Let me start by saying that I am not a gym rat. Having had experiences at both Marina and Salinas I…read morewill say that mostly the equipment is newish and in working order. The rehab staff at both sites are exemplary, the pools, not so much. The pool in Salinas has been out of commission for close to a year (as of 4/26), so those of us that rely on aqua therapy have been left behind. When dealing with staff there was very little assistance offered, but quite a bit of attitude. Since it's covered by our insurance, unlike other gyms in town, we'll probably just wait until it's repaired, since no one offered us the possibility of just going to Marina.

She would record me when THEY KNEW I HAD MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES but proceeded to treat me indifferent & uncomfortable. When I am placed in these situations, I will say dumb, stupid things & lose my temper. May have cursed but never cursed at anyone & when you told several different things & sometimes, they had bad days & said things uncool. My overall experience their went from fun times to being felt judged & nitpicked at. When I was out of shape & skinny things seemed fine but once I started to get in better shape & wanted my support for my aging body as a man....I'm told im wrong for this? Why is it anytime my life starts to get better that someone ruins it other than myself crashing & burning. So little support or encouragement. Overall, they did not provide me with the recovery to driving again....I SHOULD BE DRIVING AGAIN but physically UNABLE & was in this program for years. They just eventually tell you dont come back for some time & I regret going back. They don't even have a good gym culture, and they WERE SO FRIENDLY & misleading & then out of nowhere super strict. They left me feeling confused & upset many times over the years. They did not care about my mental health or overall goal to drive! Honesty wasted my time making friends that turned around to ruin my life like so many do. Learn to treat people with known mental health issues better & dont have a therapist pretend to be their friend just to get uncomfortable with things they said. Honestly, I should of never opened up with anyone that was not a Dr. for mental health. That was my biggest mistake.

Customers/athletes always helpful and mindful of others (no judgment, just folks going about their business). Drop in rate is more than fair (paid way more in San Francisco and only needed the neglected power rack in the back of a globo gym, OMR is a god send). Hoping my next stop has a facility and owner just like this one!

Very disappointing customer service from management, especially considering we pay additional…read moremembership fees for our children to use the childcare and swimming amenities. Childcare is frequently "at capacity," but parents receive no notification through the In-Shape app. You can pack up your kids, drive all the way there, and then be turned away, which means there goes your workout. For working parents, this is extremely frustrating. It would be very helpful if In-Shape sent an app notification when childcare reaches capacity or brought back the option to reserve childcare through the app, similar to how it worked during COVID. At least parents could plan accordingly instead of wasting a trip. Today, Labor Day, was another example of poor communication. Family swim is normally 5-8 PM Monday-Friday. Since the gym was closing at 6 PM, I planned to bring my kids from about 5-5:30 PM. I had already been at the gym that morning, and there was NO sign saying family swim was canceled. When we returned around 5 PM, suddenly there was a sign stating "No family swim hours today." The manager told us we had to leave, and when I tried to politely provide feedback and explain that we had used family swim on Labor Day last year without an issue, he just kept repeating what the sign said instead of listening to the concern. The issue isn't simply that family swim was canceled and it's the lack of communication and how the situation was handled. We PAY for our children's memberships. If services are unavailable or hours change, members should be notified ahead of time through the app, not find out after arriving with their children. In-Shape needs better communication and better customer service from management.

It had been about a decade since I worked out daily. Many years ago, I was a devoted Pilates Coach/Ball Fitness Studios fan when I lived in Reno. And since then, I've never found a place I really loved or remained committed to. 2SA welcomed me and challenged me in ways I've never been challenged. I tried boxing and Piyo for the first time, loved both. Amanda's classes were great and she even ran over and held my hand doing lunges so I could get into the correct position. With pretty large class sizes, that really says a lot about the instructor. Most of her students had been with her for years, no other place in Monterey Bay has that kind of cult following this gym and its instructors have. Most people want to work out in a place where everyone looks like their ideal physique, and the people who attend this gym are definitely athletes. If you can get over your own insecurities and put in the work, you will love it here. Lastly, customer service is how it should be. Cancelling is easy. Signing up is easy. The monthly payment is low. There are no gimmicks or upselling or hassles. Just show up when you want to try a class and if you like it, join! Unfortunately with COVID I've been home doing Beachbody. I have a small child and can't make the drive over there for the foreseeable future. If I lived in Salinas, I'd be there in a heartbeat!

At this point, I do feel I have learned enough about weight training to not need a trainer, but I don't think I would push myself as hard if Tom weren't there saying "one more" over and over again. The place has all the equipment I need (I mostly train with free weights) to work out hard. Tom, the owner is an excellent trainer with lots of knowledge to share. Cons: The location is somewhat hidden, the cost is higher than other gyms, no crowds (if you are into people watching), no showers. I am just a BIG fan of this place. The cost is a little high, but that just means that only people serious about working out go there. I would give this place a 4.5, but since that is not an option I will round up to a 5. In case you are wondering the -.5 would be for the bathrooms not having any shower stalls. Update (11-17-2009)** I stand by what I said before, I really liked working out here, but I was just on the receiving end of a 4 letter word laden tirade from the owner because I turned the tv off. This is something I was given permission to do, but the owner feels that pressing the power button on the tv "broke everything". I follow all the rules, re-racked my weights, wiped down when I was done, etc. I was a model member so it was completely out of the blue for him to call my house to cuss me out. So it's a great place to work out, just be aware you could be on the receiving end of a tongue lashing. It's up to you if you want to stick around after that, I for one am not.
