We tried Fish Boon looking for a different sushi place in the area. Restaurant is newer with a mellow decor and atmosphere. Had a variety of rolls and an appetizer of toro tartare. Rolls wise had rainbow spider, yellowtail mania and bachata crunch. Of the 3 yellowtail mania was my favorite. Sadly bachata crunch just didn't do it for us and had a weird texture and flavor. The toro appetizer was really good. A couple highlights was the hamachi kama and cucumber salad. Loved those pickled cucumbers. Drinks wise they had a good selection of drinks, sake, wine and soju. We had soju which was pretty typical for most local sushi places that was good. Service was ok but not great. We sat at the counter. The tables get much better service and felt like content was an afterthought. Overall not sure I would go back unless I happened to be really close. Not worth the hype at all. Even with an advance reservation, we were stuck on a long waitlist. When we were finally led to the bar, our seats were covered in bakery crumbs. Staff didn't bother cleaning them or welcoming us--my husband had to clean the area and rearrange the chairs himself. The overall service and management were extremely poor. Two of the staff members seemed completely exhausted and were outright unfriendly. When we ordered drinks, they told us they had no cup holders available. Worse, when I pointed out a fly at our table, the employee just nonchalantly suggested we move to a table near the restroom hallway or outside--ruining our special celebration after we specifically reserved bar seating. Been here a few times, all great experiences. The staff is always moving, it shows they are a team; our server was Ryan. Ryan is professional, personable, timely and courteous. The food is great now, the fish is frozen as are most sushi places but you really can't tell. Today we got Steak Teriyaki, Salmon Teriyaki, DelMar & Albacore sushi rolls and dessert. The hamachi toro was incredible. Buttery, soft & so fresh. The tuna rolls were also nice, the sushi rice was made very well & I appreciated the attention to detail on the plating. I wasn't a huge fan of the cucumber salad, I prefer a traditional thinly sliced cucumber salad over this chunky one. However presentation was lovely, and the dressing was delicious. I ordered takeout from here for the first time last week. It was super easy to order, and when I arrived, it was ready to go. The takeout bags look way nicer than what you see at other restaurants. For food, I went with the Misaki roll, and the Torrey Pines roll, they were both really good - super fresh fish, and flavorful combinations. Misaki roll - inside has snow crab, spicy tuna, avocado, and cucumber, and outside had bluefin tuna, and tobiko. Torrey pines - snow crab, avocado and shrimp tempura inside, with salmon outside. We've now dined here several times, and each visit somehow keeps getting better and better. The menu is extensive, innovative, and beautifully executed, while the sake selection is truly spectacular. Standouts absolutely include their salads, specials, sashimi, sushi, and especially their fresh uni, which is consistently some of the best in the area. Their uni and wagyu pairings are absolutely magnificent. Yum! The sake program here also deserves special recognition, with several excellent Daiginjos to choose from along with beautifully curated tasting flights. What truly elevates Fish Boon, however, is the staff and service. Everyone is warm, knowledgeable, welcoming, and genuinely passionate about the food they serve. What we ordered: * Egg Rolls: Delicious. Lightly fried and very tasty. * Chicken Hibachi: They accidentally brought steak instead of chicken. The diner didn't want to wait for a replacement and accepted the steak, but found it chewy and didn't enjoy it as much. * BBQ Ribs: Tender, tasty, and a bit salty. They initially brought miso soup instead of the included salad, but corrected it quickly. * Nijugo Sashimi Platter: Fresh and very good. The salmon in particular stood out. * Seaweed Salad: Good. * Sushi Rice Bowl (side): Good. Overall, we enjoyed our dinner. We had such a lovely dinner here! We were running an hour ahead of our reservation, but they were kind enough to seat us immediately. It's not easy to find a place where the adults can enjoy a great vibe while the kids are happy, but this hit the mark. The fresh sushi and sashimi were delicious, and having hot plate options for the kids was a lifesaver. Everything we ordered especially the Toro tartare, was perfection. ​The real star of the night, though, was our server, Anthony. Beautiful restaurant, awesome decor, wonderful servers, thoughtful lighting, and fun atmosphere. We've heard sooo much about Fish Boon and couldn't wait to try it. We sat at a cute table and were lucky to get a seat without a reservation (it was 5pm on a Sat). The table had a cute personal light on it - I need a couple of these! My absolute favorite thing about the night was the little purse holder they put next to my chair (see my pic). It was SUPER cute and SO smart! It's the little things! First came out a dinner salad. It was just lettuce and a drizzle of dressing - no carrots, no slivered beets etc ... it was ok. Funny, I usually LOVE the starter salads at sushi restaurants. This was just underwhelming. We got the veggie tempura for a starter - I was impressed at the amount on the plate as well as all the different vegetables. They were really yummy. I chose the Miso Black Cod ($33), which the waiter says was a great choice and really good. He also said it takes a bit longer to prepare (to me, that means 'Get ready, this is gunna be GOOD!') Well, I was actually pretty disappointed, especially for the price (and time). I think my expectations were too high. On the good side: the texture was really really lush (melted in your mouth), but it had no taste (even with the lemon wedge) and I found myself dipping it in soy sauce/wasabi over and over just to get my taste buds a rise. It came on top of four asparagus, which definitely needed more salt (and char marks?) as well. They were just 'eh'. The cubed potatoes had no flavor AT ALL. I was super bummed - I ate 2 then stopped, just not tasty. So sad. My husband had the steak teriyaki. It was very impressive looking with literally a pile of juicy steak atop a mound of cabbage. I had one piece of his and was quite disappointed - it didn't have much flavor and had me looking for the salt (only soy sauce on the table). I didn't have another piece, wasn't worth the calories unfortunately. For dessert we had the Mango Strawberry Cake. It was very cute and pretty tasty. We also got the Fried Ice Cream. I had seen a picture on Yelp - it was the green tea ice cream but ours came out just vanilla. Oh my gosh, it was SO disappointing . The ice cream had no vanilla flavor, it was really blah. And Fried Ice Cream should be freshly FRIED (warm). This was most likely fried hours ago and kept in the freezer. The crust was chilled and didn't have any taste. We ended up eating the ice cream and leaving the 'fried' part. I'm probably tainted by the Mexican fried ice cream, which is always to-die-for. Maybe the Japanese version is just something I don't like. Now I know. So basically, my husband and I have been wanting to come here for weeks and I've heard nothing but great things about this place. The restaurant's always full and I've known a couple friends who have said they've had fantastic food here. I'm not sure what happened tonight and I'm so sad that I didn't like it as much as I was expecting. I love tasty, flavorFUL food and I just felt like the dishes we had just didn't meet our expectations. Fish Boone needs to up the ante. They needed more salt, more flavoring and more love. I had the chirashi bowl along with some fatty tuna nigiri. The chirashi bowl not only looked amazing, but tasted just as good. It came with nice, thick slices of salmon, tuna, yellowtail, and albacore, plus shrimp and some roe. All of the fish was incredibly fresh and high quality. Tamago is usually an afterthought, but even that was surprisingly good. I enjoyed the chirashi bowl so much that my son and I came back the very next night. Fish Boon is a great place for fresh and yummy sushi. We came in on a weekday later in the day where there wasn't many parties inside. The interior is very nice and loved the decorations. The food and drinks were great but the service was super slow. We were tucked in a corner so our server probably did not see us but we made eye contact many times and he never made the effort to come and check in. We asked for the check and it took 10 minutes until I decided to stand up and pay for it at the front desk. They also charged us 10 dollars for a bottle of water which they never mentioned. The karage was delicious and crispy. The batter was light and chicken juicy. They had many options for rolls as well. The ones we chose had great quality in the fish and loved the spin they put on them. I would probably come back only for takeout. The service was unbearably slow and it felt like they were purposely ignoring us only. There were other parties being taken care of multiple times while we were just waiting. read more

We looked at the menu quickly and promptly ordered some small appetizers for the kiddo, who was super hungry: gyoza and a California roll. He ended up choosing tempura udon as his main. We had two of their summer specials-hamachi and salmon. We also ordered some sashimi fish: hotate, king salmon, salmon belly, uni, ikura and Spanish mackerel, Oo-toro and chu-toro. Sashimi quality was inconsistent at best. Kiddo loved his udon, so that was a win. Server was pleasant and young, but she didn't seem to know the Japanese names of the fish, and ended up looking at the menu in order to know what to order. The restaurant itself is beautiful. Plenty of parking as it is located in a strip mall. Just wish the food matched the luxe ambiance. read more

I came here for my birthday lunch. They had my name and happy birthday sign on our table when we arrived. The ladies who served us were very welcoming, pleasant, helpful and attentive. The chefs behind the bar were incredible food artists. The decorations were very modern Japanese. You know it's a good Japanese restaurant when you see Japanese clientele. I loved that! I had a refreshing pink cocktail with cranberry juice in it and my husband got a Mimosa with a frozen rose shaped orange juice. His drink had a side of champagne to add when he needs more. Both drinks were delicious and works of art. We ordered... Toro Tartare Albacore carpaccio Fantasy roll Crispy rice with Spicy Tuna Everything was fresh and perfectly prepared. Not only were they visually appealing, they were ALL little bites of Heaven. I'm so glad that this restaurant is close to home. I will definitely be back regularly. For food this perfect, it wasn't overpriced like other famous restaurants which serve you less food at a higher price. The restrooms were clean. They do have seating outside as well. So when the weather cools down, we'll most likely be back with our dog after his walk at the park down the street. If you're looking for authentic Japanese cuisine, you must try this restaurant. My husband and I had dinner here on a Saturday evening. We didn't have reservations, but we came at a good time to be able to sit at the counter. The seats were plush like little love seats. I was given a small seat for my backpack purse. (I've only had this happen to me in Vegas once.) We ordered miso soup, the Gami, Fantasy, and Torrey Pines, but got the Del Mar instead of the Torrey Pines. (We realized it when we looked at the menu to order a second one and I had photos I took of our order to compare). They corrected the error. Ironically, the Del Mar was a delicious error and was our favorite. Service was excellent and food came quickly (which is a good thing since the place got packed rather quickly so they got to turn tables fast). Ambiance was nice. The noise was average, but you're able to take to the person you came with and they can hear you. There's also outdoor seating. A party of 2 to 4 seems to be the best for the seating. Parking was busy, but we managed to find parking by Sprouts/CVS which isn't far. Tip: make reservations if you can before going. read more

My coworkers and I had a great night at Fish Boon. We rolled deep with about 20 people and sat in the outdoor patio. I got a peak into the restaurant when I needed to use the bathroom and noted the decor and ambiance. Overall a nice restaurant. Wait staff were friendly and attentive. We also kept the kitchen busy with order after order, but the food kept flowing. They were on top of it. I couldn't keep track of the things we ordered. There were several rolls, tempura, hamachi kama, sashimi, desserts, etc. I even ordered a couple of nigiri including saba and aji for myself. We arrived when they said it would be ready. They never said they could NOT process our order. We waited 45 minutes for our order. Never got it!!! We've been here a few times since the soft opening, and overall it has usually been a very good experience in terms of food quality, service, and ambiance. That's why yesterday was a bit disappointing. The service felt less attentive than usual, the miso soup arrived after the sushi, and the Miso Cod had quite a few bones in it. We mentioned the cod issue to our server twice, and while she said she would speak to the manager, there was never an apology or any attempt to address the situation. The Oyster Rockefeller alone is worth the visit -- perfectly rich with butter, olive oil, lemon, mozzarella, and parsley. It's one of those dishes you start thinking about the next day. The tuna tostada is another standout -- incredibly fresh tuna topped with crispy skin, serrano peppers, tomatoes, onions, and a creamy cilantro sauce that ties everything together. So flavorful and just the right amount of heat. The toro tartare is also fantastic, and honestly, all of their sushi tastes exceptionally fresh. We also tried the miso black cod, which was delicious -- tender, buttery, and cooked perfectly. There was decent crowd on a friday lunch and I can see why, the interior is beautiful and the plating is great and service was quick and fast. Ordered the 10pc sushi combo and tried their king salmon roll. Both were great. King salmon roll was slightly bit heavy on the sesame oil but it was still good, i'd probably try a different roll next time.
