Good and bad... First the good: - Angie the waitress was super sweet. - Sweet tea was good. - Hot pepper jelly BBQ sandwich was good. Next "Could be better": - Hand cut fries and fries okra could be more crispy. Next the bad: - Bacon cheeseburger ordered medium but outside of patty was burned and rather thin compared to the bread. Burger was dry, not juicy at all. - The bun was huge, thick, and dense. - The bacon was too hard to chew, it just cracked when bitten down on. - Coleslaw was supposed to be sweet and creamy but it tasted old and stale. Did not look very creamy, looked vinegar based. - Picture of burger on store front did not look the same as the burger served. Fatback's has been opened for a few years. In the past before I joined Yelp!, I had the pepper jelly BBQ pork sandwich that I picked up and was impressed with it. However, I never came back because at one time, it had only a 2 and half star rating, plus Full Moon BBQ is like my favorite BBQ joint. My brother picked Fatback's for his birthday so we went! Fatback's is in a strip besides Winn Dixie. Some people don't like that about BBQ joints but I have never had trouble with that. The atmosphere looks like a good place to catch a football game as there are a few TV's mounted high on both walls and football schedules below them. My sweet tea was refreshingly sweet and brewed fresh so it was a good start. My entree was the brisket plate with deviled egg potato salad and sweet and smokey beans. I was surprised with how good all of it was. The brisket was tender with a good flavor and they gave me an excellent size portion. No stinginess here! The potato salad tasted like a deviled egg without the egg. Fantastic potato salad! The beans were very impressive....no canned beans here! Just like their name, they were sweet and smokey and never had any beans like them anywhere else. The brisket plate was $15....a good price and excellent size portions. Fatback's have 5 BBQ sauces that you have to request. I liked them all. My favorite was the vinegar. It was made from malt vinegar with some sweetness and spices added to it. But it didn't go well with the brisket. There was a mustard one, which was my least favorite. It was just too mustardy but it was ok. They had a sweet sauce which was ketchup based and my 2nd favorite. Then they had a house BBQ sauce in mild and hot. The house BBQ sauce is a tomatoey, tangy sauce. Where I'm conflicted about Fatback's is that I have heard and seen by some reviews, they charge for BBQ sauce. That automatically gets a star reduction for me. Why should I have to pay for BBQ sauce at a BBQ joint? But they did not charge me for the sauces at least this time. In my opinion, there are a lot of so-so BBQ joints in Dothan. But Fatback's separated themselves from the pack to claim 2nd (behind Full Moon). I will be back and hopefully not charged for BBQ sauce. read more

This is pretty much your average BBQ restaurant. Started with the cheese curds and they were good. Seemed handmade and tasted fresh. I had the 3 way platter with pork, ribs and brisket. The ribs were good, the brisket was ok and the pork was subpar. The spicy bbq sauce was tasty and the corn nuggets were standard premade nuggets. My meal was supposed to come with Texas toast, but that never happened. My son got the pork platter with baked beans and Mac and cheese. The BBS tasted like beans in tomato sauce and the Mac and cheese did not taste homemade. Service was ok, she did vanish quite often. I have ate here a handful of times and each time my food was absolutely awful. The wings are always soggy. One time they brought me the complete wrong order. The service is always slow. Friendly staff with quick service. Clean environment. Got the BBQ sandwich and side of potato salad. The BBQ was too dry for my taste but douching in the accompanying sauce made it alright. Was pleasantly surprised by the size of the side dish tho. BF got the pork on a cow burger, one of their specialty, which was basically just pulled pork on top of a burger. Well my mother and I had heard that they were the best in town so we decided to meet there for lunch. We won't be making that mistake again! the food wasn't that great (barely any taste) and our waitress was chit chatting with her co worker within ear shot complaining about her day and dropped the F word no less than 10 times in as many minutes. Then my mother went to the lady's room a few minutes after our waitress came out. to find that there was no soap or paper towels in the bathroom. So were not sure how she washed her hands after her visit to the restroom. All in all not a pleasant experience at all. They are all good and are not astronomically priced. My only slight complaint is that they have no sauce on the table. None. Not even ketchup. I am a sauce person. I like sauce. This was quite a busy place when I visited for lunch. Only 2 waitresses and it was near a full house. They were hustling hard though, and kept a great attitude. I got a basic cheeseburger and it was delicious! The onion rings and fried pickles were a little soggy, the batter used is pretty thin. On the plus side, the onion rings were actual onions (none of that gross bread-y filler). I will definitely be back next time I'm craving a burger. read more

Okay - I think I have found my favorite burger ever. It was THAT good. I had the yummy pimento burger cooked perfectly. Fries were outstanding - real fries. I do agree with the other reviewers that they absolutely need to have condiments on the table. We had to ask twice for ketchup and mustard. If you don't want to have it on the table then at least ask the patrons if they would like condiments rather than them having to ask. We didn't have barbecue sauce but I agree - if you want extra, the restaurant owners should not nickel and dime their patrons. It was ok. I ordered the pork on a cow burger and the bbq pork was very bland by itself, I had to smother it with bbq sause. The bun was also right on the edge if being stale. I had the baked mac and cheese as a side. It was about tye same quality as what you would get from the frozen food section. The fries were actually really good, I recommend those. When I walked in, this place had the correct smell of a true BBQ joint. A very good sign. The nose knows. There were plenty of people in there which was another good sign. I had the pulled pork sandwich with fries. Initially the meat had a burnt acrid flavor. I discovered that the bun that had been burnt black on a small section and that had given the meat that flavor. Otherwise the rest of the meat was fine. It had a decent smoke flavor and was juicy, but not overly so. I had the spicy sauce on the side not on the meat. The sauce was a tomato base with lots of black pepper which kicked it up a notch and muted the sweetness of the tomato. There was a little vinegar in it that gave it some tang. The fries were a little soggy and limp. Decent flavor though. I'll give Fatbacks another try on a different night to see if things improve. read more

My visit to Fatback's of Dothan was underwhelming. I was very disappointed, unimpressed and underwhelmed and will probably never be back. I actually thought about trying to sell my other voucher to a patron so I wouldn't have to come back nor lose my money. The person seating us was friendly, our hostess was somewhere between "okay friendly" to "not that friendly" (not rude either, thought). I had the BBQ sandwich and my wife had the salad (and added the pork....FOUR DOLLARS...REALLY?????). What put the nail in the coffin for me though was when I asked for a little extra BBQ sauce on the side. "That'll be extra". Excuse me? "That'll be extra". How much? "I think about .49 cents". That's okay..just bring me what comes with/on it. Folks..we live in DOTHAN, AL....the SOUTH. Remember?? Hospitality. NO ONE, and I mean NO ONE, in Dothan charges their patrons EXTRA for their BBQ sauce. It wasn't the .49 cents for the little 2 oz. cup that was the point. The issue was the "chinchy-ness" of wanting to charge me for something that was hardly enough to cover the meat to start with. Anyway, good luck "thebigDdeal.com" on your sales of their vouchers. For me, I'll be putting my hard earned cash towards Gulfside Seafood Grill, Mama Goldberg's and others. Ah, I remember the days when Fatback's was the new and cool place to eat. That was about a year ago, and everyone my family and I knew were telling us to try it. Of course we agreed as we were always looking for great local eateries. Big mistake. Our waiter was the kind that I hate most, a goober trying to act cool for the crowd. He failed, and it was a fall from power that left him face down on the pavement. First, he recommended the corn as an appetizer, and we gladly complied. That is mistake #2. The corn tasted more like popcorn, literally. It was burnt and way too salty, but we remained open-minded for the main course. I'll be straight and to the point on the entrées. They sucked.
