For anyone new to the DC area from California, 5 Guys is our version of In-N-Out burger, only no killer milkshakes here. Even so, if you're looking for a really good burger in the DC area, then you need to seek out a 5 Guys. The menu is very simple. Burgers. Fries. Soda. The fries are made fresh from real potatoes, and they even post a sign in the restaurant telling you where the potatoes came from. This is the type of place where you place your order at the counter and they'll call your number to come get your food when it's ready. No booths, only 4-top tables. Expect it to be crowded at lunchtime any given day of the week. 5 Guys is actually a family run place that has very strict controls on franchises. The family says exactly what order the ingredients have to be placed on the bun, how many pickles, what BRAND of pickles, how many times the cook is allowed to press down on the hamburger on the grill. "It's just as good as In-N-Out." That is what I have always heard when people refer to Five Guys. Additionally, the restaurant is covered in quotes of how amazing their food is...good way to raise expectations even more. That comparison and all the quotes on the walls unfortunately heightened my expectations so high I was expecting quite a culinary treat, unfortunately I left pretty disappointed. First let me make it clear, the food at Five Guys is not horrible and in fact it a pretty good burger. My disappointment stems mostly from the fact I didn't find anything about the burger to be outstanding. The taste honestly was similar to burgers I make on my grill back home. Something that bothered me as I ate my meal was the amount of grease that came from my burger as I ate it. In the end there was probably 1 tbsp of grease in my foil....disgusting. To think of the grease that didn't escape the meat and ended up in my body is enough to make me sick. Now the fries. Wow do they really give you a lot! The smaller size is enough for two people. The fries are made in peanut oil which you can taste and gives them a unique flavor that is pretty good. I however was disappointed that the fries were severely undercooked. These fries would be incredible if they were more crispy. I also was disappointed in the price. With a burger, fries, and a drink you are pushing $10. Not good value to me since the food wasn't anything that great. Foster's Grille is better IMO...but its still no In-N-Out. read more

I love Five Guys! Since I moved to Virginia over a year ago I have been to this location dozens of times, and I have been quite satisfied every time. The burgers are cooked perfectly every time, and all the ingredients are incredibly fresh and delicious. The fries are cut up on location by the staff, and also cooked expertly. I always get the bacon burger with jalapenos, and a side of regular fries (I like the cajun fries, but they're a little spicy for my wife). If you've never been to Five Guys, and you like burgers, then you're missing out. Go there, now! Go, go, go! read more

Got my name wrong, has the schmuck on his face when he give me my order as the same time saying my name wrong. Ordered a hot dog and a milkshake. When my order arrived, the hotdog was placed on a soggy hamburger bun and the milkshake was completed melted. I called Five Guys and they told me it is because they did not have anymore hot dog buns. I asked them why I didn't receive a call or why they didn't decline the order since they didn't have the proper items and they told me they couldn't. read more

The burgers are super greasy, bring a towel to wipe yourself off (even if its just your hands). The fries are horrid, super greasy, super nasty. The only thing I liked was the SIZE of the burger. Other than that, I'd rather go to Red Robin (YUMMMMM). read more

Clean, simple and pretty quick. If you're taking a friend, order only one fry...you get enough to make up two orders. :) Burgers come two patties per burger...no you didn't get your order wrong...that's the Five Guys way. This place is great if you need to boost your cholesterol level and are craving a large bag of grease. Lord have mercy...I went with my kid a while back for carry out. I told him to put the bag-o-fries on the car floor but of course he didn't listen. When we got home his jeans were soaked in grease. Yea yea, the food taste alright. I originally come from Southern Cal, little known as the Burger Capital (no, really - McDonalds started there and some major burger places exist there) and so I'm very picky about my burgers. So in the end, Five Guys ends up in the middle. Not legendary, but nowhere near as bad as the mass-produced places. The food is plentiful but greasy; the dining place is plain. A nice touch is the peanut "appetizers"; the company should go with that and come up with some interesting angles. All in all, a nice place to stop by if you want to skip the burger factories. read more

The burgers are seriously good. Coming from California, they were like a mish-mash of In-and-Out and Fatburger. All in all a great burger. They are a bit pricy for burgers, but you get all free toppings and the regular burgers are two patties so that justifies the price. This place has ridiculous wait times for your food. At today's visit, they all seemed busy working but a long wait again. My past few visits, only female workers who couldn't possibly work slower! They actually appeared to deliberately work slowly! Also, in the past visits, there was no acknowledgement that I was there for them to take my order for awhile. I am dazed and confused by the mob mentality that has gripped the Washington DC metro area since this place came on the scene 25 years ago. This review pertains to all Five Guys not just this one in Ashburn. (I guess the one good thing that can be said is that from a corporate standpoint all their stores operate identically...identically bad). If you like your hamburgers pulverized and left on a grill until there is no juice or flavor left in them then this is your place. Here is a test. Go into any Five Guys and order a burger medium. I have done this at least ten times over the years at different stores. What you get is a look of bewilderment from the cashier who says they are "not allowed" to cook anything but well done. Now, if you have an extra few bucks go to Capital Grille or other high end steak house that for lunch serves burgers. Ask for it medium. Waiter's reply: "Sure." So either these very high end restaurants are risking your life and their business by cooking a burger medium OR they realize the panic over cooked meat is ridiculous OR the quality of meat used by Five Guys is so bad (risky) that as a chain they realize they must electrocute it before serving you. And its not just that the burgers are well done, its that the grill man has to take the spatula and press all of his body weight down onto the burger at least three times making sure there is no taste left. For those who rate this the #1 burger I dare say you are: (1) caught up in the mob mentality (everyone says its good so it must be; (2) you like condiments and extras and confuse the tasty combination of ketchup, pickles, onions, tomatoes with that of a good burger; (3) you've never tasted a good burger. By far one of the worst places to give an order, half of my toppings were not on the burger and was given plain fries instead of the Cajun style. When asked for Cajun one of the ladies just poured Cajun seasoning into my bag... very unprofessional overall. I work in the food industry and noticed that *THE WORKERS DON'T CHANGE THEIR GLOVES AFTER HANDLING THE MEAT* please retrain your staff members on FOOD safety. My daughter got sick eating from here a year ago, so I've always been very hesitant about going here until now. After seeing the workers not change their gloves, I will be taking my business to Fuddruckers across the road for my burger fix. read more

YUM. Don't even talk to me about burgers until you've eaten here. I can't even talk about it because I start to tear up. These burgers are made to order deliciousness! I normally get brave and get everything on my burger, but whatever you decide to go with, just know that it will be life changing. Oh and the fries? Yeah, fried in peanut oil, stuffed in a brown bag to the top - they give you enough to feed a class of pre-school kids. It's ridiculous. You have to eat here as soon as humanly possible! read more

I love the options of toppings at Five Guys. The fry portions are large enough for my boyfriend and I to share, although we had to go the cajun route because we needed a little more flavor. Add in the fact that it isn't nearly as busy as the one I was was used to in Seattle, and the coke free machines, I am definitely a fan of this location!! read more

I've eaten here several times. The employees are always friendly and cheerful. The place is always clean. The burgers are great! The wait time between ordering and receiving your food is a little longer than fast food because they make your meal to order. Tonight one of the employees was cleaning and stopped and asked me how my food was. Then when I went up to get a couple of napkins (you need a lot!) one of the guys behind the counter asked me if everything was OK. Potato sacks full of the raw product line the aisle to the counter at the Five Guys on Waxpool Road in Ashburn, a reminder that these fries are hand-cut, skins on. A helpful sign by the counter informs that todays potatoes are "from Sugar City, Idaho" (population 2,540 in 2007, according to city-data.com). Wherever they come from, Five Guys turns out french fry that meets all of my key criteria: hand-hewn, crispy golden (compliments of the peanut oil they're cooked in), and served hot. Maybe too hot - the styrofoam cup they're served in had some serious warping from the temperature. Five Guys fries come two ways, in two sizes. Five Guys style, which I opt for, are basic: cooked, salted. Cajun style dolls the fries up with cajun seasonings, if you want spice on top of your potato. It's worth noting that these are not a light food. If you seek french fries expecting the nutritional benefits of green beans, you get what you deserve. If you can feel the arteries hardening, you know these are fries served right. A regular order is more than enough for a stomach-filler. On my visit, the brown paper takeout bag had as many fries in the bottom of it as the cup holding my order - easily four servings of french fries total, and more than I could finish.
