My first time here, the Tootum Gas Station is CLEAN, I think this is a really good alternative for truck drivers if they are willing to forgoe taking a break at Petro or even Pilot. I wanted Protein today, was almost inching on parking my rig at the Big Texan again to get myself some steak, but I quickly opted for Mitch's BBQ Texas Style off the exit 75 in Amarillo Texas. Service is fast, lady and elder gentleman were super nice. Food overall no complaints, great brisket. Albeit a bit cold, but decent pork ribs, pretty good Johnsonville*ish polish sausage with cheddar jalapeno. I'd say for value this would beat any Dickeys BBQ located in California with a huge tray of food coming out under 28.00. Think I found my new spot to take a breather in Northern Panhandle Texas. I was just looking for a quick bite before hitting the road again, and the Yelp reviews didn't steer me wrong. I ordered the four-piece combo: two ribs, two chicken tenders, waffle fries, and a drink. Everything was served hot and fresh. The barbecue sauce was solid, nice flavor without being overpowering. The ribs were decent, and the chicken tenders were cooked perfectly, though the breading was way too spicy for me (I ended up peeling it off and still enjoyed the chicken inside). Waffle fries were crispy and satisfying, and the price felt fair for the portion. Nothing fancy--again, gas station--but definitely better than expected. Would I go out of my way for it? Staying at the RV park next door & this was an easy walk over. This is not a typical Truck stop/gas station restaurant. It is a Restaurant with a truck stop attached . You can see from the pics the amount of food was definitely worth the prices. Getting to watch the staff member make your plate was fun. He made sure your product was weighed to ensure you didn't get short changed on amounts. I saw someone complaining about dry meat, well we didn't see/experience that. Do they not know what BBQ sauce is? Wife's turkey was tender, juicy, & had enough to add to her salad today. Her macaroni & cheese with green peppers was delicious. Little too warm for her, so I was the lucky one. My pulled pork sandwich was great & had enough to bring home for a next day sandwich. I enjoyed the special chips. Plenty of seating for families. THEY HAD TEXAS SWEET TEA. Parking lot will accommodate any size motorhome of pull RV. The staff were friendly, quick, keeping seating area clean, great customer service. Unsuspecting little bbq place inside a truck stop. You walk in you can smell the bbq. You order at a counter and walk down the line. They have a condiment bar with bbq sauce, pickles and peppers. We were there less than hour before they closed so some of their options were limited. We ordered brisket nachos add queso cheese. The. Hops are kettle cooked chips and I know you don't think nachos when you hear kettle cooked chips but hear me out. They were soft yet still crunchy enough to hold up to the amount of topping they put on the nachos. Toppings we chose Beans Queso Shredded cheese Jalapenos Spicy bbq sauce Additional toppings they have that we didn't get were Sour cream Onions I think I may be missing a topping but can't remember for sure. They load the toppings on and it was definitely enough for 2 of us to share. The brisket wasn't dry and had a decent smoke taste. I also got the only sausage they have had left for the day which was polish. The skin on it was a bit tough and it was greasy so I don't think I will be ordering that again. Tucked into the main building at this stop on I-40 is Mitch's Texas Style Barbecue. Expectations are generally low when traveling long distances on I-40. The stops are usually supplemented with generic fast food fare. Not very satisfying. We were very pleasantly surprised by Mitch's in this case. The staff behind the counter were very friendly. We ordered the pulled pork sandwich, the green chile mac'n cheese, the coleslaw, and the potato salad. The pulled pork sandwich had a light fresh bun with a heaping amount of savory pulled pork. The sandwich was very tasty and satisfying. The potato salad was very creamy with chucks of perfectly cooked potato. Delightful! The coleslaw was crisp and tantalizing. The mac'n cheese with the accompany green chile was very cheesy and had a mild bite to it which was very nice. We enjoyed our first tastes of Mitch's Texas Style Barbecue and will be on the look out for it again when we travel on I-40 in the future! Yay! read more

Very cool concept to have a full service BBQ place inside a convenience store (with Tesla Super Chargers). My man ordered the sliced brisket plate and I ordered the 2 meat plate with two different types of sausage. Our sides were fried okra, coleslaw and mac and cheese. Lastly, I though an order of the banana pudding would be great. We choose poorly with everything. Boo. It's not often that we walk away from a meal unhappy, but ya know. It happens occasionally. Mitch's has some room for improvement and with some tweaks, can be much, much better. Here's a few we noticed: less cheese in the sausage (I know, who would have ever thought less cheese is better!). The okra was soggy, so maybe working out the timing so that the crispy coating isn't compromised. The brisket was good, but the sauce was too vinegary for me and just meh for my man. The banana pudding was maybe the most disappointing. I'm not sure that the pudding actually was, but it was unlike anything I've ever had - way too dense with only a hint of banana. The staff cut 1/4 of a banana into small pieces and added a few slices to the bottom and top sections of the container we ordered. He took a few 'nilla wafers and crumbled them up on top of the dense mass. It was odd. No beuno. We each took a few bites and left the rest. We could have chosen the Wendy's that was next door, in the same open space. As we were leaving, we both shared that Wendy's would have been a better choice. While traveling from central Colorado to central Texas, I stopped here for gas and decided to give Mitch's a try. Gal in drive-thru was the sweetest. I ordered a pulled pork sandwich and an order of mozzarella sticks. One of the best pulled pork sandwiches I've had west of the Mississippi. The mozzarella sticks were pipping hot and huge! This was my first time visiting Amarillo, and I had to stop at Toot n Totum after an eight-hour road trip left me starving. When I went inside, I noticed there was a restaurant, but didn't think much of it at first. As I headed over, I was greeted by Sam who was the chopper, who explained all the sides and food they offered, making my experience incredible 10/10. First off this is a review for Mitch's trailer which happens to be at the toot'n totum parking lot in canyon on 2590, the staff is very friendly offered good suggestions barbecue was good poppers is good food could have been a little warmer. Their freshly made thick cut potato chips are really good and what they call the stockpile which is chips buried under brisket, beans and cheese drizzled with barbecue sauce. I actually had mine with brisket and pulled pork both were excellent. good char & good flavor just not quite hot enough temperature wise. Full disclosure, I have not eaten here yet but as I am adding this location I figured it's worth it to you to know it's attached to the Toot 'n Totum on the west side of the building. They must be doing something right though because the line was to the door when I went through. Went to the location on Georgia and my wife and I weren't super hungry so we ordered the meat tray which is 2 meats, 1 side, chips & 1 drink for $16.95 & I wanted to add 1 sausage for $3.95. As the guy was preparing our food a woman that works there came up and asked the guy what we ordered and than she proceeded to say "wouldn't you rather get the 3 meat meal, because you get 1 more meat & additional side for the same price?" So I agreed and when we went to pay they didn't give us a drink & when I asked they said it does not come with one. Nice bait & switch. Lastly their food was just mediocre. I've been here twice on my route. The first time was in the day the second time was today and it was about 630 when i got here. The food was cold both times and the ribs were over cooked. The stuffed jalapeños wrapped in bacon was ok but the ribs blew me both times. Cold and over cooked. 2.99 for a rib isn't bad if you just want to taste something other than tacos. I don't know if it's the young kids who's cooking or somebody that don't know anything about grilling but that's not it. Most BBQ restaurants in Amarillo were closed on Tuesday, but we found this Mitch's on yelp and had a fabulous lunch, with enough left over for dinner too!
