'Ferlini ..you, me & la jolla'

Ferlini Coffee is the latest to open shop. Located on Pearl St., easy to spot as there's always a line of people a few doors away for tacos or bagels and street parking can be a challenge. First time stepping foot inside this smallish cafe, which made the best of limited space with nicely decorated interior: banquet style seats and marble top cafe tables. Scintillating ball of ornate glass lighting is bellisimo but had sloppy exposed wiring. Walls of vinyl records while cool background music but didn't play anything Italian classics as one would expect from an Italian themed cafe. Additionally, the cool theme is diminished as soon as you see people a few feet away sloppily eating their burger and fries, since there is no wall separating the burger shop from this cafe. The counter had a case of empanadas that looked not so fresh as it was under a heating lamp :( The pastries did not look appealing either. The drink menu looked promising and I ordered their signature drink: Tiramisu latte iced. The only staffer was non conversational but was efficient as he prepared the drink. This iced Tiramisu latte looked better than it tasted. In fact, the truth of the matter is it was a complete disappointment: lacked the strong espresso I expected and had zero tiramisu flavor. All that brown powder on top had zero taste of chocolate and was too much that one could choke on it :(( I told the staff about this horrible drink and he was clueless, possibly didn't even understanding English. He should have offered to make a new drink or add a shot of espresso but no such offer. I was livid, what a waste of time and $$. Despite this nicely decorated cafe, their signature tiramisu latte was so flavorless and weak that will probably make this my first and last time here...Ultimo, Ciao!!

For a while, this downtown La Jolla suite was solely occupied by a vendor selling empanadas. You can still purchase such savory pastries, however the business is now Ferlini Coffee. There were very limited parking spaces out front so the best bet was to find a curbside spot on a side street. A few small round tables were placed in front a cushioned bench for seating. Hot and cold drinks (e.g. smoothies), pastries, cookies, and other desserts were on the menu in addition to empanadas that were on display inside a heated case at the service counter. Not all six empanada types were available during my visit. I selected the Beef, Chicken, and Sweet Corn & Basil for my order along with a Strawberry Smoothie. The worker (owner?) was kind enough to include a complimentary Chocolate Chip Walnut cookie. The empanadas were of decent size, and the best of the trio was the Sweet Corn & Basil. Maybe because it had a sweeter filling than the two meaty varieties. The smoothie was typical while the cookie was soft and chewy. I enjoyed my experience at Ferlini Coffee to give it a four star rating.

Once I saw their menu included the salted brown butter oat milk latte I had to see if it tasted like the New York trendy one. It was delicious! I would totally come back for this one drink, so sweet and salty! They unfortunately ran out of basically all of their pastries except the banana bread once we got there at 1pm but the bread was good! The empanada had a great filling too. I thunk my only note is the place is small and I feel like the vibes could be more dark, maybe with low lighting or stained glass windows. I wish it was almost tucked away because I am getting lowfi record bar. Also parking is limited since it's in downtown La Jolla.

Stopped by for a quick caffeine fix and cashier was friendly. I saw alcohol on the shelves and she mentioned they are not yet serving that, but will be coming soon. I got an Americano and it was $2 for an extra shot... yikes. Has potential to be a good coffee shop but I'll skip it, not for me. They have a small parking lot, wouldn't go out of my way to have coffee here.

This cute coffee shop is close to the ocean! They have great customer service and really strong coffee. My husband and I tried the expresso, the Turkish coffee, and the Tiramisu latte. The expresso and Turkish coffee had strong, very bold flavors. The tiramisu latte had great flavor and wasn't overly sweet. Really really delicious. I also ordered a strawberry croissant, which was very good. I definitely recommend stopping by for pastries, coffee, and friendly service. They have seating inside and out. Ample street parking nearby.

Tried their tiramisu latte and really enjoyed it. It was rich, smooth, and definitely worth trying. The prices are a bit on the higher side, but I'd still come back to explore more of their drinks menu. The coffee shop itself is super cute and cozy with a great atmosphere. Parking can be a little tricky, but there is street parking available nearby.

Walked by Ferlini while in the area and stopped in since I had never seen it. First thing I noticed was how cute they have decorated their little space. Beautiful vibe with very nice carpentry work; someone has a good eye for design there. I ordered a matcha from a very nice gentleman, who I believe was the owner and he also gave me a glass of coconut water free of charge too. My friends got a latte and the strawberry banana smoothie which were all very tasty. Then, the owner brought us this pastry, it was such a kind gesture since we had been talking about how cute they were since we arrived. Beautiful place with a good vibe and great owners who care about creating an amazing cafe. Highly recommend you give them a try and check out their amazing pastries too!

The cafe is small, but the drinks are amazing. I live the decor the service and coffee. They also have some empanadas from a local vendor which is great.

Beautiful ambiance and delicious coffee. The interior gives a modern, cozy vibe that is great for a good hang out after a day at the beach, or just meeting up with friends. To add onto the experience, the staff and owner are incredibly kind. I highly recommend.

I am so glad we tried this new coffee shop in La Jolla! Definitely some of the best coffee in the area. The service is amazing and the owner and staff are so kind and friendly. The salted brown butter oat milk latte is well balanced and creamy. They finish all of the drinks in front of you, adding a unique experience. The strawberry puree that they use is so fresh (not artificial at all). While the shop is small and attached to another restaurant, the space is decorated so elegantly that you barely notice.

Cute little coffee spot! Our drinks were delicious, the tiramisu latte and strawberry matcha were made to perfection ! We ordered a yummy strawberry croissant, which was still light and not overly sweet just perfect balance. The owner was very sweet and made sure everything was made to our liking! This place is a hidden gem for sure!

Very nice small cafe connected to the 858 burger restaurant next door. The barista was nice and quick, and poured the syrup and espresso/matcha into the lattes in front of us, very fancy and fun! He also added dried grapefruit garnish which was a nice touch. Lack of chairs and bathroom inside.

I prefer the spinach, mushroom and beef empanadas. I tried the Malbec beef but it was too mushy and sweet for me. I'll stick with the traditional one, with olives. I lived in S. FL and baked empanadas are everywhere and usually were $1.50 each (now maybe $2.00-$2.50) so it does bug me to pay $4.00 for an empanada. On the other hand, they make a great snack or meal, depending on how many you get. And they are not as easy to find here, especially baked, so I'll keep coming to Parana.

Empanadas are stuffed turnovers, originally from Spain and Portugal, and eaten widely across South America, including Argentina, Paraguay and also eaten in Mexico, Puerto Rico and the Phillipines too. They are a delight and delicious! This spot is an Argentinian place and I got 3 empanadas. They have many different stuffed options and I chose a beef, mushroom and spinach as my three. I asked how spicy the spicy beef one is and the very nice lady working said it was about 5/10, so I passed. She said it wad spicy, unfortunately, I cannot handle too spicy. So far, I have eaten the beef and spinach one and like them both. I was given chimichurri sauce, but I dont think I like this version, its a little too lemony for me. I like a more parsley forward chimichurri and this one too sour for me. For 3 empanadas, it was about $11, which isnt too bad! The empanadas are delicious and I will def be back again and again!!

I can only speak about my dish as I didn't have a taste of the other meal. I had the El Vainero (sweet corn pancake with Mano cheese, shredded beef, black beans and plantains). The flavors were so amazing together. You will just have to try it. I also ordered yuca fries. The three types of "sauces" were mild, medium, and hot. All three were tasty in their own way and I enjoyed all of them with the yuca fries and towards the end of my meal, it added a little kick to my dish. As for beverages, we had water and I ordered the hot chocolate. I know, hot chocolate, but it was so good. I love an authentic cup of hot chocolate with a bit of real whip cream and some cinnamon. In all, our experience at Encuentro Cafe was great from the service to the food. It is very intimate and we ate in the covered patio. It was as it would be eating outside with tropical decor. Not crowded and noise level as it would be eating in an enclosed patio, not too noisy with the sounds of Old Town patrons walking/driving down the street. I will definitely look forward to visiting this restaurant again when I visit San Diego.

As a Colombian who has been craving authentic Colombian cuisine since my last visit to New York in…read moreDecember, I can confidently say this restaurant truly satisfied those cravings. Being nearly eight months pregnant, my expectations were especially high, and it is rare to find a place that meets them so well. From the seasoning of the food to the warm and attentive service, everything about this restaurant stands out. Although I don't recall my server's name, he was incredibly kind and provided excellent service throughout. The ambiance is also worth noting--the space is large, offers plenty of seating options, and even features a large TV, making it a great spot to relax or watch sports. To start, I ordered a watered mango juice along with a beef empanada. The empanada exceeded my expectations--despite being on the smaller side, it was packed with flavor. I enjoyed it so much that I ordered five more to go, which speaks for itself. They were served with fresh ají, a traditional sauce that complemented them perfectly. For my main course, I had the carne asada plate, which included steak, rice, beans, sweet plantains, avocado, tomato slices, and a small arepa. Every component of the dish was well-executed--the beans were flavorful, the meat was well-seasoned, and the overall plate felt authentic. It is often difficult to find truly authentic Colombian food, especially in San Diego, where options are limited or not genuinely Colombian. This restaurant, however, delivers on authenticity and flavor. The portion size was generous, and I ended up taking leftovers home to enjoy later. In addition to the empanadas (two chicken and three beef), I also ordered a buñuelo and a cheese arepa to go. Unfortunately, these items did not meet the same standard. The arepa lacked flavor and was overly greasy, and the buñuelo was dry and similarly oily, even after absorbing excess grease from the bag. Overall, I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for Colombian food, especially given how rare it is to find quality options in this area. Friends of mine visited recently as well and thoroughly enjoyed their bandeja paisa, further confirming the consistency of the food. I will definitely be returning--especially for those empanadas.
