We had the sardines (sardine skillet), bolinhos de baccalaureate (cod & potato croquettes), alcatra (pot roast), red & green shrimp pasta, baccalaureate a brass (cod & potato gratin), and pasteis de kata (custard tarts). All were delicious, but my favorite was both the cod appetizer and entree, and the Portuguese egg tart dessert. Love the cute decor. There's only 3 restaurant parking up front, but there is a parking lot right in the back, and many street parking around. One nice touch is they give you a "menu guide" that tells you what some of these Portuguese dishes mean. It was very helpful to figure out what you want to order. Portuguese bean soup and oxtail caldo verde are so delicious it's a must order. Ask for them to reserve your oxtail since it sells out fast. Drinks included the dragonfruit cocktail, martini, and a glass of vinho verde. Appetizers included two kinds of tinned sardines served with bread, seaweed and pickled onions. The sardines were fine, but it was the relishes that showed the chef's talents. Other starters included a bread basket and the cod croquettes. Our party consisted of two couples, so we ordered three entrees. The branzino, pot roast, and vinegar pork. They accidentally doubled an entree (didn't charge us), so there were leftovers to bring back home. We took a chance on the bay leaf ice cream and it was delicious. This restaurant is absolutely wonderful! You can feel the love that the owners have poured into it through all the details from decor to drinks to dishes. The space is beautifully decorated with a variety of familial relics and authentic Portuguese artisanal treasures which remind you that you are not at (yet another) trendy restaurant d'jour but rather at the finest quality "mom and pops" establishment. On our most recent visit, we made a reservation for 4 people a week in advance and were so glad we did. We were seated promptly upon our arrival at a spacious table facing the bar. We started the night with a round of ginjinhas, a sweet cherry liquor with an actual alcoholic cherry in it. So delicious! I could've easily ordered several more if my wife hadn't reminded me to pace myself. We ordered caipirinhas as well, which were exactly as I enjoy them- strong, tart, and sweet! The first time we came here we ordered the fisherman's stew a our "appetizer" which came with a full loaf of pão de leira. As delicious as the stew itself was (rich tomato broth with big chunks of tender seafood), it was the bread (pão de leira) that really stood out to me. So this time around, we got right down to business and ordered the bread basket, and we're so glad we did. Each type of bread was unique in both flavor and texture, yet all were fluffy and fresh- again, so delicious! I wish they had to go containers of that herbed butter because it was perfection. We also ordered the milho frito (polenta fritters) and the bolinhos de bacalhau (cod & potato croquettes) both of which were delightful! The bolinhos de bacalhau took me back to my Brazilian childhood when we would have these on special occasions. Nostalgia at its finest! For our entrees, I ordered the steak with fries (as did one of our friends). I had thought about ordering the bacalhau because I just know they're going to do it exactly right, but I was craving steak. And I'm so glad I did because it was cooked to absolute perfection! It was extremely flavorful and cooked exactly on point (I asked for medium rare). The fries were crispy and because the steak was served on top of the fries, a good portion of them were "seasoned with steak juice". Honestly one of the best steaks I've had. Our friend who is an extremely picky eater sat there silently gobbling up every last morsel on her plate! My wife ordered the pot roast which I just had to have a bite of as well. It was so tender and flavorful served with a generous portion of mashed potatoes and cabbage. Our other friend ordered the red & green shrimp pasta which she also raved about and finished every last bite of. For dessert we shared 3: Kailua Bay Iced Cream, Bolo de bolacha, and bolo de queijo. The bolo de queijo was extremely nostalgic (just like my aunty used to make) but with a massive upgrade - fresh berries and a cornflake brittle that was to die for! The bolo de bolacha was a rich yet not overly sweet tiramisu-like dessert. Really really good! But my surprise favorite of them all was the bay leaf ice cream. Who knew that bay leaf would be such a refreshing and satisfying ice cream flavor?! Next time, I think I'll selfishly order my own full serving of the ice cream because my wife ended up polishing most of it off. We also closed out the night a round of Amaro Montenegros - it's hard to describe their flavor, but they are a perfect night cap after an exquisite meal. Tried this new Kailua restaurant which specializes in Portuguese food. Because it was a crowded Friday evening we had to eat at the bar, which turned into a delightful dining experience where we were constantly entertained by bartender and restaurant partner Sheldon. He helped us decide what to eat and drink, everything was delicious! Wife and I split the fisherman stew, bread basket, cod fritters, but the tinned fish board and port wine were all mine. Sheldon even gave us a taste of homemade cherry liquor called ginjinha which was syrupy and delectable. We will go back because we want to try the desserts. Service is exceptional and the staff is so friendly and attentive. Everything I've ordered had been delicious. Each time I've ordered something different and enjoyed each of them. My favorites were the Granny Pereira's Piripiri Chicken and the Bitoque a Madeirense the steak and fries. Both were cooked and flavored perfectly. Most dishes seem to come with a steamed cabbage which was surprisingly tasty. The cod was good but not what I was expecting. People I've gone with have gotten the pot roast, burger, fisherman's stew and cod sandwich. Everyone really enjoyed what they got. The first time I went we ordered the appetizer sampler. It came with a variety of small things all which were tasty. The portion was definitely a good size. The variety of bread in the bread basket was also really good. It came with focaccia, sweet bread and one other. For dessert I had their version of tiramisu which was delicious. It was made with royal creams which are my favorite! My sister had the egg tarts which were fresh out of the oven and she loved them. Just like what she got in Portugal. Faria is a true gem among the restaurant industry, both here on Oahu/Hawaii and in general. For context, getting a reservation here can be challenging as things tend to fill up quickly and weeks in advance. It also doesn't help that they are open only Wednesday through Saturday and that walk-in options can be limited, but, boy, is it worth the wait. We ate here as a group of three and can honestly say that Faria served one of the best meals we've had in a very, very long time. It ranks among some of the best food I've ever eaten. For a place that prides itself on connections to Portuguese immigrants, I always found it weird to have never come across a self-styled Portuguese restaurant (not referring to "fusion" style places or similar) until Faria opened. Faria felt like a home away from home, with a rustic elegant dining setting and wonderful staff to boot, we truly felt welcome. We had the house bread and butter, salt and vinegar wings, and potato/kale/oxtail soup for appetizers. Everything was simply delicious. The oxtails were stewed just how I like them and fall-off-the-bone tender. The flavors were simply out of this world. The bread was also amazing, which is not something that I generally write or care about, but it was a nice way to start the night off. And the wings had a very uniquely delicious flavor that I had not really come across until trying here. With such an amazing start, we had our hopes up for the main courses, and Faria did not disappoint. Between us three, we ordered a whole Branzino roasted fish, the ribeye steak and fries, and the Vinha Dalhos braised pork. Everything was simply delicious and I'm glad we were in a group so were able to sample each other's food. Even for something as "simple" as ribeye steak and fries (and to be fair I've seen plenty of places mess up steak), the flavor profile was out of this world. The fries tasted like they were cooked in some kind of animal fat/tallow, which added to the wonderful flavor; granted, this could have been the result of the juices from the steak dripping onto the fries, but the point is that they were amazing. And the steak was seasoned and cooked to perfection. All of the other entrees were amazing as well. We definitely did not leave disappointed. For dessert, we ordered Portuguese custard tarts, which were the best we've ever had. I am so glad that we were able to eat at Faria. They told us windows already taken so sat us farther in next to a column even if we were the only 1 of 2 parties there. Completely empty. 3. They post on website they're "hospilitarians" - nothing hospitable- no "happy birthday". My wife told both the hostess & manager it was for my birthday. Still - no "happy birthday", no accommodations even when their website says to let them know if you're celebrating a special occasion and they'll do things to make it special! 4. Maybe because we look "too local" and not from the mainland that we didn't get serviced like the other reviews say. Nothing hospitable. Typical of a lot of places in Kailua these days. 5. After some person came and said there is limited seating....even if no one was even around....we opted to up and leave and go somewhere else. Won't be going back. This place was amazing! The food was 'ono, worth every penny paid. The only area that could improve as for the food, is in their portion sizes that could be larger. The service from our server was excellent. However the service at the host stand could be better. Although we arrived 15 minutes prior to our reservation, we were told that we could be seated early but that we won't receive service until our reservation time. Although it was a weird proposition, we accepted. Then we were told that the only table that was available was the coldest table in the restaurant, even though many of the tables were open. After being seated, we felt the cold, but they did provide blankets for my young children. However, a party was never seated next to us where the AC was not directly blowing at. That was a missed service opportunity. Regarding the ambiance, it is beautiful, cozy, and clean. We especially loved all of the Portuguese memorabilia that decorated the walls. We started with a round of cocktails then sampled the bread basket - Pao Caseiro - with 3 types of bread served with both a salted and spiced butter and the codfish fritters or Bolinhos de Bacalhau. We then moved on to Granny Pereira's Piripiri Chicken, the fisherman's stew or Caldeirada de Pescadora and the traditional braised pork or Vinho D'alhos. All three entrees were filling and delicious especially dipping the Pao de Lareira or Portuguese foccacia in the sauces. The girls sampled the Portuguese custard tarts or Pasteis de Nata and the Pistachio Rum Cake which actually had a pronounced pistachio flavor, not just a green color while I sampled the Ginjinha or sour cherry, cinnamon and clove infused aguardiente or Portuguese brandy. There's a beautiful bar and decoration and it's always lively but not overly loud. And what really sets them aside is the service. We most recently sat at the bar and Sheldon, the bartender, went above and beyond! We had an amazing time. We loved our cocktails, and the wine goes great with the food. All the Portuguese dishes are great, we especially love the apps! And don't sleep on the burger... it may just be the best on island! The restaurant provided my wife and I a glass of champagne as we were celebrating her retirement. I decided on the branzino and it was by far the best I have had. My wife had the fisherman's stew and she said it was delicious and would have it again. The pistachio rum cake was fabulous and there were many other deserts on the menu worth returning for. This was our first visit and we were very pleased and are eager to return with our friends. A beautiful restaurant that made you like home and part of the family. The guy at the front didn't seem to care that we were there but the bartender was super friendly and let us know that they weren't ignoring us. Beware the sassy waitress with the tattoos! She hates her job. She's that grumpy Podagee aunty that you don't want to piss off because she's going to let you know and then will hold a grudge against you forever.
