Class -- check, history -- yes, vibe -- meh. Ignoring all of a friend's recommendations, we headed here because, well, it's the American Bar. The atmosphere is refined and, to their credit is friendly. For all of the lore of this place I wanted a bit more than watered-down Billy Joel coming from the piano and drinks that were expertly prepared but wanting in creativity. This is it! One of the most famous bars in modern history. It's not a far stretch to imagine Frank Sinatra sitting in a corner wooing Ava Gardner, or Winston Churchill holding court with his colleagues over a few stiff scotches. As the American Bar (named that because of the American-style cocktails served there) is part of the ethereal Savoy London hotel, you're in a space where the question "Just how well do the rich live?" is definitively answered. That said, budget like you're going to spend US$30 a drink, because you most likely will. ;-) The staff is world-class. My buddy and I engaged in fun banter with both our server AND bartender which really made this a place I'm going to put on my roster whenever I find myself in London. My advice for visiting the American Bar would be to get there as early as possible. Even then, you may find yourself limited to only an hour or two as reservations start getting filled in from 2:00pm onwards. Next time you're in London, you owe it to yourself to splurge here! read more

The American Bar is so iconic and I had the pleasure of having drinks twice during my stay at The Savoy. The first night we sat at the bar and met a wonderful bartender who recommended the Hanky Panky and The Pink lady - delicious! These were perfect pre-dinner drinks and they provided some light nibbles (olives and nuts). The ambiance was amazing and sophisticated - I felt like I was transported back to a more elegant time between the art deco decor and top niche service. Really lived up to its reputation as one of the best bars in the world. We walked over from the Waldorf on the Saturday night we were in town and the hostess informed us the only two seats were left were at the tiny 4 seat bar in the back which was totally fine with both of us as we wanted to interact with the bar staff and get some recommendations. The bar itself is compact but well-stocked with every standard spirit and liqueur out there in addition to some vintage and hard to get products. We settled in to our seats and perused the 'song book' cocktail menu which was assembled with inspiration taken from famous guest and or songs. As we were deciding an offering of mixed spicy nuts, pepper crackers and olives came out. I started with a Concrete Jungle which was a mix of Woodford rye, calvados, aperitif de Normandie, red wine and robois, lemon and honey. It was garnished with drunken grapes and served in a flute with a large ice cube. It was like a fizzy Manhattan with a good deal of extra depth. I then went with the She Knows which was Monkey Shoulder and Smokey Monkey whiskey, peach liqueur, masitha, lemon verbena, procrastination liqueur and rosemary honey. This one was like a riff on an Old Fashioned and had very sublte flavor infusions from the Greek masitha and procrastination liqueur. It was a bit sweet on its own but you are given 'electric daisies' to accompany the drink which, when bitten into, give your mouth a tingly, citrusy feeling. I asked for extra. My third drink was the Radio Hurricane which was prepared with Woodford Double Oak, Pedro Ximenez, salted chestnut liqueur and Cocchi Dry. Similar to a Brooklyn but elevated with the slat tang from the chestnut liqueur and more of a mouthfeel from the sherry. Prior to ordering another drink we split a charcuterie plate which came with speck, prosciutto, coppa and finocchio along with caper berries and toasted raisin/nut bread. My final drink was Ghost King which was with Jack Daniels Single Barrel, visciolata wine, Branca Menta and Martini Ambrato. The light coating of absinthe-like visciolata on the glass reminded my of a Remember the Main as it was boozy, flavorful and strong. This may have been my favorite cocktail. The wife also enjoyed the three she selected with her favorite being a perfectly sky-blue Aviation which came with an absinthe cherry (that ended up in my glass). We spent a good deal of time speaking with the principal bartender on drinks, bars, and cocktail culture in general. Everyone working was very engaging, helpful and friendly. When I purchased an updated Savoy Cocktail book as a Christmas gift for a friend the bartender took it around to the entire team to sign and wish him a Merry Christmas which I thought was a great touch. We ended the night with a few photos and vowed to return. Truly, and deservedly, one of the best bars in the world. read more

I love this bar! First of all, I love live music, and this place has a piano man in the middle of the room. He plays music from Frank to Billy Joel, and it's all very classy. The menu for cocktails is a book, and each drink is inspired by a song and has a story. I was already a bit tipsy from the champagne at tea, but reading it was a bit of an emotional experience, especially if you have connections to the songs. The cocktails are delicious! And they better be for the price, but you do get a tray of nuts and olives, which are in itself a treat. I sampled two gin drinks, and I do have to admit the selection definitely was made based on the song that inspired the drink. I highly recommend this place to anyone who loves a good piano bar and excellent cocktails. This is by far the best place for drinks that I've been to in London. read more

This was ranked the #1 bar in the world, so I had to check it out. What's nice is that they don't have a strict dress code. I came in with hiking boots, yoga pants and a t-shirt (minimal packing due to Ryanair). I ordered Queen Mary's cathedral drink which came on a two tiered platform with the bottom tier of cocoa nibs. It was to heighten the floral scent of my drink. I loved the drink and the cocoa nibs even more (those things are pricey in Seattle). Oddly, I was the only one in the room that realized cocoa nibs were edible. Our waiter was very pleasant and came in a white blazer and pants. Their drinks all have a theme which correlates to the platform the drinks are served on. My friend had a non alcoholic drink that was served on a two tiered gear platform with a mirror platform. They also bring out a tray with pitted green olives, spicy peanuts and crackers for free! Ambiance was dim and classy. read more

I was expecting the height of all Fanciness and really it's a lovely hotel bar and according to news reports was renovated fall 2015. But it wasn't the fanciest barroom that I've ever been in. But the prices were certainly fancy. I stopped in after a day of sight seeing and got a seat at the bar, where I enjoyed 2 lovely punkrock cocktails. The bit of isometric sugar made it difficult to actually drink my beverage but it was lovely to look at. I felt like I needed a saucer to lay it in while I sipped. I did return it to my glass when I wasn't drinking because it was very pretty. The barmen was engaging but not too chatty but he was hustling to make all the drinks for the folks seated at tables. I noticed their awards from NOLA's Tales of the Cocktail and congratulated them on their win. I'm glad I stopped in for a delicious cocktail and to enjoy this iconic bar. This place was definitely voted 2018's "Best Bar in the World" with good reason. Service was impeccable complete with all the servers dressed in tuxedos. My boyfriend has summed it up as "like having drinks in a James Bond movie". Of course, the pricetags for the drinks will remind you of that too ranging from £18 to well over £100! (Made even more expensive by the currency conversion from USD to GBP.) But each drink was expertly crafted and beautifully presented. We were woefully underdressed in jeans and t-shirts. But the staff did not bat an eye (yes, our money spends too) so don't be too worried about a dress code. read more

Every city has iconic bars with loads of history, such as Harry's Bar in Venice. Perhaps, not as much of a big deal as Harry's, but American Bar definitely has a spot in that pantheon. American Bar is located in the historic Savoy Hotel on the Strand. It has been in operation since the late 1890's and in its current location in the hotel since 1904. According to the write up in the menu, the name "American Bar" arose because it served cocktails, which were considered "American" styled drinks at the time. History aside, it is not stuffy at all with dusty wood panelling and 90 year old waiters. The room is tucked away in a corner of the hotel at the end of a hallway, with relatively low ceilings and curvy, off-white colored walls and navy blue club chairs. All of this creates a very cozy, relaxing environment that is "away from it all". In the middle of the main room, there is a grand piano with... imagine this.... an American pianist who performed songs by request from anyone from Frank Sinatra to Van Morrison while I was there. I visited on a busy Saturday night and had to wait for about 15 minutes for a table, no big deal. The hostess was gracious and warmly greeted every person that came to the entrance. I got a nice table near the piano and ordered a Plymouth gin and tonic. It was tasty of course. The service was excellent, and not hurried at all. This place is like going to a spa, very relaxing. When it was time to go, I was hesitant to leave as I was really enjoying my time there. I highly recommend this bar for an upscale night out or for a romantic evening with someone special. read more

This was great! I was expecting the drinks to be expensive, and they were, and more! Thumbing through their beautiful drink menu, I saw drinks ranging from ~15GBP upward of 200GBP+. The whole place exuded class and style, all without any pretentious attitude. Decor, and seating was all very upscale, dim, and classy. I got a seat in the corner with a solid view of the live music. Waiter was very polite, helped me select and drink, and provided water and some complimentary mixed nuts. My boyfriend and I had very high standards when going to American Bar given how expensive the drinks were and how critically acclaimed the bar is. However, it really blew both of us away and rightfully deserves its high ranking. Everything was simply perfect! The ambience was surprisingly very relaxed, but the service was impeccable. We were seated in a table by the window, so we were able to look out as we enjoyed our cocktails and it also made for a more intimate experience. The cocktails themselves were divine. For our first round of drinks, I ordered the First Impressions and my boyfriend chose a Sidecar. The First Impressions was very light and floral, with the white pepper in the drink really coming through on the finish. The Sidecar was also very well executed. For our second round, we ordered the Googly and Like a Fish Out of Water. The Googly was a really fun drink, as it had freeze-dried raspberry sprinkled around the top; definitely a nice long drink for a summer day. Like a Fish Out of Water was also superb. Sat forever without drinks, wine pours were maybe 3 ounces where everyone else around us did not have that experience. This is not an easy place in which to secure a table. However, it was worth the effort and wait - the bar operates on a first-come, first-served basis. I have never had a cocktail prepared expressly me by an artist until tonight. And it was a special experience. The hostess encouraged us to take seats at the bar where "the American Bar is best experienced." So we did where we were introduced to the bartender Martin who advised me I was seated on Frank Sinatra's favorite bar stool. I only watched for a while, not daring to dive in. The care, attention and detail with which each cocktail was made was unbelievable. From the type of liquor to the aromatics, fruit or flowers added, each cocktail is an individual work of art. After a bit of psycho analysis with Martin, I concluded that I'd have a sazerac. Further psycho analysis revealed it should be a blend of rye and cognac rather than the standard all rye. Then I was offered the opportunity for a 5,000 £ sazerac made from a rye produced in 1858 which resides in the Savoy's liquor museum section. (Only 18 of these 5,000£ sazeracs have ever been served) Uncharacteristically I opted for the standard fare. It was, to no one's surprise, the best sazerac (indeed cocktail) I've ever had. It's a whole deal. Perhaps, they take it all too seriously. However, inasmuch as the proof is in the result, it was the best cocktail I've ever had.....So perhaps they don't. Came here as I hadn't been in years and had heard it was remodeled. Wow, it's even nicer than I remember, and the waiters are still elegant and the room is now even more elegant, it's almost over the top. And then folks come in looking like they've been working in their garden and they too are well received and treated. This is a classy place. The wait staff are cordial and helpful, and set such a proper tone for a swank place. Prices are what one would expect, given the location and setting. I've been here one and a half times. The first time I came alone on a Friday night in nice slacks, jacket, Brooks Brothers shirt with french cuffs, and a bow tie. When I came up the stairs I got the feeling I had to pass muster to past the check stand. I asked if there was a seat at the bar. They checked, and I was in. I sat next to a couple nice ladies. What a great experience to sit at one of the greatest bars in the history of cocktails! I have been to London a number of times, and coming here never entered my mind. A couple months back a co-worker from London was at the house and mentioned she took my boss to the American Bar and the nice time they had. I don't have a lot of cocktail books considering I have over 150 different alcohols in my home bar, and I'm pretty deep into cocktail culture. I specialize in pre-prohibition cocktails.I went over to the cabinet and said that even though I only have 8-10 cocktail books, I have the Savoy Cocktail Book. I knew then I'd have to come here on my next trip. That was just a few weeks later. To shorten a longer story, I was talking to the bar tender and the subject of the Vesper came up. The lady next to me said she hadn't liked the Vesper she had tried. I said that the drink she had wouldn't have tasted like the original Ian Fleming described in 1953. All the ingredients had changed over the years. Most importantly the original called for Kina Lillet, not Lillet Blanc, and Kina Lillet hadn't been made in 40 years. At that point the bar tender walked over to the side of the bar and came back with a bottle of Kina Lillet that was 60 years old. WOW! He just said he could make an original. At that point, I said I knew if I had to ask the price, I couldn't afford it. Over then next while the bartender pulled a few treasures including a bottle of Bacardi from the 1920's when it was made in Cuba. The last shot was going to be £1,000. Then he pulled out a bottle of 1928 Canadian Club Whiskey. During Prohibition Al Capone controlled just about every bottle being made. It was a steal at £100 for a drink made with it. One of the ladies next to me said that it would be like drinking history. She ordered it. Then, she offered me a taste. What a treat. I tried to decline, but she insisted saying she wouldn't have known about it if I hadn't been talking to the bartender. I ended up with two wonderful tastes. It really was fantastic. That, along with the initial cocktail I had created perhaps the best experience at a cocktail bar I've had. Initially, when asked what I wanted, I just said something with Gin as a primary alcohol and something not sweet. After a little back and forth, the bartender made me something he had created for himself to drink that fit the criteria. It was fantastic. Now fast forward a couple months to the next half visit. I was with a coworker. I was wearing a nice shirt, the coworker had a polo shirt. We were in chino trousers. No jackets or ties. It as a Thursday night. We came to the entrance. We were told nothing was available for a few minutes and sent to the side room/bar. While there we saw several other nicer dressed couples walk right in. Then they came and got another couple from our side room also much better dressed. The only other people not let in were Americans in cargo shorts. It was obvious were not going to get in until there was nothing better around. We left and went to the Knights Bar at Simpsons. We were treated like royalty and had excellent drinks there. This is my favorite bar in the whole world. I was brought here as a child and my images where of a man playing the piano and singing. Today this is still happening, but now i can enjoy a cocktail in an utterly romantic and old fashioned setting. This bar has been open since 1889.. amazing! Drinks have been passed down and new ones are added. If you want a show sit at the bar and watch the bar men make the drinks.. they work hard and put a whole ton of love into every cocktail. Favorite drinks include 'the aviator', and 'the blushing monarch', but i have never had the same drink twice, i just ask the bar man what drink do you think i would like and let them do there magic. I first caught notice of this bar because it was on several lists of "Top bars in the world". Since I'm easily sucked into hype, we gave this place a shot. American bar did not disappoint. While the drinks are EXTREMELY expensive, about £18 and up, the drinks are very intricately made. The lounge was classy, had live music, and the service was second to none. The free munchies they provide include stuffed olives and an excellent snack mix, which were all nice touches. I can see coming here as regular if I was a baller, but sadly, I am not, so this will be a rare occurrence. Their drinks are just really well made and I can definitely vouch that his is a top 5 bar in my book. Bar Chef in toronto is still #1 for me :) 4 stars. (-1 star for the prices. The history of this cocktail bar is great context for the experience! Given that it's in the iconic Savoy, most expect the service and quality to be above par... and it didn't disappoint at all! We came in as curious travelers and quickly learned that American Bar was only recently rated in October as the #1 cocktail bar in the world! I'm a lover of classic cocktails, and as such typically measure the quality of a bar by its Old Fashioned. This one was amazing... beautiful balance of bitter and sweet with a touch of citrus to round out a 100 proof rye. My wife ordered a fun mezcal-based cocktail that was accompanied by some cotton candy and pink peppercorns... perhaps a bit weird sounding, but they complimented the smoky beverage nicely! The rest of the cocktail menu was adventurous and has plenty of fun choices for all. The drinks were accompanied by a complimentary mix of dried fruit/almonds, spicy snack mix and anchovy-stuffed olives (so good). The ambiance was quite upscale with fun pictures of various famous people and paintings, and the seating was very comfortable. We would highly recommend stopping in! read more

I was staying across the street, and I love a good cocktail -- so I had to come to the American Bar. It was one of the best parts of my short trip to London. I arrived about 10:30 on a Saturday night. There was a wait in their somewhat warm "museum" waiting area. It was close enough to hear the music from the bar, and the wait was only about 15 minutes. Alice, who was the hostess that evening, lead me to a little table close to the pianist and showed me the menu -- the graph at the front is a bit pretentious and a bit wonderful -- I loved it. My waiter, a wonderful young man from France helped me pick a drink -- the Pinstripe. I had some concerns since every drink on the menu had at least one ingredient that I don't like. But I put my faith in their bartender -- and it was one of the best drinks I've had in my life. Everything blended together harmoniously. It was magic. I enjoyed my drink, the music and how friendly the staff were. And I especially enjoyed chatting with Alice, who came by later in the evening as they were closing down to talk with me about cocktails, London and life. I almost don't want to go back because I don't think my first experience can be topped. American Bar is a hidden 1920's throwback in the Savoy Hotel, a must for anyone looking for a great drink. My boyfriend and I were in London for a week and one visit was not enough. Between us, we probably tried 8 different cocktails, all of which were superb. The ambiance is casual and sophisticated with live piano music each night. Large selection of spirits. Really can't beat this place. Cocktails are pricy at 20 each for the cheaper ones, but for a night out just suck it up and enjoy. Super strong and made as is for a reason. Make your own classic or enjoy the presented ones in their book/menu. I tried the old fashioned in the menu that was combined with a two drink portion and got it alone for 25. I just really did not enjoy my time here and I had high hopes because of the great reviews! I am totally ok with spending a lot on a cocktail for a great drink and atmosphere. The bar itself was pretty, the service was nice, there was a great piano player and the bar snacks were delicious. However the drink is what should be the best part and I really did not like my cocktail and my husband's old fashioned was really pathetic. I would've blamed myself for choosing the wrong cocktail since it was very weak and too sweet for my liking but I do not know how they messed up a classic old fashioned. This review is way overdue, but please do not skip the American Bar at the Savoy if you are ever in London. I was told by many a bartender in Boston, where I was living before my most I recent trip across the pond, that I needed to go to American Bar. I came here on a quiet Monday afternoon and sat at the bar with Dominic, one of the most knowledgable and kind bartenders I have had the pleasure of meeting. He was kind enough to make me three different cocktails and walk me through the ingredients he was using, tell me about where his spirits came from and why he was using them. He even made me a gin martini, which the bar is known for, and people who know me would be shocked to know that I drank that baby and enjoyed it--the first and only martini that I can say that about. Not only was he a fantastic bartender, but he suggested some other bars I had to try in the area--all of which were amazing experiences as well. Apart from stellar drinks and service, this bar is, in general, absolutely gorgeous. Will definitely come back the next time I'm in town and enjoy one of those martinis. read more

So so dissapointed, myself, my mum and son had just been for brunch and decided to pop into the savoy for a couple of cocktails. My mum asked for a cosmo, to which the waitress explained they dont do them, only whats on the menu, (which I would like to point out are special cocktails which cost more) Next to us was a table of four, we overheard them saying how it wasnt right that they dont do porn star martinis, we all started a conversation amd sharing how we wasn't impressed and for the money it wasnt worth it. Two had negronis and while nice full of ice. We spoke with a manager (a blonde lady) and expressed our dissapointment. She said they do serve regular cocktails and that she will look i to it and be back. This place is obviously popular as it was voted The Best Bar in the World. It's definitely an experience. It's very small but classy. The staff was very friendly & helpful. The drink menu was very extensive. Certain drinks are served on special trays placed on your table. It was interesting. You have to get a table as you cannot just walk up & sit at the bar. We waited for about a half hour at about 9pm one evening. The drinks were delicious. Expensive, but delicious. The ambiance is classy with dim lighting.
