I really don't like feeling like I'm at a frat party when I'm at a bar. The kind of atmosphere where everyone is trying too hard, know what I mean? While not necessarily the fault of Fishbone's, I really hate the douchy croud that I always feel like I'm encountering whenever I'm there-- not everyone mind you, but a good 75% of the patrons are tools. The service is awful here (managers and owners included). The food and sushi are good, I will give them that, but really, Fishbone's sucks. Maybe I'm bitter because last night it reeked of propane gas on the patio. Or maybe it's because my husband's White Russian came out as a vodka, gin and cream (gin instead of Kaluha? Yuck). Maybe it's because I'm irritated that the name of the restaurant makes no sense (Fishbone's, like in the possesive sense? The place is called "Fishbone is"?) It could be that it doesn't know if it wants to be fine dining or a sports bar. Or maybe it's simply because I don't like being around tools. Either way, I don't like this place, and if it wasn't for my eastside friends going here for dinner, I would never go back. All the smart-aleckedness aside... I actually like this place. They have a great Sunday brunch and they have some good food... However what makes this place great is their night crowd. The people tend to be very friendly and good looking and there is a good mix of people in their twenties and thirties. In summertime they have a great patio and the bartenders are friendly. I'm not that jazzed on their food, though the saganaki is excellent (but really, when is flaming cheese bad?). They have sushi now but I have never tried it. I enjoy coming here at night for drinks and entertainment. They usually have a good local band playing and sometimes on Sundays they have karaoke. It can get smokey and loud, but the drinks are strong and cheap, the wine and beer list is decent, and the bartenders are fantastic. Chances are you'll run into an old friend, or make a few new ones, by the end of the night. read more

This review is for sushi and drinks only. Mmmm sushi, anytime anywhere and Fishbones is ok with me. We ordered 4 different sushi rolls, dragon, spider, godzilla, and 1 other. All were very very good with fresh fish and other ingredients. The spider was the standout with some fried softshell crab in it. Soooo tasty. I also ordered a sea urchin piece of sushi. YUCKY, that's just my taste buds, other people loved it. I ordered 1/2 dz oysters as a app. Not bad but whoever was doing the shucking left a lot of shell shards under the oyster, good thing i wasn't just slurping them down. -1 star The only other complaint was $10.50 for a margarita, seemed a lot pricey for a little drink. -1 star. - This review is for food and drink at table (as opposed to bar) service only - Consistently horrendous, terrible service! I've been here twice in the past few months for drinks and dinner, and elected to sit with my respective companions on the lefthand side of the restaurant (closest to 9 Mile, opposite the parking lot). Maybe this was our mistake, but the first time, we weren't even approached by servers in the first 30 minutes, and left. The second time (my friend's suggestion for venue), we sat in the same section closer to the front, and again, it took 20 minutes to get drinks. Yet, engaged in conversation, we stuck it out. The sushi we ordered was ok, nothing special, but the waiter was borderline rude and very unattentive. We're around 30; perhaps he thought we wouldn't leave a good tip (and he was right!). He would've gotten 25% minimum had we not had such an awful experience. Anyway, we ate rather quickly and left. I haven't been back and would really think twice about setting foot inside here again for food (drinks might be a different story; the bar area has a cool ambiance but is always very crowded). In all, it seems that restaurant patrons don't really matter to the staff perhaps as much as those sitting in the bar, which I guess is the "main attraction." read more

Been here several times, service is usually good, but the hostess at the outdoor patio yesterday evening looked bored and actually put out when we approached for a table. Sitting on the patio was nice, but it's still just as loud outside as it is inside. Fishbones is not the place for a quiet dinner. That said, the food is good. I like their sushi, and one of my favorite menu items is the lobster po' boy sandwich. I was really disappointed with the seafood gumbo that I tried - it was served lukewarm, and it was bland in flavor. Overall though, I like the place, and plan to keep going back. read more

Their sushi is decent. Not the best I've had, but pretty good. Dragon Roll is my favorite. Growing up in St. Clair Shores, I find that this place is like a high school reuinion for me (which usually is a "con" in my book). This is definitely a spot for people who cruise the Nautical Mile (ha) to gather. At night, there is live music and a young crowd, people get done up in their club/bar clothes. Drinks are overpriced, but not as excessively as I have seen other places. Still, I gotta say. One or two nights a summer, when I'm back around the ol' hometown, I do love stopping up here and grabbing a drink on their patio. The patio is the thing that always draws me in. A huge circle bar outside, a firepit (get there early cause the seats around that go fast), can smell the fresh water air off of Lake St. Clair....it's just usually a good night. Even if i'm running into a few folks I haven't seen since graduation (and liked it that way) and paying a little extra per drink than I would elsewhere. I even don't mind getting a little more dressed up (I am a dive bar kind of gal, so it's nice to do something different now and then). If you're around, and it's summer, stop by. But if you don't make it here, don't feel all that bad about it either. :) read more

Solid place. I've never been to this particular Fishbone's, having only been to the ones downtown and the other over by work. - Stella and Fat Tire on tap. Always an immediate plus. - The place is huge. The bar area is enormous, and has a ton of seating. Outdoor patio if you want to head that way. Private room if you want to book an event there. - The crowd...it's a mixed bag. There's enough of a crowd of "normal" people that it's technically possible to avoid intermingling with the dbag / preppy / "I'm a boater" / hipster glasses / "I'm dressed for a NYC nightclub even though I'm in St Clair Shores" crowds. Wow, I'm judgmental, huh? Oh well, good for me! - Had a few great, random conversations with people, which is always also a plus. - There was a band there. While they were at least entertaining, someone needs to explain the concept of "understand your limits" when it comes to music and vocals. "Pretty Young Thing (PYT)" almost made my ears bleed. - While I didn't personally get anything to eat there (please reference: "Stella and Fat Tire on tap", and who wants to mess with that?!), I did talk with a few people who had, and they were extremely complimentary. Nobody had anything bad to say at all. - The baseball game(s) were on the big screens, and so it's not a bad place to catch a game or two. read more

Had the crawfish étouffée tonight while here on business for $18. Overall it was good but not great. Don't get me wrong, I would order it again its just that I am used to South Louisiana cooking and the roux looked and tasted like it came out of a can. I was on the fence if I should give three or four stars. The food was decent but not great. The seafood gumbo had a very subtle raw flour taste to it. That unique complex roux flavor that is a cornerstone of a Louisiana cooking was not fully developed. I had the nigiri. The fish was fresh but the rice was somewhat overly sweet and the texture was unusually dense. The food was decent and I will definitely come back, but there is definitely room for improvement. Great food and great service! We arrived at prime dinner time on a Saturday night with a group of 10. We expected the wait to be ridiculous and at first we were greeted with looks like, "Yikes, that's going to be tough" on the hostess' faces. But we were seated right away! Danielle was our server and she was prompt, very helpful, and very friendly. Our food was delicious. I started off with a crawfish boil that had good flavor but was heavily covered in spice. My hands were a mess after but don't worry, there are sinks all over the restaurant to wash your hands. Weird, but convenient. I had the catfish atchafalaya as my entree. It came with soup or salad and I chose a cup of clam chowder. It was more chowder than clam and I only ate half of it. My entree was delicious--a large amount of crawfish in the etouffee topping and it had great creole flavor. Between that and the asparagus and baked potato sides I had to take half of it home. I can't wait to return to Fishbones soon. The atmosphere seemed fun and a great place to watch a big game. read more

Nice setting. Ambiance but the food is mediocre for the price. Starts with doughy bread. Willy garden salad with 1 grape tomato 2 slices of dry looking cucumber. Next main course came with 4 small red roasted potoes that were cold. Hand full of green beans that were overcooked. Asked for warm potatoes and they dropped some in the deep fryer and over seasoned them. They were still raw. Bonus. I did get a free dessert which was good. read more

Went back to Fishbones last night. They changed the menu! Now I know it's not a pasta place..I get it. But if you're only going to have TWO pasta dishes, why would you make them both have pesto sauce? Not everyone likes pesto and when I asked for a different sauce, the crabby waitress said they "might" be able to throw together a garlic butter sauce. Um, no thanks to someone back in the kitchen Googling garlic butter sauce and giving it a try. C'mon, Fishbones...that was NOT a good menu change. And they got rid of the chicken piccata, too. This is my preferred place to go to when I go out for the night in SCS. I enjoy the atmosphere during the summer months because of the nice big outdoor patio. There is a big mix of age groups here which I always find entertaining...from the douchey, preppy frat boys, to desperate cougars looking to pick up anyone who looks their way, I am always finding something to laugh at. I would rather not come here on a Friday night and sit inside because of the band that plays there. They play so loud you can barely hear yourself talk to your group. The food, not always amazing, is a bit pricey, which is expected. I seem to be always drawn to their spinach salad. It is probably one of my favorites. The bartenders also make strong drinks which are worth your money. read more

Excellent meal, as always. The bread is exquisite. My main complaint is that, when I requested a separate bill, the waitress became condescending and took it from me and gave it to my brother. I would love to have a word with them about it, because, like I said, I wanted to pay my bill myself. This normally wouldn't anger me so much, but when your waitress grabs it out of your hand, then it's an issue. Also, I tip pretty damn well whenever I go out to eat, (at least 25 percent), so this waitress, had she NOT done what she did, would have probably gotten an even bigger tip. Restaurant Week Disappointment. Not that I was expecting much since I have eaten food from the menu before from here, but I figured restaurant week Fishbones would want to show off what they have to offer. To their defense, this was our 3rd choice, the other 2 restaurants were packed so we officially settled for Fishbones, and settled we did. The food from the appetizers to the desert were not good and all tasted as if purchased from Casco, heated up and served. This review is not to take away from the fact this is the best patio in the Shores, and also the Sushi has always been good. There is just something overly disappointing about their other food, never been impressive and I will never know if this changes because I will never again eat anything here other than sushi. read more

Went there after boating this past Saturday evening. Fishbones has always had a nice environment and we have been there plenty of times for the bar but this is the first time I have eaten dinner there. Ordered the Spider Roll- Pricey $13.50 especially for a non-sushi place and lets just say that THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I HAVE EVER SPIT OUT SUSHI INTO MY NAPKIN. The deep fried crab was SO BURNT it was gross! Would have sent this back but already sent back asparagus (side dish) since it was so limp and yellow/brown- barely green. Go for the bar & the service but don't pay the increased "we are right by the water so it costs more" food prices. read more

Ate at the one in St. Clair Shores recently -- a party of three. The vibe & menu is still faux Cajun but acceptable. What is NOT acceptable is the automatic tip they add on your bill. They have little cards at the table that explain this -- all positioned away from customers. So -- your bill comes, you add a tip -- and you've just paid about 35% above the actual meal cost. The waitress offered to give back the extra tip but that wasn't her fault so I let her keep it. I told the manager that was a crummy policy; he did not apologize or offer anything, saying the policy was to "incentivize the staff." I replied that he had just incentivized me never to eat there again. I can see an automatic tip on a party of 6 or larger -- but 2 or 3? Ridiculous. read more

Walked into Fishbones St Clair Shores tonight. Was greeted by a friendly hostess who took us immediately to our table. The new decor was nice and very inviting. Cocktails were good. Service was great. The food was excellent. The shrimp and grits are a must try. My friend ordered the kamikaze roll and it was awesome. Would gladly return here any day. Can't wait until the patio is open to come back and enjoy dinner al fresco. read more

i Used to eat at Fishbones at least twice a month before they closed for remodeling. I thought it was going to be so much better after the reopening. Boy was I wrong! Got a carry out last week. I ordered a bacon cheeseburger, medium. It was well done, not one bit of pink and no bacon. It was so dry and it came with a side of about 10 fries. What a rip off for $15.00. My daughter got a turkey burger. Same thing, 10 fries. I am so disappointed. read more
