This was my first gelato experience in Rome, and it was wonderful! It's on the way/between the Vatican museum entrance and St Peter's Square. There are four sizes, but you can get up to three flavors for any cone size! The smallest is only €2, and the largest cone, which is a waffle cone, is €6. Of the flavors I tried, here is what I liked from most to least: triple (lime, passion fruit, vanilla), mango, pistachio, strawberry, yogurt, and coffee. Don't get me wrong - all the flavors taste so natural and they use organic milk. For example, I felt like I was actually eating pistachio nuts, and the coffee wasn't sweet at all like it is in the States. There are several other flavors too, like Nutella, chocolate, hazelnut, cream, banana, etc. The flavors are listed on either side of the entrance/door. The guy that helped me spoke English as well. It's about the size of a small room; the gelato fridge is right in front of you when you enter. I would definitely make a stop back here to get gelato another time! Godere! read more

Old Bridge is a gelato place. I've been to Old Bridge twice. It's located very close to the Vatican like outside of the Vatican walls across the street. They have over 2,500 reviews with a 4.5 star average rating on TripAdvisor. Most of the cups come with three flavors that you can choose from. For the biggest cup, you can chose four flavors. There's also cones but I didn't want to take the risk of the scoops falling off the cones. I saw that happen with others as they were walking out. For the first visit, I ordered a medium cup with Nutella, Crema, and Chocolate gelato. For the second visit, I ordered a small cup with the same flavors. I got the small on the second visit since we just had a large dinner prior to visiting. The scoops were large. All the flavors were smooth, thick, creamy, and very rich. The nutella was rich in hazelnut cocoa flavor, the crema tasted similar to vanilla but creamier, and the chocolate was rich in chocolate flavor. The service was okay. Yes, they did their job but for a moment there when we couldn't really decide what we wanted it looked like they were gossiping in Italian. The second time we went the service was better. Once they're done scooping up the flavors, they do this thing where they kind of spin the cup and flick it to you on the counter. There's no seating area so it's a grab and go place. Every other time we drove by during the day, we'd see a huge line. When we went later in the evening, there's not much of a line. Great gelato but don't expect too much about the service. 5 stars for the gelato but 3 for the service. Anyway, will most likely be back here for gelato the next time I'm in Rome. read more

This gelato spot is definitely worth the visit. Located near the Vatican/Sistine Chapel, this is an excellent spot to visit following your tours. One would never expect that such a small gelato shop (easily the smallest place I have ever seen) would have such a line of people wanting to try their gelato. No tables or seats, the only way you can get your gelato is to walk up to order to go. All the flavors here are AMAZING. Depending on whatever you are in the mood for, I would recommend trying a little bit of everything. I wish the store was bigger, but at the same time I think this is what makes it so popular. When my wife and daughters found something via Yelp, my default response was, "Let me check if my friends have reviewed that." I'm way behind in the review department but I'll make it a point to diligently complete my drafts from now on. Whether it would help my friends (or someone else) remains to be seen, but I have to start somewhere to give something back... A couple of hours removed from trying Lemongrass Gelato, here we were again at another gelateria before we made it to the Vatican Museums. It was not our intent to do a gelato crawl; it's just that there was this itch that needed some scratching. Old Bridge Gelateria lies just outside the Vatican walls along Via dei Bastoni di Michelangelo. It is a very small spot but it was very easy to locate because the line outside made it impossible to miss. It reminded me of Ici, one of our favorite ice cream places in Berkeley and of Bi-Rite Creamery and Humphry Slocombe - San Francisco's finest. When in Rome, you're supposed to do as the Romans do. And we complied! Not only that, we did what probably every tourist did at that time - fall in line for some good gelato. Since we just had dinner and dessert prior to this, I was the only one who saved enough room to squeeze in some more. For 2€, you could get 2 flavors served on a cone. The first flavor that I chose was Bacio which had a caption of "chocolate and hazelnut" written underneath. Now quickly, what does that remind you of? That's right - Nutella!!! It is of Italian origin and, interestingly enough, they had this flavor placed right on top of Bacio, as if daring you to get both and compare. I decided to go with Bacio and it was what I thought it would be... Nutella on high gear - with real hazelnuts and drizzled with chocolate! For the love of burnt and salted caramel flavors, I had to go with the closest available - Caramel. It was rich and luscious, but it still made me miss that crème brûlée-like flavor from burnt caramel and that salty taste from its salted counterpart. The line may be long and the space may be cramped but this place has been around for 25+ years so they know what they are doing. I've seen it in different lists of the best gelato in Rome and that was reason enough for me to bookmark it in my offline map. I can't give it 5 stars because I did not get to try many flavors. But based on the smooth, velvety texture and creamy, delish taste, this place is totally legit. Molto bene! In case you're wondering where the photos are, they are out there on the business page. My favorite gelato place in Rome! And trust, I've been to quite a few gelato places here. The prices are prime and the gelato is SO WORTH IT! 2 euros will get you three flavors in a cup or a cone. There is even an option for 1 euro or more! Beware in the middle of summer, the gelato melts quite fast so the smart idea is to opt for the cup even though the cone might be more picture-optimal! There has always been a line when I've gone, so be prepared to wait in the hot sun with a fan blowing outside (doesn't really do much though). But this makes the gelato all worth it! Lemon, strawberry, pineapple, mango, and pistachio were all very good! Definitely recommend the lemon though, super refreshing on a hot day. Also there is no sitting room but you can walk a little bit to a sitting area away from the Vatican. read more

Good but not worth the 30 min wait. After hours of touring the Vatican and St. Peter's Basilica, we were in need of a cool treat. Took out my handy Yelp app and Old Bridge was nearby. Saw the super long line and decided to stand in it b/c well, if there's a long line it's got to be good right? It was good, but not really worth the 30 mins we waited in the heat. They have a nice variety of flavors and the prices are right. Employees are quick and friendly. There is no seating here. Enjoy your gelato to go. The gelato had a lovely consistency but I wouldn't say it's the best flavor wise. It was still quite tasty. If there isn't a huge line here, this place is definitely worth trying. One of the best gelato shops I've been to in Rome, and possibly even in Italy. We had been waiting about an hour and a half in the line to get into the Vatican. My sister commented that there was a gelato shop up ahead and we should wait until we got closer to grab some. There was a line when we got to the shop, but as we left, the line was even longer than before we got there. It's a pretty disorganized line (more like a mob of people, really). We got to the front and picked out flavors. Each small cone or cup is 2€, and came with three scoops. We got one cup and one cone with 6 different flavors: mango, strawberry, pear (these three in the cup), baccio (cookies), caffe and Nutella. The mango and pear gelatos were perfection. I can't even, I felt like I was seriously in fruity sorbet heaven. They are spot on. The cookies and coffee flavors were great, too, although I did prefer the sorbets. The Nutella was very popular, which may have been the reason why it was so drippy before we even started eating. Maybe a poor pick on our part, but what a great way to pass the time while waiting for our entry to the Vatican (which actually never happened, even 2 hours after our gelato). Take the plunge, buy the gelato while in line for the Vatican. Or just for fun, although I would avoid the area unless you're planning on standing in the 5 hour line (not even exaggerating, sadly). read more
