Beans might have been Texas style that I'm just not used to but I found them completely tasteless. Roll seemed like just a packaged roll from the grocery. Only bright spot was the packaged lemon cake which was pretty tasty but they didn't make it. I grew up on Fat Boys and it was great under the original ownership. Had its own flavor and style. Now it's changed hands and honestly there is no flavor. The brisket is bland, the beans are bland and my loaded potato had barely enough butter for toast and no cheese. When I asked for more, it seemed like the guy working was paying for it personally. Last, the famous Fat Boys sweet bbq sauce is not the same. Sadly I was disappointed but truly hope this new ownership gets the food back to the original style that West Texans know and love. I grew up on Fat Boys and every return trip to canyon we stop here. It had been a few years since trying it and numerous people told us not to go that it wasn't good at all, but it's a tradition. I will say it's definitely not what it used to be. It was way better in the 90s when the two men owned, but I still enjoyed it. I miss the sweet bbq sauce, but the sausage, chopped beef, potato salad and cherry cobbler were all good. I will say the customer service was horrible. The girl behind the counter acted as though she didn't want to be there and was extremely impatient when I couldn't make up my mind between the plate and sandwich (there were no other customers in the line so I wasn't holding anyone up). I also asked her to list the sides as they aren't posted on the menu and that was a major request! All in all, I'd eat it again, but wouldn't be upset if we couldn't stop in. This place is great in a mom-and-pop hole-in-the-wall sort of way. I make sure every time I'm back in town I stop by here for my usual two chopped beef sandwiches with an extra couples sides of that sweet barbecue sauce. Opened in 1988 Fat Boy's has a super small interior that hasn't changed much in the 20 years or so I've been going there and nor should it. It's not about the decor here it's about the fresh daily chopped meats smothered in a much sauce as possible and that's what you get. Beef is king here so don't even think about not ordering some and if you're really hungry get a combo plate. Service is always with a pleasant smile and you're guaranteed to see someone you know or make a new friend while you're there. Best BBQ in Canyon for sure, though that might not being saying much. This isn't the cleanest place in town. It's not enough to back you out of the door but it's certainly enough to give the place a derelict air. In addition to a good spring cleaning, the food could use some spiffing up as well. Beef is nearly flavorless, overcooked, and bland. Imperceptible touch of smoke and that may be accidental exposure. Could be boiled, pressure cooked, or roasted since there is no hint of bark, smoke ring, or anything else indicating barbeque. Sauce is overly sweet, candy-like with heavy, fake liquid smoke overtone. No attempt to add complexity or aromatics. If you like plain tomato candy with liquid smoke, this is your sauce. Virtually inedible potato salad, flavor mostly pickle juice or pickle powder. The yellow hue is probably food coloring since there is only the slightest hint of mustard flavor. The "potato" component is mashed potato mix. There may have been a distant relationship with a real potato at some point in its past but it's hard to determine now. Bland is putting it mildly. Cole slaw is mayonnaise variety; cabbage probably from a bagged mix. The mayo isn't overdone; still has good crunch. It's neither too sweet nor watery. Overall: It is, at least, edible. Beans are bland but properly cooked otherwise -- still in their skins with a nice toothy bite. Bread is a regular, store bought hamburger bun. Iced tea is fake (some kind of instant mix). Anyone who enjoys bland, flavorless, and fake: This is your spot. read more

Well, our last BBQ stop on our trip was at Fat Daddy's in Canyon, TX. It'll also be our last stop at Fat Daddy's. We bought take out to fix up at our campsite. We asked for sliced brisket, but they only serve chopped. Super fine. Not even pulled, it was suitable for an institution of toothless people. The potato salad was mashed potato salad, not even an identifiable piece of a potato in there. I'm not the worlds biggest fan of potato salad, but I like it enough to know when it's good, but this wasn't. We're not sure exactly how Fat Daddy got fat. The service staff were friendly, hence the one star. Thank goodness we have a couple of ice cream sandwiches packed in the trailer to make this evening not totally suck. read more
