Breakfast menu

One of the few places that has quite a few Yelp reviews, Fernando's is a locally owned breakfast and lunch restaurant, serving up grill based foods for reasonable costs, near Leicester Square. Needed to leave our hotel room near Leicester Square for a bit in the morning, because of a hotel required safety check, so looked for close places that served English breakfasts. Fernando's came up with good ratings. It's a short walk from Chinatown, and is a small establishment with 4 tables (seating for under 15 people). On a Wednesday morning, it was manned by the wife of Fernando (taking care of front of house and drinks) and a fry cook. It's a small breakfast menu, and wasn't too hard to make our choices. They stress their English breakfasts, along with breakfast sandwiches. It wasn't busy for dine-in (stopped in after 8 am). I love English breakfasts....the consumption of baked beans in the morning is something that just matches my preferences, and am really glad that I was able to partake at least once on our trip. Fernando's complete version (£10.50) and has all requisite components: Sunny side up egg, mushrooms, whole tomatoes, bacon, a sausage (banger), baked beans, toast, and tea (from a bag). My wife ordered a egg and bacon sandwich (£4.60) and a (white) coffee (£3.90). It came delivered soon after. The food was good. The baked beans tasted like Heintz, which is difficult to get in the States. The tomatoes were the peeled type that comes in a can (great to make pasta sauce, not so great for breakfast). The egg was great quality, and the toast was a thick white (thickness of Texas toast). The bacon was the Canadian sort, more like ham. And the banger was OK. The sandwich seemed to be overwhelmed by the bread...there is a reason why a bagel or muffin is used as the bread for breakfast sandwiches....Texas toast is just a bit too much bread. The latte was good, though the price approached what Starbucks would cost. We paid after we finished, and discovered Fernando's has been at this location for almost 20 years. It's a great place, definitely worth a stop in.

Came here for pre-theater anniversary dinner with my wife. The ambiance was somewhere between that of a trendy club and nice bar. There was a mad scientist vibe with the lights being industrial vibe and some metal decor. The music was thumpy and loud enough to remind you it was there. It made me feel a bit out-of-place as somebody well past my 20s, but also a bit cool or being there. You really come here for the drinks. We got the pipe dream, smokey old fashioned, honeypot picante, and one other I can't remember the name of, but which came in a flower pot. The pipe dream and smokey old fashioned were likely the best. Overall the drinks were more visually appealing than traditionally good and the visually appealing ones tended to have ingredients that weren't as top shelf and/or they were just too sweet. Not bad, but disappointing for what we'd hope. The food was the opposite. I had low expectations and the food wasn't amazing, but was better than average. We got the bao buns, crispy duck pancakes, panko halloumi, katsu curry, and hot honey pork tacos. They arranged for it all to come out in time for us to make our theater show, which was nice. The bao buns and pork tacos were probably the best. Neither blew me away, but both were solid. The katsu curry and halloumi were standard of what you might expect. The crispy duck pancakes was maybe as advertised, but it would have been nice to have some moistness or substance to the dug vs. it basically being crunchy salty bits of something. Overall, this wasn't a bad meal, but it wasn't quite what I was hoping for either. We may be back, but we'll probably try other things first.

I wanted something with at least one good veggie option, they wanted something with meat, and it had to be somewhere in-between Camden and Canary Wharf, not too pricey, and ideally close to the city because otherwise our Italian friend probably wouldn't make it. And lo and behold.... THE FAT BEAR!!! It was all we wanted and more! This place is sort of tucked away and up some stairs above a pub. It's really just a room and a half, which makes it super cozy and they have a pretty awesome looking bar. It's got warm lighting which makes the atmosphere really nice. Their cocktails were delightful and the service was excellent. I will make a very strange observation that someone working there had a very drunk friend who just sort of made herself at home. Then more joined and it turned into me watching this table of really really drunk people trying to order food. Two of them ended up just falling asleep. It was super strange. Anyway, me being distracted aside, I really loved the cocktail I ordered- Sloe Boat To China, and everyone else seemed happy with theirs. I was dying to try the pimiento cheese starter and the fried pickles. The cheese was particularly sharp and delicious. The pickles were good, but quite skinny (I mean come on, you're in an American restaurant I was expecting some serious pickles). The vegan gumbo was super spicy and delicious. I was impressed and enjoyed it. My husband dropped the ball and ordered the regular jambalaya (with sausage) rather than the seafood one which broke my heart a little bit, because I really wanted to try it. You know, I guess that means we'll just have to come back. Oh also another bonus, this place has brisket which is really hard to find. I can't say how it tastes but my friend said he defo approves (am I becoming more British with these words, or just more annoying?) Anyway, to finish it off I had the oreo cheesecake which the bomb. I love oreos. And it tasted like oreo. So all was right with the world. A wonderful place to come if you have people who want to try American food, or if you have out of town Americans who are too scared to try other food, or if you have hungry friends that want to try cajun food, or if you just want to try some really yummy food.

The cafe is super cute in Covent Garden. We were seated quickly at a small table and given a complementary cup of fresh popcorn. Jessi Juan, our server, was attentive and friendly. We ordered a glass of wine and a beer. The menu is fairly simple, steaks and sides. Other steak and wine specials are listed on a board. Steaks start at £15 and sides are £4-5. Food comes out super quick. My husband and I had Flat Iron steaks and shared sides of Roasted Aubergine, Tomatoes and Mozzarella and Bone Marrow Mash. I also ordered the Bearnaise sauce to compliment my steak. Everything tasted excellent. My husband LOVED the Bone Marrow Mash potatoes with fried onion bits. I loved the aubergine. You receive a token for a complementary ice cream cone, which you pick up when you leave. The ice cream is topped with chocolate powder. The free cone is delicious and a nice touch. I'd return, heck, I'd even stand in line.

Garfunkel's seems to be a casual dining chain here. The atmosphere is similar to Applebee's, BJ's, and Chili's in the US. Plenty of tables and booths inside. They serve a variety of American food, ranging from pastas to pizzas to burgers. I opted for the fish and chips from the British Classics menu. It was £12.95, which is around $16 USD. Kind of a hefty price, but the portion was fair. The cod was cooked well, and the fried batter was crispy. The chips (US - fries) seemed a little soft, compared to the ones I've had back home. I do have to note that the rest of the dishes were a bit bland, but that was also the problem at every restaurant I ate here. Service was a little slow, but it was crowded when we came. My partner and I visited on New Years Eve. I'm not sure if this is always the case, but the music playing was primarily American rock - like The Eagles, Neil Young, etc. It's fine, but not very in line with the classic, upscale feel. The bartending staff was top notch. I had a martini and my partner had a house Manhattan, both were perfect. We shared the iceberg wedge to start, a personal favorite, and this one was spot on. Great bleu cheese dressing, still warm lardons, and crispy, fresh iceberg lettuce. For mains, I ordered the aged Irish ribeye and chose to have it "gorgonzola encrusted". This was the first misstep. First of all, the grass fed beef stands on its own, I would never choose to add a sauce, but this was encrusted, right? Not so much. Here's the definition of encrusted from the Oxford dictionary: "Covered or decorated with a HARD surface layer". What I received was a steak smothered in (a very lovely) gorgonzola SAUCE with some bacon and spring onions. Had I known it was a sauce, I would have skipped it, or at the very least had it served on the side. Slightly disappointing, but the steak was perfectly medium rare and delicious. My partner ordered the hake. It was served with a prawn and a very tasty tarragon pesto. She said the pesto was the star. The fish was delicate and also well prepared. We shared sauteed spinach and roasted mushrooms, both delicious. For dessert we shared the banana and toffee mousse. This was the second misstep. This was a tasty dessert, but it was definitely not mousse. It was a very small sliver of banana bread (?). It had strong banana flavor and was served with rum raisin ice cream which was nice. It was also thankfully a very small portion as we were stuffed. Overall, a very decadent and elegant meal to ring in the new year!
