As someone who has been reviewing for Yelp for a long time, this has to be the absolute worst dining experience I've ever had. I mean that very seriously. On Saturday, 2/28, I came into the restaurant at 6:15pm with a group of 6. Looking around the restaurant, there were only 3 tables taken. The Hostess wanted to put us a table, but it wouldn't fit us all. We asked her where to sit and she told us to decide on seating. We had to suggest to put a table together and started to move it ourselves, then she helped. Just odd because we had no idea if they had a table to seat us. While waiting for the server, the table in front of us asked for to-go boxes and was told they only have the bottoms, no lids. She brought plastic wrap to cover their leftovers. They were not happy and left without a lot of their leftovers. Our service came out and was very sweet. She honestly was the nicest person at that restaurant and she deserves to go somewhere that she can make better money. She told us they only had beer and wine, but only a few on the wine list. Sometimes if it was asked for, they said they didn't have it. I stuck to a Coke. We ordered as follows: Me: Loaded Baked Potato (yes that's it.) Person 2: wedge salad Person 3: cornbread skillet Person 4 and 5 had burgers. One had cheddar cheese with everything on it. The other had everything BUT pickles. We waited about an hour for our food. Person 5's burger came out and the fries were cold. I'm not meaning lukewarm, I mean COLD. Like out a fridge. They hadn't even been cooked all the way. Person 4's burger came out without cheese. Both of those were sent back to get that fixed. Person 4's burger came back with a piece of half melted (what looked like) American cheese on the bottom of the burger and the burger was BURNT. I mean, hockey puck burnt. When the fries were sent back, we could hear the cook SCREAMING AND THROWING THINGS, yelling that we "weren't right" and he "had just took those up". The server even felt them and agreed with us. My baked potato came out hard. I couldn't really even eat it. It was hard, bland and it was covered in sour cream, even the outside. A runner came over to bring some salt and pepper and I asked her if she wouldn't mind letting us talk to a manager. Everyone there said I was polite in asking, as we just wanted to tell her what was going on, not trying to get anything free. When I asked, she threw her hands up in the air, slapped her hips, rolled her eyes and stomped away. The people around us even looked at her. They also could hear the cook yelling. We did see another couple send their food back as well while we were waiting. The manager comes over and when we tell her everything, she tells us she agrees and that she's working on getting better help, as we could see what she was working with there. We just asked her for the check and asked to go. We hear the manager try to talk to the team and the cook begins to scream and talk down to her. Then, he came out and stared at our table. If looks could kill, we would all be dead. The thing is- burgers there are $18. We didn't get anything hard to make but only the salad and the cornbread were fit to eat. They did comp our meal, but we continued to ask them to let us pay. Instead, we ended up giving the money to the server. She can only do what she can and she was so sweet. I do have multiple people who will attest to everything that happened. That was the whole experience. We walked outside and immediately went to get something else to eat. We came to the American because this was our first time in town and we had heard great things about it! Of course, we had seen it on TV as well, so we were very excited. The next night, another couple we knew went there and had the same experience. She was the only table in there and they still took over an hour and her food was terrible. This is absolutely so disappointing. The American used to be THE destination down here but now, it's the one everyone is telling people NOT to go to. We talked to our hotel host and they said they wished we would have asked because they would have told us to stay away. It's a shame. I really hope they can get some new people in there who care about food and making it good! I'd love to come back if they're able to improve and change my review. I do have 5 other people who are willing to attest to this, so as much as I wish it was an exaggeration, it's not. read more

THis restaurant is leading the restoration of downtown Bainbrige. We had a very pleasant dinner here with a dozen of my wife's family members. The space was beautiful and open. Good drink selections with both local and more faraway craft options for beer. Elevated Southern/Georgia fare on the menu. For appetizers, try the cornbread and heirloom tomato pie. You can get quality fried chicken, pork chop, and grits here. I had the Pecan Crusted Idaho Trout. The sauce was bit cloying but the fish was tasty. Service was quick and competent, especially with a large group. Definitely one of the best dining options in downtown, and right next door to the brewery. read more

New ownership! Beware!!! Service was practically nonexistent. We waited an hour for a wedge salad, pork sirloin and a baked potato. The chicken for the wedge salad was burnt and inedible. Took my son to lunch. We were greeted by a hostess with a frown. Limited menu for lunch. Ordered the pimento cheese which was very ordinary. The tomato pie was nothing more than gloppy cheese in a greasy pie crust with "2" tomato slices on top. My son ordered a pricey steak that looked good, cooked nicely but had the flavor of old meat. Definitely did not live up to the hype. The upside was the attentive and pleasant waitress and the iced tea. Would I make the drive from Tallahassee to Bainbridge just to eat at The American again? The American was recommended to us by everyone when arriving in town. Another prime location, located right on the square downtown. The hostess stand seemed slow and unorganized but we eventually had a table. The place wasn't too busy when we arrived at 6pm but it took the 3 hostesses about 5-10min looking at their seating chart to make a decision. By the time we left around 8pm, there was a line out the door. Our server, Dustin, was fantastic. His knowledge of the menu and southern hospitality truly showed. He made a ton of recommendations before we made a decision. We started with a bottle of wine before we both ordered the Hawaiian Ribeye. They let the meat marinate in pineapple, garlic, and ginger for 48 hours before cooking and it truly showed. The flavor was sweet but not overpowering and we both loved it. I had a side of brussel sprouts and mashed potatoes and both of those were good but nothing special. I'm not sure if I'm a fan of the brussel sprouts being chopped up. Overall, a cool historic building revitalized as an inviting restaurant. There isn't a bar to sit at but they had a drink list. The wine list is nothing special as the only cab options were crazy expensive or on their limited list that weren't anything out of the ordinary. We've eaten here twice. This place is an oasis in the middle of nowhere for the serious foodie. The interior brick is really cool as are the chandeliers and wood trim. The tables are set very nice with candlelight and most importantly the food is out of this world, both lunch AND dinner. The food is really good!! We've had the burgers, the pasta as well as the cornbread, goat salad, and charcuterie board. The goat cheese on the goat salad is fried. Don't miss it. We have loved everything we've ordered and the service is always good too. This is not just a local favorite, people from Florida drive up here as well. Olevia and Bailee were terrific hosts. This is one of the coolest places in a small town I've ever been to. It's very clear to me, someone cares about what happens here. Thank you "The American" for being AWESOME. If you're looking for a meal that will make your taste buds do a happy dance, look no further. We just had an unforgettable experience and let's just say, this meal left us speechless (in the best way possible). The tomato pie--oh my word. This was not your average slice. Imagine a buttery, crispy crust holding together the juiciest, most flavorful tomatoes, all topped with a delicate cheese blend that was simply out of this world. Next up was the showstopper: the jalapeno butter ribeye. First of all, they torch the butter right at your table, filling the air with the intoxicating aroma of sizzling jalapenos. It was like a smoky, spicy love letter to our senses. The ribeye itself? Perfectly cooked, ridiculously tender, and packed with flavor that made each bite better than the last. If you like a bit of heat, this one is a must. The crab cakes were a dream. These weren't those sad, filler-heavy patties you sometimes get--no, these were pure crab, all meat, no fluff. They had just the right amount of seasoning and were golden on the outside, tender and succulent inside. they were some of the best crab cakes I've ever had. And then... the banana cream pie. We're still thinking about it. The custard was impossibly creamy, with the perfect balance of sweet and rich. The the buttery wafer crust was the ideal foundation for this masterpiece. Every bite was a glorious reminder of how dessert should taste. I wish I remembered our waitresses name because she was so delightful. She stated she had worked there 6 years and we could tell she enjoyed her job and the customers she served. As we left a gentlemen offered to open the door for us and it turned out to be the owner. We had a nice conversation with him about his restaraunt and his car parked out front. Just good people all the way around. If you're in the area, do yourself a favor and get to this place ASAP. We visited The American on a Friday evening (we had reservations). This resturant is in downtown Bainbridge, GA. It has all the southern charm you would expect with large oak trees and Spanish moss. The restaurant is on the "square". The menu changes (mainly the main courses) based on what the chef can find in the area fresh. We had the scallops and filet steaks, and wedge salads. All were excellent, and you can tell the ingredients are fresh. The owners are doing this right! If you are in the area, give them a try. You will have a great meal, and be immersed in Southwest Georgia Deep South southern charm. read more

My Aunt and I (really her idea) decided to dine here for lunch yesterday while in town for our family reunion. Our waitress, Abigail was so delightful and very attentive to all of our needs. We both ordered the Grateful Goat Salads one with grilled chicken and one with grilled shrimp. This has to be one of the BEST salads that I have ever had!!! I have always had a great experience at The American until tonight. We came with a larger party to celebrate my Moms birthday. The restaurant was not very busy, so we assumed service would be good per usual. Unfortunately, another server accidentally dropped a plate of ketchup which then splatterd all over our clothing, bags, chairs, and the floor surrounding our table. The employees acted like it was an inconvenience for them to clean it up. Any other restaurant would have been apologetic and offered some sort of compensation or atleast a sense of urgency to make their guests feel comfortable. After the spill the employees were dismissive and slow to continue to serve us. We had to ask multiple times to have the ketchup cleaned off of the floor and to be offered more napkins for the table. I enjoyed the food but the experience was awful. Hundreds of dollars of clothing were stained. Not to mention the hundreds of dollars spent at the restaurant tonight with a hefty added gratuity. I understand that accidents happen, but I am disappointed in the service by the employees and their attitudes towards us. read more

This is a wonderful spot in the downtown Bainbridge square. Plenty of scenery and absolutely delicious food! Their menu is quaint, which is always a good sign. On my first visit in I got the crab crake. Y'all, this was one of the best crab cakes I've had in my LIFE! In Bainbridge Georgia!!! So let me start this by saying Bainbridge, GA is a very cute/quaint little town that we decided to stay in on our way to Florida because my other half's last name is....you guessed it, Bainbridge! So we asked for a good dinner recommendation and came to the American for dinner. Had to make a reservation but it was no big deal, 30 min wait...WELL worth it! The food was AMAZING!!! The pic doesn't do it justice, we had their cornbread appetizer which was fantastic, fluffy and wonderful with honey! Then we also had to try the heirloom tomato appetizer...WOW! So for dinner, we had the Tuna two way (Ahi!), the Hawaiian Ribeye, and the special beet ravioli and lobster in cream sauce....there are no words, but I will try....all three were out of this world!!!
