The rehab staff at both sites are exemplary, the pools, not so much. The pool in Salinas has been out of commission for close to a year (as of 4/26), so those of us that rely on aqua therapy have been left behind. When dealing with staff there was very little assistance offered, but quite a bit of attitude. Since it's covered by our insurance, unlike other gyms in town, we'll probably just wait until it's repaired, since no one offered us the possibility of just going to Marina.

When I am placed in these situations, I will say dumb, stupid things & lose my temper. May have cursed but never cursed at anyone & when you told several different things & sometimes, they had bad days & said things uncool. My overall experience their went from fun times to being felt judged & nitpicked at. When I was out of shape & skinny things seemed fine but once I started to get in better shape & wanted my support for my aging body as a man....I'm told im wrong for this? Why is it anytime my life starts to get better that someone ruins it other than myself crashing & burning. So little support or encouragement. Overall, they did not provide me with the recovery to driving again....I SHOULD BE DRIVING AGAIN but physically UNABLE & was in this program for years. They just eventually tell you dont come back for some time & I regret going back. They don't even have a good gym culture, and they WERE SO FRIENDLY & misleading & then out of nowhere super strict. They left me feeling confused & upset many times over the years. They did not care about my mental health or overall goal to drive! Honesty wasted my time making friends that turned around to ruin my life like so many do. Learn to treat people with known mental health issues better & dont have a therapist pretend to be their friend just to get uncomfortable with things they said. Honestly, I should of never opened up with anyone that was not a Dr. for mental health. That was my biggest mistake.

I have never felt stronger in my life and I've lost 16 pounds since working with him (and tracking my calories) He is also very affordable compared to trainers around the peninsula. The gym is small but has everything I need. There are never more than 4 other people in there at a time which is a big plus for me! At this point, I do feel I have learned enough about weight training to not need a trainer, but I don't think I would push myself as hard if Tom weren't there saying "one more" over and over again. Love training here and I'm so excited to see how much stronger I will become!

The place has all the equipment I need (I mostly train with free weights) to work out hard. Tom, the owner is an excellent trainer with lots of knowledge to share. Cons: The location is somewhat hidden, the cost is higher than other gyms, no crowds (if you are into people watching), no showers. I am just a BIG fan of this place. The cost is a little high, but that just means that only people serious about working out go there. I would give this place a 4.5, but since that is not an option I will round up to a 5. In case you are wondering the -.5 would be for the bathrooms not having any shower stalls. Update (11-17-2009)** I stand by what I said before, I really liked working out here, but I was just on the receiving end of a 4 letter word laden tirade from the owner because I turned the tv off. This is something I was given permission to do, but the owner feels that pressing the power button on the tv "broke everything". I follow all the rules, re-racked my weights, wiped down when I was done, etc. I was a model member so it was completely out of the blue for him to call my house to cuss me out. So it's a great place to work out, just be aware you could be on the receiving end of a tongue lashing. It's up to you if you want to stick around after that, I for one am not.

I am injury prone and rehabilitating. I was very intimidated by a cross fit environment, but Frank told me that it's like family here and very supportive and he would have the instructor scale me so I don't keep hurting myself. God helped me 6yrs ago to go plant based so the journey of losing 40lb and rehabilitating old and new injuries prior and during Army NG life has been rough. God found me this place to take me to the next level of rehab. I am not a very competitive person yet even with myself. I just want to not feel injured anymore, I'll take sorness over injuries any day. I used up my 5 free sessions today and I pray to sign up Monday with my husband of 10 yrs. Frank says a couple who does crossfit together stays together. In our case God first and then crossfit. I was so thankful that a Christian memeber who was former Army started a conversation with me today about a plant based diet and we exchanged some helpful info then he prayed for me on the spot regarding my husband hopefully joining with me. His wife comes too and I can't wait to meet her. He has back problems like me, we were able to relate in so many ways. I feel so blessed that First City provided the right environment for us to make this connection possible. Another women I worked out today with was so wonderful and she kicked bum and she started talking to me about her being prior service as well. I loved it so much because God new my comfort zone, who to meet and where to start. Kyle, the instructor. Where do I start.. Kyle is out of this world amazing. He put up with me for 3 days straight. I went to 5 of his classes in 3 days, lol. He made sure I knew what I was doing and made sure I was comfortable. He even wrote up my own special work out so I wouldn't be doing the same thing over again. I was blown away that he was prepared for me the 2nd day with a new routine. I love his black lab child Kila who we get to run with on our 400mm. I pray this place will get me to rehabilitated completely so I can stop thinking of my injuries completley. If you go to the same class time every day you will do something diff every day for sure. I was just gunho about it because I'm 33 and I'm tired of wasting time. I have the luxury of going twice a day since the Lord had my quit a full time job. Now I just have to be mission ready for whenthe military calls. I have a feeling First City fitness will get me there. I have a PT test i. Oct and I am so close to getting 300. I have a few ambitious goals but I am taking slw because even if I do y reach those goals I know I will be better off then when I started regardless. -I never have to worry about water they have delicious state of the art coconut filtered water machine that pre measures your water. -checking in is easy, with a barcode on my phone -the cleaning product is from Seventh Generation, eco friendly cleaning spray, love it. -lots of quality fiber neon colored cleaning towels. -Child care available in the morning. The instructor I met in the morning had her 2 children at work with her. She was so pleasant and wonderful to talk to. She answered my questions when I first came in. She made me feel so at ease. She used to work at Monterey Fitness. She said this place jist worked out better for her and her fam. She is incharge of the run group on Sat. I won't be going since I have Sabbath, but it sounds like a great way to challenge ones self since they are getting ready for a half marathon at Big Sur. In the special room: -library of educational fitness books -protein products drinks and so forth -spiralizer available for lending out -First City Fitness apparel water bottles glass -other things I migh have missed:( This place does cost more then other crossfit, but it's worth every penny. 135 for military is a bargin, I'll take it but I would pay full price happily if I wasn't military. I would say this gym has many services to offer: -Free weights -Cardio machines (elliptical, bike, treadmill, stairs) -Cable weight machines -Multipurpose room (spin, aerobics, pads) -Basketball court -Sauna/Showers -towel service (small towels) -fitness rentals (bikes and such) The capacity is smaller though if you compare it to the clientele and it can get very crowded during peak times (lunch, morning, and right after classes). They have long hours though, so you should be able to find a time to work in a routine. I haven't tried any of the classes or programs yet, but they do have several. Staff are friendly and there are normal gym etiquette things you deal with the other customers (people super setting, not wiping down sweat off equipment, etc).
