When I saw that the buns were made an hour prior to my purchase, I was confident that it would be pretty good. When the buns turned out to be substandard, it's a disappointment. The buns lacked freshness that you would expect. It tasted on the stale side. Even the fillings in the buns had me questioning the quality. Stopped in yesterday to bring some treats to my mother who is in the hospital down the road. I have been a happy customer at Fay Da bakeries before, but this was my first time at this location. Bottom line... old food, rude service. First, I was the only person in the bakery but it still took a few minutes for one of the 3 workers behind the counter to pay attention to me for me to pay. Then, the cashier wanted me to exchange the bill I was paying with because it had a 1/4 inch tear. I said the bill was whole, nothing was missing and she had to take it. She then had to discuss it with the 2 other workers they waved it around, looked at it from different angles, and argued in Chinese before begrudgingly accepting it. Again, this was a completely whole $10 bill with a miniscule tear in the middle, probably from being folded too many times. I then asked (3x) if she could please cut the pastries in half and she said yes twice then threw them in the bag whole. When I asked again, she asked me "I don't understand, why do you want to do that?" After explaining that my mother is in the hospital for a few days and probably could not eat a whole pastry she begrudgingly did it. When we got to the hospital, the pastries definitely tasted off. WHY FAY DA oh WHY are your Bubble Tea prices so high??? For a regular sized Bubble Tea, it's priced around $2.95 a pop, but in regards to flavor, spending the extra $.50 is TOTALLY worth it! The Milk Bubble Tea was nothing less than awesome -they had just the RIGHT amount of ice to keep it cold, but not enough to kill the sweet flavor of the tea. I have never tried Chinese or Korean bakeries before so I thought I should give it a try them both, I was told Korean style bakeries are pretty similar to Japanese style. and yes they are pretty similar but I found they have less variation of choice and they are just ok to me. Nothing more than avarage Japanese bakeries. And now Chinese bakeries...omg..they are amazing.I didn't know Chinese pastries taste so great. They have various kind of pastries I have never seen and all look so flattering! No I mean thier pastries are not too much decorated with a lot of chocolaty/honey coated or anything, just being there look simple, but all those names like coconuts/ pinapple/shredded pork/scallion/taro/lemmon kind of buns etc really got my attention .They are all new to me and It was hard to stop myself want to try them all at once!! Yumyumyummyyyy Fay Da is a standard chinese bakery, I've tried a couple different things from here & their pastries are pretty good .. BUT I've recently tried their ice coffee with tapioca and mind was blown. Their coffee is so delicious its the perfect taste of coffee slightly sweet creamy and everything I loveee about coffee, NO POWDER UP IN HERE !!!!! Also, their tapioca is surprisingly decent .. not as good as TenRen of course but its not bad for a bakery. I was hanging around here a while back and because I said I wanted pastries, my friend drove me here. Well, it's Fay Da. It's just like any other Fay Da except this one has a lot more seats and room. As always I try out their buns and custards. It's nothing special but definitely tasty and their buns are on the drier side. I'm happy I got a seat that day because despite the amount of seats they have, I'm assuming their place is always packed. All the workers there are Mandarin-speaking it seems but it doesn't mean their service is not efficient. They help you right away with what you want. One thing that I don't recommend here are their bubble teas. Way way too sweet to be good. Just come here for the buns. read more

Love their tuna bun. Visually pleasing and flavorful. It is a tuna salad bun. The flavor is just right, a touch of salt and pepper, simple yet delicious. Got their small hot coffee with milk and two sugars along with the sweet roast pork bun to go. Just the perfect breakfast combo. I decided to just get my coffee here instead of my usual deli since I am running late. Never thought coffee from bakeries would taste good, but it actually had a rich dark roast flavor, enough to wake me up and kick start the day. I got their chestnut birthday cake a couple of years back. Unfortunately, the chestnut tasted a tad sour as if it was about to go bad, but still edible. Pastries are pretty good and they have great coffee. But, last year I had an odd experience with a cashier and I haven't gone back since. She demanded (she didn't ask, demanded) that I speak Mandarin to her. She said she can only understand Mandarin. I understand a bit of Mandarin but can't speak the language. I've been going to Fay Da bakeries since I was a in Elementary school (almost 20 years), but this place has big selection of breads, cakes, pastries, drinks and even some selected dim sums for a cheap cheap price. The service was not always good here and most of the staff don't speak English. Just pick up a tray and tongs, and pick up what looks good. The breads and pastries are usually fresh. The cakes and desserts may not be fresh, but you can pre-order a cake to be made fresh. They also have a big selection of smoothies, bubble teas, coffee, milk tea, iced drinks and regular flavored teas. read more

My favorite sweet thangs are the Egg Custard Tart, Sweet Topping Bun and Choco-Walnut bun. All delicious and the buns are always chewy and doughy, just the way I like it. Their regular breads are good too. If you have their cold ham and egg sandwich in the fridge, you'll see what I'm talking about. I bought an 8" Japanese cheesecake for $15. This cheesecake was absolutely delicious. It's light and fluffy, yet creamy and moist, all at the same time. It's unlike American cheesecakes--it's way better! This cake isn't decorated like the other ones and is rather plain looking but I would rather have Japanese cheesecake over regular spongecake with decorative cream that I wouldn't eat. Plus, all the decorative cakes are around $16 for a 6" vs this $8 for almost the same price. I think if you preorder (which I didn't--have to do 5 days in advance), you can order one with decorations. I asked the workers to write happy birthday and they gave me a little cake topper that said it instead. I have had some better ones in Chinatown. I like a flaky crust, this was not. I also had a Taro pastry, which was pretty good too, but again, nothing amazing. The pictures, addresses, and reviews for the two Fay Da bakeries on Main Street seem to all be conflicting, so I'm just posting this review to both. I hate to give a 1 star review, but "Eek! Methinks not" is exactly what I think of this place. The service here was pretty bad. My boyfriend & I were ignored as we waited on the line, other people came up to the counter and were served before us. When I asked if I could have something written on the $12 marble cheesecake that we bought, they said no. What kind of bakery doesn't do that? We decided to kill some time as we waited to meet up with friends and sat at one of the tables inside. We watched as the woman working behind the counter spit on the floor. Lovely. Later on when we presented the cake to our friend who was visiting from another country, we discovered that the cake itself was actually the worst part of this whole experience. It was horrible! It tasted sour, like something in it had gone bad. Save yourself the trouble and go to Paris Baguette across the street. I'm a nit-picky person, and this is a nit-picky review. Reviewing stuff on yelp, it doesn't always have to pertain to what people go to the places for right? For instance, this particular location of Fay Da has great eggtarts, and the size of it is quite large (that's what she said). How I like to start my mornings sometimes is to buy their eggtart and a small container of their unsweetened soy milk. Now, for the nit-picky part of my experience. I cannot stop uttering this sentence in my mind whenever I enter this establishment: "This place is a diaspora for all the lifeless losers around Flushing". I say this, because it's where all the Foxwoods go-ers gather around waiting for the coach bus that'll take them to their haven, or as I like to call it, the bottomless pit. No it does not have a direct effect on the taste of their eggtarts and soymilk, unless of course if you don't consider the mental disgust I get which eventually rides through my nerves to get to my taste buds. These ill-mannered, uneducated, and miseducated breeds are what plague Flushing, and what drives out the motive for all what could have been, a decent tourist spot. read more

I visit this Fay Da after doing groceries at Hong Kong. I prefer this one over others just for quick pastries/buns/breads only because its more convenient and not as chaotic. Love love love the red bean bun and the sweet breads. Usually the sweet topping is too much just for my tasting but it easily comes off. Stopped by before work to grab some goods and saw no tongs available so went to the cashiers to ask, she ignored me so I just followed someone else and grabbed one from the counter.
