My husband and I stopped by on our way back from Florida and it was fantastic! Super attentive and nice service, we got sat right away and everything was delicious to me. My husband did not like the chicken, but I thought it was great! They had extra bbq sauce on the table and I put it on everything since it was so good! It looked older, but we loved that because it felt like we were in a little town in a ma and pop diner. It was a lot of food for how much you paid. Almost every trip we take down to Florida we pass by and it's usually busy. Or we thought.. it was probably because of the small parking lot. Finally one day it was just my husband and I on our way home from Florida and we decided to stop by. Literally at the light we made a u turn. Probably a bad idea but at least now we know. The place is definitely old but to us that made us more excited because bbq isn't clean fancy food. The lady who took our order was real nice. We ordered the meat plate. Which was ribs, beef (didn't specify), and pork (didn't specify). We just assumed brisket and pulled pork. The man in the kitchen was really helpful as well. Came up and made sure everyone standing up front was taken care of and took care of those who weren't. Now about the actual food.. it was just not.. very.. good. I'm sorry but even the fries weren't good. The packaging to go was great. They really took care in packaging everything nicely. We got silverware, napkins, ketchup, even s&p. The meats were sauced which we don't usually prefer because we like to taste the actual meat itself without sauce but we figured that was done because the meats were pretty dry. The ribs were edible. Not much flavor but just not as dry. The beef, I'm assuming tenderloin? was very dry and possibly old.. same with the pork that actually had grill marks that gave us false hopes.. after tasting we stopped eating. I've been going to Dobbs for over 50 years because it's always been the best BBQ in town. I stopped today for takeout. I waited several minutes to be noticed even though there was no one else on the takeout side and two ladies were standing behind the counter just talking. When they finally deigned to notice me as a customer, I tried to place my order. The lady rudely said "number what", use the menu. They had changed their menu. I looked at the menu and noticed that the prices had gone up again. After waiting over 10 minutes (Why? There was no one else waiting for an order) I got my order. Then I paid. Even though I paid in cash, I did not get the cash discount. Needless to say, since the people were not friendly, the service was slow, the prices were up again, and the food is not as good as it used to be, then I will no longer be a customer. read more

This place was recommended by my friend's mom. We stopped in after some shopping in Dothan. The menu said this particular restaurant had been open since 1948, and it definitely showed. The decor was old and dark. The tables and countertops were laminate and it was cracking, faded, and just not inviting. The waitress looked annoyed that we walked in and that she had to serve us. Luckily, she was promptly replaced by a much more pleasant server named Angie. Angie was great. She arrived to take care of us. The food was just not the best. I honestly don't know how they have been in business this long. I order the half chicken. It was dry and I had to keep soaking it in bbq sauce to give it some flavor. The "salad" was out of a bag. The barbecue was ok, but not really smoky in flavor and the sauce was missing something- I couldn't put my finger on it. Each trip I make to the flea market takes me by this staple in the Dothan, Al. community. Over one hundred years, Dobb's has satisfied our insatiable desire for Bar-B-Que. However, rather than being at the top of the heap of BBQ joints, the owners have allowed their name in BBQ to dilapidate. Nothing on earth satisfies a hunger quite like the home style country cooking of a Bar-B-Que pit. It has even been said that the best BBQ is found in some of the worst looking of pits. So, driving into the cracked parking lot and eyeing the half lit sign sent a rush of anticipation of what I may enjoy here. Walking into the panel walled building with it's trophy fish decor showed the history of it all. I started to wonder why the low Yelp ratings. Everything was going well. Our drinks were delivered and order taken in a reasonable amount of time. The lack in sauce choice was the start of it all. There was just one. They have a sort of soup called camp stew which looked like well blended pork and beans with extra onions which resembled baby food consistency, and same with the cole slaw. The collard greens look and tasted like it came from a can. Although everthing tasted well enough, the presentation was just off. During my gander around I noticed the deserts offered and my heart fell. Sysco! Each pie delivered by a food truck, Yuk! What a waste of a hundred year journey. Directly behind Dobbs is a restaurant called Hunts Seafood and Steaks. My speculation is it is perhaps run by relatives of the Dobbs. I will find out when I drive around the BBQ pit to try them. Dobbs is a pretty simple, no frills added place, offering some really decent food along with excellent, friendly service; sort of the true Southern hospitality type of service. They start you off with a "camp" soup/stew, which is rather extraordinary in having good consistency as well as a slight smoked barbecue flavor. Over all, however, Dobson's is sort of a roadside attraction type of place with a popular following of people from all ages and backgrounds. You have the college kids on the way to or from the beaches of Panama, the truck driver, the tourists and then the local's just out to get some decent "Q." There main offering is Bar-B-Qued pork which is served sort of shredded or sliced. I had the shredded and found it to be too stewy like for my tastes, but I'm no expert on it, so I can't criticize it. The menu however is wide and varied with something that should please most any palate. The best thing, however, is that friendly, charming Southern spirit of the wait staff. Maybe because of my old age, I sort of got to enjoy being called sugar, honey buns, sweetheart, cutie pie and the like. I mean even if they didn't mean it, they sure enough came off sincere enough to please me. After yesterday's disappointing bbq meal in northern Alabama from the hickory pit, i was craving some good. Bbq - guess what ? I'll still have to wait since this place didnt serve it. Again we got a family meal (samples) of sliced beef (which i assumed was brisket- wrong), not only did it not have any smoke taste it was dry and most likely a sliced roast . Also got chopped pork, looks like they put it in the blender (and also dry ), half a slab of ribs, cooked good but flavorless. I truly should've stuck with my gut instinct here from the first pack of Equal I opened. The contents were brown, and then I noticed the variety of off brands of the same sweetener all were discolored like they'd been soaked in tea. The substance did not dissolve. So if you want a place that can screw up tea, this is it. I say this because I wanted to set the tone for the rest of the meal. I ordered the pork bbq plate, "chipped", baked beans, collard greens and fries. Visually, the meat looked like mushy meat with red sauce mixed through it and then red sauce on top. Though there was sauce it was dry. The flavor was very much like ketchup with a little vinegar added. Reminded me of elementary school bbq when I was a child. Maybe that helps with the description. The baked beans were very firm. Flavor was very mediocre. Fries...the frozen variety just heated up. Collard greens were the one thing I had a few forkfuls of to sustain me until my next meal. My friend had the combo plate, which the only thing that distinguished the three meats from one another was that the two ribs were still on the bone. No smoky flavor and all lacking moisture. Was more crumbled and gray looking and had none of that flavorful liquid from the fat when you slow smoke meat. The fried okra was again, the frozen variety and heavily breaded. I'm really not sure how this place is in business. My advice: If you're on way home from a nice vacation, don't ruin it by stopping here. You know, I think 2 stars is fair. I'll go 3 just due to service. The service was good. Our server was certainly prompt and friendly as was everyone else. Their (I forget their name for it) Brunswick stew was their best thing we had. The coleslaw as passable for sure. However, there are standards when it comes to BBQ meat. Dobb's meat just didn't cut it. Why was the meat so bad? Well, I went out to the car to get some asprin for the wife and I got nosey. I decided to look for stacks of wood and meat smoking apparatus. What did I find? Nothing. The meat tasted like it had a shortcut 'BBQ' process and after my sleuthing, I confirmed it. If the place had been special the food might be forgiven. I should've skipped this place and trusted the reviews. My husband had eaten there YEARS ago and said they had the best strawberry shortcake so we decided to try it again. For openers, if you think the best barbecue is usually found in the worst part of town, in a place with bars on the windows, and just enough grease on the table to write your initials - then this isn't it. And if you think it can be found where the highway crosses the main drag in a small Alabama town, you'd only be partially, very partially, right. What this is, is Dobb's in Dothan, Alabama - a restaurant with a 107 year history that began in an even smaller town before up sizing to Dothan and the brick building where the sign has been hanging since 1948. For a guy who has spent a lifetime in pursuit of the perfect barbecue (read my more than 100 barbecue reviews from across the country on Yelp), this is a name known well - think Big John Robinson in Peoria, Arthur Bryant in Kansas City, the McNeely boys in Memphis and Big Daddy Bishop in Tuscaloosa. Well known, but sadly a little worn, maybe getting by on their reputation rather than their 'cue. The best of the day's offering was the chicken; nice light smoke flavor and not darkened. Moist. The pulled pork was good, but short of the chicken's high water mark with the brisket and ribs vying for last place among the barbecue entries. And maybe t that's part of the problem. Dobbs' kitchen not only has to turn out barbecue, but also offers (as they put it, "for those who do not prefer barbecue") hamburgers, spaghetti and who knows what else. If we had wanted spaghetti, a barbecue joint would not have been our first choice. A word or few about the sauces: they offer one main sauce which is just another nothing to distinguish it barbecue sauce. But making it interesting, they have a couple homemade hot and hotter sauces on the table that'll take the enamel off your teeth and are for sale for those who'd like to get even with someone. The sides include a very bland slaw, chopped cabbage with no identifiable flavor. They also offer a salad which was crisp and came with a generous shot of dressing. The onion rings were frozen and the fries were fair to OK. What was truly unique is what is generally called Brunswick Stew and what the Dobbs folks call "Camp Stew." It's an almost gel, dark brown with tiny bits of corn and while it looks like a thick brown applesauce, it was pretty good. We asked our waitress about it, and her reply was classic: "I'm not sure , it depends who's in the kitchen when they make it." Reassuring. The service at the century old institution is better than the food. One tenured gent wanders about asking How y'all doing?" And the waitresses scurry about with big smiles and frequent check-ins on drinks. Delightful true daughters of thee South. Overall, the Brown Shoe Gourmet rates Dobbs two stars. High expectations.
