Our group just visited The Finch in Wildomar this afternoon, 1/17/21. Two members of our group had gone previously and highly recommended the food, atmosphere, and service The Finch brought. (For the other group member and myself, it was our first visit today.) Upon entering, the scene has a hipster-vibe - books on the wall, wallpaper along the bar, record players, a garage door that lifts to expose a patio dining area, a faux fireplace with an adorable oversized lampshape, and a deer's head centered behind the bar, with, of all things, a finch perched on its nose. The food menu is single-sided; the reverse side has drinks. I would give it $$-$$$ in pricing, probably appropriate for a nice date out.
Upon being seated, our group was immediately brought a tray-full of waters. We informed the server that 2 of us would like iced tea, and another one of us would like a soda. Those came quickly enough, and our orders were taken in a fair amount of time. When the food was delivered, one person in our group had to return an item because they did not follow the instructions to omit mayonnaise, which he cannot eat. The burger was returned to the kitchen to be fixed or remade, however, once it was returned, the entire burger was charred-burnt. Our friend asked to speak to a manager to explain what had happened, because by this time, the rest of our group was done eating.
Of note: we never had a single person check on us for the entirety of our meal. We had to get up 2-3 separate times in order to have our drinks refilled because we were missing table service. This would have been understandable if the restaurant was busy; however there were only 2 other tables besides our own, and the occasional person or couple at the bar. There were 2 servers designated for tables, 1-2 bartenders at all times, and a variety of other staff moving throughout the restaurant.
When the manager arrived, all hell broke loose. Rather than address the issue of the burnt hamburger, he insulted our friend, and tried to explain that every worker at the restaurant "works 14-hour shifts, 2 jobs, and just recovered from the brunch crowd," and noted the restaurant should not even be open right now due to the pandemic. He made it sound like because they were open, we should forgive all transgressions and just be happy to be there. (His words were: "I shouldn't be here, you shouldn't be here, what the f$ck?!) The manager said he would comp the burger, but it still meant our friend had nothing to eat. Before leaving our table, he aggressively stated, "You picked the wrong f$cking manager."
Our group sat at the table for several moments, kind of shocked at the interaction, and waited for our bill. When the manager returned to the bar, a different group member approached and asked to speak to him. He said that the bartenders and the manager were doing a great job behind the bar, and treating everyone great. However, the servers were neglecting their tables. Upon this statement, the manager became very defensive and continued swearing at our group member. He insulted him several times, told him he needed to "learn how to be a good human being," and said he "didn't need lessons from an old man." (with many more "f" bombs in this mix as well) The manager continued clapping his hands, swearing at and insulting our group member, and confrontationally came from behind the bar to the front, as if he were going to strike him. It was so unprofessional (and unprovoked) everyone in the restaurant was staring at him, speechless. He kept ranting that all of the workers are overworked and should not be there.
He recommended we call the owner and state our complaint, which we will gladly be doing. We will likely suggest they change those 14 hour days into 2 separate shifts to lessen the stress these workers are obviously feeling at this time. Our safety felt compromised as a result of this manager's aggression, and I cannot say we will be returning if this is how they treat customers, nor can I recommend this place to others. I am appalled this person is a representative. read more
