    Fujisan Sashimi Salad
    Andy B.

I received a recommendation from one of my friends to come here as she loved the ambiance. Her instagram stories looked quite promising so I was looking forward to the place. Upon arrival, one waitress rushed to the entrance and bumed into another customer. No apologies were given and the family did not appear too pleased. What a wonderful start! In times of COVID I understand that places would limit you to a maximum of 2 hours service. I was aware of this upon booking. And upon confirmation of reservation, sitting down (for each and every guest), halfway through the meal and about 15 minutes before the end, which I will get back to. It was quite a cloudy and rainy day so not much natural light came in to the dining area so the place was quite dark: some electronic candles lit up the place greatly when it was 7 PM, but that did not last for long with the gloomy skies. I started with the Salad which was a delectable start to the evening: a fine balance of vinaigrette and delicious veggies. The sashimi was okay and the cut was kind of lack luster fresh-out-of-the supermarket packaging style. Overall, it was good. The tartare was to die for. They both had their strengths and it was hard to say which one is better. We also ordered a side of fries (not pictured) and the truffle mayo that came with it was amazing. The oysters were good: we liked them. It's hard to fail oysters. The maki rolls were a bit disappointing as they lacked some harmony and it just felt like a bite of a corner street poke bowl. We gave them a second chance and went for the Sumo Roll and the Sublime (we ate them too fast!). A notch higher than our poke bowl bites, but that's about it: severely overpriced in my opinion. We went for another salad because the taste of the first one left us begging for more. As we begun to dig into our salad this is where the stars started dropping off: We were first prompted by a young lady that it has been 2 hours and we should hurry up and leave. We politely told the staff that we should be finishing any time now and give us a bit of time. Afterwards, shortly after, a second employee, quite the authoritative figure he was, approached us from the back and basically told us to pack it up and leave in midst of our conversation. We felt like we had commited a crime against humanity: he was very intimidating. After a little bit of argumentation from both side, we had no choice but to leave as they urgently needed the table for 8 (we occupied half the table). Funny thing is that the other half of the table appeared to be in no rush and was told nicely about the policy, which they kindly brushed it aside as they took their time to enjoy their drinks. They sat down at around the same time as us. We got out of the restaurant after paying for our bill totalling up to 300$ and stood a few minutes to discuss abiut our frustration with some travellers from Toronto who were excited for a Fish Bone experience. We were quite frank and honest: we suggested some place else as the food was overpriced and mediocre at best, and with a service applicable to retail closing times. After conversing for about 25 minutes with this young couple, one of our friends noted that the table next to us was still seated and appeared to be in no rush to leave. All in all, I believe that a place like this attempts to keep itself afloat in the cutthroat environment of the old port by having a good reputation online via their marketing tactics which instead should be invested in proper service. I guess they really don't care about customers returning as they are basically being carried by tourists who superficially heard of Fish Bone. Needless to say, I won't be stepping foot here for a second time as I believe I can get as good food for, not only a fraction of the price, but rather a quasi-reasonable level of service and decency. Oh yes, also, one of our friends came late and said that his friends were already seated, but the staff was very dismissive simply because he forgot the name of who the reservation was under. I'll spare the snotty and rude remarks from this review, but I guess this was a hint to a terrible night of tragedies.

Bad 2 da Bone @fishbonemtl is the new badass upscale seafood supper-club in old-port. Jacky was feeling it in the nautical interior with the club vibe & the DJ makin' it pop. Service was impeccable! There is a sea of waiters. They also have coat check & valet but parking is a nono. Jacky had the tiger shrimp, spicy tuna crispy rice, salmon tartar, the rockn rolls, burrata salad, grilled octopus , blue cod with green string beans, filet mignon, asparagus, sautéed mushrooms, fries & drinks of course. The portions are relatively small but the food was well above the supper-club standard. Jacky got seasick when he saw the bill. Worth a shot if the tide is high. Follow @JackyEatsMtl

We were seated at a lovely table for two by a window. The service at first was a bit slow, but that was understandable given how busy the restaurant was. Our server, Yan, was incredibly personable. He had excellent suggestions for dinner. We each started with cocktails, and enjoyed the ambiance. There was a live band, but we were in a different room. It wasn't loud like you would expect. 5/5 service. Beef Tartare: 5/5. This was an excellent start. The appetizer sizing was a little small for two people. If you want a little more, I'd recommend the entree size. It comes with fries. But it was delicious. The crostini's that came with it were a little overpowering, but the tartare itself was delicious. Duck Confit: 5/5. This duck was INCREDIBLE. Perfectly cooked, crispy skin, tender and juicy flavor. An incredible sauce. Delicious veggies and potatoes. The only thing I did not like about this dish was how quickly we ate it! Dessert (not pictured): 5/5. We had a chocolate pyramid with hazelnuts and chocolate mousse. Delicious. Be sure to put Modavie on your Montreal dining list!

I do recommend making a reservation on open table prior to coming. Here is what I think of the food: Seasoning is generally saltier but not too overly. Escargot or the snails is yummy. It comes with the option of cheese on top. Dressed heavy with olive oil and garlic. They remove the shell so it makes it approachable if you were nervous about trying. Cheese & Charcuterie board is as what you imagined. It can't go wrong. Rack of Lamb was good. I do recommend highly. It comes with our 4-5 bones worth of protein with potatoes & veggies. Lost track of how many bones because it was eaten so fast. Duck confit was average. Let me explain, duck was average but the amount of spinach I gotten and how potatoes on the plate was good. Sides out shine the protein here. Side of Foie Gras was perfect because I was worried about having too much food. It did come on a small plate because it's a side dish and it was fatty and salty. Intermission was the best cocktail of the night. Fruity with a star anise on top so you smell it while drinking it because it was so close to your nose. Jazz District was okay. Overall, I do think this restaurant site fairly between 4&5 stars. Do try it. I would come back for special occasions and it's not an every night meal.

The food was excellent, well prepared, and beautifully plated. For a steakhouse they had some nice lighter options, seafood and veggies included. Caesar salad was fresh and delicious, the orzo with asparagus puree, walnuts, and apricot was very creamy, well balanced and flavorful. I loved this dish. My husband's flank steak was perfectly cooked to medium rare and very tender. Service was good but I watched our beer sitting on the bar for a while... needed to remind our server we ordered a beer (and it has been sitting there staring at us the whole time).... I think it may have been our writers first day? Not a biggie but I was done with my appetizer by the time beer came. More than enough food for the 6 and everything was cooked perfectly- octopus wasn't chewy and the meats were super flavorful and tender. They were very accommodating to dietary restrictions as well. Then our appetizer (oysters) arrived but our wine did not. After we watched the adjoining table who arrived after us received their drinks and entrees (but no silverware), I waved down first a busboy and then the maître d', we finally received our warm Sauvignon Blanc that I can only imagine had been sitting at the bar for quite some time. After we finished our wine and our entrees had still not arrived, we asked for the check explaining that we didn't care to wait any longer but instead, after another wait, they brought us our meal. The food was overcooked and barely warm - likely from the extended time under a headlamp and the salad was okay but nothing you couldn't get anywhere else. After hearing his suggestions, I decided on the Snow Crab Cluster paired with a Sirloin, baked potato, and a side of whisky peppercorn sauce. It was a fantastic choice. The steak was cooked perfectly to my liking, the crab was fresh and flavorful, and the whisky peppercorn sauce tied the steak together beautifully. We ordered the Paloma mocktail which was extra tasty. Starters were the brioche bread that was baked with a crispy top and the herb butter paired very nice. We also got the asparagus and scallops. I was thinking it would be the whole scallop, but it was cut into little pieces and put on top of the asparagus. For the entrees we got the filet and another steak I can't remember the name?? The filet was cooked to absolute perfection, crispy on the inside and so tender and soft on the inside. We got one of each of the sauces as well as the sides. The butter sauce was my favorite. Pics and reviews looked great, so we made plans to dine here during our penultimate night in the city. Barroco is located in Old Montreal, right on Rue Saint-Paul. The exterior has really charming curb appeal, and upon entry we were greeted by the same. This isn't a large restaurant, arranged with tables and a few booths throughout the space and a bar on the back wall that serves as a focal point. The vibes were on - the restaurant was tastefully decorated with a mix of old-fashioned fixtures, stone walls, and earth tones. The restaurant was quite lively - the vibes were on. Their drink menu is quite creative; we actually started our evening at the bar while we were waiting for our table and the bartender made some great suggestions - both cocktails I had were really good. The food menu is mostly French inspired; it wasn't extensive but they had a good variety of creative dishes. We decided on two starters - the brioche and the octopus salad. The brioche was fine, it came as one roll with a side of seasoned butter. It was a little on the dry side, and the butter wasn't very flavorful. The octopus salad was much better; the octopus was sliced and arranged on top of a ratatouille which provided a good complement of flavors and textures. For my main I got the OG braised beef. The beef was almost pot-roast style, seasoned with maple and aged balsamic sauce and paired with truffled celery root purée. This was delicious - the beef was super tender, and the sauce provided great flavor. The puree was an awesome side - the entire trip was super comforting and familiar while also being new and interesting. We decided to get two desserts - the madeleines and the olive oil cake. The former were baked fresh and came with a side of chocolate pudding and salted caramel, while the latter came with whipped cream and coached pears. Both were good, but I preferred the madeleines; the warm sponge paired with the chocolate and caramel was a great finisher to the meal. Service was great - everyone from the host to the bartender to our waiter made us feel welcome; they definitely elevated the experience. Overall, I had a great time at Barroco; the food, vibes, and service were all on point. I would definitely consider returning the next time I'm in Montreal.
