First rate. I specifically chose them as apparently the only steakhouse on the Island grilling on real coal fires. Three of us shared a medium rare 34 Oz Porterhouse and two 2 lb. Maritime lobsters. Pommes Aligo and creamed baby spinach were delightful sides. Cold and grilled shrimp and delicately fried calamari served as appetizers. As my intention was to support Canada and Montreal we chose both white and red Quebec wines (ground $100 each) with the assistance of the knowledgeable sommelier. Desserts were Crème brûlée and crêpes Suzette, both perfect. After dinner drinks and smokes in the sophisticated cigar bar completed the experience. Service was perfect. Unobtrusive and respectful of our privacy, but ever-present to refresh our glasses and attend to our every need. It was a flawless steakhouse experience from start to finish. Last week, while noticing quite a few restaurants were closed for an extra long holiday (which we Americans are not used to) my cousin called Rib-N-Reef and found out to our surprise, they were open, and we were fortunate enough not to need a reservation! When we walked in, noticed the place was fully staffed (right after the holidays) and were immediately greeted by four smiling faces, back to back. From the valet, to the hostess, to the coat checker, to the waiter. After sitting down, the waiter was incredibly polite, and after mentioning it was my first time here, he gave me some great recommendations. After ordering, and before we even got our appetizers, the pre appetizer items (pickle, coleslaw, bread and butter) were absolutely beautiful as far as presentation, and flavor! The pickle was definitely brined specifically for this restaurant, and the bread was one of those shapes you know they had to carefully find, and make sure there were no burnt pieces. On top of that, the butter was this fun shaped flower, which I enjoyed. When it came to sides, the mushrooms were scrumptious, with the perfect amount of sautéing and the mashed potatoes were like eating a cloud (a tasty one at that). The steak? The steak was absolutely perfectly cooked. I ordered medium rare and it was rare in just the right places with a nice searing. The garlic that was to be squeezed on top added a great flavor as well! I have to add two more compliments and a complaint. The decor had me feeling like I was in the godfather (compliment). The sparkling water was quite delicious, (ordered by my companions) which I usually dont like, but.. I may have to call in to ask about what kind it was! The negative item was I was so tired (for when I went) I forgot to order dessert! Overall a fantastic experience, for a place that when I visit Montreal next (in a month or so) I'll be back for more, and this time I will be ordering dessert, and bringing my entire family! read more

One word to describe this restaurant: glamorous. It's got an old school feel with waiters wearing formal attire, a valet service, and the general ambience feeling like you're in a movie. Location wise is very interesting since you're in the Decarie highway area. But it's still packed regardless of the location. It's definitely one of the more expensive steakhouses in Montreal. But everything is cooked perfectly and super mouthwateringly delicious. It's a treat yourself kind of meal. They do have a table d'hôte service which makes it pretty worth it! I tried the filet mignonette with the foie gras and honestly it was incredible. I came in with very little expectations but wow was I blown away by this dish. Service is also very attentive! Last time I came here was over 4 years ago!! Time for a new review ! Came here on a work meeting. Everything was splendid .. just don't understand their valet service and how it's mandatory even though you park 2 seconds away lol.. otherwise everything was perfect. Atmosphere: Excellent ! The place was very clean and elegant. Love coming here!! Service: A1 .. very professional and pleasant. Started with a few cocktails to warm up the mood. I had the piña collada very strong thankfully I like it strong haha. The food was delicious.. we enjoyed the complimentary bread sticks and bread buns with butter I had Rockefeller Oysters as an appi.. yum it was scrumptious ! Enjoyed the Caesar salad for 4. It was a whole show .. the waiter prepared the salad in front of us for everyone to see. It was a cool experience definitely fun to watch!! I tried to stay healthy and clean haha so definitely had to order grilled veggies, asparagus and mushrooms. I had some roast beef as a main and washed it down with more cocktails. (Read as 3.5 out of 5 stars) This place is a throwback to my grandparents' generation when Decarie blvd. was THE place to be. While those days are LONG gone, you can still find yourself a decent meal here. Priced substantially higher than Gibbys and even Moishes, this steakhouse aims to portray itself as the height of luxury. The food, while good, can be moderately to obscenely overpriced depending on the menu item. The room was almost 3/4 packed on a Friday night. The clientele here is unique in terms of their demographics. There is very good people watching to be had here. You have a mix of young hustlers with their plastic surgery/trophy appendages, Ville St Laurent importer/exporter types, guys who once did well in the carpeting business, and Dick Tracy villains. You also have regular clientele just trying to enjoy a quiet dinner. Dinner starts with a very nice bread basket, pickles, and coleslaw all free of charge (or should I say included). They more than ding you charging 17$/shrimp in a shrimp cocktail. That would be 68$ plus tax and tip for a 4 shrimp cocktail. The waiter said they were very big. They looked like they were the size of my thumb. Calm down. There are many other examples of ridiculous prices here. A dozen oysters for 54$, 280$ seafood tower, a platter of 3 shrimp, calamari, 3 Rockefeller oysters, some octopus and vegetables for 120$. These dishes must appeal to those who get an ego boost from being able to throw away money just for the fun of it. For a relatively reasonable 32$ price tag, I split the caesar salad for 2 with my brother-in-law. It's a whole dog and pony show prepared table-side. They are essentially making a salad dressing by emulsifying the ingredients in a wooden bowl at the table. It takes about 8 minutes which is a bit awkward if you are trying to have a conversation in the presence of the salad guy. Ultimately, I found the salad tasted overwhelmingly of olive oil. As for capers, anchovies, cheese, bacon, and egg......I'm sure they were all there, but all I could taste was romaine and olive oil. For my main, I had the prime rib and a side of fries which will run you a combined 66$ dollars. The prime rib was absolutely delicious. Served in it's own juices and served medium rare as I requested, I polished off every ounce of the meat with a smile on my face. The plate comes with peas and a yorkshire pudding which was not prepared properly. It was dry and crispy on the outside, but lacked the chewy and moist inner filling that the authentic version of the dish must have. Fries were standard and good. They have valet parking even though the restaurant is literally located IN a parking lot overlooking the scenic Decarie expressway. Finally, in case the company credit card needs a further workout, there is a cigar room where you can light up one of their overpriced cigars to go with your scotch and cognac. Not a bad gig if you can get it. That said, Gibby's reputation as the gold standard for steakhouses in Montreal is still very much intact. read more

We were seated around 8, server seemed very rushed every time he was talking to us, ordered because we were just ready to eat and continue our night (again, out of town-ers celebrating a birthday) we got our food around 9:05PM... we waited over 45 minutes for our food, and they couldn't just tell us "we forgot to put your food order in." Which is bad enough, but the server just could not admit he mad a mistake. His manager had to tell me AFTER I asked. I was furious, my husband's birthday in Montreal and we came out from downtown left our 5 start hotel for THIS?! Food (when we finally got it) was not worth the cost, quality wasn't anything ground breaking, it gave me Outback Steakhouse vibes with a Cigar Lounge. We are from Texas we KNOW steak and beef. This was definitely not quality and not worth it for anyone traveling. To make up for the disaster they give cheap Prosecco and some of the cheapest desserts on their menu. Perfect place for my first meal (ever) in Montreal. Upon arriving, we checked in with the hostesses and got seated right away. Coat check is complimentary but we opted to keep our since we were still chilly from being outside. An assortment of bread, sides of pickles, and some type of Cole slaw arrived on our table right away. I've never seen pickles served at steakhouses before (in the US) so this threw me off :) My husband ordered a gin martini which he enjoyed (he got more later). I started with probably the best lobster bisque I've ever had. I mean there were huge chunks of lobster claw meat in it. I struggled with my spoon to break it down lol. My husband enjoyed his wedge salad with lots of real bacon bits. Later, we shared the tamarind and maple bacon starter and it's not bacon, it's huge chunks of pork belly! Sooooon good! As for entree, I got the "junior cut" rib steak which was huuuuge with truffle butter on top. My husband got the filet mignon. It came with roasted garlic on the side which was delicious but skip this if you're on a first date here ;) We also shared a side of mushrooms which was also delicious. This is a little weird, because I'm writing a review based on what this restaurant was like back in the 1980's, when I was a kid. My mom told me about this steak house, and so she took me there. I forget what I ate, but I most likely had steak, and I'm guessing it was good. This restaurant is on Decarie and has many items on the menu. I looked at the menu recently and it seems pricey, but I'm sure it's worth it. If I ever go to Montreal for a weekend, I want to visit 3 places. The first is this restaurant, the second is the 'Maison Symphonique', or Symphony House, at 'Place des Arts' and the third is Dunn's Famous smoked meat. Student Review: If you got it, go and enjoy. The quality of the meat is very good, it is classy but kind of tight--by that I mean, a waiter was preparing something behind me for the next table over and I could feel the heat of what they were preparing on my bald head. The bathroom is downstairs, if you're 5'10 and over you should duck going down the stairs. It is quite pricey for what you get. I got a ~$43 plate of chicken breasts that came with 2 large slices of pepper (1/4), 1/5 of a cob of corn on a stick and 2 slices of something else but I don't remember what it was. Needless to say, I ordered a side. The side I ordered was Mac n cheese $17 (at the time of writing) and the portion was good for a side dish. The concern is mainly that it just didn't seem/taste like there was much seasoning on the chicken nor the side. But I guess that's just preference given my Caribbean heritage. The waiters explain anything you have questions for but I did hear some snarky remarks/replies in response to another waiter talking about our table. We did not make a fuss about it but will comment here about it in case anyone else has the same experience. Finally, watch out for bookings. Group gratuity is charged for RESERVATIONS of 6 or more according to the waiter I had. Despite being 5, since our reservation was for 6 or more (we had a table for 4 [2|2] and another table that might fight 4) we were charged 18% gratuity. I was going to tip 18% in general because the general service exceeded what I was used to but it's nice to know these things in advance, it seems a little deceiving for us to be told this after our meal. Be upfront! Just because my experience was subpar doesn't mean yours will be, I would say check this place out for yourself because it has potential. But I personally wouldn't recommend it. Worst experience ever ! Starts from the parking lot where I comfortably parked my car and a valet driver tries to hand me a ticket stating this is a valet parking area and I should park further away if I intended to park myself, I guess they do not know the real reasoning behind a valet parking so a client does not want to walk a distance to go to the restaurant.... Then you enter the premises and get these observation looks like who are you , you do not look like a regular here .... Then we where steered to the weirdest seating placement in the restaurant. Over looking at the decor I could not help but laugh it was gauche to say the least, no theme .... Of course as soon as we sat down an Asian well manner lady served as breads and bread sticks etc. then we ordered our meal it was lunch time and really not that hungry my client my really into trying their onion soup and I ordered a simple salad with blue cheese dressing. While waiting for our appetizer festival, the table next to me ordered a Caesar's Salad which apparently is suppose to be prepared by the waiter, but the waiter was as a newbie and was being trained by a senior waiter. This I would probably understand , but when you are in a supposed ritzy restaurant why should the customer be treated like a Guinea Pig and be tested on ... finally after thirty minutes our appetizers arrived , Onion soup was great but what I received shocked moi, two quarters of iceberg lettuce with three cherry tomatoes and microscopic amount of blue cheese . Rib 'N Reef has been around for awhile and caters to a very specific type of clientele. They're well known in my circle of friends as the premiere steakhouse so you'll have to expect to pay the big bucks to enjoy an evening in their establishment. Driving in, I was provided with a valet and coat service and effectively handed off to the hostess who consequently led us to our seating. The establishment is very elegant and aesthetically pleasing. While this may lead to some thinking this location would be a place you'd take a significant other to for a special evening, for reasons I'll share later I'd recommend this establishment more for a client meeting or an anniversary, albeit, if all parties are able to pay for their meals. They also have a cigar lounge, great option for those of you who love that type of stuff. I sadly didn't partake. The menu has a nice variety of options but the one thing that stood out to me is the pricing. It was a little exorbitant even to my budget. How exactly is a 16 oz sirloin steak (New York cut) with no side orders priced at $66? I understand dry-aged USDA prime corn-fed midwestern beef is a quality meat but honestly adding on a much needed side order priced anywhere between $8 to $15 is exaggerated. I opted for the onion rings with aïoli sauce ($9). The sirlon steak was very good but felt they missed the mark with my medium-rare request as it leaned more on rare than I would have liked. The myoglobin oozed out of my steak far too much for my liking, particularly after my steak was resting for some time. Nonetheless, I did enjoy it but what I really enjoyed were the onion rings with aïoli sauce. They were HUGE, with the perfect crispy/saltiness on the outside and chewy flavor on the inside. The aïoli sauce was a nice touch. The meal was wrapped up with one of our many waiters (or the battalion of men in suits we saw standing around) bringing us some hot towels to wash our faces and hands. So fancy! We ordered dessert and I went with their creme brulee and cappuccino. The creme brulee was decent but I felt the creme lacked flavor. The cappuccino was good. One of my dining guests had a burnt souffle. They did opt to waive the cost of it when she brought up her concerns. There was an awkward 5 minute wait while we waited on everyone's plate to come. It's important all drinks and desserts are served at the same time. ... Let's talk about the service and the environment a little. As I mentioned earlier, I feel this location isn't an ideal place you'd take a significant other to for a special evening as it's pretty loud once it gets about half full. Furthermore, anniversaries and client meetings happen and your 1 on 1 dining experience can be somewhat mulled by all that noise. The table beside our had a pair of patrons, sharing a meal between a client and a sales-rep and I literally was able to hear their loud conversation all night long along with all the swear words and childish references to female genitalia and how easy women are in this city. We had many staffers around and I'm sure the ladies at my table would have appreciated if they could have toned down their conversation. Regarding the staff, they are plenty around but somehow my glass of tap water only got refilled once during the entire evening. Very strategic and easily noticed. Particularly how quickly and efficiently they ensured my glass of wine was never empty. Speaking of the wine, we opted for the Chianti Ruffino and it was delicious. Obviously the chianti had a price-tag and the tap water did not. Overall, it was an average experience. The price-tag isn't something I wouldn't say no to on occasion as long as I find value to it, which I felt I didn't. Having a 16 oz steak, a side order of onions shouldn't cost you $80. Real Five Star Dining Five stars are like VD's on Yelp, they spring up everywhere. Home Depot, Wendy's, everywhere but this restaurant is truly five stars. I have eaten here twice, both times were some of my greatest dining experiences to date. The service is beyond reproach, as each waiter tends to a small section and majority of them are on the older side so they've been waiting tables since before you were born. And it's the little things that make this place great. They decant your wine before your food arrives so it aerates well. Everything is prepared table side, salad tossed, Creme bruleed, it is quite a sight. Then there is the Wine list, it's longer than my...well, it's long. They pride themselves on having one of the most vast and stocked wine cellars in the city. The food, like the service, is beyond reproach. My first raw oyster experience occurred here, they were divine. Plump oysters, shucked perfectly, with all appropriate accoutrement and a liqueur that tasted like the Atlantic...ocean, not city. They age their beef, so the connective tissue becomes butter, seasoned with a great Montreal steak spice, the decadence is ridonkulous. Then there is the 16oz Prime Rib en Jus, this is the best piece of meat I have ever had, without question. Side with a Monte Carlo potato, some Quebec asperges and washed down with and '03 St. Supery and you'll be texting St. Peter that you're all good to go. For steak lovers, this is a good place to go to!! The service is sometimes slow but hey, it's not their fault! We Miss Pedro & Johnny...that's why we don't visit as often anymore since they aren't working anymore. In the summer, their roof top terrace is amazing! Valet drivers are like the Mafia. Tried to bully me into their valet service and when I declined, one of them parked a customers car so tight next to mine I had to struggle to squeeze into my vehicle. I severely dented the poor customers passengers side door as he was inside dinning. I am sure the clueless customer was not aware of the valet driver was using his brand new $80,000 Jeep as an act of revenge. The sad part is he paid for the valet parking service. I do not allow anyone to drive my vehicle because it is a company car and that is our policy. Other than running into the Canadian Mafia in the parking lot the food was overpriced for the quality. I would have been better off going to the Longhorn Steakhouse and probably would have saved $80.00 on a better steak. Last Saturday was my second visit to Rib 'N Reef, both times for our wedding anniversary. I must say that the some 15 years in between our visits gave ample time to jack up their prices! Even with a $100 gift card, we had to disburse over $200 for the meal. Hubby took one beer, and that was all the extant of our alcohol consumption for the evening! But... the food was good (probably not $300 good). I had the crab cakes (which comes with a mustard sauce which I did not care for at all) and were really good; mostly crab, not filling! Hubby had the tuna tartar, which is made at the table and was amazing. The lobster tail that came with my steak was cooked perfectly, tender and savory. My steak was good, but, I think hubby can make it if not better, as good as them on the bbq! I like my steak rare, and its a very difficult thing to get in a restaurant; seems like Rib 'N Reef included. It was quite tasty and very tender though. Hubby really enjoyed his NY Strip and garlic mashed potatoes. Finally, I have to admit that their crème brulée is as good as mine... damn it! ;) What really impressed me there though, was the quality of the service. Most of the manly men at our table ordered the roast beef and appeared gleeful at the size and flavour of the great beast that came. I didn't taste it though, too busy cracking tail and high fiving my new pickle friends. Did I mention the bowls of big fat pickles on the table? The Rib 'N Reef is barely even a stumble from the orange line which makes it pretty much perfect in my books already. Came here for a birthday party and our waiter looked like a Latin Gene Simmons so I knew that we were off to a good start. I had the sesame crusted tuna which was done to absolute perfection: I'm talking fall apart in your mouth, amazingness. I had the mashed potatoes as a side and they were tasty as well. Only had a bite of the birthday boy's chocolate cake for dessert but it was completely awesome: not too sweet and had a crunch of something yummy in the middle, no way I could have eaten an entire piece to myself, but the bite was soooo good. My dinner mates ordered lobster (it was fantastic), filet mignon which looked delectable and the roast beef...it was HUGE and they all pretty much polished off their plates. Great wine list with some really unique items, nice ambiance, fantastic service...you will not regret dropping some coin here! read more

I just came back from the Rib n Reef in Montreal with a number of friends who go to this restaurant fairly often. This was my first time. I was very disappointed. However speaking to my friends, they told me that my issues with this place, although well founded, are not typical of the restaurant. For a steakhouse charging the kind of money they do must do a better job with their service. My friends ordered a Cesar salad that is prepared at the table. Well, if prepared at the table, I would expect that the person preparing the salad concentrate on preparing the dish and not multi task with the rest of the staff and instruct others on administrative matters. The same thing happened when my friends ordered 2 Brazilian coffees. The person preparing the coffees was busy with collecting cash from other tables, having some of the wait staff place glasses at a different table, and then stop the "show" and serve the others at our table our regular coffee. They should pay attention to what they are doing and make the experience a nice one. At the end, there was a few mix ups with the bills and it just created to the overall disappointment with the service. Finally, one last comment, my roast beef was luke warm when it was served to me. read more

There is nothing trendy and pretentious about the Rib 'n Reef. It is just good and that's it! Having the Caesar Salad prepared at your table was nothing special, in all honesty, I'd rather the cook do the cooking and the server do the serving, but the taste was amazing. It is really good, really strong (garlic and flavourful), but really good! I had the juniour cut of Prime Rib cooked medium rare. It was perfectly cooked, but I should order medium, as it just is never hot enough for my liking, Still, it was a gorgeous cut of meat. It was served with green peas, which did nothing, but looked right. The beef was tender and I truly enjoyed every bite! I also had a side of garlic mashed potatoes. They were not warm enough and not all that special. I look forward to visiting again! read more

Completely over rated rubbery over priced steaks cooked using a blow torch. When charging $74 for a steak, the least you expect is to have it prepared to your doneness. Wrong. The superb service doesn't make up for how awfull the bone in steaks are here. Once you fight yourself through the harassing valet parking agents you are faced with a pleasant dining experience. Did I mention $19 per shrimp, really? Skip it if you don't have a generous expense account or aren't a millionaire. read more
