She's also old, and doesn't speak English well, but shae has always been very nice to me, and I make an effort to be kind to her as well. When you try your clothes on she knows exatly what needs to be done. I know we're not really wearing our finery during COVID, but if you can find it in your heart to support this small, immigrant-owned business, I know she would appreciate it. One of my favorite finds in Ballard. I have had one bridesmaid's dress and three pairs of pants done here and she did a great job with all. The woman that works here is very sweet, she is this tiny Korean woman. Talk about hole-in-the-wall, teeny storefront, you would miss it if you weren't looking for it. My dress was $125 for the alterations and pants were $15 each to take up. I think this is about average, not cheap by any means, but she does great work. NEW- I wanted to add that she does a great job with jean alterations. She left the original cuff on and folded the extra material in, so I could take it back down if I ever wanted to. If I could give a place less than one star this place would deserve it. The woman who owns/works there is bat shit crazy!!! There aren't any prices posted anywhere in the business. I feel like she takes advantage of her clients. I went in to get a few dresses hemmed and she did not talk about pricing at all and then wanted to charge me 200 dollars for the alterations!!! Plus she kept saying I couldn't pick up my dresses on a Saturday bc she was closed, so I would have to wait weeks to get my dresses back. However the hours on the door listed Saturday as open... Anyway I am not familiar with the cost of alterations in Seattle so I left the dresses with her. I called a couple other shops and realized she was completely ripping me off. I decide that the next I would just politely ask for them back, and I knew she hadn't touched them bc she said it would be almost a month before she could hem them bc she is so busy. I wanted to be polite so I said I had to unexpectedly leave town in a few days and needed the dresses for the trip. She was a little weird when I brought the dresses to her originally but she went off the deep end when I said I wanted MY dresses back. She kept calling me a "special lady" and said I needed to pay her for the alterations. I asked if they had been touched and of course they hadn't. I informed her that the dresses were my property and she needed to give them back. She starts yelling at me that I had been in her shop for an hour and I owed her money. I reminded her that I had only taken 15-20 mins of her time the day before. I very quickly tried on 3 dresses that got 3 pins each in them. I understand that time is money so I said I would be willing to pay her what I had which was 10$ since this crazy old lady only accepts cash. She said I owed her at least 30$! I didn't even have 30$ nor is there any signage that says it costs 30$ just to talk to her! She kept refusing to bring me my clothing. At this point I am getting angry and am considering calling spd! I firmly remind her again that the dresses are my property. She is continuing to yell about all this money owed to her. I start to walk to the back bc I have had enough of her insane bs. She grabs me and is still yelling. I say that she can get them or I will or I will call the police. Finally she retrieves the dresses. I thank her and help remove the pins. Of course she has to check them in case I'm stealing her pins. WTF?!?! She is horribly horribly mean and rude the entire time. I left her the 10$ bc I try to be fair but are you fucking kidding me?! She can have my ten dollars and go to hell. I will NEVER set foot in that shit shop again! When you work in customer service people change their minds sometimes. After trying several places, I've found my alterations place :) Seriously, THE sweetest little old lady works here! I dropped off a pair of jeans for a hem this afternoon (on a major snow day when many businesses/schools are closed) and asked for them to be completed same day. This place was a lifesaver! I inherited a dress from a friend years ago that I love (love love love love love) - but I had the misfortune of the zipper breaking and tearing the fabric. Which means... I was on the verge of losing my dress! Horrid right? Especially as it's such a tight fit I didn't have a lot of wiggle room for repairs. Luckily - I turned to Yelp. Who turned me to this amazing lady. She fixed my zipper and while it's a tiny bit snugger than it was before - it fits fantastic. Which means I have my favorite dress back in rotation. Great little shop! Conveniently located by Morsel, MOD Pizza and El Camion if you want to grab a bite while you drop off your tailoring. The woman who runs the shop was kind and professional, and took in the jeans I brought to be re-zippered with no issue. They're a high-waisted pair so slightly trickier to repair, but in the end she took out one seam and resewed it in order to make the zipper lie correctly, and she didn't charge me any extra. I explained to the lady what I wanted, and although her accent is very strong, I was able to understand her explanation of how she would hem the pants to be slightly longer in back and shorter in front so they would drape nicely over my shoes. I won't be going back. I brought in three items to be altered. One item was a black skirt with a broken zipper. When I picked up the skirt, the zipper had been replaced with a navy one. I pointed this out and the seamstress said she couldn't find a black zipper. What?! She had a week to do the alteration, and I had not been pushy about the pick-up date. She rationalized her decision to install a navy zipper because a small flap of fabric covers the zipper. But if by chance anyone gets a sneak peak of what is behind that flap they'll see a very contrasting navy zipper. This 'fix' cost $20. The other two items were a pair of pants that needed to be hemmed ($18) and a wool coat with a hole in the armpit ($10). These items turned out as expected. Another complaint is that none of the items had been pressed. I consider pressing part of the cost for an alteration and was very disappointed to return home with wrinkled garments. Last, cash is the only method of payment she accepts. Rather inconvenient. read more

She obviously takes great pride in her work and spends time with you, truly trying to understand what you want and what would be the best fit. Looking back on the experience, it was like a Seinfeld episode. I went in with a tshirt I bought for a friend's birthday. It was about 1 1/2 sizes too big and I really wanted it perfect. I chose this place because it is very close to home and Yelp recommendations. I went in and explained what I wanted done and that I needed it as a gift in 5 days. "NO", she said. "Not done in three days, you see that dress (points to dress on the table behind her) it take me one month." So, I said sorry for the short notice, started to pick up the shirt and was going to leave. She grabs the shirt from me and starts drawing on it with her little white marking tool. " Take in here and here" she says and she draws all over it. I again said I needed it by Monday. She keeps telling me "Not Enough Time!" I told her it was a gift for Monday night and it she couldn't do it right now maybe I'd come back after the birthday. Ok, so she finally agrees to Monday night pick-up. I've heard a lot of people say she does dress pants for about $20 and I know this is an easier job. I sew, but only occasionally and chose not to do it myself because I wanted it to be great, not just good. So, I wasn't expecting this to go over $20. Now she's marked all over it and tells me $35. I almost passed out. A $20 tshirt is now a $55 shirt. Then, she points to the design on the shirt. It was the faces of three girls. "Not appropriate for friend birthday. Why you buy this?" I didn't know what to say and luckily her phone rang. I seriously debated grabbing the shirt and running. So, almost $40 with tax I went home feeling like an idiot. Picked up Monday night and it was ready on time. Only reason for two stars. The armpit are was well done but the hem was so uneven. I could have done that myself for free. And to stick it to me one last time she says, "next time you no buy this design. not for friend's birthday, OK." So $35 for a job that would have taken me 45 minutes and took her probably half as long. I can't imaging what she charged for that dress she said took her a month. I was really hopeful. If this went well I was going to bring in a bunch of my old clothes to have refit but it would probably be cheaper to buy new stuff. So disappointed. read more

She did a great job pressing the dress which had many pleats in it and took out the bra cups which I can't even tell where she would have taken them out from! I was SO nervous since I have a hard time understanding anything but PERFECT English (that includes southern and east coast accents), so while I didn't understand anything she said except for "press here"x50, I didn't think she got what I meant about removing the cups (my receipt said bro tack of, which I'm assuming really means bra back off, so I though she was going to remove the back lining), but she did it! "Oh no worries, they'll fit", I told my girlfriend on Thursday as we were discussing what we were going to wear for a wedding on Saturday. They didn't. So there I was, Friday mid-morning, calling around to find a tailor who could let out my suit pants same day or early next day. The owner (who's name I didn't catch) assured me that for an extra charge she would have them ready at 6PM if I dropped them off around 2PM. Her little shop was spartan, but had a changing room and her professional, smiley demeanor. And that's all you really need. She got the pants done on time and perfectly tailored. The charge was $30, not cheap but certainly reasonable for such a quick turn-around . I noticed she had lot's of jobs pending on her desk and put me at the front of the line. If there's anytime to forgo the department stores and seek out the services of a small local business, this is it. Great place, great experience! read more

Give me my pants! That's how this Seinfeld like alteration experience ended. I brought one pair of dress pants to be hemmed. I explained that I wanted to hem the pants to wear with flats (no more heels!) and she pinned them up. They looked a little long still so I asked about that and struggled to understand her explanation but realized she was leaving them long enough to work also with heels. I explained again, no heels. She begrudgingly changed the pins. I changed back and went to check out, I asked which day she could have them done. She explained that she's really busy, sits too long and needs acupuncture (TMI). When can the pants be completed, I have to go out of town Saturday morning, any chance I can have them then? No, one week. Ok, I'll have to go somewhere else and I start to unpin them. She grabs them and agrees to Saturday. I say Saturday won't work, my flight is early... Thank you but I'll just go somewhere else. She then grabs my pants, refusing to let me take them and, at this point, we end up in a bit of a tug of war over my pants. I say, please, give me my pants! grab them and walk out. Maybe it was a bad day for her but I went ahead and called "Perfect Fit" where Pauline was lovely, made an appointment and will have my pants hemmed within 24 hours, plenty of time for my flight. read more

I found Finer Alterations when searching for alterations in Ballard. I had a pair of Filson pants I needed hemmed and a rear pocket flap re-set. She asked how quickly I needed them and I asked "a week?". I picked up the pants one week to the day. The pocket flap was perfectly reset and the hemming was also perfect. The only reason I am giving 1 star is because I had work done there before and she was lovely. This time I brought in 1 dress to have minor work done on it so that my bra would not show in the front. I also had a shirt that was too big for me so I thought I would see how much it would cost to take it in. The dress was $10 and the blouse was $40...but since I paid maybe $20 for the shirt I said I would not be doing the blouse. Well out of the blue she became very angry and said she would not do either piece. I kept asking why and she said she was "very busy". When I mentioned I would have paid $20 to have the dress altered if she had asked she changed her tune but by that time I was finished. I told her that I was taking my dress and future work to another shop. The most frustrating part of all of this was that I gave her a $20 tip on the first job because she did the work very quickly. Her pricing was very arbitrary so I ended up beig charged $500 for just the hem and putting in the waist of a very simple wedding gown. Other well known places have quoted about 200-260 for the same work. A very nice lady but kept talking about the tips she received and complained about one guy for not leaving a tip.
