This is what I would call a modern hole in the wall. The staff was so nice and accommodating even thought the place was packed wall to wall. It's not the biggest restaurant nor do they have the biggest menu - but in my opinion, these are the best kind of restaurants! They perfect the menu that they have without sacrificing quality for variety. From their poke bowl to the salmon burger to the scallop and shrimp melt - nothing was short of amazing. This is definitely a great spot, it's just a little tight for bringing the family, but they were very accommodating. Definitely a cool spot to grab a cold one and a quick bite of seafood! Love this place! It's a little small inside so can feel cramped during busy peak moments but they have some outdoor seating if u want to enjoy the fresh air. I had to try the chowder fries (French fries with white clam chowder and bacons). The fries were so crispy and even smothered with clam chowder, didn't become too soggy. This was my favorite! My group also had the calamari, the marinated skirt steak taco and a traditional, grilled swordfish taco. The calamari was fried just perfectly and crispy. The marinated steak was my favorite out of the 2 tacos and was so flavorful and tender. I rarely stop by anywhere in Carlsbad to eat, but happy I found a spot in case I do. read more

We ordered takeout yesterday and we were really happy with what we got! The calamari fritti was crispy and the squid was nice and soft. But what really got my attention was the clam chowder! EVERY bite had clams in it. A lot of places I go to really skimp our on the clams but not here! We got the family size clam chowder and I shared some between my toddler and I for dinner and we split it for lunch the next day. Everything in my coastal wrap was good except the tuna, did not taste fresh and the flavors of the sear did not match the others in the wrap at all. I love poke and cooked fish and about every type of fish there is cooked every which way, it was not good and disgustingly over priced. I paid 14$ for a mid to small sized wrap. At bear flag fish co you can get a a much larger amount of food and much fresher caught fish for cheaper... not to mention that's a brisk walk to the beach, this is ridiculous and I don't recommend ever eating here it's a money grab that's meant to look nice but isn't. First of all we have eaten in all three fish districts and love the food. However last night, my wife and I ordered shrimp and mahi-mahi tacos and they got the dressings switched even after telling the guy what I wanted on them. Food good but service is terrible, maybe they should pay more attention to their customers and less time on their cellphones. Now in all fairness, I will reveal that the first time I ate here, I did not like my meal. But I was with a larger group, and they were all raving about their food. So I went back and really enjoyed my subsequent dishes. Luckily, I was smart enough to listen to the wise reviews of friends. What I did not like was the poke dish. We had been to the Fish District in Solana Beach and decided to try the Carlsbad location since we were in the area visiting some local breweries. Fish District again did not disappoint...here is what we noticed: - It's one of those places where you order at the counter, get a number, and then wait for it to be delivered to your table. The seating is fairly limited inside and there is very limited seating outside. I imagine that during peak times this place gets pretty busy and seats would be at a premium. - The food was really good. I ordered the 3 piece fish & chips and my wife got the salmon & kale bowl. And, the prices were very reasonable. - We didn't partake this time, but it is a plus that you can get a beer while dining. Bottom line: Great local option for fish, and related seafood. We love the seafood in this little fast, casual seafood place. For my parents, the fish and chips is one of the best in town, and they both like the coleslaw too. For me, I love the tempura fried portobello mushrooms, and one of the fresh fish plates. And they quite thoughtfully list their farmed fish separate from their wild caught fish which I really appreciate. Everything we have chosen has been delicious and fresh. Walked by it many time not knowing really what it was. Finally walked in to try it and was impressed instantly with how clean it is and the build out of the restaurant. I am out often and appreciate the atmosphere. This place is solid. Next, what to order I went with three piece fish and chips. The staff was super helpful gave me extra sauce and said that's a staple and I was sure to like it. Got it to go food came out quickly and well packaged. Walked home sat down to eat opened it up and it looked amazing. I ate everything fries were great fish amazing perfect breading crunchy not greasy and too heavy. The Fish District doesn't specialize in just poke - there are a variety of other things to grub on. However, the poke was great! Very fresh, large chunks of fish, and I liked that there wasn't many options to customize your bowl, however, the seaweed, rice, and cucumbers the poke bowls come with were marinated very well. For a small, it's $8.50, and a large, $10.50. I got to-go, and the service, ordering, and packaging were all great. Only thing I'd recommend is a recycling bin in-store for the plastic water cups and the plastic to-go containers. read more

Here we go again.....first I will start off with why I voted 2 stars instead of 5! This has happen to me too many times lately! My purchase receipt totals $43.10 and today I check my bank register, cause I'm off by an even measly $3, but why?! Someone added themselves a $3 tip ($46.10). A buck or two, I know, I would normally not budge, but it's so DISHONEST!! Same occurrence happen when I picked up a to-go order late last year from another establishment (San Marcos burger joint) and they gave themselves just under a $3 tip. Unless I get some type of stellar service upon driving over and picking up our food, I never leave a tip or else we would never be able to eat out at places such as Fish District. Although, when service is provided at the restaurant, of course, tipping is never an issue and we are always so generous with good service! This was our 1st time trying out this place, and no complaints with the food, it was delicious! Had 2 Traditional Mahi Mahi tacos, 1 Baja Salmon Taco, Spring Salad and some sides and all did not disappoint. However, if I do ever decide to return, I will have my husband come or just pay cash. I have my receipt and reported this place to my bank and other agencies because I'm tired of this type of behavior!! It's always one employee...not so much to blame the entire establishment. This is my third time here and the food and service have been consistently awesome. The outside of the fish is crunchy while the inside is fresh and flaky. There is a lot of hustling and bustling in the restaurant with the lunch crowd running in and out. But the flock of people can be easily ignored when you pop a tender piece of beer-battered cod dipped in their caper mayo with added malt vinegar and lemon juice into your mouth. For this visit, I also ordered an ahi tuna poke bowl salad to see how it compared to the previous poke places I have tried. The quality was just as good as what I've experienced at the other establishments. The only reason why I didn't rate this 5 stars is that the portions were not as generous compared to the last time I was here. The fish shrank in size. This is a great spot, just be prepared to take time to find parking and wait in line during the lunchtime hour during the work week. I visited here for the second time today and the food is delicious. You can really have any type of fish you want served any style; bowl, plate, salad, wrap, etc. Today I chose the catch of the day plate, I went with the salmon. With the plate you can have 2 sides, I went for the sautéed vegetables and the asparagus and everything was delicious! My friend enjoyed the ahi pole bowl which also looked good, I might have to try that next time that I'm there. Small spot, more of a quick lunchtime spot vs somewhere that you'd go on a Weekend evening. They have seating both inside and outside, several choices on their menu and the staff is friendly. Came here to pick up some food to go! Fish District is about a ten minute drive from my workplace so I called as I was leaving to place my order. Fish District is located in a small shopping plaza with a grocery store and a few other small eateries (The Cravory cookies is right next door!!!) so parking was ample and easy. I ordered the spring salad ($6) and added salmon(+$5) as well as a bowl of the clam chowder. The salad was delicious! It came with a sweet mustard sort of a vinaigrette, the veggies they used tasted really fresh, and the salmon was cooked to perfection. It was also a decent portion for the price! Definitely will order again. The clam chowder was a bit of a miss for me. I wanted something creamy and comforting because of the rain and it had a strange tangy taste to it. It wasn't terrible or inedible, just not up my alley palette wise. This review is long overdo as my family has been enjoying the food here for the last several years. We eat here weekly, we literally crave it. Thank you for serving high quality food that is both simple and inventive (sauces are addictive!). Nice sized potions at a reasonable price. This is unfortunately a bit of a rarity these days, so when a business executes on "quality" and "value" as flawlessly as you do, it does not go unnoticed by customers. Every item on the menu is fresh, well-prepared and inventive in some way. If you like NE clam chowder you must try a cup. Perfect consistency and they don't skimp on the clams, potatoes, etc. , Like anyone born and raised in SoCal, I consider myself a bit of an "expert" on fish/shrimp tacos - and the tacos here do not disappoint. Dare I say they are better than the Brig? I will (sorry Brig). Try them "coastal style" served with their super fresh mango salsa and spiced crema sauce - muy delisioso. My new favorite is the blacked mahi bowl (not exactly on the menu but they will sub mahi for ahi). Best fish bowl in San Diego. SO, SO fresh tasting and drizzled with another addictive sauce - their wasabi aioli. A symphony of flavors that makes my heart sing - seriously. Poki bowl is on point (I like mine "traditional" with a side of "spicy" mayo), and if you're not in the mood for seafood try the skirt steak bowl or tacos (My son's fav). And to round things out they have a great selection of beers on tap (nice local ipas), and even dessert (bread pudding with whiskey sauce - be still my beating heart). Poor Rubio's. I'm sure it's hard being so close to such an awesome taco joint like this place. My hubs and I were stoked by all the options and freshness of the food. The updated, clean interior keeps this smaller space feeling open and inviting. Definitely well equipped with a nice staff that gave some good recommendations. Very tasty with a few tweaks. The brioche bun is pretty bready and sweet, more like a Hawaiian bun. Even grilled the bun top stood about 1.5" thick. I was expecting a soft savory bun.The salmon burger was delicious but it wasn't a burger but a grilled salmon sandwich. The white clam chowder was delicious also , but not served hot but warm.
