Great hot dog sauce! And the fries are perfect!!! Cheap and you won't be disappointed

I just paid $7 for two loaded hot dogs and a small fry. Been going here for 45 years. The meat sauce is changed (again) and now looks like smooth goo and the order of fries was so small compared to what I used to receive that I *counted* how many fries I got. I got 17 fries for my $2.50. Service was not the usual well oiled machine: got my dogs and then fries 5 minutes later... it looked grubbier than normal inside and no familiar faces behind the counter- I'm wondering if the ownership again changed hands which is why things are "off"? My Dad has been taking me here for 20 years for our Dad and daughter time. We always order cheeseburgers with extra fried onions and hot chocolate with tons of whipped cream (no matter the season) and when I was a kid they put the whipped cream can right in front of me and I could have all I wanted. If you are looking for linen napkins and sorbet between courses (you are probably a pretentios jerk) keep driving. 2. The name is MIKE'S HOT DOGS so if eggplant parm is what you crave GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. 3. Mike's is a working man's joint. Where a busy person can grab a bite to eat for their lunch hour. You sit at the long formica counter and wait to served. Sometimes it may take a bit longer then you want. However my recommendations are two hot dogs all the way: which includes onions and meat sauce. Between the crunch and bite of the onions, zippy meat sauce,and perfectly plump hot dog is a place known as paradise. Add to that a side of onion rings, crispy, hot from the fryer, they are a joy to consume. Lastly is you have time get a steak sandwich with the works: cheese, onions, peppers, tomato sauce. Now it's not fair to Morrette's up the block (Which specializes in steak sandwiches) but Mike's does amazing things with it. It's hearty with the peppers and onions, meaty, and gooey from the cheese. "Mike's FIRST PLACE" the sign calls out to me from the road, early on a Sunday morning. I'm hungry, and I see the parking lot is full, so there must be a reason, right? I also catch a smaller sign saying they do breakfast; "flapjacks, omlettes" the sign says. I have never been here before, but I have a good idea what to expect: a local greasy spoon, the type of which used to crowd the American landscape, but which has all but disappeared these past 20 years due to the advent of super-highways and Dunkin Donut / Starbucks culture. - The small parking lot was fairly crowded, but I found a spot and moseyed on inside. Exactly what I expected - a long diner-type counter with plenty of stools, some small 2-person tables lining the other wall with a bit more seating down at the far end. Fast working slightly-grumpy women behind the counter, slinging eggs and hash with a speed practiced to perfection lo these many years. Sat down and glanced at the menu - it's posted on the wall at the either ends of the counter. Ordered the special. Got coffee - came in these small sized mugs, but it was good. Watched them cook - it's pretty entertaining. One thing that kind of grossed me out - but something you expect to see here - the lady working the grill reached up with the spatula and flicked a power switch up inside the vent above to turn it on, then went back to flipping eggs and flapjacks with the same spatula. Hm. It was funny to see and slightly stomach-turning. Still, it didn't keep me from cleaning my plate: the special is 2 flapjacks, lots of bacon, and eggs however you like. Quality is about what you'd expect, but given the atmosphere, they taste great. Not the cleanest place. And not a lot to choose from. But when you're trying to dry out from all the Guinness you've been consuming at the Irish 2000 Festival for 2 days straight, it's perfect. read more

Being a newcomer to the area, we were lured into this establishment simply by the greasy spoon appeal, and of course, the ridiculous, albeit unique statues out front. I'm a big fan of hotdogs, chili dogs, and the like, so I really didn't think I could go wrong. Well, guess what.? I did. For starters, while there is a nice, long counter, there clearly isn't enough space to accommodate our family of four. We were crunched together, elbow to elbow with other diners. We chalked it up to part of the experience and kept a positive attitude. After much debate, I decided to go with the sausage burger with marinara sauce and a side of onion rings. Sausage burger: Meh. Onion rings: Awesome.The server was curt and sassy, which I usually don't have a problem with so long as the service is prompt. Our drinks weren't refilled once, and while our food came out quick, we never saw her again until it was time to cash out. A few weeks later, I thought I'd been a little harsh on my first impression, and decided to give it another go. After all, I hadn't even had their famous "meat sauce dog".. Can't be too quick to judge, right? Well, again.. we ran into the same seating fiasco that we met on our first visit. We made do, and ordered up some meat sauce dogs and of course, those fabulous onion rings. We had the same shitty service, (from a different server this time), and again received NO refills for our drinks. The meat sauce was kind of nasty, I must say. I don't see what the big fuss is. I guess it's a nostalgia thing? I dunno, but I wasn't impressed. Another thing worth mentioning: on my second visit, we witnessed a little argument between a father and his grown son, who happened to be seated practically on top of us at the counter. The argument got heated, and they stepped outside. This was BEFORE we ordered our food, and when we finished, the semi-domestic dispute was STILL carrying on in the parking lot. Really?? I had my two teenage boys with me, and while they are no strangers to hearing profanity, this was unnecessary, and disrespectful to anyone within earshot. Ugh. Get a room, or at least get in your damn car, people! Don't know if I'm going to give it a thrid chance.. if I do, it might just be for takeout.. Also, they do NOT take cards. Bring cash, or you will be directed to Stewart's, as the ATM at Mike's is never functioning properly. read more

Mikes has some of the best hotdogs around. His hotdog chili is out of this world. I just love eating at these old school greasy spoons. There's a reason why they've been around for a loooong time- whenever my family would come to town this is one place they always wanted to go. If you like Coney Island dogs you have to give this place a try- it's excellent food and pretty cheap to boot! The food is excellent, the staff is extremely nice but yesterday one of the girls have me my total and it was about $30. Now i have never had a problem in the past several years i have been going there. The girl be hind the counter said your total is $30 and out of $40 and then said tank you and have a nice day, then I said can i get my change and she said I thought you were giving a $12 tip and i said keep after saying can i get it back and she didn't want to give it back, (of course I know why) so abot after several tries i just walked out but i will definitely be back I think she was just having a bad day read more

An institution. My dad first brought me here 55 years ago and I've brought my son a few times. Hot dogs with everything and a cheeseburger with fried onions is my typical order. Sausage from garafalos is used for the sausage sandwiches. Quite good. Service is down to earth and usually quick. The place though could use a good cleansing especially the bathroom. read more

This is exactly what greasy spoons should be. Cleanliness is questionable, bar is worn through, the paper plates leave streaks of grease as they are slid in front of you. The coffee is passable, and the food is exactly what it should be for a price that is dead on. The place hasn't changed since GE was a force in the Electric City. When we get Mike's we have to get the hot dogs with the works. The food comes fast and hot and is always tasty. This is the best solution downtown Schenectady has to the typical fast food places. We're new to the area and have eaten at Mike's a few times. The place is old and needs some spiffing but the staff have always been very nice. I love the little cheeseburgers but the last one I had made me so sick. I know I got food poisoning from the burger. It tasted good but just in a few hours after I got home - you know what happened. I had mentioned to the waitress how I loved the little cheeseburgers and she laughed and said, 'they're pretty good for frozen patties.'
