This review is long overdue. I have nothing but good things to say about Chris and his team over at Fine Tuning. I recently bought a car from the Volkswagen dealership which ended up having a lot of issues that were not disclosed from the dealership. It was an extremely stressful situation but Chris took care of everything and handled everything with Grace. I'm glad to know that there is a great mechanic shop in Seattle specializing in Volkswagen German cars. This will be the only place I bring my car to in Seattle for services! read more

Where should I start? The lack of integrity and poor workmanship that you find at fine tuning these days are mind blowing. For the price you pay for the half ass work you get you will be better off go to the stealership cause at least they will stand behind there work. I took my Audi a4 here to get a transmission service done. I talked with Chris the owner the day before and was quoted $400 dollars for the service which I didn't have a problem with. When I dropped the car off I asked to talk to Chris like I always do when dropping off my cars and verifying the quoted price. I was told by the tech Chris had went on vacation for the week. So I asked the tech if they could also install a unitronic stage 1 tune while the car was there in which he stated he could do. I receive a call at 4pm that my car was ready for pick up but they weren't able to install the tune because my car supposely had a tcm from a manual transmission even though it is clearly an automatic. I was also told that price went from $400 to $640 because they had to use a newer gasket and fluid from a different distributor. To top that off this guy said he had to charge me for attempting to install a tune and to put the car back to it normal setting. Needless to say I was blown away by the markup in this transaction but I paid and took the car. On the drive back to Seattle I noticed smoke bailing out the back of the car but at this point I was closer to my house than there shop. Got the car home, pulled it in garage and there was transmission fluid running out the transmission like there wasn't a gasket installed. Of course the shop was closed since they called for me to pick the call up right before they closed. I called the next day and to my surprise Chris was all of sudden back from his suppose it week long vacation. I told him what happened and told me to have the car towed back the shop and they would take care of the tow and repair to my car. Had the car towed back to the shop to be repaired. I received call from Chris saying that the gasket was faulty and the car was ready for pickup. I asked why they weren't able to tune my car and what his tech told me. He told me that it was strange that the tech could tune the car and it shouldn't have made a different if the tcm was from a manual. He also said he would contact the tuning company and get back with me which I never heard back from him after several attempts to contact him after our conversation. So heading back home with my car and it drove worse than when I took it to this place. I ended up taking it the stealership and found out it was the wrong tranny fluid and there was a software update that was needed to fix a ongoing issue with these particular Audi transmissions. They put the correct fluids and installed the software update. My car runs likes new now and these guys never even mention a new type fluid or software update was needed even though they claim to be knowledgeable about Audi's. At the end of the day don't waste your time nor money dealing with this little dirty over priced shop. Chris use to be a man of integrity and this shop use to do hella good work back in the early 2000's but those day's are gone, it's all about the money now. read more

Long post, so a summary: After a lot of searching and a recommendation from a co-worker, I have finally found a great mechanic for my 1995 Mercedes Benz SL500. I got an oil change from an average, national chain. They tried to upsell me on a transmission service. An oil change is one thing, but I wouldn't have them do actual mechanical work on my lovely car. Not long after the power steering failed. No way to get around that problem; you gotta fix it. I really struggled to find a well-rated mechanic with knowledge about my 20-year-old, wonderfully over-engineered German luxury performance car. read more

Maybe it's a matter of economics: a small shop cannot rely on a parts and sales department for revenue--so service must be a high priority. This seems like a simple postulate, but I am always amazed when I take the risk to go away from a dealer, then find an outstanding auto shop. I found Fine Tuning Performance on the TDIClub website, and to be honest, I was a bit skeptical. It has been a long time between good, dependable mechanics, so I was apprehensive to try FTP. From the minute I arrived, they made me feel welcome. They listened to my problem and immediately hooked up the ODBII sensor to let me know which codes my ECU was throwing. Again, the level of personalized service is much much higher than what you get at a dealer. So, the guys at FTP are courteous--that's good--but how is their work? Well, for the first time in over 70K miles, my engine light is off (maybe they just unplugged it!). My car is running great. I came in for a problem with my gas mileage (I was under 40 mpg for the first time in my car's life), and Ryan was able to quickly diagnose the problem and hand my car off to the experts in the garage--these guys are good. They kept their promise and delivered my car when I needed it, kept the price within 10% of the estimate (they were actually a bit under), added a comprehensive inspection that identified potential issues, and were extremely professional from start to finish. I'm now happily over 40 mpg again!! This is my new garage. I can't wait to let them add some cool performance enhancements to my TDI--they have earned my unreserved trust. read more

If I could give them all the stars in the world I would. Seriously. I drive a 2003 Passat which while in my hometown had 2000 dollars of work done, drove it to Seattle and the day before I was supposed to drive back to Cali that pesky check engine light came one, for the first time EVER. Ok so Here I am, in Seattle, the interstate 5 finally opened up after the floods and my car is driving fine, except for that darn light. So I call a bunch of places. Me: "How much to check the check engine light" Them:"Anywhere from 90-150 bucks" Me: "Just so I know what is wrong" Them: "Yup" Not Fine Tuning, it was free. I rush over there and they brake out a computer and check it. Nothing major, nothing that would prevent me from driving home and they quoted me on what it was. Great prices. Seriously you guys are awesome. You really should know that. I told them that when I live in Seattle (my life long dream) I will only ever use them. EVER. I trusted my beloved 1993 vw corrado to Fine Tuning and had a great experience. If you don't know what a Corrado looks like, then I feel a little sorry for you. Onto the review. The previous owners of this vehicle did not treat it like a future collector car should be treated and it needed some TLC and more than I can give it. The suspension was in bad shape and the cv axles needed to be rebuilt and my sway bar was hurting. I left my lil green vdub in their loving hands. Fine Tuning are enthusiasts first and businessmen second. They take great care and pay enthusiast attention to the vehicles they work on. The recommendations I received for Fine Tuning were well worth reading and the service I received and the care my VW got made this experience a rewarding one. Chris and his staff are great. I've bought parts from them, I've had them do service to vehicles, I've had them provide consulting on what to do on my own. Absolutely an A+ rating. I recommend friends and co-workers living north of Seattle go here. I recently recommended a co-worker go here with his Audi to try and resolve the warning light nightmare which is VW/Audi cars. They resolved a $2800 fix at other shops for $800 by taking time to look into the issue and fix with a quality used part. I had some problems with my car and power loss. They told me it was a transmission problem so I paid to have the transmission updated ($1,500+) which didn't fix it. Not so good. Turns out another mechanic (Hans) solved the problem replacing the glow plug harness ($75). Maybe diesel isn't their thing. They told me biodiesel is no good for my '05 tdi. I know now it is just fine as long as I'm running good fuel (Sequential not Propel). I'm getting my tdi serviced at Hans Foreign Car Repair in West Seattle now and they sell Sequential Biodiesel. read more

These guys rock!! The service her is top notch and the guys really know what their stuff.. After diagnosing the problem with my '99 VW Passat for free (everywhere else wants a $100+ buck's for this service) I found out it was a simple fix that I could do myself. They over nighted my part and showed me how to replace the part myself so I didn't have to pay labor cost.. If I took my car anywhere else I would of left a few hundred dollars lighter, instead I walked away paying $70 for the part and learned a few things about my car.. Well, I've had to get my VWs fixed plenty and I've got nothing but good reviews for Fine Tuning. I've taken my 1981 Rabbit Pickup Diesel and 97 Passat TDI. Chris and his crew are very experienced and knowledgable. They don't try to rip you off. They fix what needs fixing and give you a good deal at the same time. Hands down the best VW/Audi repair shop in Seattle. I can take my car(s) to Chris and his staff and know that first of all they know what they are talking about. Secondly are honest and trustworthy. Yea it might not be as convenient as going to the dealer (stealership) since you don't get a free loaner or any of that, but the cost differential MORE than makes up for a slight inconvenience, plus you are helping an independant business thrive. If you have a check engine light, they will gladly scan your car and make a diagnosis for FREE (stealer charges ~$100 for this service that takes just a few minutes of time). These guys did an awesome job checking out my Golf TDI. They were fair, up front, honest, and reasonably priced. They were thorough, and when they found an issue they made sure I understood it before I got it fixed. They were flexible, communicative, and down-to-earth. Highly recommended. It's a little hard to find them, since they have a rotating sign, one half of which is blank. These guys are the best place to take your euro car! Not only do they have one of the best rates in Seattle, but they really take care of your ride. I took my GTI to get my transmission serviced, and they quoted me X amount. Even though it took them twice as long to do it (this was a downside of the tool, not their service) They still charged me the quoted price. They are very knowledgable, and will even let you use their scan tool if you ever needed too. These guys are in it for the community, and not to make as much money off of customers as they can. You'll also find a ton of aftermarket parts and they'll definitely work with you to get you what you want out of your car. read more

These guys can literally handle anything, ive thrown them some difficult problems. My 2008 S6 has the 5.2L V10 variant engine that go in Lambos and the Audi R8, they were able to identify and fix some cylinder misfires along with handling a carbon cleaning of the engine. Now its going in for regular maintenance and brakes. I will not even consider other mechanics with my S6, they have also taken care of a TT i previously owned as well. Rates are always better than the Audi dealer with and the guys have even more knowledge of Audi/VW than the dealer I would say. 1000x recommended! - Fabian read more

We were charged 650$ for them to return the car in worse shape they got it in. We had done everything we could think of with our VW and couldn't find the issue so we had to take it to a shop. I was very specific on the issue and told him what we needed them to look at to diagnose the issue. It was taken in, they were told to DIAGNOSE the specific issue. To let us know when it hit 300$. SEVEN days later they said they couldn't find out what's wrong, that we could pick it up for 650$. Every day we called after noon and they hadn't even looked at it yet each day. Not sure how many hours they actually put into it but the bill was high as if they did something. We get it home, bolts left on the engine, hoses not connected back, they broke a coil pack, they busted the fuse block, they left a hose clamp, loose on the filter for the air intake. The list they sent us after day two told us things like the coolant reservoir bowl was dirty but didn't tell us the month old spark plugs were fouled out. When I called the last day he told me to make sure we bring it back when we had more money so we don't have to pay for things they already did. Never again and neither should anyone else. I will be calling Tuesday to let him know our list of new finds, we will see how that turns out. Oh and they aren't open on the weekends and the location is sketchy. Don't take your car to them. 650$ to find out the engine is dirty and the headlight bulb is burned out. read more

What an excellent shop. I'm from out of state, and have been to a lot of garages throughout my life. This place is probably the most professional and top notch garage that I've been to. My GTI was getting engine and exhaust upgrades-- one of the parts that was ordered came with a defect. Any other shop would have used this defect to charge me at least $300 extra in order to circumvent the problem. The guys at Fine Tuning, however, called me and provided me with several options, two of which involved me paying no extra money at all, and with no delays in getting my car back. This is the kind of professional treatment and "informed consent" one would expect from a surgeon. After their service and upgrades, my GTI handles and behaves like a porsche. And to top it off, they ended up charging me less than quoted. Thank you Fine Tuning-- my only complaint is that i'm moving to MInnesota in a year, and you don't have a shop there. I took in my sad 1997 Jetta when it stopped starting for none of the obvious reasons. These guys tinkered the car back to life and were very communicative, honest, fair and thorough. They called to explain the issues they found, the parts it would require to fix and approximate labor cost before proceeding with the repairs. It took longer than expected due to some strange work that was previously done but they still only charged me based on the original estimates. They also provided me a complete, prioritized list of issues with the car without any pressure to have more work done. I highly recommend this business. I paid to have aftermarket parts installed on my 2016 VW Golf R at Fine Tuning. Specifically they installed an intercooler, an intake, a downpipe, and some software updates. This work was done in January 2020 and my car had 21,954 miles when the work was completed. I had to return to the shop several times to correct check engine light errors that were showing up after this work was done due to an improperly installed vacuum hose. For the intake - one of the shop employees failed to install a coolant reroute tube and told me "this must be extra parts we received for a different car." I had these parts mailed to me and I ended up installing the part myself (though I had already paid this shop to do the work). What I'm establishing here is poorly performed work and poorly prepared/informed staff. Fast forward to the night of March 12, 2021. While driving my car the "check coolant" warning sound and light came on in my car. I pulled over and noticed coolant sprayed everywhere under the hood. I parked the car and drove it ~1 mile down the hill to the VW dealership service department for a diagnosis/repair (thinking it was a coolant hose that burst or something simple). What the VW shop technician discovered as the root cause was a broken clip that is intended to hold the radiator in place - and their perspective is that this was most certainly caused by a poor uninstall/reinstall during the aftermarket intercooler install. I contacted Chris, the owner at Fine Tuning, with the information which prompted him to offer to have me tow the car to his shop for a "forensic analysis". I informed him that the work was already underway. Fine Tuning is only open Tuesday-Friday and is many miles from my home. I also had no indication when the incident occurred that it would lead to the work his shop had done. I shared with Chris pictures of the broken parts as well as the report from the VW dealership service department. Further, VW noticed that several bolts were missing from the bumper mounting positions and 2 license plate frame screws were cross threaded (all of this was replaced/repaired by VW as well). Important here to know that the entire front bumper must be removed to replace the radiator and/or intercooler. Chris is refusing to pay for these repairs. My car at the time it left the VW dealership fully repaired had 25,948 miles (less than 4,000 since Fine Tuning installed parts). My car is always parked in a garage and has never been in an accident. Nobody has touched the radiator since Fine Tuning in January 2020. Chris has told me there is "nothing he can do" which I have corrected to "there is nothing you will do - but you do have a choice". I've also offered him the broken parts as well as a chance to offer other plausible root causes for the damage. Fine Tuning's website includes the statement "...ENSURING THE 100% SATISFACTION YOU DESERVE." I have asked Chris whether I deserve to be 100% satisfied. He has not responded. I'm sharing here to make sure that other potential customers understand the low quality of work performed by this shop. read more

ok so heres the ******UPDATE******* PART 2 the owner called me and apologized, thought that showed heart. He offered to pay the bill from the other place i had fix his work...I gave them a solution i thought would work for both of us and get my car back in their shop...a simple front brake job and we would call it a square deal ....Never heard back !! so now im having my brakes done at SMB they are straight shooter's and do quality work. This place is the BOMB! They not only saved a SH!T TON of money, but were very customer service oriented and honest and fixed everything as neccessary without any problems. I took my 05 Audi A4 in to get it's 55k mile tune-up and get a leak fixed. They fixed it in the time estimated (1 day) and actually charged me less than originally quoted because they said the leak was due to an even cheaper part than initially expected. To give you an idea of what I saved. I called 3 places for a quote - both the Dealership and another German auto repair place and they quoted in the $795-850 range...I ended up paying $315 total at Fine Tuning! I am coming here from now on. It Cost me LESS THAN HALF and they did a nice job. read more

This is the kind of shop you want to find for your European car. They are reliable, trustworthy and LOVE their VW's. The shop has some really cool racing VW's around but they will love and care for my stock GTI with the same attention they'd give a customized racer. The prices are very reasonable and they're great at not over-diagnosing (which I find an annoying habit usually in the auto repair industry). I trust them and go out of my way to visit them for all my services. read more

I recently installed my coil overs from them and I couldn't be happier with the results. From the beginning they were very professional and informative with some questions I had. The install was quick and the price I paid was very fair, they even found a problem with my cars engine that my dealership mechanics missed which was pretty cool they took the time to find that when I was only in there for suspension work. I went in today for a nuisance repair. I needed to have my high beam passenger side bulb on my 2002 Passat replaced, something I thought that I could do. NOT! I researched Seattle VW repair shops and YELP led me to FTP. I was greeted and extended a seat while the owner took a look around and said that he could do this, while I waited. He was busy with another customer, who was late for his appointment, and various other repairs, along with lunch. Needless to say, within a short time and some more information about the shop's abilities, I was on my way. I would have expected a customary "Do you have an appointment?" The service was immediate, the results are this posting of 6 stars for being able to work with the customer and build a future customer base, by solving the crisis at hand. I used to live on the Eastside and needed to locate a VW specialist in the Seattle area. This will be that shop. read more

NOT FOR HIGH PERFORMANCE! If you have a vanagon or something similar I'm sure this shop will work for you. As other reviews state. Terrible potholes sketchy building and overpriced is all accurate. I have a heavily modified turbo diesel golf. Before coming to fine tuning I expressed my concern as not too many people are able to work on this vehicle due to the aftermarket work done pushing over 250hp 350 lb torque. Due to the lack of power I knew it was engine/tranny related. Chris specifically insisted he could do it "no problem"! After $3,500+ of brackets, clamps and basic advise i.e. Brakes, tires, suspension,wheel well liners etc.. My car is running worse if anything. The power issue wasn't even addressed at all and no inner engine, vacuum line or turbo related maintenance was even considered. DID NOT FIX MY ISSUES AT ALL! Would have been better off going to the dealership. I would never recommend this shop to my worst enemy! From now on I will trailer my vehicle all the way to OREGON from Seattle just to avoid this shop. High performance German turbo diesels, is not what fine tuning does. Steer elsewhere I will never consider them again. $3,500+ customer from fine tuning Seattle aurora. COMPLETELY UNSATISFIED! read more

Took my Jetta TDI to them with a check-engine light, asked them to diagnose and fix. I was charged $500 to diagnose what I already knew, the CEL was on because the EGR and MAF were reporting error codes. They replaced the MAF and said this would resolve the EGR. I paid $780 and took the car. Before I reached the first stop light the CEL was on again. I returned the car and waited TWO days for their mechanic to find time to look at my car again. This time they charged me another $100 to diagnose the CEL was on again and that now a different part, the EGR cooler, needed to be replaced because of a stuck flapper valve. To fix this they quoted me $475. Two days later they called and said they had the parts, but that the repair was now going to cost $975. They totally screwed me. Total out of pocket to replace an EGR cooler which was the sole cause of the Check Engine Light (CEL) was $1755. They robbed me & I'm reporting them to the BBB. read more

STAY AWAY! Not only is the workmanship poor but quotes are deceptive. I had my alloy wheel ruined due to brake fluid spillage during a fluid flush. Took over two years for them to replace the wheel. I found an engine mounting bolt loose after the mounts were changed. No compensation offered ... not even an apology. Vacuum line to cruise control was disconnected after a breather tube was changed. Again not even an apology. The worst is my camshaft and tensioner seals were changed, but continued to leak. We agreed to half price to replace again. Sure enough the leak continued. They claimed none of the seals changed were leaking. After much investigation I find Fine Tuning does not change ALL seals as I expected. Their quote does NOT include the one on the drivers side front, because the timing belt must be removed, and according to them rarely leaks. Well after $1,800 to Fine Tuning mine is still leaking. Dealer cost would have been $1,400 to fix . Again noting was offered not even an apology. BEWARE!! read more

23 December 2016 - This is where you realize you have to take outlying reviews with a massive grain of salt. In this case it's the negative review by Antonio C., a.k.a., Tony. Chris at Fine Tuning is pretty well known in the Vanagon community, is very experienced, and would never take advantage of someone. The same cannot be said about Tony, who was trying to pull a fast-one on an overpriced Vanagon he was selling that a buyer brought in for a pre-purchase inspection. Chris and his crew found lots of issues with the van, and told the buyer it wasn't worth half of what Tony was asking. Mind you, Tony did NOT do business with Fine Tuning. His prospective buyer did. Tony did not like the negative report (obviously), so he felt the need to leave a bad review? Fine Tuning saved the buyer $13k on a bad purchase, I'd say job well done. read more

I had a used Audi inspected here before I bought it. They gave it a clean bill of health. Since then they've done the routine timing belt maintenance and oil changes and the car has been running like a champ going on 3 years. Can't ask any more of a garage. read more

Attempted to install a TDi into my van but turned out to be a catastrophic failure. If you don't believe me I am not the first victim of FT's incompetence. I went in to get a chip tune. They told me I had to pay a fee for there inspection of my vehicle when I already had it inspected by the dealer. They tell me that ALL VW's/ Audi's have codes. Well guess what they scan for codes and there are none. They put my car on the rack and find no issues. After waiting around all day (mind you this is suppose to be a 20 minute re-flash according to Fine Tuning) they tell me I have to come back another day, because they just could not get me in after I had been there for most of the day. I come back on the second day and AGAIN wait all day for something that requires ZERO tuning skills on his part. You plug in the software and load it. Pretty simply. He tells me he might have to send in my ECU, but then finally gets the software in. Afterwords, when I complained about the wait they say they will do nothing to alleviate and charge me for the tune, and LABOR!! I give them two stars since the software at least worked and I did not have to go back again. I will not be going back for ANY services in the future though. I have owned four German vehicles and have been to a handful of shops both dealers and small ones (I like to stick with one unless I move). There are other tuning options out there that can give you the same and if you want, more power and not charge you for crap you do not need. read more
