    Fujisan Sashimi Salad
    Andy B.

I received a recommendation from one of my friends to come here as she loved the ambiance. Her instagram stories looked quite promising so I was looking forward to the place. Upon arrival, one waitress rushed to the entrance and bumed into another customer. No apologies were given and the family did not appear too pleased. What a wonderful start! In times of COVID I understand that places would limit you to a maximum of 2 hours service. I was aware of this upon booking. And upon confirmation of reservation, sitting down (for each and every guest), halfway through the meal and about 15 minutes before the end, which I will get back to. It was quite a cloudy and rainy day so not much natural light came in to the dining area so the place was quite dark: some electronic candles lit up the place greatly when it was 7 PM, but that did not last for long with the gloomy skies. I started with the Salad which was a delectable start to the evening: a fine balance of vinaigrette and delicious veggies. The sashimi was okay and the cut was kind of lack luster fresh-out-of-the supermarket packaging style. Overall, it was good. The tartare was to die for. They both had their strengths and it was hard to say which one is better. We also ordered a side of fries (not pictured) and the truffle mayo that came with it was amazing. The oysters were good: we liked them. It's hard to fail oysters. The maki rolls were a bit disappointing as they lacked some harmony and it just felt like a bite of a corner street poke bowl. We gave them a second chance and went for the Sumo Roll and the Sublime (we ate them too fast!). A notch higher than our poke bowl bites, but that's about it: severely overpriced in my opinion. We went for another salad because the taste of the first one left us begging for more. As we begun to dig into our salad this is where the stars started dropping off: We were first prompted by a young lady that it has been 2 hours and we should hurry up and leave. We politely told the staff that we should be finishing any time now and give us a bit of time. Afterwards, shortly after, a second employee, quite the authoritative figure he was, approached us from the back and basically told us to pack it up and leave in midst of our conversation. We felt like we had commited a crime against humanity: he was very intimidating. After a little bit of argumentation from both side, we had no choice but to leave as they urgently needed the table for 8 (we occupied half the table). Funny thing is that the other half of the table appeared to be in no rush and was told nicely about the policy, which they kindly brushed it aside as they took their time to enjoy their drinks. They sat down at around the same time as us. We got out of the restaurant after paying for our bill totalling up to 300$ and stood a few minutes to discuss abiut our frustration with some travellers from Toronto who were excited for a Fish Bone experience. We were quite frank and honest: we suggested some place else as the food was overpriced and mediocre at best, and with a service applicable to retail closing times. After conversing for about 25 minutes with this young couple, one of our friends noted that the table next to us was still seated and appeared to be in no rush to leave. All in all, I believe that a place like this attempts to keep itself afloat in the cutthroat environment of the old port by having a good reputation online via their marketing tactics which instead should be invested in proper service. I guess they really don't care about customers returning as they are basically being carried by tourists who superficially heard of Fish Bone. Needless to say, I won't be stepping foot here for a second time as I believe I can get as good food for, not only a fraction of the price, but rather a quasi-reasonable level of service and decency. Oh yes, also, one of our friends came late and said that his friends were already seated, but the staff was very dismissive simply because he forgot the name of who the reservation was under. I'll spare the snotty and rude remarks from this review, but I guess this was a hint to a terrible night of tragedies.

Bad 2 da Bone @fishbonemtl is the new badass upscale seafood supper-club in old-port. Jacky was feeling it in the nautical interior with the club vibe & the DJ makin' it pop. Service was impeccable! There is a sea of waiters. They also have coat check & valet but parking is a nono. Jacky had the tiger shrimp, spicy tuna crispy rice, salmon tartar, the rockn rolls, burrata salad, grilled octopus , blue cod with green string beans, filet mignon, asparagus, sautéed mushrooms, fries & drinks of course. The portions are relatively small but the food was well above the supper-club standard. Jacky got seasick when he saw the bill. Worth a shot if the tide is high. Follow @JackyEatsMtl

Went there with my brother and sat at the bar. Bartender/server whose name escapes me (Eric? Tall dude with curly hair and a stache) poured excellent cocktails, was extremely knowledgeable about the wine and food and kept our glasses full. We ordered the seafood tower, the Crab toast, and the octopus. They were all obscenely good. Good bottle of wine and too much amaro at the end. Got to meet Chuck Hughes. He was super nice and fun to chat with. The rest of the staff, although not directly "responsible" for us, were taking care of business. Helping each other, making others aware of what is needed at other tables, and all trying their very best to make everyone's night as wonderful as possible. We were shown to our table, which was near the entrance in the perfect spot. I loved how they have a curtain at the entrance, so that although it felt like -20 with the windchill, we didn't notice once when people entered or exited. Our waitress introduced herself right away and took our cocktail orders. When she delivered our drinks, she explained how the chef's tasting menu worked and left us for a few minutes to decide which option we would like. We chose 'tier 3' which included a pasta course and extra caviar. Everything we had was amazing, from the seafood tower, to the beef carpaccio, to the hanger steak. It was so much food, we thought we would all burst by the end. The waitress was outstanding and was completely engaged with us throughout the evening. She added so much to our experience. We opted for the wine pairings and she gave us 3 wines as well as an amaro at the end. All in all, it was a meal to remember with a price tag of just under $2,000. Well worth it. We highly recommend this for a special occasion dinner.

Upon our hotel's concierge recommendation, we went to listen to some jazz and have some good food at Modavie, and were blown out of the water. We didn't think we needed reservations for a Monday night but we got there and it was packed. They made space for us at the bar and we ordered. The band was amazing and we were told there's a larger room upstairs with a different band. Now for the food: spectacular all around. We ordered poutine with lamb, the chicken and the salmon. I expected it to be good because everything in Montreal up to now had been great, and for a first time poutine taster, I was a bit apprehensive but OMG was it insane good! The fries were cooked to perfection, the sauce was like no gravy I've ever tasted before and the lamb melted in your mouth faster than the cheese curds. For my first time, it feels like all downhill from there. How can we top it?! With delicious salmon and chicken dancing on the palate. All that while listening to the most angelic sounds coming from the vocalist of the band made our experience the very best of Montreal. Modavie is now on my must-do list. I will definite be back.

The server also allowed me to sample the wine first before pouring which I really liked. However we are left feeling conflicted. While we were happy with the meal and service the price we were charged at the end was a surprise. We chose this location and not the nearby Portuguese place that we had originally planned because we had learned about the $59 "Happening Gourmand" meal. I know wine is not included along with gratuity. But nowhere on the menu did it mention that for the main course if you choose the steak it will cost an additional $20. If I had known that I would have had the fish. So just be certain on what you are paying for and being charged because this was very sneaky and wasn't told about the price difference until the bill arrived. As much as they were meticulous with the cleanliness of the table, I feel the follow up for drinks while we waited for our food should've been more frequent. Had it been more frequent? We probably would've ordered more beverages while we waited for our food. Once our food finally did arrive it wouldn't say it was anything outstanding nothing memorable that makes me feel like I'd like to come back. Pics and reviews looked great, so we made plans to dine here during our penultimate night in the city. Barroco is located in Old Montreal, right on Rue Saint-Paul. The exterior has really charming curb appeal, and upon entry we were greeted by the same. This isn't a large restaurant, arranged with tables and a few booths throughout the space and a bar on the back wall that serves as a focal point. The vibes were on - the restaurant was tastefully decorated with a mix of old-fashioned fixtures, stone walls, and earth tones. The restaurant was quite lively - the vibes were on. Their drink menu is quite creative; we actually started our evening at the bar while we were waiting for our table and the bartender made some great suggestions - both cocktails I had were really good. The food menu is mostly French inspired; it wasn't extensive but they had a good variety of creative dishes. We decided on two starters - the brioche and the octopus salad. The brioche was fine, it came as one roll with a side of seasoned butter. It was a little on the dry side, and the butter wasn't very flavorful. The octopus salad was much better; the octopus was sliced and arranged on top of a ratatouille which provided a good complement of flavors and textures. For my main I got the OG braised beef. The beef was almost pot-roast style, seasoned with maple and aged balsamic sauce and paired with truffled celery root purée. This was delicious - the beef was super tender, and the sauce provided great flavor. The puree was an awesome side - the entire trip was super comforting and familiar while also being new and interesting. We decided to get two desserts - the madeleines and the olive oil cake. The former were baked fresh and came with a side of chocolate pudding and salted caramel, while the latter came with whipped cream and coached pears. Both were good, but I preferred the madeleines; the warm sponge paired with the chocolate and caramel was a great finisher to the meal. Service was great - everyone from the host to the bartender to our waiter made us feel welcome; they definitely elevated the experience. Overall, I had a great time at Barroco; the food, vibes, and service were all on point. I would definitely consider returning the next time I'm in Montreal.
