I have mixed feelings about this place, and want to note that I did not end up getting anything altered here. It came HIGHLY recommended by good friends of mine. A couple of other factors - the seamstress was going on vacation in so her calendar was really booked up for the next 4 weeks. I attempted to get a dress hemmed and altered, unfortunately due to her going on vacation she wouldn't be able to hem it at all, so we looked at just shortening the spaghetti straps that were too loose on me - $38. I was shocked! The folks before me got their pants hemmed and a shirt repair for about that much total. She was very understanding when I changed my mind and decided to shop around more, but in hindsight I wonder if I was charged more because she was really booked, didn't want the job, etc. Or maybe shes just pricey? Who knows. Mixed feeling and mixed review, again I've heard great things but not sure I'll be back myself. read more

I asked to have a small hole in a duvet cover stitched and the tailor told me most people won't repair because they're "too heavy". It was a light weight duvet COVER and clearly just didn't feel like providing the service. Don't wast your time with this lazy tailor. read more

I've been using ElenVilla for many years now, and can't recommend her highly enough! My Mom, educated at a prestigious Tokyo fashion design school, was also a tailor for decades, so I know Ann more than measures up! An added bonus is she's also personable, honest, kind, and has a great sense of humor! I made the mistake of going elsewhere once (closer to home), and though my request was fulfilled, the workmanship was sadly inferior, both in quality and appearance. Instead of taking the time to measure and cut off the excess material, my expensive dress pant hems were just folded over and stitched, making them bulky and "wrinkly"- looking, and just like I'd done them myself (yikes!). I never wore them again - lesson learned. When some folks say "it was so expensive!", it usually means they don't understand how much time and labor is required to "unstitch", carefully measure, cut, and re-do/repair clothing to exact measurements, especially when there is minimal material left to work with. Just keeping everything straight/level, as when hemming a skirt or dress with a lot of material or "gathers", is very challenging - try it at home (on a skirt you don't ever plan to wear!, and note just how long it takes you :) For people making new items, the time needed to undo seams or re-shape items to a customer's particular size and habitus, isn't required. They are working with "virgin" cloth, and likely enough of it to make it a bit easier and faster to sew. Add that to their incomprehensibly low wages they cannot begin to support themselves on, let alone a family, and you can understand why some clothes, especially those made of cheap synthetic (throwaway) material, cost less new, than when altered in the U.S. Mom's "high" rates (according to some) kept her making barely more than minimum wage much of the time. Her middle-income lifestyle was possible only because she also sold higher-end women's clothing, in her OWN boutique. And like any business, Tailors must pay rent and utilities for the space they practice in, along with buying and maintaining (bulbs, needles, oil, parts/service work), the various machines and many supplies for their trade. Last, as Ann always details upfront how she will repair your clothes and how much it will cost, so you can immediately decide whether your clothes are worth proceeding, or not. I say you're lucky to have found her and her very reasonable prices - just go for it! read more

Really impressed with this little shop! They are very honest when I bring in something that cannot/should not be tailored, and explain why it won't work. When they take on a project, they do a beautiful job for a very fair price (tip them well!). Most recently, they mended a vintage cashmere and silk coat and the lining is now flawless. My instincts told me to leave but I was in a rush to get my dress altered so I decided to see what they would say.. as I try my dress on.. First time using this shop. I have two athletic skorts that I don't exercise in because the shorts ride up and chafe. I brought them in and the seamstress was able to insert some elastic to help keep the shorts in place. So now I can comfortably wear my skorts for nice long walks! Only taking off one star because it seemed like it shouldn't take two weeks for that job -- but I guess they're quite busy! read more

My tailoring savior! I have had two dresses fixed here. The first was a bridesmaid dress that I had ordered for my friend's wedding in February 2009. When I ordered the dress from a bridal shop and got my measurements done, I was probably 6 sizes larger than all the other girls. I was depressed and became obsessed with calorie-counting. August came around and I lost some weight. The dress would just fall off of me because it was strapless. I gave Elenvilla a month to fix the dress and they were able to do it without any problem or issues. The second was a traditional-looking Chinese dress with a broken zipper that I all of a sudden wanted to wear to Yelp Prom. I actually bought this dress years ago at some flea market/swap meet in California's Chinatown somewhere. I would have normally gotten a small, but I got a medium instead - and even the medium didn't fit on me at the time because of my chest! But because of that, it had a broken zipper that I did not get fixed until now. What was crazy was that I had brought in the dress on Monday, and was able to get it fixed by Friday of that same week! That's a quick turnaround! At first this humble little business does not look like much, but I have a feeling that they really know what they are doing. Plus, they are a lot cheaper and fast, too! They recommended using some fabric from another area of the dress and it was done perfectly, way beyond my expectations of a one-time wear. And only $50. I highly recommend them. read more

Elen Villa is a Filipino run family business. The day I dropped off my dress mom and daughter were in. the day I picked it up Dad was there too. They were very helpful with recommending the needed alterations. I cannot imagine not agreeing with them. I helped my brother in law pick out a suit at Macys, but as he is a little short, with a small waist and broad shoulders it need some adjustments. They had him put in the suit and needled it up with needed adjustments. I needed a silk dress altered as the zipper had bunched all the material. They took out the zipper (as I don't have to unzip it as a busty lady would have to) and made three other alteratios. His suit alternations cost $50 and my dress $30. He dropped his suit off Saturday and mine Monday and both were ready by Weds afternoon! To me this is an amazingly fast time! This is the second time I have gotten anything altered. First time was the rundown looking place on Greenwood Ave near the Safeway. A new zipper cost me $15 and I could have done it myself if I had had the time. We were given Elen's card by Dan the suit man at Macy's. He recommended her as faster, cheaper and better than the Macy's tailors. As of June Macy's is discontinuing alterations and sending everyone to her. She is open 9:30-6pm M, T, Th, Fri. Weds 9:30-5pm, Sat 10:30-4pm, and closed Sundays. read more

I was so disappointed with my last visit here that I had to knock down a couple of stars and update my rating. I love this place, don't get me wrong. I love supporting family-owned small businesses, particular Filipino-owned ones. But, when I feel like they are price gouging me for services that should be much lower for a simple dress hem, I begin to question their intentions. I don't come here often, but it is the first stop I make when needing alterations, particularly on cocktail dresses. I love this place because their service is quick and their quality is unquestionable. However, I recently came here for a hem adjustment and take-in for a lined cocktail dress and they charged me $49. Now, considering I spent only $40 on this great sale of a dress, I felt a bit queasy spending more on the alterations for just a hem adjustment. But, I was in a pinch and I didn't want to search for another alterations place. When I told my friend about this price, she told me she could have sent me to her tailor for the same services and...for about $30! However, the kicker is that when I tried to pay on the day I dropped off my dress, the lady to whom I usually make my payment insisted that I should pay when I pick up my dress and they would prefer cash. WTH? With me being a somewhat regular customer and their Visa/MC stickers on the window, why would she emphasize me paying with paper? I was so blown away that I just left with a questionable look on my face. When I came back several days later to pick up my dress, which fit perfectly with no question, I paid with my debit card and the lady forcibly smiled at me and curtly wished me a good day. This review is from an event that happened a couple years ago. Seems like long ago but this shop looked like it was there for way longer than that. At least the mess in there did. If I could give this place ZERO stars I wouldn't even give it a second thought. I came here because a salesperson referred my boyfriend to have a suit tailored there. I purchased my dress a few days after he purchased his suit and dropped it off expecting it to be done within a week. We were a part of a wedding party, and the wedding was being held the Saturday of that week. Let me just say that the alterations to my dress, in my opinion, were pretty simple. I just needed them hemmed and the straps shortened. When I came to pick up my boyfriend's suit and the dress. The tailoring of the suit was just ok. Now as for my dress... I picked up the dress on the same day of the wedding, then went straight to get my hair and make-up done. Yes I probably should have tried it on, but I figured since they had a week to do a few snips and a hem, how bad could it have come out? Oh boy was I wrong. When we got to the wedding location I put my dress on. Did I mention this was a Vera Wang dress? The hem was oddly done you could see that they just folded it and sewed it about one inch from the bottom. I don't know much about sewing but I do remember that my dress originally didn't have such a hem. As for the straps, you could really see where they did their crap job sewing in the back end of it. Can I mention that this was a Vera Wang (on sale but still pricey) dress? We had to take pictures before the wedding and as I climbed out of the limo, to my horror one of the straps fell off. Luckily the one person that saw was the one person that pointed it out to me. The bride. One of the bridesmaid's mums took a safety pin to hold it up. Closer to the actual wedding THE OTHER STRAP FELL OFF. I then went into a total meltdown. The mum came back with a sewing kit and just sewed the crap out of both straps. Of course it wasn't the best job but it was better than what this tailoring shop did! I do want to remind you that this was a Vera Wang dress- not because I wanted to point out the label but because it was a pricey dress which got destroyed and I never wanted to use again. If not for my friend's mom, the night would have been a total fail. read more

Brought in a cheap suit for basic alterations. I usually order my suits with custom measurements, so I haven't shopped around Seattle for a go-to tailor. However, Ellenvilla was close to home and from the other reviews on Yelp, it seemed like they could get the job done. Long story short, I wasn't impressed and won't be going back. The only work I needed was to shorten the jacket sleeves and a pant hem. I wasn't in a big rush, so the turnaround time of one week didn't bother me. When I picked up the suit, I tried it on once more in-store. The lengths were fine. When I got home, I inspected the jacket sleeves, and found that the lining of the jacket had been folded over multiple times to "shorten" it, then stitched back on to the jacket. Couldn't meet their own deadlines. Failed to refund partial charge to Credit Card. Stitch work appears amateur and rushed. My spouse took two items into get 'work' performed. The first was a dress that needed to be altered. The second was a construction grade, heavy, cloth jacket. The jacket required a replacement zipper and after being informed it would require some tracking down, we were told it would ready within a week. The dress on the other hand was sized and after paying extra for some last minute alterations, was also quoted with a reasonable amount of time. The person who recorded the alterations and reviewed the jacket for work, requested we pay up front. Nothing out of the ordinary as this is not a franchise and we want to support local businesses. Total was slightly less than $100. A few days later my spouse changed her mind and phoned, twice, to inform the Tailor to not perform any work on the dress. Eventually she got a hold of someone and they informed her they would / could not refund a partial amount onto her credit card. Rather they would be giving her a check for the amount associated with the dress. A week after dropping the items off my spouse arrived to pick up the jacket and the dress (which had no alterations performed). Unfortunately she was informed that the jacket was not ready because they had only picked up a zipper for it (that weekend). Did I mention that they had already started work on the jacket before she arrived? Instead my spouse was told to come back in 3 days. Odd since this was supposed to take a 'week's time'. Also the staff member refused to issue her a check for the amount she was to be reimbursed for. A few days later my spouse arrived, picked up the jacket and the check. The results of the work performed? I would argue it's modest at best. But I wouldn't feel bad if I argued that a home education student could have performed the work just as well. Here's the justification for my opinion. 1. the stitch work was not even. In fact a review of the seams shows they probably performed the work in a haste, as this (former Home Education student) knows. Rather I believe that after being confronted with their own deadline, they 'half-assed' the work. 2. They left portions of the zipper fabric exposed. In fact on one section of my jacket I could see right through the zipper into the underlying layers. In conclusion. I'm sure on a different day the work might have been better. Maybe this would have changed my review. But by not refunding the amount owed on our credit card, not meeting an agreed upon deadline, and finally executing sub-standard workmanship (as evident by an unsecured section of fabric), you have shown me that you do not care for our future business. If you wish to rectify the situation - you can start with a partial refund of the balance, in light of your partially completed work on the jacket. -P read more

This is the worst alteration jobs I have ever seen. Two weeks ago I sent my jacket for shortening the sleeves. It took 2 weeks, which is fine as I was not in a hurry. But when i picked my jacket, the edges of one sleeve are not even aligned. I pointed it out. The tailor said it was ok. When I turned the sleeves inside out and check the linings, it made me astonished that the lining were just very loose and sparse. I can't believe this is done by a professional. I later sent my jacket to another tailor. He said this was junk and showed me their work for comparison, which confirmed that the previous tailor work was just rush, cutting corners and trash. You know sometimes when you buy something on ebay and you receive it and it's a little too small? And you obviously can't send it back so you think you're SOL? I took a beautiful dress to Elenvilla to see if they could let out the rib cage area almost 2 inches. No easy task. Those ladies had the utmost confidence in themselves, and rightly so. I picked up the dress today, a week later, and it fits perfectly. And the frustrated wrinkles I left in the dress when I dropped it off? Gone. read more

When I recently moved to Seattle, I was a bit nervous to leave behind my favorite tailor - Ann Sew Perfect. Ann's work was simply amazing and she even gave me a hug when I told her I was moving. I trusted the reviews of fellow yelpers and tried out Elenvilla Alterations and Tailoring on my way up to Northgate one day. I had some jeans with a quarter-sized hole that I thought might not make it. Sure enough, they were able to sew on a repair patch and you can barely tell! Best of all, when I am wearing the jeans, I can't feel the patch. The shop is in a little strip mall and they're open till 6 (a plus in my book). I'll definitely be coming back here. read more

I give Elenvilla Alterations a 3 star because of the service and quality of craftsmenship I've received. My first experience with Elenvilla was through recommendation through several bridal shops. I got my wedding gown hemmed here and they did a great job and for a decent price. 1 year later I decided to bring a jacket and several pants here to hem. First of all, the price they quote you will change several times depending if you get the daughter or mother helping you. Suit pants with no lining I was told is $12 and with hem is $15, the mom will tell you it is $15 for no lining and $18 with. The price quote consistancy is horrible. Never the less the pants were hemmed right on. The jacket zippers I requested to get switched out however is a much different story. The daughter quoted me $25 to repair a metal zipper! In my personal opinion that is a bit much but because my husband loved this jacket so much I went ahead with it. To my surprise when went to pick up the jacket the zipper was not sewn back to the length in which the original zipper was (top to bottom) the zipper length was sewn about 1/2 inch lower from the top and 3/4 inch from the bottom creating a vshape flare. I had to request that they redo the zipper to the correct length. The mother put up a fight saying she fixed/replaced the zipper exactly as it was before. And that it was rediculious I wanted a redo since she charged me so cheap at $25 since the cost of zipper repairs should be $35! Luckily my husband and I had matching jackets and when I showed her how the zipper on my matching jacket was full legnth she had no words and just told me to come back in two weeks to pick up. Two weeks later I went to pick up and dropped off another jacket zipper to be replaced on behalf of my father in law. I reminded her to follow the full zipper length and not short us. 1.5 weeks later going back to pick up my father in law's jacket the same thing happened, zipper replacement was short about half in on top and 1.4 inch from the bottom. Because my brother in law and father in law had the same jacket but just in different colors, I had to take the duplicated jacket to the shop once again before she would fix/repair the zipper to the full length. There are better alteration shops out there, I wouldn't come here unless you are ok going back for redo's and have the time for it. read more

So I committed one of the ultimate sins as a husband. I forgot to get my pants tailored for one of my wife's good friends' wedding. Worst still, I didn't realize it until the morning of the wedding. I called Elenvilla at 11:30 in the morning in pure panic and shame, and bless the wonderful women there, they took pity on me. I showed up with my pants at noon and she had them both taken in at the leg and hemmed and back to me by 1:45. Completely saved me from the doghouse. They did great work, they were very reasonably priced, especially for what I was asking of them and they pulled it off flawlessly. I honestly can't recommend them enough, especially if you're reading this review in a frantic panic like I was yesterday. read more

Gave this place only 2 stars because they didn't match the thread color on one of my jeans. Not even close. The thread color is a light blue and they hemmed the cuff with gold! Granted light blue is an unusual thread color for jeans but there was no effort to even attempt to match. Now the hem totally stands out since there isn't a stitch of gold anywhere else on the dark blue jeans. They probably would have got a 4 rating due to the quality of the hems on the other 2 pants, the price, and time. Had to knock them a couple because of the other jean. Elen Villa is now my regular tailor. The women there altered the suit I wore to my wedding and their work was sensational. Since then, I've brought a number of pieces to them and each one was terrific. The latest was a suit I bought at a consignment store. The pants were cuffed and too short, but the waist and the jacket fit perfectly. I asked if they could let out the cuffs and eliminate the crease that would ensue. They said they could. They did, and you would never know that there ever was a cuff there, it's that smooth. And now I have a $600 suit that I only paid $50 for, plus the tailoring. Quite a bargain, I'd say. A few years back, I needed the waist of my jeans tightened and the after product was so good that I couldn't even see that they made a difference.
