Organic. Simple and sweet. In Trastevere. 12.2.24
    Will S.

Rome, Italy. First you notice the dark veneer and simple layout to this shop. Otaleg is a small one counter gelateria in the Trastevere hood. It's a small-batch, organic, business; what's there not to love!!! Our server was super helpful and informed us of the fresh options for the day. And he was on point. The flavors were authentic tasting and definitely tasted like a super good gelato not an ice cream. So we picked two recommendations for the day and I have to say I've not had gelato made this well that is unforgettably delicious. I loved it so, I came back 3 times. There are many other flavors on the menu. There are two locations in the city. This one has a 'lab' down the street and is sometimes open to visitors. Love Otaleg and hope to return next time I'm in the city. End of Yelp.

A Bobby and Giada fav! Artisanal small batch high quality ingredients definitely make Otaleg a must visit. A weekday during my trip was easy, no line and friendly staff provide samples to try. It's a little off the beaten path and it's a very small shop but they definitely exceed with providing excellent unique flavors. Supposedly they are always experimenting with new flavors that change frequently so definitely sample before you make your final selection. Definitely worth the trek. I also didn't know celebrity chefs Bobby Flay and Giada De Laurentiis were fans of Otaleg until after I returned home. I saw a video of Bobby saying he ate gelato from here daily which I suppose should add a little more evidence of Otaleg's greatness. LOL. Fun fact: Otaleg is gelato spelled backwards.

Had the stracciatella and hazelnut ice cream. It was very creamy and delicious. Staff was very nice and allowed you to try the flavors you wanted.

Delicious innovative gelato. Natural fruits , ingredients like coconut, cocoa nibs, tea flavorings, and choice % darkness of chocolate offered including 100%. All ingredients densely found in the gelato which is a very healthy practice. Yum! We highly recommend ! Delicious

Very good gelato. The service staff is friendly and the place is clean. It's pretty small inside.

If you're on the search for some incredible gelato in Rome, look no further than Otaleg in the Trastevere neighborhood. Although it's outside of the city center, it's worth the short walk or public transport ride. The gelato is creamy, full of flavor, and not too sweet (prolly the best compliment). There always seems to be a line, but the staff are quick with orders and are friendly as well! Definitely worth a stop if you're in Rome.

I found amazing, unique flavors and awesome tasting gelato at this shop. They make rich, artisnal gelato with fresh, natural ingredients. This cute little shop located in the old town area of Trastevere is a wonderful place to eat delicious, flavorful gelato. It's a small shop and gets busy quickly. They have quite a good and interesting variety of flavors to choose from. There's something for everyone here, in my opinion. You are allowed to sample two flavors per person. I tried their White Chocolate Olive Oil w/ Orange Zest; Ice Cream with dried fruits, sesame seeds & nuts; Turkish Pistachio, and Cheesecake with red fruit and biscuit flavors. They were all great. The flavors were pronounced and popping in my mouth. My favorites were the Cheesecake and the White Chocolate ones. We had a good experience. The only negatives I would say were the scoop sizes, which were a bit too small, and the limit on the gelato samples you could try. But otherwise, this shop was well worth the visit, and I would go back here in a heartbeat. I loved it. I miss it. If you visit Rome, then make a point to go to the Trastevere area and check out this fine establishment.

We had gelato after dinner and decided to share because we just had dinner. We went back for a second time. 5 minutes later. Lesson learned - even if you get three scoops to share, it's not enough! 1st try: we played it safe. Chocolate, pistachio, coffee. Decadent, creamy, wonderful! 2nd try: we were experts now! Lol. We got the pecorino with cherry jam and the honey milk cream. Oh my! It's like cheese and jam on a cracker, but gelato style. The gelato specialists were surprised we liked the pecorino. If you're in the area, give this place a try. The flavors are wonderful. Get your own and don't share! Take a risk, try the odd flavor you won't get at home! Enjoy!

Otaleg was really good. I would definitely stop here. I do think, however, that there is a lot of good gelato in Rome, and Otaleg was just one of many good ones. It has obviously benefited from Bobby Flay's featuring of it on his show, and that's the reason we (and many, many other people) stopped in. You can see the line was way out the door. Lots of drunk customers. So much so that the staff thanked some in my party for being courteous. I had pistachio and also a salted peanut and chocolate. Like I said, really good. Others in my group had reactions ranging from good, to the best ever. So, maybe you'll think so, too.

The absolute best gelato we ate in Italy! The flavors are natural and fresh and so unique. I don't think I saw more unique flavors in the time we spent in Italy. Everything was amazing, highly recommend

Expecting it to be there one year, I walked over to Piazza Navona and Gelateria Navona had evidently closed. I would then get gelato here and there. I then learned that Giolitti is a long standing gelateria and it's also in the historic center. I filed the name away in my head. Then, one day, I happened to walk right in front of it without even looking for it, so I went in. Giolitti is popular and it can be crowded. I'm going to say that I waited about 10 to 15 minutes. You pay at a counter first, deciding on what you want and how much of it, such as scoops and whether it will be in a cup or a cone. Once up at the counter, they don't rush you, which surprised me. I don't take that much time since I don't experiment much, but I still appreciate the courtesy. The price is roughly what everyone else in the historic center is charging. I always opt for the gelato it in a cup so you can "control" the dripping. The gelato - a mix of dark chocolate and two citrus flavors - was "molto buono." That said, just because it's so popular, I'm not going to downgrade Giolitti for it and complain about the crowds. You downgrade gourmet donut places in the U.S. where their fame has gone to their heads. There is also a spacious salon with nicer decor in which you can eat inside. At this point, Giolitti is really the only gelateria in Rome whose name I remember. I would gladly go back and I recommend it.

The did have some interesting flavor combos lined up for us to try, but I went with the flavors I craved. Everything was tasty and creamy, and the serving sizes were generous. They offered whipped cream on top of each portion as well, which we passed on, the gelato was yummy and creamy enough without the added cream. The shop is tiny (explains the line) but clean, and they do a good job of labeling each of the vats of gelato they have on display. Definitely a winner, and seemed to be quite popular with locals.
