I am giving this place a 4 - but I will say that I'm not sure what all the fuss is about. The food was okay - fairly decent - but nothing to write home about or even promote another visit from my point of view. The place was clean - the people/staff were friendly enough - but none of them were what I would call excellent at customer service. They were doing a job - and they did it fine but with that same perspective - it's a job and I'll do it. I never felt the service was outstanding or that anyone was really happy to be there. We were in Dallas for 5 days 12/3-12/8 to visit my son and grandson. I discovered the Fish Shack on Yelp while searching for raw Gulf Coast oysters. Living in Reno, we have no access to Gulf Coast oysters. We went in on Wednesday afternoon and were lucky enough to have the owner, Frank, as our server at the bar. He said he has a delivery of fresh oysters every two days. He was delightful to talk to which made this discovery so much better. We had a dozen raw gulf coast oysters with some of the coldest beer I've had in a while. Everything was exactly what this Texas girl likes. Plenty of saltines, oysters, cocktail sauce and horseradish. They were so good that we went back a second time the next day. Then a third time on Friday. We also sampled the hush puppies which were wonderful. The fried shrimp, fried oysters and French fries were also delicious. I think you can see I was totally taken with the Fish Shack and that it will become a must go to every time I come to Dallas. Do yourself a favor, discover the yummy for yourself. read more

Looking for a late lunch in an area I rarely visit, I searched YELP for seafood near me. Up came quite a few choices, most of them priced higher than I was looking for. Fish Shack was close by and seemed to be just right. The food, service and atmosphere were great. Lots of TVs showing sports events in a big dining room. Big menu with pretty much any seafood choice you have in mind. Go for it. read more

This was my first visit to Fish Shack. My husband has eaten there before and suggested that we go. I must say that the fried catfish and shrimp basket was fantastic!! I haven't eaten a great catfish meal since we used to eat at a seafood restaurant in Rowlett/Rockwall area that was located near Lake Ray Hubbard called Cajun Catfish. We ate there quite frequently. Idk what happened but it went out of business. They had the best catfish I've ever tasted!! Well Fish Shack reminded me of Cajun Catfish. The fish and shrimp were fried to perfection! They were not too salty or undercooked. The hush puppies didn't come with the basket so we ordered some separately. They were very tasty as well. The service was good and fast! The ambiance was nice. We got there before the crowd so it was quiet and some of the other patrons were very nice as they stopped by our table to speak and share a laugh. Hubby and I like to order our usual - combo fried catfish and coconut shrimp with a side salad instead of French fries. One order is large enough to split! There is a $ .75 up charge for the shrimp to be coconut instead of just fried but to me it is totally worth it. The side salad is so good - the lettuce is always curly, green and fresh, with carrots, purple cabbage shreds, avocado and cucumber slices and croutons. They are always so busy on Friday nights, especially during Lent. We had a hard time getting through on the phone tonight, called several times and got a busy signal. Decided to just go up there and order it to-go. The staff is always great - cashier was friendly, cooks always consistently fry the fish and shrimp perfectly and the sweet man that cleans and busses the tables is as nice as can be! This Fish Shack location is also great! I came with my work team for lunch a few days ago and had a fun time. Same excellent food as the Plano location, but there's a lot more space, so the only thing you really have to wait for is getting through the line to order during the lunch rush. The shrimp po boy remains my favorite thing to order here, but the catfish fillets and hush puppies and fries were also delicious. Some other people in our party ordered grilled tilapia and the seafood soup, which both looked delicious and came in hefty portions. Everything went well. Sorta glad the restaurant we went to was closed on Lemon Ave so we drove around I googled Good Fish Place AND Walla. I ordered 2 fish filets with 3 butterfly shrimps coleslaw and hush puppies that made my day so delicious not soaked in dark grease like some do and they weren't miniature the shrimp were a good size plus not rubbery cooked perfectly the filets we moist and the crust was loose on the fish. This was our "go-to" for fried seafood for many years. Some of the best fried catfish and shrimp anywhere. The fact that you can make your own cocktail sauce from raw ingredients or spice up the house sauce with more horseradish, or your choice of pepper sauce is a big plus. Seating is comfortable with only one small community "high top" table (I dislike high tops), or the bar. No hideous industrial metal chairs to be found (thank you!). Comfortable booths and wooden chairs. Order at the bar and they deliver to your table. Easy enough. Big menu with lots of selections, but we don't care for the broiled or grilled stuff here. It's just lacking. Hard to explain, but it doesn't present well and isn't up to the competition. OTOH the fried seafood is great here. I like the Santorini shrimp cocktail as well. Our problem now is we just stopped eating fried seafood. We love it, but we just need to stay away. It's got to be one of those "once in a blue moon" treat meals, not once a week. I hate it, but my body is happier on grilled seafood. In addition, we came here for a meeting and we're treated to a limited menu by the host. No problem with the menu, I had catfish and she had shrimp, and we traded off. We both agreed the catfish was not up to par being as the two prices were very thin on meat, which is not at all like we normally experience here, and she said the shrimp just didn't taste as good as previous visits. Could it be the meeting food was sub-par because it was selected just for this meeting? IDK. We were disappointed to say the least. Your mileage may vary when dining as a regular paying customer. Coconut shrimp is my favorite and this is some of the best I have eaten in Dallas. Tiki Hubby went with catfish and coleslaw 3 large fish fillets batter dip cornmeal crispy and cooked perfectly. prices were great too. Let me start by letting you know that this doesn't come close to Fish & Tails! Same concept, order then sit down... No servers! The reviews were just so good, that I just presumed it could come close... I should of just walked away when I asked if they had ceviche, and was told they did, but they call it "Fish Salad". We went ahead and ordered that, the salmon, & a pound of their shrimp... When I asked if the shrimp would come seasoned, she said they sprinkle cayenne pepper on top. The first items to arrive were the ceviche & shrimp. I quickly learned why their ceviche was considered a fish salad. It was placed over a bed of lettuce! The shrimp, was just boiled in water, without any other seasonings. (besides the cayenne) Last to show, was the salmon. My first I thought was that it looked great, with some grill marks that would make some steakhouses jealous. But when I tried to take my first bite. I was having trouble using my fork to break a piece off. It was tremendously overcooked. I've had overcooked salmon before, but this was just horrible. My wife was not happy at all. To the point where she got up to ask for a manager to come visit our table. This is so unlike her, we usually just cope with it. I guess the margarita she had, let her inner foodie come out! She wasn't rude or disrespectful in any way. But she explained to the "Manager" that our entire experience had not been pleasant. She said that she could tell that our salmon was beyond overcooked! And that if we wanted to have some better seasoned shrimp, that we could ask for it the way their crawfish is seasoned. She asked what she could do to make our meal better, I let her know that she didn't have to do anything. But she asked if we liked crab, sausage, corn & potatoes. I let her know that we usually have the platter at Fish & Tails. She then told us that she would have them prepare a fresh platter the way she likes it made. The oysters in the order were all breading and so tiny it was embarrassing, fried okra was good, coleslaw was average. I have been a Fish Shack devotee since Frank opened the original in Plano in 2009. I was in DFW for a visit this week and stopped into the Richardson Fish Shack for a quick lunch. The Santorini cocktail, also known as "The Spicy," has never failed me. Delectable shrimp, Kalamata olives, avocado (which I trade to my girlfriend for her olives), and peppers & onions in a tomato base make for a filling and healthy meal on which I could live. We added the chargrilled oysters this time, and they are addictive. In 13 years I have never had a bad dish or bad service at either Fish Shack. The staff feels like family, and the food is as if cooked by your mom: with great love. The atmosphere is excellent; always good sports on the screen, and you meet some very interesting people at The Shack. Hands down, the best seafood restaurant around. read more
