I needed a restaurant that I could grab a late lunch with a friend. Many restaurants close at 2:00pm, but we were not able to meet until 1:00pm. I wanted to relax and not be rushed with this friend. Well Fishbones fit the bill and I have been wanting to go there for quite some time. We sat outside on the pretty vine laden side patio with birds flying about. The birds were drowned out by the sounds of trucks, car music, squeaking breaks etc. all stopping for the light at Walker Avenue. Of course, this can't be helped. I pretended I was sitting at a busy Italian Cafe on the streets of Rome and dealt with it. The waitstaff let my friend and I catch up and have us plenty of time to read the menu. The menu was a scannable QR code and very easy to pull up. The menu is quite varied from all sorts of seafood to chicken and great a great offering of sides. I ordered the jumbo shrimp sautéed in garlic wine sauce with sautéed spinach and asparagus as sides. My friend ordered the crab soup and a Caesar salad. It took quite a long time for our meal to arrive. It didn't bother me because we had a lot of catching up to, but it was curious to me. It was well after 1:00pm so the restaurant wasn't jammed packed for lunch. It was the Tuesday after Labor Day so maybe that effected their timing a bit. Any way, my meal was delicious. The shrimp were delicious and sautéed to perfection along with the spinach and asparagus. My friend said her crab soup and Caesar salad was tasty as well. The restaurant is kind of hip inside with high top tables and a bar. There is a large parking located on the right had side of the restaurant. Fishbones is located in groovy Lindley Park area amongst other area favorite restaurants. It's a fun section of Greensboro if you haven't been. If you're in the mood for seafood, Fishbones is a great local place to check out. Located in the Lindley park neighborhood it joins other local favorites such as Lindley Park Filling Station and Emma Keys. Prior to COVID I visited on a Saturday evening around 7, and we were surprisingly able to grab a table after waiting maybe 5 minutes. We had previously attempted to dine at Bonefish Grill, but it was just too busy for a Saturday night. I am glad we were able to support a local business instead. I began by ordering a vodka soda and let me tell you it was a strong pour, which I love! We ordered the popcorn shrimp appetizer to share. The batter itself had a nice kick to it, and the Thai basil coconut aioli that came with it was delicious. I really enjoyed switching back and forth between that and the spicy chili garlic honey sauce. The spiciness of the sauce nicely intensified that of the shrimp itself. For my main dish I ordered the ahi tuna steak tacos which were served with chips and salsa. Two tacos were just the right amount after demolishing the popcorn shrimp. The cilantro and radish added a nice freshness, and I loved the white sauce which they didn't over-utilize. I will definitely visit again! read more

I was so excited to try out Fishbones! I heard so many great things about it and I had a gift card burning a hole in my pocket. There were about 3 other tables seated when we arrived. My husband and I each ordered a beer and we ordered the lobster roll to share. I have been eyeing this on Instagram for a few days and could not wait to try it out! food and beer were delivered quickly, however as soon as the food was delivered we were forced to evacuate due to a fire in the back of the restaurant. The staff did a great job of getting everyone out safely and fortunately no one was hurt. While we were waiting outside, one other group of patrons went back in to grab their beverages and I thought that was a great idea, so I went back in and grabbed our food and drinks as well. I husband and I, after making sure our car was not burning in the back of the building, enjoyed our food and beer while waiting for the firemen to announce it was clear. As soon as we finished eating, the wait staff was quick to worry about us paying our tabs and did not inquire whether all of the patrons waiting outside were OK. It was a stressful situation for everyone! Sadly, the waitstaff's biggest concern was getting for the tabs paid. I honestly was a little surprised to be paying full price for a meal that was interrupted, not by the fault of the staff, but still interrupted. We planned to stay for a few more drinks and dessert. I feel like a little consideration should have been made. Especially when we ended up bussing our own table and taking the dishes inside. A comment was made to us after presenting the gift card, because it did pay for the majority of our meal and we only ended up paying about five dollars out of pocket. The comment was that we got off cheap that night. I attempted to address this with management by reaching out via message. I asked for someone to please call me so I could speak with them about the incident. I was informed that the owner would be texting me later. Instead of making a voice to voice call where we could discuss the issue, I was forced to relay the information via text. It's been years since I've been to Fishbones and it is everything I remember! It's a corner bar with a quaint little bar tables and outdoor dining area that fill up fast, but the food is worth it. Start with the Thai Chili Wings and you won't be disappointed. They were a favorite then and now, and so good I forgot to get a picture! The cocktails were delicious and I ended on Blackened Salmon with cheesy grits and spinach: amazing. The tuna sandwich was an old favorite as well. Definitely time for me to update this review of Fishbones. I'm still a fan of the place, and it's certainly my go-to spot when I just want to sit down and tear into a pile of peel-and-eat shrimp. The menu continues to be diverse and unique, and the prices have stayed pretty reasonable. Why the 4 then? It still continues to have it's quirks and off-nights. The service isn't always great, and the chairs will make you want to throw them out the window after sitting in them for just half an hour (if you're strong enough to lift them, they are quite heavy!) Some of the food combinations are a little strange as well. There is a heavy reliance on chips and salsa here, and it often doesn't make a ton of sense. I recommend switching to one of the other sides even if there is an upcharge to do so. The blackened green beans are great, especially dipped in the sauce they are served with. All in all, I will continue to be a semi-regular patron of this place, quirks and all! read more

Always on point with their staple menu but then add in the weekly specials and this is the place to check out frequently! Old stand by is the twisted chicken salad. This was one of the best meals I've had in a long time. The filet was so incredibly flavorful and tender. I ordered medium and it was cooked more than pink but it remained tender and perfect. Hanging in downtown G'boro for a business conf. and had some time so hit up Fishbones after reading the reviews. FB's is located close to Greensboro college in a cool neighborhood spot across from a coffee shop and other restaurants. The vibe is a local bar, pub eatery and there were plenty of patrons and still places to sit during the dinner hour. Musical note-the ambient music is hard/alternative rock-it won't melt your face off or give you ear bleeds but it's noticeable in the background. I grabbed a spot at the bar and perused the menu, I had a good view of the kitchen and it was entertaining to watch the chef at work. I was disappointed to discover that they were out of oysters, I'd hoped to get the fried oyster appetizer but they were out due to some delivery issues. I selected the grilled salmon, asparagus and mashed potatoes along with an half and half tea. Food was delivered pretty fast, it was fresh and tasty. The salmon was cooked well, not too done, the asparagus was grilled and retained some of the crisp and the mashed potatoes had skins. A good solid meal, good flavor and filling yet light. My most recent takeout order was not very good. Several of my trips include an order of wings and oysters as an appetizer for sure! During this visit, the place was crowded and extremely busy on the Wednesday night that I dropped in. My wife and I entered from the rear and met a waiter near the bar who took our order for takeout. We decided on two orders of oysters, as one order is gone fairly quickly between my partner and me. Lastly, we added an order of wings to go. We were informed that the order would be up in about 20 minutes, to which it was. We checked the order and bag for all items. Once confirming everything was correct, we headed home. Everything looked great and was still warm. The oysters were good and the sauces as well. However, the wings were salty and breaded. I did not finish the one wing I attempted and the sauce that I assumed was ranch, had a thick Mayo-like consistency and onion flavor that I wouldn't prefer. I enjoy a slight acid in all foods so i loved that it is tomato based but rooted in the umami-ness of the seafood stock. I did enjoy the fried catfish. I do think the rice maybe didnt belong with this dish as another veggie would give better balance. Just tried this quaint little place on a impromptu late lunch with my hubby. First thing I noticed is the water actually tasted good. LOL. I know this is weird but I also try to drink water and there are a lot of places with nasty tasting water. I was pleasantly surprised. We had two appetizers. The fried flounder nuggets for which I loved. And the crab soup that the hubby loves. Funny thing was that we each did not care for the others favorite. Beware I stuffed myself with the fried flounder nuggets. LOL. They were yummy. For our main dishes we had the blackened cat fish sandwich and fish tacos. Both meals looked and tasted good. My only regret was that I could not finish my sandwich because I was full from the appetizer. This of course is a good problem because it means the food is tasty. Fishbones was really delicious last night. The salmon was cooked to perfection (forgive my photo but I dug right in before taking a pic!). I originally wanted just a salad w salmon but when I saw blackened green beans on the menu I was curious so I had to try them. They were flavored well (I could've used a little less salt) but more on the al dente side for me. The serving size for the beans is pretty good though. I didn't eat them all but I made SURE to finish that great salmon fillet and the salad, with a creamy Asian dressing that was also nice. You may be shocked when I tell you this, but of all the restaurants I have dined at in Greensboro, the one that I find the easiest to stick to my Weight Watchers purple plan with delicious food is a bar.. and I don't drink! The first time a friend invited me to meet them at Fishbones at Walker and Elam, was for a drink. He got a beer and I ordered a Diet Coke, but was quickly informed they had their own brand of diet soda which already turned me off. The taste of the diet drink was okay but nothing to write home about so, I thought this place's days were numbered. All tables were high tops and I prefer regular tables. Two strikes against this place before we even ordered food! And then I looked at the menu. I saw steamed peel and eat shrimp! I saw blackened green beans! I saw edamame! How good could the food be at a local bar / restaurant, but I figured I would give it a shot. Boy was that food delicious!! The steamed shrimp were scrumptious the blackened green beans were out of this world and the edamame was salty and tasty and just right. The best part of it was that the entire meal was 0 points on Weight Watchers' purple plan. I was sold! I'll even drink their Grade B diet soda!!! Since then I have been back numerous times, turning friends onto this local bar/restaurant known for a good drink, but also a great place for tasty and healthy food. Don't get me wrong, their menu is filled with all kinds of goodies, but nothing pleases me more when I can find a restaurant where I can eat plenty and eat healthy! I have no idea what their alcohol menu is like, but over my numerous visits I have watched my friends order all kinds of beers and drinks and they seem to be pleased with that variety and offering as well. I love going to Fishbones because it is in the UNCG neighborhood, which is where I lived and attended graduate school back in the seventies. The facades of the restaurants and stores in the neighborhood have changed, but it looks just like it did when I was in my twenties, which is comforting and fun. I even remember some years back when Fishbones first opened, I had a friend who had a rock band and performed there sometimes. I'm a little vague on whether it was Fishbones at that time or had another name but it was definitely at the corner at that site. Lots of history in that neighborhood. Fishbones was one of the first restaurants I visited as we started coming out of this pandemic. I religiously follow my weight watchers purple plan with Ron and Victoria, and when I told them about Fishbones, they were dying to try it. It was perfect. We showed up and there was an outside table all the way in the corner. We took off our masks, the night was beautiful and it was one of the first times I started to feel like a human being again. I thank Fishbones for making me feel safe and still whipping up those delicious healthy foods. Every time I go there, the young staff is friendly, helpful, attentive and hard-working. My only criticism of the place is that I wish they had a few tables inside where one can sit down without being at a high top table. I wanted so much to bring Mom here while she was alive, but it would have been too difficult for her to get up on one of those stools. So as they say, don't judge a book by its cover. At first glance it looks like a local college joint where you can grab a beer, and indeed, that is true. But don't underestimate how healthy and plentiful you can eat at Fishbones at a decent price if you want to stay healthy and enjoy a casual bar atmosphere. I'm sure they offer a lot of other great things, but I order the same three things every time I come... steamed shrimp, blackened string beans and edamame, and I am as happy as a pig in s h..!! read more

This is a hoppin' little place in the corner of Elam and Walker in Greensboro. The sign faces the street and it was easy to find with parking areas on both sides of the street so you can walk easily to any of the four corners. We walked right in for dinner with little wait - albeit this was for my 74 year old dad's birthday so we arrived at 4:30 :) Dad was looking for crab legs and we didn't realize they weren't on the menu, but he ordered the shrimp and grits and knowing the menu and website talked about Cajun influence and us having lived in New Orleans when I was a little girl, he said he was so glad he ordered it because it was the best he ever had! My mom and husband both ordered the fish and chips and they said it was so good, my husband had polished his off before I could finish half of my salad. They had a Thai Angus beef salad on the menu, and being vegan, they were happy to comp the beef with black beans (and the price!) to accommodate me, which is more than some higher end restaurants in the area we're willing to do. This pic is the only one I have and not indicative of how great the food looked when it arrived at the table. It was so much food, this is how much I took home of the salad. Well worth the trip to GBO. The atmosphere was fun, lots of folks buzzing around and enjoying the beautiful summer day. I came here last night for dinner with a coworker since I will be moving back to Raleigh on Friday (woot woot!). I grew up in the Triad but never found myself venturing out into downtown Greensboro all that much so I had never been to Fishbones before. But I did not fret, because my coworker just happens to be a local business expert (hi Erik!) so I trusted his reviews and recommendation of this place. He did not let me down! Believe it or not, this was my FIRST time sitting down at a restaurant and participating in patio dining since the pandemic hit. I celebrated with a glass of wine, naturally. I think they did a good job at spacing out their patio seating and the staff were wearing masks. The restaurant was steady with customers but not busy or crowded so I felt safe. I ordered the Ahi Tuna Steak Tacos ($10), rare and blackened, which came with a side of tortilla chips and salsa. I also ordered a glass of Cabernet ($9) which was yummy but just your standard cab, in my opinion. The tacos were good and I enjoyed the chips and salsa. I wish the portions were a little larger but the prices here were very fair, especially for a seafood restaurant, so I didn't mind. Our server was pretty busy but even so, she was very nice and we were well taken care of. No complaints there! Aside from the good food, I was happy that there was a small parking lot right behind the restaurant (only because I hate parallel parking). Ha! Fishbones has long been one of my all time favorite Greensboro spots. The food is wonderful, prices great, and atmosphere so chill. The first time I ever tried fish tacos and ahi tuna was here, and I'm hooked on both! Back when I was single, I always felt comfortable sitting at the bar and eating alone. In fact, I often chatted with nice neighbors there, as it has a great neighborhood feel. The service is always great as well. I'm really glad they provided some shade on the patio, as it's a nice place to watch people coming and going on the corner. Highly recommend! I wish the owner would develop the space next door that used to the the old Blind Tiger. I have heard rumors, and I would absolutely be excited to check that out. read more

Decided to take a stroll off of the mainstream Greensboro food options as the ACC tournament and Duke Carolina game all happened to be going on this past weekend. I was pleased with how busy yet how fast the turn around time was for a table. Had a date with me and we were seated very quickly. Mostly 2 person high top tables it's an intimate setting for quality seafood. We had an appetizer of popcorn shrimp. The breading was crisp while the insides juicy. Paired with basil coconut aioli we opted to also get the spice chili honey sauce on the side too. Both sauces elevated the flavors. My entree was the catfish sandwich on ciabatta. While fried, it was light. The roll was toasted properly and I put the left over chili sauce on it to give it the needed moisture as I left the remoulade off. My date had the ahi tuna steak tacos. They were prepped as per ordered and adorned with fresh produce. The crispness of the radish gave a good bite to the tuna. The salsa that came with the tortilla chips was also made in house and though lacking a slight saltiness, was perfectly acidic. read more

I'm not sure why we've not eaten here before - name association with Bonefish (a place I do not care for) maybe?; not all that visible?; crowded corner with limited parking options?; or just a dumb move? Anyway, reading Jessica G's recent review got me off my rotund rear, and we headed there for lunch. There is parking in the back, but be warned the parking spots are marked off rather strangely, like a drunk would chalk out a set up for Hop-Scotch (google it, its retro). The restaurant is laid out in a rectangular, very shotgun shape, with a well sized bar. The vast majority of the tables are for 2 people, they are small, and the elevated type. I would imagine that when crowded this would be a rather noisy place. We had studied the menu a bit, and had a pretty good idea what we would order, but we traded out the Shrimp & Grits for one of the daily specials, Jambalaya ($14.95). We added the Popcorn Shrimp appetizer ($7.60) and the Cioppino ($13.95). And they have Stella on draft ($4.75), so that was my drink order. The Popcorn Shrimp was out quickly, and was not a favorite of ours. It is marinated, leaving a taste we didn't like, and they were not crisply fried - so this was a fail on both the taste and texture levels. The entrees were both excellent, and well sized, though each is a bit pricey for a lunch dish! The Jambalaya was loaded with shrimp and slices of a great tasting sausage. There is a fair amount of heat in this dish, and it builds during the eating process - very nicely played. The Cioppino had a nice amount of Cod, with a lesser amount of both Shrimp and Clams, and it is served with with grilled asparagus and garlic ciabatta bread. The cod was very flavorful and very tender, but the shrimp were a bit rubbery. The clams were exceptional, just wish there had been more of the. The broth was perfect, and the bread was great for dunking. This was overall, a nice experience, and we'll definitely come back, and the menu is rather broad, so there is plenty to explore. Tried going to the pizza place across the street the other night, but they were packed, so my Aunt and I came here for dinner instead. Lucked out and got 2 free seats at the bar and the people working were attentive and friendly. I got the fish and chips and my Aunt got shrimp with asparagus. It was a ton of food;I definitely felt like their meals were underpriced. I enjoyed the wasabi coleslaw (but wish it had a bit more kick), and my only real complaint was that the fish was very heavily breaded. My Aunt loved her meal, we definitely walked away full. The place was small but the choices were varied. It was a little after lunch and the 1 bartender handled it all with expertise. She was very pleasant. It's a small joint, it gets busy out of no where, so don't be offended if they have to head on to the next customer while you decide. Just order a drink and decide! They're located in an old corner neighborhood near UNCG. The kitchen is tiny, and honestly, the fact that they can spit out the BEAUTIFUL quality of food fairly quickly and consistently that they do is AMAZING. While specials go quick, don't knock even the most basics of basics on the menu. I lived off their bologna sandwich, blackened green beans and salads all through college at UNCG! Why did it take me over 6 years to try this place? You can find me across the street at Common Grounds Tuesdays and later at Walker's for Karaoke. There are always people going in and out, and sitting on the patio eating, so it's clearly hopping. Every time we'd go to Lindley Park to dine, it was Sticks 'n' Stones, Emma Key's, or Lindley Park Filling Station. Well I saw a few reviews, then I checked the specials on Facebook and...lobster roll! I eat mostly vegetarian but Lobster Roll is a treat. The portion is huge--2 hot dog buns full of meat, but not too much mayo (nice!) and some jalapenos and great sauce. Old Bay Seasoned Fries plus a pint of Guinness (hankering for some as my friend posted from Ireland earlier in the day) and it was a great meal, served fast, fresh and with great service at the bar.
