Williamsburg does not have more than a couple of diners, so locals appreciate this one. The food is hearty, standard diner fair, so if you want that side of pancake with your turkey melt sandwich special lunch, you're in luck! There is nothing fancy about Five Forks and it is generally crowded and busy. The waitstaff are friendly enough, but they are not of the overly attentive variety some people expect (but I don't know how you could like it...) from eating at certain chain restaurants. The owners are opening a second restaurant in early August 2011 in Monticello Marketplace, and we were told when we visited a couple weeks ago that there would be minor changes at Five Forks like no more mashed potatoes and the dinner menu would move to the new restaurant. read more

When your conference doesn't start until 10am, you can get some real (not hotel) breakfast! We looked on here for recommendations and the Five Forks came up. We managed to hit the "early bird" special of 2 eggs, coffee, toast for under 4 bucks! We kind of gorged here a little. Wifey had eggs, toast w/ bacon I had eggs, toast but added hashbrowns and a side order of corn cakes. Over easy eggs were PERFECT! Believe the bread may be homemade, both the wheat and sour dough was good. Yes...it was a heavy starchy carby morning...so sue me! Everything was pretty darn good, but the corn cakes...OMG! Diner deliciousness at it's best. Good food, served fast at good prices. Booths, 80's tunes playing. The honey corn cakes, with or without syrup, we're awesome. This is my second visit to Williamsburg, second visit to this diner, it's been over 2 years since the last time I was here and the waitress greeted me "long time no see? " I remembered her from my past experience, but for her to remember a customer was surprising. When going to this place I would recommend trying the daily special. I had apple fritters with 2 eggs, and bacon. The apple fritters were full of apple and very good and the bacon was crispy. Like some of the other reviews, the coffee is ok, it would probably be better with filtered water, but they do have real half & half. If you want good coffee go to Starbucks, or another coffee house. My husband had biscuits and gravy and he was very happy with the soft biscuits, even tried a side of scrapple, not too bad. My last visit I had banana fosters French toast, it was equally good. We went during the week so it wasn't too busy. We were seated right away and the service was friendly and quick. I ordered the biscuits and gravy and, because of the rave reviews, had to order a side of corn cakes. I took off a star because the corn cakes were a little overdone. They were still delicious but I didn't much care for the hint of burnt flavor. Saw another table that looked like they kind of ordered the corn cakes as an appetizer and they looked straight up burnt and hardly touched. The biscuits and gravy were great. Coffee wasn't bad, but nothing amazing. Portions were huge. Looked like one pancake easily filled up a large plate too. Great little place! A little off our path (we we were driving to the OBX), but it was a nice stop. I got sausage gravy and biscuits, with eggs, side of bacon and cheese grits. The biscuits and gravy were absolutely phenomenal. They had a hint of sweetness (maple syrup) that just made me crave them more. The eggs were done perfectly (over-easy). The side of bacon for $3 was rather disappointing. Was like 4 strips of bacon, same with the cheese grits. They scooped some grits, threw some cheddar on it, added more grits, more cheddar. With all the local pancake houses & breakfast places to go to, it was pretty hard to pick a place to eat at. But my boyfriend said this was a pretty popular place so we decided to eat here. When you first walk in you get the usual diner feel. It was pretty crowded but we got seated quickly since it was just the two of us. I ordered the popular corn cakes with honey butter combo that included two eggs & a bacon. I substituted my bacon for a side of hash browns instead. My boyfriend got the corned beef hash combo that came with a side of two eggs & toast. The food came out pretty quickly which was nice because we were starving. The corn cakes were amazing especially with the honey butter! My hash browns weren't all that great though. It came out cold and didn't have a very appealing taste. Eggs were average. I had high expectations based on reviews. Coffee was bitter & bad taste. I ordered the corn cakes with bacon and eggs. The eggs were fresh. This is the cutest little place!! We ate breakfast here on our way home and let me tell you, we were very happy. I ordered the pancake breakfast - 1 pancake, 2 eggs with bacon and coffee. The pancake was huge and it was very good, the eggs were good, but the bacon - it looked like someone just put a handful of bacon on the plate with the eggs!! I was not expecting that - I was expecting two strips - but I got bacon that looked like it was cooked in my kitchen. It was so good!! Hubby ordered the sausage gravy biscuits with eggs and hash browns; and he enjoyed it. Our waitress was the nicest person - she was helpful and funny. We had very good service. This must be the place - it is small; but when we left, there were people outside waiting to get a table. Has an authentic diner ambiance. Staff was very friendly and welcoming even though it was busy. I would not say that the pancakes are as big as other posters seem to suggest. Nevertheless, they were filling and delicious. The corned beef hash complimented the sweetness of the chocolate chips that were *loaded* in my pancakes (which is a good thing). That was a ton of food for our money. I lived In the diner mecca (NJ/PA) for over 30 years. I've had good, bad, and meh diner food. This is definitely great diner food. The Corn Cakes were good (wife loved them, I thought they were simply flat round of corn bread), but the Chorizo & Egg Burrito was top notch. Think ranch-style eggs. A very good spot to kick your day off. The staff was friendly, the food was well prepared, and it's convenient to all the local attractions. My only comment (and its not even much of a complaint) is the juice is from concentrate. I don't expect fresh-squeezed in a place like this, but the old-fashioned syrup-and-water combo shouldn't be around anymore. Easily one of the best burgers I've ever had! The service was excellent, and the food was hot and fresh. I ordered the back cheeseburger and they informed me of the "buy one, get one half off" special they have on burgers. They have a couple specialty burgers to choose from as well. The seasoned fries were addicting and also some of the best I've had. After a long day on the road and visiting Jamestown, I was floored with the food and service at this spot. We tried lunch here after all the great Yelp reviews. I had the 2 corn-cakes, eggs, and bacon breakfast. My husband had the grilled cheese. Service was mediocre at best. Our waitress somewhat talked to us, but the only time she came to check on us after we got our food, was when she was giving us our bill. While my husband was finishing she actually sat down with what we were figuring were regulars, and completely ignored the rest of her tables. Thankfully someone else was manning the register. The food was ok. Pretty typical diner food. My eggs were fine (hard to screw up scrambled eggs), the bacon was cold and really really really crunchy. I like crispy bacon, but this was almost too hard to eat. The corn cakes were pretty good, but not enough to make me want to come back. Great little cozy diner, the Reuben had great taste! Would return again to try other items on the menu. The staff was friendly and very provided excellent service. We were consistently checked on by the staff. The diner reminded me of a Coney Island style restaurant that I am accustomed to from growing up in Michigan. Someone in our group got a BLT and the sandwich was a very large portion, I would probably consider trying that next time. The fries have a seasoning on them that adds some good flavor. Not sure what's hard to get about that but if you try my fave - The Breakfast Sandwich with lettuce tomato mayo, bacon, cheese and egg! - you will be a convert. I was driving by and saw this long waiting line so we figured we'd see just how good this place is. Final analysis: Ok place if you just have to do a spot and nothing better is around. We've been there two or three times for breakfast. Gets crowded. Uncomfortably crowded because the restaurant is small and hasn't expanded with its growing clientele. The food was as underwhelming as the 1992 decor. Not that we had super high expectations but still...... I've had their omletes, pancakes, scrambled eggs, oatmeal, and a few other items. Food was served pretty fast and tasted ok. The pricing was consistent with other restaurants of its calibre (bill for my family of 4 was around $35 dollars). Stopped by for breakfast today. I had the Big Ommelette and my wife had the 2 egg, and the corn cakes. We both tried the corn cakes and we didn't get the same kind of excitement that we see everyone else has experienced with them. Personally, I found them very greasy and not flavorful. I believed that they would be like a "corn bread pancake". I guess I'm picky about my corn bread so they didn't click with me. Now, everything ELSE was spectacular. Five Forks has been a mainstay for us for at least 15 years....and it never disappoints. Sherri and Shelli (the outfront staff) treated us as if we were long-distance relatives who had come home for a reunion. I can almost say that I have had everything on the menu, but the Gyro sandwich more than anything else....and it is ALWAYS delectable. I've had 'em from all the heavyweights in the genre, and this one pales ONLY to Greek on Cary as far as within a 50 mile radius from Hopewell. Mandy decided on a Bleu Cheese burger which was cooked too perfectly and looked like what the Thickburgers look like in the posters Hardee's hangs in their windows. The fry seasoning as an option is highly recommended, and was the perfect finishing touch to a perfect meal. Always a treat when you can get in, Five Forks will remain a favorite! read more
