I went to the Smokehouse Saloon last night for the first time to see a burlesque show. Before the show started, we enjoyed a free game of ping pong (very fun!) and a drink. They had a good variety of flavored liquors and beers. In the midst of reading all the bathroom stall wisdom, I learned they have live music every Thurs-Sun and free darts and pool all day every Sunday. As others have said, it is a bit divey but probably a good place to start your night off before moving on. Though don't mistake dive to equal cheap drinks as one would expect. The prices are the same. It's just more casual and there may be more creepers there to hit on you. But hey, maybe then you can score a free drink! Up to you. Because of the show, the bar had a pretty large crowd. I don't know if it's always like that. The VIP Guests ($20 vs $8) were treated to tables right up front with a free bottle of champagne and cupcakes. Note that the rest of the area is standing room only. No chairs. And it's a two hour show. So keep that in mind before you don your own stilettos. I am actually 8 months prego and was not prepared to stand the whole time but one of the girls sweetly offered me a leftover seat up front that hadn't sold so I got to enjoy front row access and a cupcake! The burlesque girls were creative and had interesting costumes and certainly interesting tassel collections! The MC was a drag queen with the biting wit and humor you would expect. Each girl had her own choreographed routine. One girl was dressed as Freddie Kreuger with dildos for fingers-- that's one I'll never forget! The show was definitely amateur all the way around but props to the Saloon for trying to do something different.

This is the best for folks who like to bring their pups everywhere and I wish I had known sooner. I also heard they have a rockin' weeknight karaoke, and I know my partner and I will be hitting that up at some point in the near future. This is your standard Monroe Ave dive (not the diviest there is but divey nevertheless) and it fits in great with the rest of the Monroe scene. I went with a raspberry vodka soda and it was perfectly strong, made by a super friendly bartender who was attentive to everyone seated. I will for sure be back for drinks with friends when I am in the area (and to try some food!)

Turcotts Taproom got more than a face lift from the days it was Lola's. It got a soul transplant…read more Or maybe a soul merge. Lola's had a great run, and the well known corner real estate on Monroe Ave ( a major conduit to downtown Rochester) has had several past lives. Today's reincarnation is that of Turcotts. Turcotts belong to the same family of tap houses as Oxfords, Magpie's, Murphy's law, and Brass (check out the Yelp reviews). Bye bye to craft martinis and burlesque nights with the scantily dressed and goth-ish lady staff. Enter stage left: mixologists with that gritty-Monroe Ave-Dude! Where have you been my whole life-being. Instant liquid compadre and confidant. Maybe because of the heavy pours, but I'm sticking to my stance of good people good drinks. Prove me wrong. And now a brief history... This multigenerational-"family"-owned network of bars lost a dear and close "family" member when the longtime manager of Oxford's passed away. As an homage to this veteran bar manager the owners approached his family and asked if they could honor the fallen by renaming Lola's after him....or more exactly his family name: Turncott! Hence, Turcotts. Cheers to this! The physical layout of this watering hole has always been a challenge. Not only for the staff but for the patrons as well. It's narrow and doesn't accommodate groups greater than two. So if you're on date night or rocking lower Monroe Ave solo; then be sure give Turcotts some play. The makeover this establishment received is a huge upgrade. Goodbye great dive bar and hello jump off spot. Generous accents of red leather trim with matte black wood trip gives the place a good attempt at being not divvy- almost reminiscent of the British turncoats!...A good checkpoint on any Monroe Ave adventure. The drinks at Turncotts are definitely on par with the neighborhood. Depending on your relationship with the mixologist behind the bar, you're gonna have that off menu specialty or you're ordering one of the staples on the cocktail menu. You'll get a good drink with any choice. Don't look for the craft beverage on tap, as they offer little that's not bottled. Bottom line: tip your bartender and enjoy life. You're either gonna kick off at Turncotts or splashdown here. That's what makes the patron mix oh so good. If you hit the magic hours between 10 and midnight, you'll definitely have a story to tell at the water cooler. Overall: great homage to a fallen friend. Decent atmosphere with decent drinks. Either we start here or end here... Either way: Tip your bartender and party on Wayne.

When we entered the sports bar the tunes were going and drinks were flowing, definitely a place I can see as hopping for events. We were seated in the back and luckily we knew what we wanted to order, I split some tenders with the little yelper and misses ordered the mozzarella sticks. The mozz sticks were nice crispy and had that cheese stretch which is always good. The tenders though, hand breaded which is nice but they were really overcooked, to the point the breading had that weird taste to it. Neither of us were really impressed by the 3 tenders, but we powered down 2 of them thanks to some ketchup , Nashville hot and bleu cheese. As great as the waitress was , next time it'll be just beverages.

The Caesar was adequate with a fair portion of add-on chicken. The chili was sub-par: thin and soup like, not many beans or beef. Then COME ON DOWN TO BRADFORD'S on Monroe Avenue! You'll be denied service based on your skin color, and Gabby will call you the n-word as many times as she has black cousins (up to 10)! Just this weekend, two black women tried to get a drink, but instead of getting them a beer, Gabby got aggressive because she mistakenly thought one of them was hitting on her boyfriend. She then seemingly could not tell the difference between her and a completely different black woman, because when she came up to the bar and said, "Hello, how are you", Gabby told her to, "get the f--- out". Then she started yelling at her, using the n-word at least 8 times. But don't worry! Gabby's not racist, because she has 10 black cousins! As a bonus, she kicked out ALL the black people from the bar, even though none of them knew each other. The owner Brad Strine, who happened to be in the bar at the time, shuffled them out of the door while promising to "talk to" Gabby. See! A foolproof plan to cut down on your beer consumption, all while a white woman calls you out of your name with one of the ugliest words in modern vernacular. You'll be not drinking in no time! Come on down to Bradford's on 655 Monroe Avenue if you don't really WANT to drink, and you like being treated like the Greensboro lunch counter sitters* while Brad, the owner, watches on. Don't forget to ask for Gabby! She's got 10 black cousins! *Results may vary, based on how much darker or lighter you are than a paper bag**. **Paper bag not included.
