My favorite was cilegia and birra (cherries and beer). Located on an amazing small piazza in the heart of Rione Monte, one of the most interesting districts with great local businesses. Short striking distance, but mentally a world away, from the craziness and heat at the Coliseum and the Forum. Small fountain in the piazza is great for fresh, cold water, and even some splashing for small children. A great stop on your late afternoon/early evening passeggiata or after dinner stroll through Rome. It is custom to ask to taste flavors before ordering: Posso assaggiare = can I have a taste. Con panna=with cream. Due gusti=two flavors, Coppa=cup, Cono=cone. Don't forget grazie=thank you. Learning Italian fruit flavors is a great way to teach kids a little Italian. They have lots of flavors, some of which aren't often found. I chose two flavors: basil and pineapple with ginger. I really like that they write the main ingredients and have labels for intolerance for each flavor: gluten-free, egg-free, milk-free, nut-free and sugar-free. The tastes are very good. I was about to have another gelato to try different flavors until... I saw that when serving another customer, they used the same scoop for two flavors which were next to each other. I did not notice that when they served my gelato because my two flavors were quite far from each other so they use different scoops. I prefer having a dedicated scoop for each flavor so that the flavors do not potentially mix into each other (even slightly). That is why I give them 4 stars. It is a very small gelateria. However, the outside is a small piazza with some benches and a drinking fountain. The piazza is located in a quiet area. All the people sitting there came for the gelato. Nice atmosphere. read more

I tried, their guinia( I think that's how you spell it), it tastes like chocolate and hazelnut, sorta like nutella, but better; the wasabi chocolate and the peach mixed with port wine and raspberry(?). Sorry wasn't really paying much attention to the exact ingredients, the amount of ice cream offered a kind of distracted me. So... In the end, we decided on getting.... None of what we tried... Loooool, I'm sure the gelaterian was like wth... But the flavors we tried just weren't all that too my liking, the wasabi chocolate was really weird, it was literally it's name, a first punch of wasabi then the chocolate flavors slowly crept up. So anyhow, not going to go into why I didn't choose those flavors.... I ended up getting the white almond and dark chocolate. Omg, I was so glad I ditched those previous flavors. These weren't that sweet, and there were little shreds of almond in the white almond ice cream, not to mention these were the none American almonds, which tastes better in dessert. The sweetness from the almonds mixed with the bitterness of the dark chocolate was amazing! The dark chocolate was real dark, and really good. Ugh this was literally just such a disappointment. The first thing that my friend and I wanted to do when we landed in Rome was eat gelato. We arrived in Piazza Venetia and immediately Yelped for a place to eat. Even though this one was .5 miles away, we decided to take the journey. It's a struggle to find because if you go to the exact address on Yelp.. it's not the right place. And it's not that the address is wrong because even Fatamorgana says that that's its address. You need to walk about 2 more minutes down the street to a small square area where the road splits off. Unfortunately for us, the place wasn't open until 1pm so we opted to go again given how good the reviews are. So let me make my disclaimer. This place serves good ice cream. But not gelato. Gelato is differentiated by its creamy texture. One easy way you can tell if ice cream is gelato is the way that it's being scooped. Ice cream tends to be scooped in circular balls whereas if you go to good gelaterias, you'll notice that the gelato is packed in and out with a flat utensil to make the gelato slightly more compact while retaining its creamy flavor. That was the first sign. I got the banana cream with seasame, tiramisu, and the estasi (chocolate, coffee, and hazelnut.) The flavors were great and there certainly were quite a number of flavors, but this isn't gelato. This is where I was disappointed and have my problem--if Fatamorgana didn't advertise itself as gelato and simply said they had good ice cream, I'd rate the place higher. But instead, it's calling its product gelato, tourists who don't really know gelato come and rate this place and believe that this is authentic gelato. No.. this is not gelato at all. It's just good ice cream. Please don't waste your time going out of the way for this if you're looking for gelato. Also, having gone to so many gelato places after this, this place is actually quite expensive given how small the scoops are. Each scoop is one euro but easily devourable in seconds. tldr; good ICE CREAM. not gelato. go elsewhere. if you just want yummy flavors, you're fine, but don't go here if you came to Italy for gelato. read more

The tastiest, most unique and fun gelato flavors in all of Rome. I can't say enough about how much I enjoy going to Fatamorgana every time I'm lucky enough to visit the Monti area. I'm always pleasantly surprised by the brash flavors and always leave wanting more. If I had one negative to add, it would be to avoid getting a frappe, very little gelato was included and as a result, almost no flavor other than frothy milk.
