Gwen bar never disappoints. The greatest of craft cocktails so high above all others. New dish "Autumn Blossom" was so wonderful. As a vegetarian, I don't see such highly composed dishes. It's killer to get the dabs of sauces and meticulously created meals. It's a joy I've longed for. For decades. Sadly the umami bomb has gone downhill, brought my friend who asked if it was rice forward and our sweet waitress made the mistake of saying no. It was pretty much all rice w some mushrooms and broccolini. Our server didn't even notice that she didn't eat it. Not the best intro for new diners. I had it before and it never looked like this. I think the kitchen is bored of making it and if so perhaps it's time to retire it rather than half doing it. Presentation was a let down too. A beautiful spot to bring friends, a date, or anything in between. The interior is a lovely curation of vintage stylings, mixed with just the right touch of modern. Real plants cascade from the ceiling and walls which breathe life into the space. Incredibly aesthetic in every corner, all the way to the bathroom, with fun surprises such as the peacock (is it real?) to the butterfly wallpaper. I tasted my friends drink and it was delicious and light. Not trying to be anything it's not and photo ready. My duck liver was delicious, but unfortunately I dropped the first half on to the floor and was only able to appreciate 50% of my plate. The only only only downside of my experience was not being offered a new plate or asked if I wanted a different option. But everyone was lovely and helpful. I will be back! read more

This is not a great place for food and definitely not for service. Our party of four shared six or so plates of food and none were memorable. In fact we ate there last Friday and I can't remember a single thing we ordered. Also, there as a bug floating in one of my drinks. We were still hungry and went around the corner for slices of pizza (a much better value) Also, the service was intense. Seemed like every five seconds there our wait person interrupted asking us if we needed anything. That person could not have hurried us out of there any faster. As we left there were plenty of open tables. Will not be back. UPDATE: The owner was kind and thoughtful enough to respond back and offer to comp the drink, which had already been done, and a meal. Fern Bar gives you the Rainforest Cafe fantasy with good food, friendly service and live music instead of sad zebra noises. We got the burger, fried chicken, clam "chowder" (it's just soup) and the pickles, in addition to two cocktails and a dessert drink. Everything was delicious! The highlight of our night was our server Joseph, who made sure the vibes were right throughout the evening, from bringing out the bourbon ice cream float with a birthday candle and telling us about the restaurant when we moved to the lounge. Was recommended this place for its food. Came in for a dinner and was greeted by a host that told us that the wait was 20-30 minutes. This was reasonable so we asked if we could walk outside nearby while we waited. We were told yes and off we went. As we were returning, we received a text message from the host telling us our table was ready. We returned within 2 minutes and were told that our spot was removed from the wait list and were told that we would have to wait as they seated others behind us. We will take our business elsewhere. Maybe the host was having a tough day but I hope they treat their customers with greater respect because no food is worth putting up with this type of customer service. read more

Absolutely in love with the Fern Bar! This place is definitely on the more expensive side, but offers the best cocktails in Northern California. You can tell that the bartenders are very well qualified, and know exactly what they are doing. I've also had the pleasure to try out some of their food items, which have always been very well seasoned. Oh, and don't get me started with the ambience of this establishment. Definitely the biggest reason why this place took over my heart. I knew from the moment that I saw pictures, that I needed to go. I was seeking a memorable California Cuisine dining experience for a date with my partner (who prefers Vegetarian, Gluten Free, and non-alcoholic drink options) -- and Fern Bar was perfect (with a caveat at the end of this review). Their menu clearly indicates which dishes are Gluten Free / Celiac Safe, Vegetarian / Vegan, as well as Dairy free. I'm so grateful for this, because it takes all of the (allergen-based) guesswork out of what to order. As a drink focused resturaunt, Fern Bar also offered plenty of inventive and tasty non-alchoholic house cocktails (and they also offer NA versions of classic cocktails as well). Everything we ordered was DELICIOUS. I also think that the portions were perfect. I typically find that dishes at California Cuisine / Upscale places like this to be too tiny for the price point-- but at Fern Bar the two of us were satisfied with sharing an appetizer (GF Kimchi Pancake), Share plate (Falafel), and Entree (black bean masa cakes). This was not a cheap date, but I felt that the price was right for the quality of the meal and drinks for this special occassion. We were seated outside on a pleasant spring evening. The weather was nice, and he patio is well lit and includes heaters to keep the temperature cozy. MAJOR CAVEAT: When seated outside, we could hear ALL of the music from the bar arcade next door. It was far too loud ! It was a Saturday night, so the barcade was in full swing pumping 2010s club hits into the evening air. Personally, I was amused by the music-- but the volume inhibited our ability to have a conversation over dinner. This situation may be unique to weekend evenings, when the barcade is more popular, and I don't think Fern Bar has any control over the barcade's music volume... But in this case, the next door bar's music was our music that particular evening. If that sounds like an issue at all for you, dining inside may be a better option. I only briefly peaked inside, but Fern Bar seemed to have cozy boho decor and plenty of foliage. So I would imagine dining inside would be a good experience :) read more

I loved the decorations throughout the restaurant; there was something cool to look at at every corner. 5/5 Long Thailand Iced Tea: It's not strong in terms of alcohol content, but the drink tasted so good! It was very well made and blended. 4/5 Aged Fries: Significantly better than your regular fast-food fries! 5/5 Fried Chicken: I don't usually order fried chicken at dine-in restaurants, but I'm glad I did. This place is absolutely stunning with a drink menu that outshines many local eateries. We've tried a few drinks from their regular cocktail menu like the Grow A Pear, and Bloody Mary. Each were super flavorful and full of unique ingredients. I also tried one from their vintage cocktails menu, the Clover Club, and it was not only tasty but so beautiful. The chicken sandwhich was very flavorful and fresh tasting. The fries are nothing to write home about. Overall this is a wonderful spot to grab some drinks and a bite to eat. Service is better at the bar from what we've experienced. The reason I'm not giving a 5 star review is because of the gnat issue. The plants are beautiful but some of them seem to be infested by gnats. There were gnats flying all around us both times we visited there. Went in for happy hour for the first time. There was 3 of us, we were sat in the overflow section. I asked to be seated at the booth by the bar. The hostess told me it was reserved for a bigger party. As we are leaving I see 2 employees seated folding silverware in the booth I asked for with drinks in champagne glasses. I was taken back that the hostess lied to my face and the fact that they were doing that in front of patrons. We ordered the fish dip with saltine crackers and they give you like 5 crackers and we asked for more. They charged us a dollar a saltine cracker. Hostess on August 31st is either racist or particularly incompetent with their reservation system. We walked in and let the hostess know we had a reservation and I gave her both of my names. Both times she scrolled through her tablet and said we weren't there. I had to pull out my phone with the emailed reservation confirmation for her to finally magically see my name on her screen. For an establishment that has a number of Asian inspired dishes such as steam buns, kimchijeon, and mushipan... they sure aren't very friendly to Chinese clientele. My husband and I still ended up ordering quite a bit: roasted tomato cheese dip, baked potato gnocchi, fries, fried chicken, mushi-pan, creamsicle, mandarin soda. The fries were way too greasy for us and the Mushi-Pan 蒸しパン wasn't the right consistency as it was undercooked. Everything else though tasted good. I loved the floral notes and the hint of saltiness from the almond foam on Neighbor's Bounty. It was absolutely delicious without being too sweet. Whiskey for Breakfast is one of the most unique cocktails that I have ever had where the Bourbon was fat-washed with browned butter and the cocktail came with a piece of torched bacon. It was a mixture of smoky, salty, and spice from the bourbon. Tommy was our bartender and he was great! He is clearly great at his job and was very friendly. We went here to celebrate a friend's birthday. The location inside is beautiful with plants everywhere mixed in with a modern gastropub vibe. Though I chose the outside area when I made the reservation, which had zero vibe and was basically dining in a parking lot. There was no way of changing our dining area after seeing the two options. Luckily, the food and drink compensated for the lack of ambiance. I ordered the trout and mushrooms in a green curry sauce. The fish was cooked to be perfection, it was light and flavorful. The sauce was smooth and a bit tangy. The presentation was set up nicely and the bright green sauce made it look like delicious, even before I had the first bite. My friend's entrees were also wonderful ranging from a gigantic smash burger with so many fries (pro-tip: order the aioli sauce on the side) to the pork belly with rice. All of our dishes were well-prepared and fantastic. The only thing I'd fix is the dining out in a parking lot. Next time I will know better that inside is where it is at! read more

One of the most amazing dinners we had during a recent five-day trip to wine country. We decided to try Fern Bar because they had so many vegan options. The atmosphere is fun, the staff were lovely, and the food was so good! I regret ordering french fries only because I was then so full once our mains came, but the mushroom dip for the fries was so tasty! We had the umami bomb, which I kept talking about for days, and the tofu bowl. Generous portions, but despite the fries, and a very tasty bowl of pickled veg, we ate everything. I regret nothing. We stopped by Fern Bar after our Sunday Farmer's Market run. Vaccinations are required to dine indoors but it was such a gorgeous day, we went for their outdoor dining option. Having heard great things about their Smashburger, I went for that while my husband got the Pork Katsu Sandwich. Nice and crunchy on the outside but moist on the inside, delicious with the sweet and tangy bulldog sauce. Warning that it was extremely messy, so maybe not a first date type of item, but we're way past that, so saucy cheeks it is. The Smashburger was nicely cooked with wonderful flavors with their Fern Sauce sandwiched between that pillowy potato bun. I can't necessarily say it was worth $20 especially when there was an additional $3 charge if you want avocado. If you chose all 3 add-ons (avocado, bacon, egg), it would be almost $30. What I surprisingly thought was worth the higher than expected price tag was their mocktail. Priced the same as their alcoholic counterpart and even more than the sparkling cocktails, their Thai and Dry was creatively delicious. Coconut water, thai tea, pineapple, orange, coconut cream foam. Service was lovely with a knowledgeable and patient server who coursed our choices for us for an enjoyable dining experience. Beignets were a sweet finish that were more donut like than a New Orleans style beignet, but the apple butter dipping sauce made them a must try. I can't wait to come back here. My girlfriend took me here last weekend and I was very impressed. I mean the decor alone inside already had me intrigued but when I started looking at the menus I started to get more hype. I was impressed with how extensive their cocktail menu was(and even mocktails that are tasty too!). I will say that I remember that we parked on a street around the corner so I'm not exactly what the total deal with parking is in the Barlow. I know theres parking in the area but just not sure all the options. I'm sure you won't have a problem though if you decide to dine here. The restaurant isn't too hard to find either as I think there were signs for it. Its next to a popular brewery nearby. When we got there we didn't have to wait long. It was lunch time on the weekend. But there wasn't too many people there luckily. The waitress who served us super kind. She had cool pink hair that my g/f liked. She also was pretty attentive and checked on us at good intervals. Good stuff. Let's talk about the consumables. Drinks were pretty tasty! Lots of flavor on all the drinks. I will say being a person who drinks a lot, the cocktails did seem ever so slightly on the lighter side but depth of the flavors made up for that imo. The food was really good. My burger was super juicy and even despite that the bun held well. I was very impressed. I know this isn't something I normally say but...I really like the veggies in the burger. I think it was fresh kale? It had a good crisp and it tasted fresh at least. The onions were good too. I not normally a fan of pickled onions but with the cheese and everything together I felt it worked really well. Fries were cooked a little longer than they normally were for that crispiness which is always welcomed. This place is amazing. I don't think there was a single item that we were not impressed with. It seemed under-seasoned, and it came with a massive amount of sauce, which I wasn't really a fan of either. The interior was very nice, but the lighting was a little dim for my tastes. Stopped by for a Sunday lunch. Using the Resy we made a reservation for the outdoor patio. When I arrived to check in, the hostess asked for everyone's ID for indoor dining. Each person has to show their drivers license. Not sure what was required before hand. After ordering, it did not even seem like it was ten minutes and the food arrived! This was before the lunch rush. I ordered the Pork Katsu sandwich. Which was an oversized Pork katsu thinly sliced and perfectly breaded. The Bulldog sauce seems to be a mix of bbq sauce and katsu sauce. And the sautéed red cabbage was a prefect combo on the sandwich. I have to say, the sandwich was delicious and I had bulldog sauce all over my face, and destroyed a new white cloth napkin in the process. I had one third of a smash burger. A nice crust and also delicous flavors. The pickled onions gave some tartness and great beef flavor. I could not figure out the fern sauce but it was great. Fries for both, nicely cooked and I gobbled up all the fries. Not pictures was the drinks. I ordered the "Thai and Dry", which had a great Thai Tea flavor with a bit of coconut and foam to make it all creamy. I would definitely get this again. Ordered the egg and cheese sandwich which is offered with a side of French fries. To drink, I requested the only IPA from the only 3 beer offerings they had, and they were out of the IPA. This is ironic given the word Bar is in their name. I settled for a glass of Prosecco. Sandwich was grilled, crispy, and flavorful. However, it was drenched in olive oil and very greasy, leaving a puddle of grease on my plate and coating my hands. The serving of fries was run of the mill. The sandwich was $24 and my tiny glass of prosecco was $14. Service was a bit slow at first, however the server was friendly and attentive. Dogs are allowed at outside seating. The outdoor seating area ambiance is industrial meets bamboo forest. Given the greasy sandwich experience and the price point, as well as many other food and drink options within the Barlow Marketplace, I'd be more likely to try a different place the next time I'm in the area. read more

I went to the Cheese Festival yesterday and Fern Bar came highly recommended. Naturally when my husband suggested we go out to eat tonight, I thought of this place. I went online to make reservations, and entered my phone number and email. Apparently I needed to get a confirmation, so my fault our reservations didn't go through correctly (my fault). The one who greeted us at the door a few minutes after we walked in said we could sit at the bar until a table opened up which would be only a few minutes. Fine. We three sat at the bar...and sat for about 8 minutes before the bartender acknowledged us saying she would get us water. Water showed up very quickly, in a carafe with three small glasses. I was excited to get a cocktail, as it is my birthday weekend. After about 12 minutes the floor manager said our table was ready. It was RIGHT next to the small stage with a live small band. The music was NOT loud, and was mellow jazz. It was not too loud to hold a conversation, which was excellent. Very pleasant surprise. We scanned the menus again (they were given to us when we sat at the bar) and were ready to order for a while. Eventually we were asked if we wanted drinks. I chose Kyoto Sour, the others had water. The waiter, Conner F, took our neighbor's order (they had appetizers and drinks already) and then came directly to us. He is young, bright eyed and seems a bit new-ish. No problem, and we placed our orders. Got my drink and it was delicious! Matcha powder on top made it different-my husband wasn't a fan. He's a simple man. The meal came, Bone Marrow for my mom, and Umami Bomb (mushroom with crunchy rice) for me. Husband's Smash Burger came a minute later. The food? Devine! Very tasty, even the fries. No one checked on us. The floor manager(FM) checked on the table next to us several times (it was a birthday, so extra attention was warranted for the birthday person), and the one next to that a few times. I had to raise my hand to four different people to get napkins(including the FM, who seemed to see me but went to birthday guy instead) and ...husband's hands were greasy now from the burger and could not pick up his glass to drink water. Finally, we got napkins and forks etc. We ate. We admired the decor, which was very pleasing and the positioning of the layout which was not square and boring, but more homelike with even a bookshelf behind us. The food: Bone Marrow was two bones with a skinny section of marrow and that part was delicious. I did ask why her spoon was actual silver (ours were stainless) and the busser/not Conner said it is just served with a smaller spoon. I figured it was the taste with silver rather than SS but whatever. Mom liked it, I am happy. The Umami Bomb has slightly fried crisp rice below fried kale and broccoli, with mushrooms and also was very tasty-normally I would not get mushrooms at a restaurant but I am glad I chose this. Hubby's fries were in a copper cup, and the cheese was perfectly melted. It looked like kale on it, and he said that was crunchy-I didn't taste it but it looked yummy and he said it tasted good. Once done, we were sitting there commenting on the decor, then chatting a bit...and ten minutes passed with empty plates in front of us. I finally mentioned we had not been checked on and my party agreed. Meanwhile the table next to us was served hand and foot including a birthday (candlea and all) churro dish (very cute, looked delicious as well). I wanted to tell the birthday guy happy Birthday and that mine was Friday but I refrained as he was a chatterbox the whole time they were there, enough that my husband commented he never stopped talking, lol. Clearly having a great time! I finally stacked our dishes after 12 minutes being done-hoping this would signal that we were, in fact, done with dinner. Our plates were all empty for that long. I got my one drink and the water carafe was about an inch from the bottom. Finally, the FM came by and said, 'thank you for stacking the dishes' and scooped them up. Then she gave the ticket to Conner (about four feet from us) who placed it on the table-after he asked if we needed anything else seconds before she handed it to him. I said no, thank you. The payment options didn't allow "cash tip" only "no tip" because it was a swipe at the table which I don't like at any restaurant, frankly. I am old school, and prefer to leave a cash tip but handing that swiper back with "NO TIP" falsely screaming at the server is uncomfortable. My younger kid is a server...tips make or break your night. I passed on another drink and dessert, because I was ready to go. I would have gotten a 2nd drink and a dessert to share had I been checked in with. After waiting way too long for napkins, never getting checked on during the meal and then having to wait extra long and stack our dishes to get any attention I was done being there. Quite possibly the coolest restaurant I've been to in the last decade! I adored every little detail about Fern Bar :) First of all, I've never been to Sebastapol. Shame on me! I came here on a weeknight with two co-workers; I would have never found this spot on my own. Secondly, I'm a sucker for plant-based anything, including decor. I loved the tropical-cozy-vintage ambiance; it made me wish at least one room of my apartment could look like the bar area! Let's move onto the cocktails...They taste just as pretty as they look, with just the right amount of kick. There's this creamy matcha something that I couldn't stop sipping all night. I think I had three (and no, I wasn't driving!). Then the food...SPLENDID! SO. MANY. VEGGIE. OPTIONS.! You HAVE to get the falafel plate, the oniony-pancake thing, fries, and just about anything that tickles your fancy. My meat-eater co-workers were also super pleased with the veggie items. And finally, service was right on point. Everything is shared, and our server made the right recommendations about how much food to order. Service was down to earth, prompt, professional, kind and cheerful. Food was slightly clumsy in execution but tasty. Example my dish was topped with fried broccoli rabe (the umami bomb) and the broc was four inches long with stalks and leaves (which is fine) and difficult to cut through therefore sort of forcing me to shove the whole giant thing in my mouth. It was fine but that is what I mean by clumsy. The ambiance is fun. Sort of a late 70s early 80s vibe. We had the fries which were yummy with great sauces. The Umami Bomb which was very tasty. A cocktail whiskey for breakfast - very tasty The smash burger for my picky 15 year old. He was slightly annoyed he had to pick the pickled onions off that were not listed on the menu. Black bean masa cake which was also very flavorful My kiddo also had the house root beer and enjoyed that. We finished the meal when Brandy Alexander's (they were sort of meh - nothing wrong with them but they didn't wow us) and Churros - strongly rec the churros as they were clearly house made and had a tasty dipping sauce. read more

$24 for a fried chicken sandwich with a side of fries - I expected deliciousness. One bite and I felt wronged for the ordinary lunch that was brought to me: my fries were warm (not hot) and the chicken wasn't crispy. read more

Such a great place! We had the chicken sandwich, fried egg sandwich and the chicken salad. All were great. Even though we were seated outside cuz we had our dog with us the service was absolutely fantastic. The 2 servers rotated and checked on us frequently.
