All the way from America the Fitzpatrick Castle was a great stay! I stayed at the castle for 3 nights and enjoyed all of them. The breakfast in the mornings was always plenty to eat. I used the gym and it was better than most hotel gyms back home! The best part of my stay was the unique feel that I would not get by staying in any regular hotel in Dublin! I tried the restaurant downstairs and the wings were some of the best I've ever had! read more

Great castle hotel just outside the boundaries of Dublin on the coast. As a family of four - I appreciated the option of being able to book a two double bed room instead of two separate rooms. Yes the nearby town is small but it's a nice 30 minute walk to be rewarded by a pint of the black stuff! The dungeon bar was cool and my kids loved the suit of armor ! We had dinner in the adjacent restaurant (Mapas) and the steak was delicious !! We also tried the smoked salmon - which was drool worthy (but do order the bread to accompany it as it is SO rich). Yes other reviews are correct, the Castle doesn't have Air-conditioning in every room. I assure you this wasn't a major inconvenience or problem. The Killiney Castle circa 1847, was located in the small community 10 or 12 Miles outside of Dublin. The train station is in the beautiful little town of Killiney, a 10 minuet walk and all downhill, so convenient and inexpensive to commute into the city with lovely views of the coastal towns along the way. 6.50€ Roundtrip. We spent quite a bit of time with the locals of Killiney, wonderful people, restaurants, pharmacy, pubs, a grocery and it's a fishing village. The Pope will be visiting Killiney in two weeks, needless to say it's a safe, clean and predominately a Christian community. I also must mention the Killiney Hill, just a short walk up the hill from the castle, best views of Ireland, fresh air and there is a cafe at the bottom of the park. I must mention the staff at Fitzpatrick Castle, they couldn't have been more warm, hospitable and kind people. Other than the fire alarm going off after midnight on our last nights stay, we have nothing but complements. Even during the evacuation we met such interesting guests and it seemed like a social gathering rather that a possible life saving exercise. Thank you all at the Fitzpatrick Castle for making us feel so welcome. read more

This castle-like hotel was an exclusive Resort in the suburb of Dublin in Kilkenny. The only downside was that it was a mile from the town which was about as big as my arm. Many folks dared to take the walk, but a cab was a much better solution. From the hotel, I had a beautiful view of Dublin Bay. In the town I was treated with the Irish kindness and plenty of beers on tap. My favorite place to hang out at the hotel was the dungeon, which was a bar underneath the hotel. read more

This was my least favorite hotel out of all of them on our trip. POOR SERVICE! When we walked in we waited 20 minutes just to check in because only one person was at the desk and was taking forever with other clients. There was even someone there before us so who knows how long they waited. My mother went to get our bags and the doorman just watched as she struggled to come inside with two pieces of luggage and up stairs and through two doors. Overall it seemed like everyone that worked there was just a teenager and didn't know what they were doing or was on their phone. Our room smelled musty and so did the hallways and our room wasn't very nice. We did enjoy the balcony to get away from the smell. read more

Took my Mam here yesterday for Afternoon tea for her birthday. I was so disappointed. The last time I was at Kilinney Castle the decor was more traditional, much nicer. When we walked in we were greeted with a gaudy mocha carpet with huge black flowers #gaudy. The chaise longue was replaced by cheap looking dinning chairs and the overall look was tired. The service was slow except for one on-the-ball waiter who looked after us very well. When the afternoon tea arrived it was lovely but had gone down in quality since 2011 - I wonder has the management changed? It beats no resemblance in quality to the other Fitzpatrick hotels. I can only hope it gets a revamp soon and someone strips the awful purple and cream paint from the exterior! read more

Totally enjoyed my stay here this summer past! Spent one night. At check in the attendant mentioned I was booked in the original part of the castle and mentioned it is apparently haunted, asking if that would bother me, and if so I could be moved to the newer construct. I chose to remain in the original room. Perhaps a spirit dwelled there as my watch battery was drained overnight it was relatively new, and I have heard ghosts drain electrical energy. The room was extremely cozy and spacious enough. Ate dinner in the dungeon, had the Guinness stew, it was delicious, the beef was extremely tender and the meal priced fairly for a castle was filling. The general ambiance of the castle was quite nice, unfortunately did not get to completely enjoy it due to a late arrival and early departure, but what I did see and explore was satisfying If I am ever passing back through this area, I definitely would check in again! read more

This review is a long time in the making. But I remember my stay as if it was yesterday, and when I look at my photos, I remember everything. There are a lot of mixed reviews of this place, some love it and some think it's not up to par with a four star hotel. That I'm not sure of. We were there for a wedding that was held in the castle, so we stayed there for a few days. The castle was old obviously and a little weird. But overall it was a great experience. If you are looking for absolute opulence, this may not be your place, but what I found out about this hotel and what I really liked about it, It was not so much about the rooms, service, or food. It was about the experience, and the grounds and surrounding area. It was absolutely gorgeous. I hiked up to the Obelisk and the view was absolutely breathtaking. I hiked around the town a little and went to a couple of the bars. There are lots of quaint little shoppes, restaurants, and bars in the area. So much to explore and sample. I live in Chandler, Arizona and have lived in Scottsdale, So I have seen absolute opulence, We have plenty of four and five star hotels and restaurants here as well as the culinary institute. Since the castle is old, it may not stand up to some opulence standards, but I still thought it was nice enough and I was comfortable. When I travel i know that things are not going to be the same or work the same as where I live, so i can adapt. One thing that was strange about our room, is that there were three light switches in the hallway that operated all the lights, problem was, you had to have all of them on for any of them to work. Good thing I brought a high powered l.e.d. flashlight so I could use the loo and not wake up my partner with blinding light. Some things in the room worked, and some didn't, some had a learning curve. It took me a couple days to figure out how the shower really worked. But I just thought it was funny and laughed it off. Like I said the castle is old, but it has plenty of charm, that's for sure. There's the big circular staircase complete with suit of armor that you'd expect in a castle and lots and lots of cool paintings. While we were there, they were getting ready for New Years Eve. I did some drunken exploring (I did that a lot there) and was amazed at how many huge ballrooms there were. The service was generally pretty good. I know a lot of people complain about that on here, but we actually enjoyed the staff. We had a good time with them and talked about stuff like sports etc. They were pretty attentive since they knew we were there for a wedding with a large party and we do tip. Overall they gave us a great experience and kept our glasses full. I didn't try the exercise room since I'm lazy but I did try the pool and hot tub. they could use some renovation, but overall not horrible. They did an amazing job with the wedding and the food was great and the service was also. they made lots of extra treats for us later like sandwiches and snacks which was smart since we were all drinking and dancing after dinner. Everyone got hungry again after working off the dinner. I would say the dinner was up to the four star standard. There's like 4 bars there I think, my favorite was the dungeon, which felt a bit haunted and creepy to me. That made me like the castle even more. I didn't get a chance to try the restaurant there, but it looked very nice. All the bars had good food and drink, and they stay open late, so of course we had a great time! again if your looking for absolute opulence, maybe this place is not for you, but if you are looking for a great experience, go for it! As a restaurant, The Grill serves good food albeit at a steep price. When my wife and I ate dinner there there were a lot of kids which added to the noisy Irish atmosphere. it didn't bother us but it might put off some people. As a hotel I can't say I was too impressed. The room was OK, but they we're doing renovations on our floor and it was a little intrusive. We were put in 1 of only 4 rooms left open on that floor, it made me wonder why they didn't just shut the whole floor down. The water in the shower had 2 settings, Super Hot and Death, so that was a little annoying as well. Other than that the staff was really nice and very professional. We didn't do any complaining otherwise I'm sure we might have gotten some concessions. Regardless, I fail to see how this is rated a 4 star hotel. It's neat being in a castle and all, but we've been in several that have had conditions better than this that were rated the same or worse. I'd still recommend a stay here, just don't get overly excited when you do. read more

There is such a variety of hotel options with the area and this one definitely sets the standard I expect. From the moment you sit down in reception to be checked in, to wandering the expansive hotel you are impressed with the level and caliber of service. Many are quite young and it is impressive to find this here. The restaurants and bars on site are all quite remarkable. I tried each one and didn't find much that needed improvement, certainly not in the Mapas Restaurant. The room is quite nice, I would love be in a room with a view, perhaps next time. All the furniture and amenities you expect. And a real bath and shower, not the standard corner shower. Service of the rooms is excellent, they are clean and well maintained. There is an indoor pool, gym, grounds and trails, and of course fantastic views from nearly everywhere. I hesitate writing reviews like this, when there are no other real options, because it will make my return even more difficult. Congratulations to the management team and the owners. Old Europe chic, don't expert modern. Do expect oversized rooms with well appointed bathrooms. Service is very friendly and efficient. Ate in The Dungeon for a quick bite on first day in country -- small selection but good food and again good service. The Library on the main floor is a more well appointed bar and cozy atmosphere. 1. The beds are terrible, the mattress is so thin and uncomfortable and our whole group slept terribly. I know they are going for an oldfashioned look but everything seemed old and not well kept. 2. There is no water pressure, at first we were impressed by the cool looking rain showerhead but soon realized it was like standing in a drizzle of rain. 3. We had our most expensive dinner of the trip in the hotel restaurant and we were unimpressed. We'd been eating mainly pub food so we decided to go for something a little nicer: the deal was two courses for 21 euros and 10 euro cocktails. The food was just sort of okay and didn't feel worth it. We'd definitely had much better and less expensive meals on the trip. 4. This hotel is about 40 minutes from the airport and downtown dublin so expect to drive. If I were to go back and didn't want to pay to stay downtown I'd go for Howth, which we visited and was a great town. P.S. There is free wifi, parking, and a good breakfast but those didn't make up for the other things. read more

It's nice to feel like royalty...staying in a castle and all... This "castle," however, leaves a bit to be desired. First of all, this is not a castle. At least not anymore. Truly, this is a hotel, established in the 1970's, that hasn't been updated since. The interior is as you would expect given that information - worn carpet and outdated furnishings - with essentially the only improvements being made to common areas and the lobby. I would recommend staying here only if you want to be in and around the Dublin area but don't mind being about 20-30 minutes outside the city. It's not a bad drive to commute from Dublin to the castle location, but don't be fooled that this is in the city or really even close. If you don't have your own car or don't mind walking to and taking the DART (Dublin Area Rapid Transit) train, you'll be out of luck for getting downtown in any kind of cheap or efficient manner. **The wi-fi is free, however, requires an access code that you need to get from the concierge and must be renewed every 24 hours** read more

I like this hotel. Great parking. Lovely staff. Good afternoon tea. Sunday lunch in the P.J.'s restaurant is I think good value, you can choose from the buffet table for your starter and have as much as you like. Then you go on to the hot main course - again as much as you like. If you still have room you get to choose from the dessert table. I forgot to start with you get a glass of Bucks Fiz. Great outing for a family affair. Supper in the Dungeon is very good also I generally always have the lamb chops followed by ice-cream. Now eating ice-cream when you are out can be a little hit and miss as sometimes it is not stored very well and you end up with a texture that is a little off. Not in this case though and if you ask nicely they will give you a topping. Guess who likes ice-cream! The chips by the way are the nice thin ones. What else can I say? Comfortable surroundings. OR you can have the afternoon tea here which is also very good plenty for 2 people and then some - I am generally going out with a doggy back of uneaten cake or a scone. Of course not for the dog. So you can make it for the Angels exhibition have a meal go for a walk on Killiney Hill let the youngsters play on the big new playground then back to the Hotel for afternoon tea? Might be a bit expensive but it will be a good day out and you will be very well fed! read more

Was at a charity gig here last night in the ballroom. While I didn't stay there, the hotel is beautiful and in a beautiful location on a hill in Killiney. It's a 4*, but really has a 5* feel to it. I'm usually very sceptic of food at an event where 300 people are served at once, but the food was so tasty and the roast beef was pink. If I had been served it at a dinner that I booked myself I would have been a happy camper. There's also a really cool cellar bar called the 'Dungeon' where you can order bar type food and choose from a wide range of beers. Looking forward to returning and staying the night sometime. read more

We've had the opportunity to stay at several hotels throughout our Ireland trip; don't let their "5 Star Rating" fool you. We experienced poor service at the front desk, confusing layout throughout the hotel, and outdated amenities including a 15" TV from the 70s and patched wallpaper. The bed is decent and comfortable, but you definitely do not feel like you're staying in a castle from the outside or inside. We tried the Dungeon Bar and Restaurant and experienced some of the worst food we've had on the entire trip; pretty sure it was frozen dinner meals. read more

I never stayed in the hotel as it's local to me, but I'm there once a month for a network meeting in the business centre. Which is nice enough and usually very well heated. This time I met with a friend beforehand for a light dinner. We met at 6pm so by the time we wanted to order it was just after 6pm and we were told that the kitchen had closed at 6pm. All they could offer were sandwiches. This was slightly disappointing. The sandwich was nice enough but I would've loved to try their salad with goats cheese. The waiter seemed very new in the job but had a very nice attitude so you couldn't blame him for still learning (everybody has to start at some point). And he tried his best to offer and bring us food we liked. So. Lesson learned, next time I'll make sure to order before 6pm as the lounge is very nice to sit and chat - and enjoy some food. read more

Although myself and family have celebrated many events over the years, e.g. Communions, christenings, I was recently disappointed by the unprofessional staff members. While briefly popping in, the receptionists were completely incompetent. These are the people that all guests are greeted with first, and first impressions are lasting. An important letter was left behind the desk for us. We were led to believe this letter did not exist and was never handed in. This was without any double-checking with other staff members, she actually asked us were we sure we had our own name right?! In the end, we had to contact the person who left the letter, who then had to physically help her look through a couple of letters. The letter was in a different place by the other equally-incompetent staff member. No apology for wasting our time, not to mention the guest's time. Absolute embarrassment to Irish hospitality everywhere! read more

This place is great, being a member of their gym and pool is glorious, good opening hours and nothing better than a nice steam in the steam room. Often go here for some afternoon tea too and they have a very good function room as well. Havnt had a dinner here in a few years however and have also not stayed here as a hotel guest any time recently but having the aircoach leave from right outside the front door must be a plus. The menue appears to be freshly prepared in the hotel. Its possible sit over a large pot of coffee undisturbed for ages. My family have had many events arranged there. Whether this is a castle, others can tell you better than I. But a four-star hotel it is not. The pretense and price are not backed up by quality. The grounds are reasonably nice and well kept. The fitness area is good for the basics. The pool is nice, though it'd be nice if it were a bit more relaxed--all of the pestering signs about wearing your swim cap kinda put a damper on things a bit. The layout of the hotel is confusing, the lifts work about half the time. The room was a good size. The decor was a bit shabby and the wallpaper was peeling and falling apart, but the bed was comfortable and the amenities worked well.I wish the lounge had more space just to relax and hang out. The bar was decent. I tried to have tea/lunch service in the lounge a few times. The service was insanely terrible--slow, disorganized, confused, and generally inept. It's a good idea but they haven't yet figured out how to run it. Skip the breakfast -- the one in the room is quite mediocre and the one in the restaurant is overpriced. The Dalkey area is quiet but cute and charming, and you can find some great little breakfast nooks in town (the Corner Note Café is nice). Overall, this is a 2.5-star hotel at a 4-star price. Next time I would probably find somewhere a bit more modest and perhaps closer to Dublin city center. read more

The hotel was okay. I was here for 3 weeks on business. The people who worked here are nice enough but don't really go out of their way to provide exceptional service. The place is a little old but has had good upkeep. The gym and pool are nice but could use better hours. There are a few places to eat on the premise, but they're all pretty average. The hours also kind of suck. I'd get back from work and the restaurants were already closed and room service ends early too. My hot water went out once and I had to ask a few times for them to fix it. They never really got it back to full heat. There are no refrigerators in the rooms. But if you ask at the front they have a couple of dorm room refrigerators they will loan you. My biggest issue is that I was in a nonsmoking room on a non smoking floor. But other guests smoked on their balconies around me which constantly got into my room. It was pretty gross. All in all, it's an okay hotel. I personally wouldn't stay there again, but it's better than a lot of places. read more

Pros: The staff was top notch. They were helpful and kind even when busy with parties (confirmations/baptisms are big and they host a lot of these events). Cons: The rooms are in the process of being upgraded, so, once this is complete, it will be a big plus for the hotel. Location: The hotel is located on top of a hill and is a short walk to the center of town where there are wonderful eateries and bars. The hotel was a great experience. My husband and I were in Ireland for our honeymoon and found the whole hotel an intimate experience. We had asked for a quite room and they but us at the very end of the hallway in the corner. They also upgraded our room for free. All of the staff was wonderful and very nice. The level of helpfulness of the staff was one of the shining stars of the place. The room could use an upgrade decor wise but the bathroom had been redone and was beautiful. The room was also very roomy and intimate. We were worried about the bed size since European beds and American beds are different but they but us in a big, comfy bed (my husband is 6' 2" and we need the space). We had a nice view of the sea and Dalkey Island from our room. Though we only ate breakfast once at the hotel (it was okay), we tried their other eating options and enjoyed each one. The bars and bar staff are wonderful and, during our last night, they had a piano player so we were able to enjoy some dancing. The walk from the hotel to Dalkey and the Dalkey train station is about 10/15 minutes. The hotel is on a hill, so it is something to take into account when looking at walking to and from the hotel. But to be honest, with the type of eating and drinking we were doing on our trip, all the walking made if feel like we were earning each bite and sip. read more

Out of a five hotel 10 day trip this place was the most disappointing.I was looking forward to our 10th Anniversary in a castle so imagine my dismay when we pulled up to see a big old house with Crenelations added to the top..Throwing up some Crenelations on top of a Building doesn't make it a Castle.. The room was average and very small. on the plus side the staff were very nice and accommodating. We purchased a couple of Bus passes for the next day in Dublin..we were at such a breakneck pace that we didn't even use them. The front desk person refunded our money at the end of the day no questions asked..so Kudos for that. The food in the Dungeon Restaurant was good as were the drinks if a bit overpriced. All in all it was a pleasant stay though..if you are looking to stay in a castle just keep in mind that it isn't. ;) # read more

Needs serious upgrade. Not a castle hotel experience. Only have 5 or 6 rooms in the castle section. If you are looking for a castle experience this is not the place to go. When we stayed many unruly children running throughout. Staff did not address this situation. Unable to enjoy either of the main sitting areas due to children being rambunctious. The only reason we gave 2 stars was the food. The Dungeon restaurant was excellent and wait staff was friendly and attentive. Also morning breakfast was very good. If you are in the area just go to the restaurant, but pass on staying in the hotel. read more

Excellent hotel. Stayed in a family suite with three small children, there was plenty of space for the kids to play with small toys on the ground. The price was very affordable. The on site restaurant is also amazing, the food was very well priced and the staff was accommodating. One of the best meals I've had in Europe, the chef even checked up to ensure the food was to our satisfaction. There is a park about 10 minutes away that has swings, zip line, and a slide. Also in the park there is an amazing view of the city and surrounding country side. It took around 20 Minutes to get to downtown Dublin, which was very easy to drive in and spend the day. If you are looking for a affordable hotel with amazing customer service I would highly recommend staying here. read more

Absolutely charming. Reminds me of the Stanley Hotel. The clientele is as charming as the building itself. Very large rooms. No fridge or microwave though. And you have to insert your room key into a slot by the door to make the lights work! Indoor heated pool. Would definitely return here. read more
