We got here just as they opened on Saturday and a few larger parties had just come in. We started with mozzarella sticks for an appetizer and I had a diet Dr Pepper. Was super excited to see they have that good crushed ice! The mozzarella sticks were hot and fresh and they served them to us with their homemade ranch. My sister and I both got the breadsticks. Mom had a loaded baked potato and my fiance had the pulled pork sandwich lunch special. The good: mom's baked potato with all 3 meats was super good. The chicken was smoky and super tender and moist. Next time we would all probably choose just the chicken. It's a huge portion so have a big appetite if you order this. There's also a large variety of barbecue sauces on the table. We loved the mustard based one. Amanda's sauce is also smoky and a little sweet but super tasty. We didn't try the others. The okay, but I wouldn't say bad: the loaded breadsticks are good but they aren't as good as Mama Rosa's and it all comes down to the crust. Mama Rosa's are softer and cheesier. A little more buttery too. The ones at SJ's were good, but not great and the cheese seemed like it was probably pre shredded and bagged so it didn't melt down too good. No brown/caramelized areas of cheese on top, ya know? The bread was bland and sort of hard. It took a fair bit of sauce and ranch to make it have much of a taste at all because the bread really overpowered the taste of the meat and cheese. The quality of the meat on our breadsticks vs what was on mom's potato was night and day and they were almost the same meats. My fiancé's sandwich was okay but he said it wasn't anything special. We had been here quite a bit in the past for family parties, and I definitely recommend them for those. They have party rooms and great service for those parties. Service was friendly, and it seemed like a nice quaint restaurant. I absolutely loved their fried okra and fried green tomatoes (they also provided some ranch to dip them in). Not the best food Dothan has to offer. We've driven by for years and not stopped in. Many rave about this place and it always appears to be busy. We will not return. Potato wasn't very good although the bbq pork on the potato was tasty. BBQ chicken was dry and chewy. Okra was tough and chewy in places. Small portion of beans were not very good. Sauce on the bbq beans was not very good. I only took one bite from the toast. I hear their chicken salad is good though. Dark little place with wood paneling looks like many bbq restaurants. Arrived at approximately 4:00 pm. Ordered the pork sandwich special with green beans & baked beans. Included a brownie as dessert. Got home, sandwich was much smaller than what I have gotten in the past but ok. Baked beans were excellent, green beans had a great taste but too peppery for me so they got tossed in the trash. Then three hours later I checked out the brownie and it was extremely dry. Called them to let them know they might want to "pull" them because for $5.00 it wasn't worth it. I came back here after my last visit after two years ago. My granddaughter was leaving a doctor's appointment and she loves ribs. I had my older two grandchildren also First I ordered at the register They.treated me like dirt. I am not a person that makes comment about how black people are treated at businesses but this went way beyond prejudice . The only half way friendly person was the young man at the register. The older waitresses never even spoke to me. I had a children's rib plate , dessert and drinks. I am sitting g here still because she wanted this meal. I am so disappointed. By the way my other grandchildren had already eaten elsewhere. Delicious pulled pork and the sauces are fantastic. The fried pickle appetizer was delicious in addition to the sides of Brunswick stew, potato salad, fried okra. OMG it was so good!!!!! Ordered the pork sandwich with baked beans and fried green tomatoes. Well ended up eating the tomatoes and my Aunts. They were so good!!!! I made a meal just off of those. My family has used Smokey Joe's as a place for a family gathering because they have a room to hold all of us. The food isn't bad but don't expect it to be the best BBQ ever. I went with the rib and pork combo with slaw and hash brown casserole. I can't complain about the ribs. They have some kind of rub on them and the ribs are way better than the pork. The pork was dry and at times tough. The slaw is more crunchy than creamy and vinegar with a little mayo. The hash brown casserole was your standard hash browns and cheese to hold it together. There are lots of sides to choose from. Surprisingly, Smokey Joe's has a pretty extensive menu with pizza and wraps. The best part of Smokey Joe's to me were the homemade BBQ sauces. There are 4 - mild, hot, sweet and tangy, and mustard. The mild is your standard ketchup base and is mildly sweet. The hot is the hotter version of it. The sweet and tangy is a mix of vinegar and ketchup base with tastes like some honey added to it. The mustard is self-explanatory. All are made in-house and all are very pleasing. Sweet tea was wonderful! Besides the sauces and the dry pork, Smokey Joe's is just all right. read more

Sadly, after viewing Yelp's posting of this bbq establishment's menu and planning a large order for a sports event, I discovered that the owners have neglected to update their menu listing. The prices listed in their menu on Yelp are off by 50-75%. It's shocking to get to the restaurant and discover this. I asked but they would not honor the posted prices. Some items in their menu posting states "price varies" but all of the items I desired to order were listed with lower prices. My order was nearly double what I anticipated and expected. I doubt if many other customers would enter the restaurant referring to the Yelp listing the same day. I would have honored the posted price to retain good customer and community relations until the menu listing could be updated. read more

We stopped today for our second time. The service was horrible. We waited 45 minutes for our food while other parties came, ate and left. Our waitress never even came and checked on us. I called another waitress over and she told ours. 15 min later they brought the food out without any silverware. We waited another 20 minutes without anyone coming to check on us so that we could get silverware. They finally came and comped our meal. An hour later we left without eating. read more

Food really off since last visit. Brisket sandwich bun COLD-- right out of the refrigerator. Why didn't they at least heat it? Brisket VERY dry. Ribs overdone and tasteless. I went with the pork fries which had bacon, cheese and bbq on top of crinkle fries and I drizzled with the bbq sauce on the table! They were great! Bbq had a great flavor! We tried this place as the one we normally go to was not open, now it unfortunately closed! The ribs were awful, no smoke at all! Plain old rubbery ribs with barely any meat. BEST IN ALABAMA to me. 3/24/2015, 2:30pm. Pleasant casual, no-smoking atmosphere, friendly staff, excellent service. I had the Jumbo pulled pork sandwich with fries, coleslaw, and sweet tea. I also carried-out a pint of Brunswick stew. Bbq was delicious...(tender but not mushy like some.) Coleslaw was really good...obviously not some standard bulk style, and that is IMPORTANT to me. Fries were standard fare, but also good as far as "cut" and "style." The Brunswick stew was also very good, it could have had a bit more meat, but that may have just been my serving. The 4 sauces are excellent...you must try them all!! My favorite was the mustard/vinegar. Sweet tea was just right for me. Moderately priced, $18.×× for my meal and stew, and well worth it. Smokey Joe's is a great place for bbq, and I hear good things about the other menu items too. Probably the BEST that I have had in Alabama, and believe me, I have eaten a lot of bbq. (I admittedly have a bias for Carolina style bbq, and as such, am very critical.) I absolutely will be going back...I hope regularly. Very tasty and great service. You can really taste the smoke in the meat. The wings (with their hot sauce) were cooked well and smoked nicely. Pulled pork was a little dry, but the hot bbq sauce on the table was nice and fixed that right up. Sweet tea was good and strong but not bitter. But the best thing was the fried green tomatoes. The first two were great but the waitress can't get it together long enough to get us our utensils, condiments, etc. She said she would be back with those items but acted shocked when she brought my wife's salad and we still hadn't gotten them. I went to Smokey Joes for lunch. It was busy. The lady at the front register said it would be 15-20 minutes because they had no tables. It was fine. I watched a group the same size as mine walk in. They stood around for a few minutes and were seated ahead of us. There is no organization to get to a table. By the way, there were two or three tables cleaned that would have fit my group of three plus a baby. The woman at the register didn't care to get people sat in the order they arrive. Great food. Fresh and hot. Friendly staff. We have been eating at Smokey Joe's for many years and I have personally eaten almost everything on the menu.. It is all good. The in-house BBQ sauces are all awesome. You will not regret the decision to give it a try if you have never frequented this restaurant. The owners are super nice and hard working. The staff is friendly and professional. As for the charge on another review of someone being ignored because of their race, this is complete absurdity. I know it may come as a surprise, but white people have had bad experiences at restaurants and businesses run by white people as well. Every negative experience in life is not motivated by racism. In that particular case reviewed, someone apparently dropped the ball, had an off day, or maybe was a horrible employee that doesn't work there anymore. Nevertheless, anyone reading this review of a BBQ restaurant should not avoid going there because it is a "Caucasian run establishment". If an individual working in a business is perhaps a racist, how in the heck could owners and managers possibly know that before an event took place to reveal it? I know first hand that the owners are not racists in the least, so if an idiot worked there that was one, I am certain that they are no longer employed there. I wish I could give them ZERO stars .. my aunt and uncle are the most amazing, kindest, loving people you will ever come across in this lifetime my uncle is not only a v who has proudly served this country,but he is also a clergyman. It saddens me to my core the kind of service they received at this establishment. It's awful in 2020 that people are still so simple minded. This establishment is operated by predominantly Caucasian individuals, needless to say my aunt and uncle are African Americans. After enjoying some food catered from Smokey Joe's (purchased by someone else) they decided to go to the establishment and dine-in however it was not at all as expected. They sat and enjoyed one another for so long that over 30mins had passed before they realized no one offered them any service in a practically empty dining room. Once my aunt noticed the lack of service she approached one of the waitresses who wasn't the least bit concerned or apologetic for the "oversight" and blatant disrespect for their patrons; and callously asked if they still wanted to order .. seeing as how they were the only African Americans in the establishment one could only come to the conclusion that their race was the determining factor for them to be deliberately overlooked. Me and my wife have been to Smokey Joe's about six time. Being a veteran of 34 years. I never thought about color. Well being a person of color i would not recommend Smokey Joe's to anyone of color. The last time that me and my wife were there, the dinning room was not even half way full. We sat down and a older lady came over 10 minutes later. We order sweet tea with lemon and water with lemon. Received our drinks with no lemon! No problem. The older waitress took our order and left. By then other patrons came and and sat down. Well 20 minutes later the other patrons who have came in after us had already received their meals. By then my wife was getting upset. I said we will give the 10 more minutes. Then the Older waitress came over and said that our order was over looked! Unacceptable! So this was the second time that me and my wife have been treated this way. This old ass lady needs to Retire. By the way the owner came out to the dinning area and thanked everyone by table except us! He acted like we weren't even there! We pray that when judgement day comes their ticket won't get over looked! God Bless them! So if you are a person of color your hard earned money is not worth spending in this establishment. read more
