Nice quaint gelato place. Really great to pickup and walk around the neighborhood. The pear was really interesting and loved the pistachio.

We read some articles before our Rome trip about how to tell what is a legit gelato spot. This place had the required traits. Covered gelato bins: check. Non-neon colored gelato: check. The flavors we tried were chocolate, pistachio, vanilla, and salted caramel peanut. In the nut flavors, you could taste and feel the actual chunks of those nuts. In the vanilla, the vanilla beans. All of the flavors were so natural both in their tastes and textures. I don't even like sweets and found these to be amazing. The service here, too, was friendly, and the ambiance was welcoming.

One of the best gelato places in Rome! Amidst the hundreds of fake gelato stores occupying space in Rome, it was wonderful to find this gem of a place based on a local's suggestion. We got a chocolate-based flavor, hazelnut, and stracciatella, where were all delicious! The gelato was rich, milkier, dense without adverse aftertastes, flavorful, and better than what I was hoping we would get during our trip to Rome. We also tried the cannoli which was absolutely wonderful! It was filled to order, even late at night, so the shell was crispy, the filling was delicious and creamy, and we got to choose a crunchy nut coating.

Excellent gelato in trastevere area. Very sleek shop with such nice service. About 3 Euro for a small cup with the option for two flavors. Perfect little portion for me! I opted for the pistachio and cannoli both great consistency and taste. Not too sweet but beautifully dense and pungent.

Fior di Luna is undoubtedly a popular gelato spot, evident from the line of people eagerly waiting. Despite the crowd, we thoroughly enjoyed our gelato to-go and took a leisurely stroll around the area.

Just literally one of the best gelatos that we tried during our trip to Italy this summer. We tried a lot of gelatos, but this place topped it. This feels natural and organic, you could find bits and pieces of the pistachio and hazelnut (my two favorite flavors!). If you are in Trastavere, stop by here for a little gelato snack.

Good gelato spot in the middle of Trastavere, Rome! It's one of the cheapest spots I experienced. It was only 2.50 euros for a small cone, and you get two flavors. They let me pay with a credit card. The servers spoke English. They had a line, but it went by quickly. I got tiramisu and gianduia.

Mango, strawberry, and vanilla. Freaking awesome!!

Best gelato in Roma. In a quite area. No seats but plenty of space outside. We had seconds.

We just finished lunch and I was hankering for something sweet. This place was empty and had a good rating on yelp so I went on in and ordered a small cone. The employee was very polite and helpful! But the gelato was subpar and not really memorable.

Not much to say that hasnt already been said: Just a great gelato spot in Trastevere. The pistachio and hazelnut are hands down the way to go. Good prices for the location, good service, and never much of a wait. For certain one of the better gelato places in Rome, great spot!

This was one of our favorite gelatos that we had in Rome - they have two locations, and this one is located in Trastevere. We got a small ice cream of two flavors: pistachio and hazelnut. I would highly recommend both these flavors. They don't have that big of a selection of flavors, maybe 15-20. Both the hazelnut and gelato flavors we had were great, and didn't taste artificial. The pistachio was probably the best pistachio that we had in Italy (and I ate gelato every day for 10 days, sometimes 2 in one day). The pistachio wasn't some artificial green color, and it actually tasted like roasted pistachios. They did have whipped cream on top of the ice cream but it didn't taste particularly fresh to me - it was a bit sour and probably wasn't sweetened. I didn't like the whipped cream at all and would pass on it next time. Overall, really great pistachio gelato and I'd come back here again for this flavor. Worth a visit if you're in the area; it was one of our favorite gelato places in Rome.

Stracciatella was kinda plain. Pistachio was better.
    Diana N.

My ranking: 1) Fred (custard with cookies)- sweet and tasty! 2) Gianduia (hazelnut chocolate)- chocolate icecream with some hazelnuts like a Ferrero rocher. 3) Pistachio- more subtle flavor 4) Stracciatella (chocolate chip)- kinda plain except the chocolate bits. They didn't have duetto today. 2.5€ for 2 scoops on a cone. Cash only.

Mild was stracciatella which is available in every gelateria in Italy. The version here is perfectly fine ... But it doesn't take much to make a good stracciatella. The exploding taste buds flavor was mango with chocolate bits. * * * You can finish this review yourself. You know where I am going. * * * I am going back to Otaleg as many times as is humanly possible. ********************************* Footnote. There are some surprisingly whiny reviews from American Yelpers about this place. They complain because very good Italian gelato does not have the creamy texture of American artisanal ice cream. In Boston or Philadelphia, creaminess is fundamental. No rich texture and you have failed. Italian gelato is a pure taste proposition. Creamy or not creamy doesn't matter so long as your mouth explodes when you eat the stuff. Don't be an Ugly American and insist that Italian ice cream be just like the Haagen Dazs you get at home.

The gelato was good too, though I had better during my brief trip to Rome, and also at a few gelato shops back home. I believe Otaleg is quite popular, but it was empty when we went on a chilly Monday afternoon in November. Service was fast and polite, and we took our gelato to the little piazza nearby, the Piazza di San Calisto. I got three scoops in a cup: hazelnut, pistachio, and the gelato of the day, ricotta cheese with almonds and grapes' reduction. The flavors were good. A nice hazelnut and I liked the slightly salty pistachio--there was another pistachio flavor, too, which was supposed to be sweeter. I didn't totally get the grape in the ricotta cheese flavor, but it was mild and pleasant. My husband got the coffee, which was excellent. I'm willing to allow that I may be used to a different style of gelato, but I wasn't totally sold on Otaleg's texture. It wasn't as lush and creamy as I like, and the ricotta flavor was borderline icy. That said, I inhaled my cup in about five minutes. I wouldn't go out of my way to check out Otaleg, but it's a solid place for a sweet treat while walking around Trastevere.

No signs, no crowd, just a tiny counter and a couple of flavors that look like they were made by someone's Italian grandma who's been perfecting the recipe since the Roman Empire fell. I went rogue with caramel and pistachio, and let me tell you, this was gelato that whispered, not screamed. Originally a carpenter and ski instructor, Rohregger followed his partner to Rome to establish his eponymous gelateria. While the most adventurous flavors have gradually been toned down, Gunther still promises the freshest seasonal ingredients in every scoop. I visited the shop just across the Tiber from Trastevere. Bright lights and electronic dance music poured from the storefront into the evening alleyway. The interior feels clean and modern. The whitewashed walls are decorated with Gunther-specific branding. The gelato display cuts diagonally through the room. A large mirror and minimal barstool seating are pressed into the corner. Generally, the flavors were sophisticated but traditional (although the fragrant Mugo Pine was an ambitious option), and the gelato was extra creamy but not overly sweet. The Morogoro Extra Chocolate was the gelato incarnation of the darkest chocolate imaginable, while the Ricotta Stregata was a masterclass in creamy simplicity. The Cafe Espresso leaned heavily into the espresso with crunchy espresso beans mixed in, while the deeply flavorful Pistachio was in need of chopped bits. The complementary waffle chip and wafer straw were a nice bit of texture, if not forgettable. Service was friendly; servers scooped countless samples without batting an eye. A 4-scoop Grander will set you back $7 for a total volume slightly larger than the size of your fist. Expecting it to be there one year, I walked over to Piazza Navona and Gelateria Navona had evidently closed. I would then get gelato here and there. I then learned that Giolitti is a long standing gelateria and it's also in the historic center. I filed the name away in my head. Then, one day, I happened to walk right in front of it without even looking for it, so I went in. Giolitti is popular and it can be crowded. I'm going to say that I waited about 10 to 15 minutes. You pay at a counter first, deciding on what you want and how much of it, such as scoops and whether it will be in a cup or a cone. Once up at the counter, they don't rush you, which surprised me. I don't take that much time since I don't experiment much, but I still appreciate the courtesy. The price is roughly what everyone else in the historic center is charging. I always opt for the gelato it in a cup so you can "control" the dripping. The gelato - a mix of dark chocolate and two citrus flavors - was "molto buono." That said, just because it's so popular, I'm not going to downgrade Giolitti for it and complain about the crowds. You downgrade gourmet donut places in the U.S. where their fame has gone to their heads. There is also a spacious salon with nicer decor in which you can eat inside. At this point, Giolitti is really the only gelateria in Rome whose name I remember. I would gladly go back and I recommend it.
