Rules Cocktail Bar is beautiful! It's basically an indoor garden. They did an amazing job with the ambiance. My friends and I walked over after eating dinner nearby and fell in love the second we walked into the cocktail bar (on the second floor above the restaurant). They had a great cocktail menu and I went with a raspberry whiskey cocktail. It came with a lot of crushed ice on top but I enjoyed it overall. Rules was the perfect ending to our London trip!

I've been contemplating this review for the past two or three weeks, since the first time I made it to Rules' cocktail bar and I've come to a conclusion: this is, in my mind, the paragon of a London cocktail bar. Places like The Nightjar, The Connaught, and 69 Colebrooke Row may have great names in the scene, but all of them pale in comparison to the ideal experience that this lounge offers for me. The combination of classic, elegant, timeless ambiance coupled with an utter lack of a pretension, rounded out by the necessary exquisite cocktail program makes this first-floor institute of imbibition exceptional. Any bar that makes liberal use of ingredients like Chartreuse and Galliano is likely to be a hit with me, but I've rarely (if ever) encountered the likes of barrel-aged cachaça or wormwood bitters. An education in drink lore and obscure alcoholic products is just a bonus byproduct of a visit here - an addictive element far stronger than the booze itself to an enthusiast of my ilk. It does give me pause, however, that Brian, the spirits savant who started this venture three years ago, has just departed to work on another project, which does beg the question of if/how Rules will change under the guiding hand of another. I'm more than willing to continue patronising this establishment to see how it evolves.

Fabulous atmospheric bar with sumptuous decor. Worth seeing if you enjoy history or Downton Abbey.

Empty out your pockets and head over to Rules. Your pockets will be lighter but you will feel a whole lot classier for doing it. This swanky place is quite formal (the tenders are wearing suits, after all) but they don't mind if your dressed smart casual (or is it casual smart? Oh I don't remember how it goes). Classically made cocktails and charming chit chat. Come for the atmosphere.

I came into the cocktail bar waiting for my dinner reservation. There was a mix of regulars and out-of-towners, and the bartender engaged me in wonderful conversation about things to see while I was in London as well as his own time he spent in my home state of Florida. I was interested in trying a gin cocktail (I mean, it's England right?), and he whipped up an aviation and another wonderful concoction for me to try. The atmosphere, quality of drinks, and service make this place definitely worth a visit.

Specialty cocktail menu (the short list)

I could see myself having a 5 star experience here. 4 stars for now, until I return... Rules is a great little semi-hidden spot with a very intimate, comfortable yet upscale feel. Unmarked door with a very dressed up but very friendly doorman. Had the Tec 9, really interesting and unique flavors. Delicious frothy top, strong espresso taste but different somehow without any distinct tequila flavor. Their bartenders really know their stuff. Comfy chairs and low lighting (but not too low) add to the atmosphere. Mixed nuts with your drink. In addition to the "short list" of specialty cocktails the waitress assured me they also make "classic cocktails". Good wine and spirits menu, nice selection of single malts. Definitely excited to return!

A (very watered down) Penicillin cocktail. Nice ambience though.

A 4 for decor and 2 for cocktails. Because of the decor and ambience, I'd return for a drink that they don't make. The service dressed smart, but was underwhelming in its attentiveness.

Don't go to this cocktail bar. Don't wander around Soho for an hour attempting to force your 5-strong group into packed, inferior joints filled with raucous businessmen, tipsy Sloanes and haughty barstaff before giving up and heading to the Strand on the off-chance that Rules might have a space. Don't huddle under the creaky awning to avoid the December drizzle and peer longingly into the ancient restaurant's warm, inviting interior. Don't take the secret staircase next door and pass into a wood-panelled haven of ye olde English charm, bedecked with ageless paintings, padded armchairs, velvet sofas and gently alive with charming waiters who attend your every whim without the slightest ounce of contempt or arrogance. Don't partake of an exquisite cocktail, expertly mixed at the bar, poured with perfect precision into a pre-iced glass before your very eyes, garnished appropriately, and left to linger on its sterling silver coaster as the aromas gently tickle your nose. Don't balk at the £14 prices. (Ok, do that). Don't take a sip and suddenly appreciate why such a ransom is fully justified. Don't spend the entire evening nursing a single drink without once being made to feel as if you are wasting everybody's time and space upon this paltry planet. Don't do any of this. Because if you do, it won't be nearly so special. Nobody should discover the secret. I only want it for myself. Go away.

This restaurant is just fine, but I was expecting more. Nothing we ate particularly stood out and the service was very, very slow.

Finally a bar with no music, excellent cocktails and the right mix of English style coziness and informality. I'll be back!

FRIES WITH TRUFFLE CHEESE The fries weren't as crispy as I would've liked, but the soft bite similar to mashed potatoes was pretty good. The cheese itself really carried the rich flavors of the truffle without overwhelming your tastebuds. Such a decadent cheese. SALT AND PEPPER SQUID The squid meat itself wasn't over cooked which is easy to do and makes it feel like you're chewing on a tire. Not the case here. The squid was fried perfectly, nice and crispy first bite. The garlic aioli complimented the batter they used to fry the squid in, very tasty. PEKING DUCK LETTUCE WRAPS These lettuce wraps were the perfect two bites sized appetizers. Such a flavorful and well cooked duck. The cucumber salad and lettuce helped bring the intensity of flavors down so that you could enjoy every bite. There's a full bar, but service is a little slow and congested. Staff are really nice and friendly. The dart games are so involved where each player can have their selfie taken and name displayed on the board. You can compete as teams or against each other depending on your chosen game. At the end, there is a final game stats to show who won and a group photo to conclude all the fun. A fantastic way to test out your dart skills and have fun with your loved ones!

Maybe it was…read morebecause it was kind of (not really) late and there weren't many other places open (aside from the first place we tried across the street who told us the kitchen was closed even though they were open for another 3 hours) but the place was packed! And it was loud. I guess technically it was a darts place and so there was a lot of excitement near the dartboard area. The bar staff were all buzzing about shaking their shakers and pouring drinks. It was a great vibe - apropos for a Friday night. Ok we got the little bit lychee drink (subbed vodka for gin) which was excellent with what looked like a dark dahlia floating on top. I wanted to try a British beer and got the magic rock saucery session pale ale (saying its name is like a built in sobriety test). The ale was definitely IPA but with a really clean finish. And because I'm a pig, ordered the fries with truffle cheese. Wow that was so so good! Shoestring fries with a heavy drizzle of truffle melted cheese. I can't really complain about the super loud music since it probably suited the main clientele and was really good (club versions of many 80s songs). So it looks like a really fun joint for the young locals with some older folks who maybe stumbled in like we did. Really nice bartenders and front staff. Thanks for not giving us a BS line to keep us out like the other place.

Came here for pre-theater anniversary dinner with my wife. The ambiance was somewhere between that of a trendy club and nice bar. There was a mad scientist vibe with the lights being industrial vibe and some metal decor. The music was thumpy and loud enough to remind you it was there. It made me feel a bit out-of-place as somebody well past my 20s, but also a bit cool or being there. You really come here for the drinks. We got the pipe dream, smokey old fashioned, honeypot picante, and one other I can't remember the name of, but which came in a flower pot. The pipe dream and smokey old fashioned were likely the best. Overall the drinks were more visually appealing than traditionally good and the visually appealing ones tended to have ingredients that weren't as top shelf and/or they were just too sweet. Not bad, but disappointing for what we'd hope. The food was the opposite. I had low expectations and the food wasn't amazing, but was better than average. We got the bao buns, crispy duck pancakes, panko halloumi, katsu curry, and hot honey pork tacos. They arranged for it all to come out in time for us to make our theater show, which was nice. The bao buns and pork tacos were probably the best. Neither blew me away, but both were solid. The katsu curry and halloumi were standard of what you might expect. The crispy duck pancakes was maybe as advertised, but it would have been nice to have some moistness or substance to the dug vs. it basically being crunchy salty bits of something. Overall, this wasn't a bad meal, but it wasn't quite what I was hoping for either. We may be back, but we'll probably try other things first.
