cashier guessed me as a One-Patty girl and I felt briefly skinny.) It was loud when I walked in. I took that as a sign they were doing very good business. The tables were almost full to capacity and people were really chowing down. The best part of my experience is that a manager was there doing training. I was amazed not only at how precise and extensive the training was for the grill staff, but that she was explaining why for every correction she made to the employees. This is a place that is all about perfection between each custom order and how the product matches the order. I don't have much to say about the burger. It was okay and prepared as I ordered. I guess the funny part is how we expect a business to get extra points for getting it right rather than that being the base level of a rating and extra stars being for above and beyond. Now I do have to mention the fries. On my visit, the potatoes were from Redmond WA. It was a sweeter fry than I'm used to but just the fact that it didn't taste like the frozen chemical mash at burger places was a treat. Last year when I went to D.C. for spring break, my good friend Stephanie C. who lives out there raved on and on during my stay that we had to go to Five Guys. Unfortunately, I was a lazy bum and refused to eat anywhere that wasn't within walking distance, so we didn't end up going. Fast forward to last weekend when the boy took me to Five Guys because he too has been raving about this place. Is Five Guys worth all the praise? Actually, yeah. The burgers are fresh and juicy, and I like the fact that you can customize them all the way down to the condiments (no mustard for me, thank you very much). I made the mistake of ordering my little burger with green pepper because I thought it meant green chili peppers, like an Anaheim or a Poblano, but it was just a bell pepper and not a very thoroughly grilled one at that. But otherwise my burger was pretty rad. Now, I've heard a lot of comparison of Five Guys to In-N-Out, which I love truly and have since I was a little girl, and meh--I just don't see it. Yes, they both make fresh delicious burgers, but the flavors are completely different, and I would never pick one over the other. Can't I just love both and switch them off? The fries looked a little overdone, but tasted perfect. And I really like how they write the city and state of origin of your potatoes on a whiteboard on the wall. My potatoes came from some place in Washington state. I've already forgotten where, but it's a nice touch :) So why four stars? My only nitpick is that the fry guy kept eating fries as he was cooking them. I understand if you need to check your fries for doneness, but he did it several times with the same batch and then didn't change his gloves after shoving food in his mouth. It really grosses me out when food handlers eat right in front of customers. How hard is it to go into the back and pop it into your mouth! (And then wash your hands) Is that weird? Total shock. I initially got a forwarded article about the East coast chain coming in to reign over "In n' Out" territory of the West and was in complete awe. And to top it off, I then heard that their 1st location would be none other than my tiny little hometown of Carson.....say what?! This is better than the Ikea coming to the area in the 90's (the only thing that people remember about the city that I habitat in).....total shock indeed. I was estatic! Yes! Finally a chain that I would love to go to....our tiny city doesn't get the high volume of frequent customers so we are limited in terms of better food establishments....so we have become accustomed to venturing outside of the city to enjoy the great cuisine of Los Angeles. So I knew that I couldn't hold any bias when coming into Five Guys and automatically give them five-stars just for being in my hometown. It was time for me to be as critical and be as honest to my fellow Yelpers as I could, so here I go. .. Door to door from ordering my meal, till I actually got my meal = about 8 minutes, which was pretty good, since everything is made to order. My french fries were cooked crisp and did not grease up the paperbag that they were placed in (felt less guilty inhaling the whole bag). Good amount of salt and the flavor of fries were great. Ordered the "mini" cheeseburger w/grilled onions, tomato, lettuce, pickles and mustard (I was trying to get as close as a traditional In N' Out burger as I could). Meat was was full of flavor and so juicy. The burger was huge...bigger than what I would expect a 'mini" to appear. Service was on point and was consistent with keeping both the dining area and trash containers clean & trash free (great job!). Plus, you get an unlimited amount of roasted peanuts while you wait for your order. In N' Out has nothing similar to that! Overall, a five-star experience and completely honored that they decided to come to the city of Carson, where our city motto of "future unlimited" does hold truth to this establishment. I believe I have a past yelp review on 5 Guys out in Virginia when I visited last year. I knew for quite some time that they opened shop out in the West Coast so I decided to give it another chance. I wasn't too fond of the 5 Guys out in Virginia. The burgers lacked flavor and came out real soggy. The fries were decent at best. I went to the South Bay Pavilion to give it another go. I ordered the bacon cheeseburger with some cajun fries. The order took a little more than 10 minutes to complete. I don't mind waiting for fresh food. I also understood that there were a lot of people in the restaurant as well. I got my food and it looked identical to that of the ones in the East Coast. Signature foil wrapped burgers and cajun fries. That's where the similarities stopped. I took a bite out of the burger and was welcomed with a nice crisp taste. The burger tasted fresh and had lots of flavor to it. The bun wasn't soggy like that of it's East Coast counterpart. The bacon is nice and crunchy as well. I tried the cajun fries and it complimented the burger really well. All in all, I thought it was an excellent offering. I became a fan of it again now that it has come to the West Coast. I'm glad I gave it another chance. I would have missed out on a great meal if I stayed biased with it's East Coast franchise. read more

I had to try this place because everyone I've met from Florida says that this place is so great and that it's better than In-N-Out. I'm a HUGE fan of In-N-Out so when someone says something is better than that, I obviously had to see for myself. I went with 3 Floridians last Sunday to this location since it's on our way to LA. I had the regular burger with 2 patties, fried onions, fried mushrooms, lettuce, pickles, and ketchup. It was a huge burger and yes, I finished the whole thing. The burger tasted too meaty because of the 2 patties and it overshadowed the flavor of the onions and mushrooms. I think a "little" might've been the "just right" size to get the full flavor of this burger. The cajun fries was yummy and they had unlimited FREE peanuts! There's a box of it by the door and you can just grab as much as you want while waiting and then take some with you when you leave. Definitely a great place to go to when you're starving. Of course In-N-Out is still my favorite. =) read more

I won't even try to make the In N Out comparisons because other than the simple, straightforward menu and the red and white decor, I didn't see many similarities. What I did see was a juicy, delicious cheeseburger on a sesame seed bun and a huge order of fresh cut fries in front of me, waiting to be devoured....and that's exactly what I did. YUM! The lady who took our order was patient and helpful once we told her it was our first visit and explained the menu and portion sizes. Basically a single or double patty, cheese if you like and then your choice of condiments; lettuce, onions, pickles, mayo, mustard, jalapenos, mushrooms, etc. The fries come either plain or cajun ( we went with plain) and one regular order is more than enough for 2 people. Our order was up fast on a very busy Sunday afternoon, the place was really clean and I'm glad we gave it a shot. We'll be back. read more

Ok, so people who've tried this place in the past say it's comparable to In-N-Out. Um..No it's not. One thing I have to say is that the burgers here ARE GOOD, however, they are nothing special. I've had better, although I'm not saying I wouldn't go here again- I'm just saying that I wouldn't make a special trip out to get one of these burgers. Service: The wait was long and there were only a few people ahead of us, although everyone seemed to be friendly. The place was kind of messy, and the coke machines were out of ice to which they knew about but didn't bother to change. All and all, it was ok. Definitely not the best. I grew up in the SF Valley and if you wanted a great burger you would go to IN N OUT burger. It's a hella to get yourself to try to change that habit after so many years of Double Doubles (then running over to the gym regretting the calories) However my BFF told me about this place near Ikea Carson that I should try. It even has a gym nearby just in case I regret eating a burger. I ordered one of the burgers on the menu and asked for grilled onions (and double the onions because I don't care who smells my breath) and it came relatively quickly. The guys taking orders are really into their jobs it seems since they holler and hoot like dudes in a high school boys locker room. My burger came in very ugly looking foil wrapping (you can get away with this if your parents packed this for you and you were a grade school student) I can't stand the way it looked but you can't judge by looks alone! I took that ugly wrapping off and went to town with the burger! It was moist and juicy and the patty didn't look like overprocessed garbage like they serve at Mc Ds. The grilled onions were not overdone and the bread wasn't too overwhelming. I spent about $7 with a drink which is slightly more than the Double Double. From my understanding Five Guys is from back east and being very aggressive by taking on In N Out here in California. I think they should first lower the prices and use a different wrapping for their burgers. One thing this place does have that In N Out doesn't are the free peanuts. There is a lot going on in this burger and I'm not sure it all went well together. The default toppings come with your standard lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, mayonnaise, processed cheese, and not one, but TWO meat patties. In addition it also comes with mushrooms and grilled onions! I may have missed a few things, but you get the idea. First of all, I love cheese probably more than anything. With that said, there was just too much of it. I can't believe I'm saying this! I probably should try the smaller option next time. Or the hot dog, because my friend ordered it and it looked so good! Maybe I also didn't enjoy my burger as much because the grass was greener on her hot dog. I'd like to give this place another try though. I've been on a burger spree and should probably take a break. Not a bad burger for the price. Not sure why we need to compare this place to in n out. Based on the size of the patty and the toppings, this place would be more appropriately compared to Fatburger, but I'm not doing that right now either only because its been a long time since I've been to fatburger. The variety of toppings are great and if you're not getting toppings then you're not getting value since they're already built into the price. I am a fan of the bbq sauce here and love the variety of veggies, i.e. green peppers, jalapenos and of course shrooms and onions. Fries on the side deserved to be split and the Cajun is really good. Lately, I've been loading up on too many of the free peanuts, which is a nice touch too, to handle the fries on the side. Wow, I guess there really is a difference of burgers and fries between the east and the west coasts. Five Guys opened up earlier this week in the South Bay Galleria in Carson. It's exterior front door is located near the NW corner of the mall entrance. This is an East Coast franchise and all they do are burgers, dogs, fries and soft drinks. Other than a grilled cheese or grilled veggie sandwich, that's it. There are signs all over the inside of the space touting all the awards they have won for food value and overall quality. Even Zagat has rated them for the past 8 years, something weird for a burger joint. More on that later. The decor motif is white with red and black accents. It's kind of like being inside an In-n-Out, except it's a bit more chaotic. I was there today at 12:45 pm and the place was packed with inside and outside tables full of people. The kitchen is very open and exposed to the service counter. I always like a place that's not afraid to show their staff preparing your food (note to Sizzler). I scanned the simple and uncomplicated menu, and decided I was going to try each of their basics; Bacon Cheeseburger "all the way"; Kosher Hot Dog with mustard, onions and relish; small order of fries and large drink (self serve). In ordering the bacon cheeseburger "all the way", it came with mayo, lettuce, pickles, tomatoes, grilled onions, grilled mushrooms, ketchup and mustard. I also asked them to add BBQ sauce to sweeten it up slightly. Other toppings available on request are jalapeno peppers, green peppers, A-1 Sauce and hot sauce (Tabasco I think I saw). All toppings are free. After about a 10 minute wait, my "#12" number was called. I found me a nice clean metal table and chair with a umbrella to sit under - hey, it was a really nice day outside. Besides, the cajun seasoning they use was all in the air inside - my eyes were irritated. First I checked out the burger. Unwrapping it from it's foil covered hockey puck-like profile, I find a neatly stacked and dripping burger about 5 inches across and 5 inches high. The meat patty was VERY fresh and cooked well, but still juicy to eat. They don't tray food to stay like others places, so everything is packed to go - it doesn't matter if you are eating in or not. The dog was of good size. They split it on the grill before cooking it. It was a tasty dog with the usual condiments. Other than that, the hot dog was rather un-remarkable and forgettable. I think Mustard's Chicago Dogs over on Atlantic and Wardlow are better in comparison. The fries were a bit of a challenge. Their signage says they use 100% peanut oil (plus they serve roasted peanuts to shell/eat while you wait for your order). With a place as busy as they were today, I would have thought they could have served hot and fresh fries that were not warm, limp and overly salty. When I say overly salty, I mean they were so salty that my tongue was raw after eating only half the small order - I ended up tossing the rest. Never have I consumed so much soda after a burger meal to soothe the soreness in my mouth. I think that if the oil was at proper temperature and the fries were cooked longer, the limp factor can easily be solved. Maybe I got served an overly seasoned batch made by an equally overly eager employee who was trying to make the employee cut. I will not hold this initial experience against Five Guys unless It happens again. (UPDATE: MAY 30 - fries much better this afternoon - crisp and not overly salted). As I mentioned earlier, they seemed to have received a lot of awards for the quality of their food, including their fries. Since this chain is most prominent from Delaware to DC to South Carlioina, I would have to assume that the patrons of Five Guys Burgers and Fries on that side of the US don't have real quality burger joints to compare Five Guys with. Concerning their awards and top ratings for food value; in DC it would be normal to pay $10 for a similar burger at a restaurant. But the 5.49 for the burger, 2.39 for the fries and 1.89 for a soda (plus 8.25% tax) really isn't a great value when comparing to other burger joints in LA and the OC. For Zagat to give this chain a top rating really makes me think twice about their rating system. They also have a smaller burger on the menu they call "Little" that starts at 3.09. I would guess their hand formed meat patties come in a 6 ounce size with the little being a single and the "regular" being a doub. Only 1 size of dog though. Five Guys Burgers and Fries is pretty good and different for the region, but definitely not the best in SoCal - especially for the price. They are open 7 days, 11am to 10pm. I first tried Five Guys Burgers in Washington DC in May. Everyone in DC claimed it was way better than In -N-Out Burgers...so of course, I was skeptic. In DC, I ordered the small cheeseburger with the following toppings: mushrooms, grilled onions, tomatoes, lettuce, jalapenos, and hot sauce. When I ate it, I immediately did not like the bun. It felt too heavy...starchy. I like my buns to be on the soft and flaky side. The meat did not have much flavor. I thought maybe I didn't like it as much was because it was a take-out burger which meant that it cooled down and it was not eaten right away. So when I heard that there was one in Carson, CA, I stopped by and ordered a cheeseburger with all the same toppings to go. This time I liked it much better than the last time. I'm not sure if it was because I was starving or I was just excited that there was now one in Carson. Hmm... Price: about $5-$6...with all the toppings you want. I finally had a reason to go to Ikea, which gave me an excuse to check out Five Guys. I've been hearing the hype for over a year now so I was very excited to try their burger. My stand on burgers is that if they aren't horrible, I'm going to like them. I stopped trying to compare burgers against each other a long time ago. So all the people who say Five Guys is better than In-N-Out might be right but I'm not getting into that. Let's just say I'm from LA. I ordered the cheeseburger with mayo, ketchup, mustard, relish, grilled onions, lettuce and pickles and a side of fries. Everything was fresh and the beef was very tasty. I'm not sure if I ordered too many toppings but I didn't even notice the relish or grilled onions. The cheese stood out though - they use a lot, which in my book, is very good. The bun was nice and soft and the fries were awesome. That's saying a lot considering I'm not generally a fan of any french fries. Overall, a solid burger and the free peanuts are a nice touch. Hopefully, they open one of these on the Westside because the trek to Carson ain't happening just for Five Guys. I can get a very similar burger next to my office at The Habit Burger Grill in El Segundo. But I do look forward to my next trip to Ikea! read more

Came in during the week at lunchtime and was slow with a short line. Friendly customer service that answered all my questions with a smile! Ordered a Cheeseburger (2 patties), regular fries, and a shake with Oreo bits. Everything was made to order and tasted fresh. Only setback was the price ($18!). I love that you get unlimited toppings (pile on those jalapenos baby!) and 2 thick and juicy patties of yummy meat and cheese? OH YES PLEASE. I think the meat is what makes these burgers so DELISH. Ignore the fact that its name somehow reminds of that viral video that was going around the Internet a few months ago that involved 3 less people of the opposite sex and a cup... Ignore the fact that its logos and and the name seem a little generic, and its red and white tile remind you of in and out. Also ignore the fact that it is located on the outside of the "South Bay Pavilion" but still connected. Five Guys Burger and Fries is sometimes referred to as the "IN and OUT" of the east coast. I never really liked IN and OUT so I decided to try this place anyways. It may cost a few extra dollars, but the portions of fries is a larger then what you would expect from a not so fast food joint. And the fries have a different taste to them. Its that one off taste that you don't really know what it is but you don't really care....and the burgers, well done, but soft and juicy. Along for the journey, I brought along 3 other guys. Four guys went to Five Guys burger and fries... Of these guys two are In and Out fans and the other two, myself and another we might of missed In and Out, but we could live with out it.... All four of us said Yes it is better then In and Out. To be honest, besides the color scheme and the simplified menus of the same color, there really isn't much similar with In and Out... The burgers are great, its a cross between an expensive burger and a Good home cooked backyard burger. The meat patties are never frozen, and they aren't Angus type meat, but overwhelmingly they have that juicy Angus taste almost of a medium rare burger although they are well cooked all the way through. The give you the choice of sauces and toppings ranging from jalapenos, to a-1 sauce, to BBQ sauce, to grilled onions, mushrooms etc. Almost a full serve Fuddrucker experience. The Fries are awesome to, again fried in peanut oil, it makes a subtle difference that is just plain good. In and Out or Five Guys - I'd rather go to Five Guys and spend a few extra bucks. Plus I don't think people have caught on this place yet..so no skateboarders or racers or weird people asking you to join their cult or church or whatever... Oh yeah and to top it off the manager and other people in the place were coming out to ask us if we needed anything or if everything was good every 10 mins or so... Excellent must try... read more

Been to this location a few times, but I have to say... Five Guys is starting to grow on me. Upon my initial visit, I had ordered a Little Hamburger (all the way) and fries but was not blown away at all. The hamburger was haphazardly put together and the fries so greasy that the oil was seeping through the brown bag. Then, it was the prices. Quite high for a hamburger at a fast food joint. I just could not wrap my head around why Five Guys was so popular. Next visit, my friend and I ordered online because we were going to be short on time before the soccer match at the StubHub Center so figured it would be smoother sailing to have the order ready for pick-up. The online order process was quite streamlined and though we chose to pick up our orders at 3:45 pm, they were ready about 5 minutes later, which we didn't mind because we would rather wait for it to be ready than for it to be ready and soggy awhile waiting for us. The taste of this little hamburger (all the way), totally blew away our taste buds. It was not haphazardly put together and the flavors and freshness of everything made for one tasty burger, which justified the prices. We also grabbed some peanuts to go, put some into our to go bag. The indoor seating is a bit odd here but it's due to the sun shining right through the double doors. We had that experience the first time around and it wasn't that pleasant but I guess they finally moved the tables out of the way. I think adding some tinted windows might help better than to have barely any seating right in the middle of the restaurant. The only huge gripe about this location is the parking! We came here on a Sunday afternoon but still had the hardest time trying to find a parking spot. This mall must be the place for everyone in Carson and the surrounding areas. I have a buddy who was raving about the quality of Five Guys Burgers, so we all took a field trip out to Carson. I'm on the fence about these burgers. Yeah they are huge and yeah you can get a bunch of toppings but they seemed slapped together. And the overall appearance wasn't super appealing. Maybe I should cut the workers some slack since it was only the second day the place was open. The burger didn't have a fresh or crisp taste like an In-N-Out burger and the buns were soggy Now, I'm a SoCal kid, so its going to be In-N-Out for life and I had to figure out when I would actually go to Five Guys. Maybe if I was out at Ikea, but I don't think I would make the drive just for the burger. Don't get me wrong. Kept getting looks from staff and others at me and my girl. Like y'all haven't seen an interracial couple before. Other than that I spent $30 on 2 burgers and 3 things of fries. Yeah, I had my doubts of this place because the hype is rarely ever real. I was right. I only came because my girl liked the fries. I'll throw down money on food but it needs to be worth it. Won't be going here again. Not because of the over rated prices for the aite food or the menu that really isn't descriptive as it should be. And that the girl at the front doesn't want to explain anything... etc etc. Nooo it's just ridiculously unsanitary in there. There wasn't a rush and there was more than enough staff. I love 5 guys! It's fresh, it's clean, they play old school rock and roll, and their fries are served in epic proportions (with optional malt vinegar). I definitely hit this place up for lunch every time I am in town. Minus one star for being just a bit over-priced. read more

Came here after a disappointing Ikea run. I have to say I didn't bother to eat at this place in NYC because it just looked like another one of those greasy burger joints, and it pretty much is, with a twist. Add toppings such as green peppers, grilled mushrooms, and A-1 sauce, and you will have one unique burger. The taste, on the other hand will be subjective. I thought the burger patty was pretty tasty, the free peanuts super salty, and the cajun fries greasy. Oh 5 Guys.. I was hoping to be completely and entirely wowed by you. However, I honestly felt underwhelmed after eating there. Let me clarify... The burgers here are definitely good (hence the 4-stars). However, I found myself comparing to what I feel is the Southern California standard for burgers (In-N-Out), and in my humble opinion, I think that In-N-Out is just more flavorful, fresher and juicier. Returning back to South Bay Pavilion (aka Carson Mall) already brought back some nightmarish moments involving Chuck E Cheese, bad pizza, and nearly arrested...and I was only 12. Noteworthy: non-perfect circular disc patties = homemade feel lots of toppings = more options/choices = better taste! affordable pricing fresh ingredients Fries, def get the cajun, but even then it falls short to Rally's fries. *if you order the veggie or GC sandwich, make sure to include toppings (at no extra cost). I was told the bread was a little more greasy than they were hoping for, and the taste was lacking since it was just cheese and bread, so remember to add toppings. The checkered white and red throughout the place was very similar to rally's and in-n-out which isn't bad. We ate outside under an umbrella and ultimately had a good lunch.
