I've had Firecakes bookmarked for a long while and finally got the chance to try them this past weekend! But I'm left wanting more. And truth be told, what I really want to try is their beastly ice cream donut sandwich. oOooOOo, all in due time though...all in due time. I had just one, lone donut from Firecakes thus far but it was a doozy. The Triple Valrhona Chocolate Cake was the most expensive donut in the case - even more than some huge, ginormous donuts 3x it's size! But - I'm a white girl. I love me some chocolate. And I needed that bad boy inside of me. So Valrhona is some fancy schmancy chocolate from France. I guess I feel fancy schmancy having the chocolate in my donut but let's be real here. They could have used Hershey's and I wouldn't have known the difference! Heck, I'd probably even like it better! All that aside, the triple chocolate donut is good....quite good. I can't lie though...I've had very similar donuts from a couple of the other boutique shops in the city and they outdid Firecakes a bit. This donut shop is super cute, but it is very small so beware that there will really be no place to eat unless you stand against the wall. I definitely expected the ice cream doughnut sandwich to be a lot better, but I guess the reviews hyped it a bit too much and that made me disappointed when I actually tried it. Don't get me wrong, the sandwich was pretty good and very unique, but it wasn't made that well. The vanilla ice cream didn't look very inviting - it sort of looked like a slab of butter. I ate it anyway and the chocolate sauce inside was a nice balance. I wish there had been more chocolate sauce, just a little less ice cream, and warming up the donuts would've made the sandwich a lot better. They have new flavors all the time as well classics always on hand. Quality is superb. No matter what you choose you're guaranteed a giant delicious donut. You must try the old fashioned donut. I don't care if you have your eyes on something else. Your first time here requires that you try their old fashioned donut. I find it best to swing by Firecakes every now and then when I'm down in the city. They're constantly trying out new flavors so almost every time you're going to find something new and exciting. Only reason I'm taking one star off is the lack of space. The shop is kinda like a hole in the wall type place. I'd say only about four people can fit inside at a time. Yeah, there are times where there's a line just to get in the door. And once you have your donut you then have to find a place to sit and enjoy it. Or eat while walking I suppose. Peanut butter cup donut. Donut itself was mediocre. Felt more like a bread cake. They stopped making the long John and the butterscotch donuts that people rave about. A gourmet donut shop open at 8 p.m. with a warm glow that surely was saying something along the lines of "come on in!" The beautiful, big window of this business definitely does it a favor in luring the drooling customers in off the street. Once inside, we found a large variety of asscakes ranging from coconut cream, lemon, plain chocolate drizzle, butterscotch praline, hazelnut filling, and much, much more. Prices were in the range that I expected $1.89 to around three dollars for a doughnut. The one that stood out the most was definitely the traditional fire cake which is a large doughnut hollowed out and filled with gelatto and chocolate. It's a calorie and sugar overload but perfect for sharing. Morning, day or night - rest assured, there's rarely an hour of the day when this business is not open. Closing time is midnight on the weekends, so, if you find yourself having a few drinks and craving something other than pizza this is a great alternative. We ordered a variety of 10 different doughnuts for our group so that everyone could sample a little bit of this and that. A donut smorgasbord, if you will. I believe my favorite was the coconut doughnut with a dense, cake-y texture and shavings of crisp coconut on top. If you want fried dough, this is a nice place to get some (they even do King's cake during Mardi Gras if you order it). Donuts are a pretty decent size - all slightly larger than a dunkin donut or a krispy kreme. We did an apple fritter and a honey glazed (local wildflower). The glazed was perfect and shiny and had great flavor, but I preferred the apple fritter with the sweet bits of apple (although it really did have the greasiness of something dunked in hot oil - a little more so than most I think). No decaf - but decaf americano's are available (and good). The regular coffee was good as well. The case inside shows off their dozen or so options, starting with classics and ending with pizazz! The bacon pineapple donut was a favorite as was the old fashioned chocolate - you could bring your grandparents in here and everyone would find a favorite. The hot chocolate was Belgian in name, but celestial in flavor! I think it contained joyful angel tears - best we've had in a long time! The winner of all winners however was the donut ice cream sandwich - a glazed long john, homemmade ice cream (actually made for the sandwich, not just slopped in) and some drizzled fudge - game over. Pair that with the hot chocolate and papa's ready for the night! A must try regardless of weather - we loved it at 3 below 0, so I'd venture to say it's just fine at 80 degrees. The pistachio old fashioned cake donut was my favorite of the ones I tried, though it didn't have that strong of a pistachio flavor. The peanut butter one was also good. Sadly was disappointed by this place. Came by on a Sunday Afternoon and as a warning this shop is tiny!! Almost not enough room just for people standing in line to buy donuts. Definitely not a place you can hang out in. We tried the espresso cream filled mini chocolate donut and the pistachio cake donut. The mini donut was a light doughy donut but the filling and topping were nothing remarkable. The pistachio cake donut was also rather flavorless. I had gone to do rite donuts just a few days prior and was blown away, so in comparison Firecakes didn't really meet the standard. In the future, don't think I'd come back. read more

[Out-of-Towner Review] Is it weird that I enjoyed it because it wasn't too sweet? In CA, ice cream stuffed inside of anything is all the rage. Especially ice cream in donuts. So, when I saw this spot on Yelp, I thought I'd give it a whirl. We walked over after dinner, only to find everyone else had that idea. It is a really small shop, but of course, aren't most donut shops? We had no plans to stand outside in the windy, cold Chicago night. We squeezed in as tight as we could, but I ended up annoying the worker and being by the cash register. The line moved along slowly, but the entire time you could tell the single employee working seemed to 'hate her life' or just be having a bad day. Not one smile or nicety from her. So, when it was our turn I just politely ordered the donut ice cream sandwich. I'm used to a variety, but here they only have one. You get a glazed donut cut in half, with a slice of vanilla ice cream, which is drizzled with hot fudge, then slammed between the donut. Simple, quick, and easy. It didn't look that great at all. It looked boring. But I actually really enjoyed the dessert. It wasn't overly sweet, like some I've tasted. The ice cream slab is the perfect ratio of ice cream to donut. The hot fudge is not overly sweet and is a great compliment to the flavor profile. Their presentation is a little goofy, that wrap the bottom in wax paper and slide the thing into a logo'd cardboard coffee sleeve. It works though, fits perfect and is branded. The other donuts looked rather sad, but it was probably because it was almost 10PM at night and they'd been there awhile. Very tiny, but packed with light, delicious flavor. The maple glazed bacon donut featured an unnecessary pineapple slice that dwarfed all other flavor. The few bites I had pre-pineapple featured a nice bacon flavor, but the donut itself was relatively flavorless. And the chocolate cake donut was bland. Barely chocolatey. I come from a town without gourmet donut shops, and until I visited Chicago recently, didn't realize how sad this really is. Walking by Firecakes on our way back to the hotel, the window display caught our attention and drew us in. The hot fudge, ice cream and donut sandwich got us back first thing the next morning for fresh pastries. Firecakes is doing some fancy stuff with donuts, as evidenced by the mouthwatering photos. There wasn't a bite that was good for us, but we all sat on the floor around the tiny coffee table in the hotel room and dove into the box of sugary goodness like it might be our last meal. Let me repeat: nothing here is healthy but EVERYTHING is delicious, and I've got them saved in my phone just in case I happen to be in Chicago so I can quickly find them again. Donut weekends have struck again! Upon some very high recommendations, I finally popped by to pick up some donuts and was totally not disappointed even with all the high expectations and praises already sung. #1 fave: Old fashioned buttermilk - Probably the best old fashioned buttermilk I've ever had! It's so yummy. The outer edges are perfectly crispy but the inside of the donut is moist and soft. It's not too dense, too heavy, or too sweet either! Literally, one of the best donuts ever and perhaps my favorite pick at Firecakes. It's a must get every visit! #2 fave: Meyer lemon - I wish they made a bigger version of this doughnut because the filling inside is so tangy and fresh! I swear I can scarf this down in 3 bites.... #3 fave: Vanilla Iced - a huge donut but once you start eating it...you won't put it down! The one thing about Firecakes is that their glazed donut tops are SO light and it never leaves a gross taste in your mouth after you swallow. The vanilla glaze on top is perfect and I love the crispy pearls decorated on top. It's sweet but not too sweet! Others: Maple glaze pineapple and bacon - really awesome pineapple slice on top...I would've loved it even more if they topped it with one or two more slices because it's so tasty. Bacon bits are crisp and smoky and really go with the creamy texture of the maple glaze on top. Triple Valrhona Chocolate Cake - I'm surprised at how well this donut stayed composed even after I left it out for a bit. It's also slightly crispy on the outer edges which is something I like with my donuts. The chocolate is semi-sweet too :) Butterscotch praline - A tasty donut for butterscotch lovers. The inside is filled with a creamy smooth but still a light airy filling. One of the most legit doughnut places in the city...it has definitely trumped my love for Glazed and Infused. Between two people split the Jelly Filled Doughnut ($3) and Chocolate Iced ($2ish). The Jelly is your classic fare - sugary exterior, fluffy interior, and a sweet hit of jelly at the center. Wish there was more filling but I'm being gluttonous. The chocolate option had an okay frosting on top of the fluffy cake base. A tweet from Thrillist was all it took to get my fat ass to Firecakes. A sticky glazed donut is always on my cravings list but to stuff it with ice cream and make it a sandwich is just criminal. The ice cream is sliced into a rectangular shape, resembling a thick slab of ham and gently squeezed into a cup-like holder for convenient consumption. I donut know what I would do without chocolate in my life :)! My fiancé and I went to visit a friend in the hospital and we felt awkward getting a guy flowers so we decided to get him donuts. Firecakes literally looks like a hidden gem in a corner. Street parking is a witch- don't bother parking around here because chances are you won't find a place to park. Use SpotHero to find parking. Once you walk in, donut galore! The kinda sorta downside to it is that it's not very big inside so you can't really sit down and indulge. I can't recall if there's even legit seating. Anyway, I walked in, keep in mind it's kinda small so when you have a small line form, it gets crowded. The donuts are huge and well worth their $$. I ordered three donuts in a box and then I ordered a separate one for myself. The individual working was so touched by my gesture to visit a friend in the hospital that they added an additional donut on the house. I genuinely appreciated that because I had only the intention of buying two donuts but then remembered his mom was at the hospital with him. Well, when I got there, his sister was there too so God bless Firecakes. When you're going through a hard time, comfort food is always appreciated and welcomed and it was my friends first time having firecakes and they loved it! The donuts are big but they sure delicious. I had the chocolate vrhanova- lord have mercy. The chocolate served over the donut is mine boggling good- so good that I wished the entire donut was covered in that chocolate goodness. This was the one place I wanted to come for my visit to Chicago. I was extremely excited and pretty much willing to pay whatever I needed to for what I wanted.
