Only reason I did not rate 5 stars. I have had the Upstate several times before and it normally is "smothered in garlic buffalo sauce" last week I actually added extra blue cheese and extra buffalo sauce ... I ordered take out and when I got home I was sad to see barely any buffalo sauce and no blue cheese...... the worst thing is I actually paid extra that day for additional BLUE CHEESE AND BUFFALO SAUCE ! Pricey but great food. There is also a great beer menu. We enjoyed the salads and goulash. Great variety in the menu.

Hot dogs. I love hot dogs. I search the area constantly for decent hot dogs. I went to Fest with hot dogs on my mind. And I found them. They are pretty good and the prices are not bad either. The chili was all I could want. The only drawback for me was that the mustard was just too overwhelming. It masked the taste, so next time I'll try for something milder. The service was excellent, granted I went in shortly after they opened for the day and it wasn't crowded. But by the time I left more folks drifted in. The only quibble I had was the food was a bit too salty for my tastes. I had the chips as a side and they were salt drops. I plan to go back and try some of their other offerings. If you haven't tried it yet, you should. Oh, they have a lot of beer choices, but I don't drink so I can't offer an opinion on that. read more

It was an interesting place to eat. You order before sitting down but there was no clear direction on how to order. This was a German restaurant which had snitzel on the menu. Unfortunately, they were out tonight. Had a German Braut with sauerkraut and spicy mustard and warm German potato salad. While the braut was good, the highlight was the potato salad...reminded me of what I used to get in Germany. Another highlight was the warm pretzel with beer cheddar cheese....AMAZING!!! My coworker ad I stopped in today for our weekly offsite meeting...and the food was fantastic! I am so excited to get something new and interesting on the Southside. I had the Newton which was chicken sausage with fig spread, brie, and caramelized onions. It was so good I purchased a second one to go. They appeared to have a good selection of beer if you are into that, and my coworker got the tiramisu and said it was fantastic. So, no complaints on the food. Interestingly enough they have a lot of bottled drinks. The only diet drink they currently carry is Diet Coke in a small bottle. It was enough to get me through my meal, but I really like a couple options. Oh well, I was at a German sausage place and not 7-11, so I forgive them that little faux pas. I really can't recommend this place enough. My only side request for the business. Please add flavored mayo options for the fries. read more

Stopped by and tried two of their sausages for lunch (I was really full when I left). The Hunter had Duck and bacon sausage with beet chutney, chèvre, and honey Dijon vinaigrette which had a nice sweet and savory flavor. The other was the Newton which was a chicken sausage that had Brie and a fig spread with sautéed onions. Each had a nice crust on the sides of buns to compliment the their sweet and savory flavors. Nice environment, decent beer selection, service was great. I decided to build a plate which consisted of the duck and bacon sausage with grilled mushrooms and peppers and a side of fries. I will admit the portion seemed pretty small for a $9 plate. The sausage was a little tougher than I expected, but it had a really great flavor to it. My boyfriend is simple and had a plain bratwurst on a bun which was $7, he opted out of choosing the 2 toppings and a sauce. He asked for it to be cooked well-done, just some crisp on the outside. It came out the opposite of that. He says it was mediocre, but the buttered and toasted bun made it better. Overall, the atmosphere made it a good experience. A true place of dog and bun deliciousness. Every now and again I have a taste of a good hotdog with a tasty complimentary side item (most often fries) and this was pure satisfaction. This was a Christmas Eve delight. Everyone was super friendly and helpful. What a great addition to the Midlothian area as we tend to be very limited on our dine out options in the area. My husband ordered a beer called Delirium Nöel, of course I tasted it, and it was actually not too bad. Now this is taking into consideration that I am not a beer drinker AT ALL! I probably wouldn't order this, but I could sip on his and not make an ugly face. Overall the food and the people were great. I will have to return to make sure this treatment and taste is consistent so until a few more visits they will get the Yay! I'm a fan award. read more

This place has great potential! I despise being the first person to only give them 3 stars, if it were just based on food rather than service they would get at least a 4. Again finally another new unique restaurant is the Southside! FEST does have a great menu, there is much for me to try next time I come. I think they are a bit overwhelmed in their customer base at this point. It took about 30 minutes to get our food, which basically consisted of Brats and hotdogs with grilled onions and peppers, which is a very quick type of meal. Try the restaurant suggestions on the menu for your first visit. OK so the two reasons they didn't get more stars... I am a mustard junkie, especially on German food. I love mustard like ketchsup people like ketchsup. This place touts mustard for their sausages everywhere, like all over the walls and everything. However the mustard they have-and show off is chain Plotchmans mustard which every style they carry is not very good. It's all really sweet, nothing vinegary. The another complaint, which is easily fixable, is the breading they use for their chicken tenders is corn meal that is way too large in its grit. It was like eating glass covered chicken, this is an easy fix. I really not complaining here though I think this place has enormous to be an awesome restaurant! They just have some growing pains to go through. read more

I will definitely be back but here is why I gave them 3 stars and blame "being new and kinks still to be worked out": 1. Extremely long wait for our food and it was fairly empty/not busy. 2. When we received our food it was luke warm at best and the rolls the sausages were served in were literally cold. 3. Pretzel (appetizer) was the last thing brought to us, instead of first, and again luke warm at best. 4. They forgot two sides of Mac and Cheese. 5. I didn't like the Sausage Roll I chose (The Newton) but the Mac and cheese was really good, my daughters chicken tenders were "the best" according to her (they did look great) and everyone else enjoyed their choices with the only gripe being the food was slow to come and cold. Atmosphere was fun, definitely kid friendly and menu options were kid friendly too. Enjoyed being outside as it was unusually warm for November, and think Spring, late Summer and early Fall will be a hit! Beer selection, as well as all beverage choices, were great. Glad we have a cool new spot on this side of town to enjoy that's not a chain or another pizza place!! Will definitely be checking it out again because I think the newness, not the concept or food choices, was the issue. They have a great beer selection which I would expect from a German inspired restaurant. The food is average, but I was fine with it. We went with some friends for a casual Wednesday birthday dinner. We loved it! It was wine Wednesday and bottles were only $10 and $15. I'm not a huge sandwich person so I loved the Mac and cheese option. I think they should advertise their weekly specials more, I would bet they would get a huge turnout on weeknights. the interior of the restaurant is very fitting for the type of restaurant that it is. i didn't get any alcohol, so i can't comment on that. However, their burgers are to die for!! I made my own burger with grilled chicken and blue cheese, and I honestly could eat those for the rest of my life. Seating is much like Quincy Market in Boston, find a seat or seats and sit, sharing table space. We had to hunt and wait for space, no biggie... but because it was so busy it was hard to tell if it was our waste or someone else's. Went to Fest because of several positive comments. Hate to be a debby downer but....Ordered the Polska sausage and my wife had a burger. Sausage itself was decent, the burger itself was decent. Neither to write home about. Kicker was that both buns were cold. Refrigerator cold. Sorry, they shouldn't be that way. Worst part was the food on the floor. While I would probably only give this place 2 stars, I don't like sausage or beer (and it's not fair). With that in mind, my husband that loves both things said it was pretty good. He got the Newton and says it was "freaking phenomenal." My sons had kid burgers and fries and loved them. I had hoped to get the charcuterie board, but it wasn't really available (the employees had to scramble and said they only had blue cheese). Instead I had a kids Mac and cheese (average) and a salad (slimy, not fresh). The bathroom was out of soap, so I can only hope the employees wash their hands elsewhere. Tried Fest about a month ago and was terribly disappointed. I ordered a bratwurst with fries and a soda. It took over 15 minutes to get a poor excuse for a meal. First it's bottled soda - no soda machine so you'll be paying if you want more. Then there's a water bar. The water is served from water carafes that sorely needed refilling and where was the ice? My brat arrived barely like warm and the quality of the meat sub par. I can cook a better Johnsonville brat at home on my grill. Oh no sauerkraut and my fries were missing. 10 minutes last my fries arrived in the tinies portion EVAH!!! Meanwhile my brat was stone cold and the kraut was blah too sweet and not a true tangy fresh cooked kraut. The bottle of mustard I reached for was empty and so were others on table near us. My friend who ordered a chili dog the dog arrived no chili. The service here is so disjointed that they need to be taken to the ER down the road and put in a body cast. Staff was too busy looking at their phones or flirting with each other. This ain't high school so show some work ethics. read more

First of all, ordering was done through the Toast app, which I found pretty cool; you get what you order, right? Well some may find it difficult, but not a problem for capable folks. The food was tasty so I offered 2 stars on taste. The other three stars were taken for time lost waiting for food. We received our order 1 hr and 45 min. after ordering, without a single update. 2-1/2hrs later we have eaten and are ready to head out. In what world is this acceptable? The staff here is great and the food is good. My issue is the beer. The canned and bottled beer options aren't great at all. There are way too many German beers! Not everyone likes boring beers and that's all you have! There needs to be more fun options... GOOD IPAS, stouts, ciders, and sours! C'mon!!! I know you're a "German" establishment but not everything needs to be German here. And what's up with music starting at 8pm?! You are a neighborhood/family restaurant... start the music a little sooner! I've come in plenty of times on Saturdays and the place is a ghost town. Also, the music playlist needs to be more up to date! No one wants to listen to heavy metal while they're eating. Especially my children. Arrived at Fest around 7 PM when the place was quite busy but was easily able to find seats at the bar. A local live musician was playing a variety of genres and he was one of the better local artists I've seen playing on a Saturday night in some time. A decent variety of beers should satisfy most patrons but the food was great, especially the macaroni and cheese. We also had a chance at closing to talk with the general manager and she is passionate about her place. If you want to leave gratuities, make sure you have cash on hand because gratuities cannot be left on a credit card. Overall, a great spot to visit on the outskirts of Richmond. read more
