Me and my girlfriend came for a date here, not knowing what to expect. As the huge parking lot was half full, we were concerned that we wouldn't get a table... until we went inside. This place is so gigantic.
There is a mish-mash of design styles in the restaurant, harkening to new orleans, but also with a touch of "American chain restaurant" - including tiled columns, cast iron decorations and lights, then some pretty uninteresting seating and design choices.
We got seated in a bit of a weird spot. It turned out to be fine, and the people watching was great. My girlfriend said the place reminded her of a theme park restaurant - with its size and layout. Our server, Tristan, was excellent. Very fast, kept checking in with us, explaining the menu as necessary.
The beer menu is limited but has good options - go for the Saugatuck neopolitan milk stout (on nitro) if they have it. It's a bit sweet but has tremendous amounts of flavor. they also have weihenstephaner hefeweizen, as an example, which is top-tier and affordable.
I didn't know what to expect with the food. The menu is really gigantic. They have sushi, they have seafood, they have New Orleans favorites. We ordered some fried zucchini sticks, then I went for the catfish atchafalaya- grilled catfish fillets covered with crawfish etoufee. My girlfriend got the pasta orleans with chicken.
The zucchini sticks were the perfect amount of tenderness, and I liked the batter a lot - but it kept falling off. Unfortunate. The main courses were astoundingly good. For the short amount of time it took to come out of the kitchen (seriously, like ten minutes), it was much better than either of us expected. My crawfish tails were perfectly cooked, tender and not rubbery, the catfish flaky. So much flavor in the etoufee, plus a side of a potato pancake that I didn't know was coming with it, and also very flavorful! My girlfriend's chicken was moist and cooked through, the pasta had a ton of flavor and distinctly basil-y flavor.
We were full about halfway through our main course, with the bread they brought out with herbed butter and the zucchini sticks before hand, so we had a lot to take home (I am happy to report that they reheated well too).
While the price point may be a little high for me for frequent trips (we spent about $80 for drinks, app and mains, including tip), and I'm not really into the atmosphere, I would say Fishbone's would be a special occasion or a serious seafood/creole craving. However, the folks here really knock it out of the park with service, selection, speed, and quality. I am going to be thinking about my meal for weeks. read more
