I always wanted to eat here for dinner but I found out they are open for lunch! This 'hidden' restaurant is in the same center as Cinnamon's and Manoa chocolate, on the street side (opposite side) of the center. Its just one door, so you have to kinda look for it. I went inside and there was just one employee. Lunch is just poke bowls, and you can either dine in or take out...and I chose to dine in. I ordered the bowl with green onion, ginger and shoyu sauce. It had 7oz of fresh ahi and sushi rice on it. It was really delicious and came with extra toppings like bubu arare. Made to order with fresh ingredients, it had nice flavors and great texture. There were a few bummers about my experience. Apparently, whether you dine in or take out, they serve you in a take out container. Kinda blows the experience when you are sitting in a nice restaurant at a sushi bar. Also, my poke bowl was $20.00. Probably one of the coolest hidden gems I've found in Kailua town so far. It's definitely a challenge to find it, but once you do, you won't be sorry. Ample free parking space since it's located in a commercial area. Easy to find despite the subtle restaurant front. There's only about 8-12 seats per reservation time. We got lucky for our anniversary on Halloween night because we were their only guests for the 8:00pm reservation. It is ran by a husband and wife duo. BYOB and we brought sake from the Sake Shop in Kakaako. They let us pick our own cup too. Don't forget to offer him and his wife a shot of sake as well! We got started eating almost immediately. The time in between dishes was good enough for us to drink, talk stories, and watch the chef to make our food. All dishes was so good! I'm not even a big mackerel fan but I like how he prepared it. He mostly used the usual shoyu and sesame oil ingredients all throughout the omakase. I am pleasantly surprised at how he used yuzu to elevate the dish. Ordered the small, two-choice bowl with spicy mayo salmon and garlic shoyu ahi. I preferred the salmon to the ahi, both were fresh tasting. The spicy mayo sauce was thin and not very creamy. The ahi was a bit on the firmer side. They had a lot of included toppings (sesame, furikake, bubu arare, green onion) that did more for garnish than it did for taste. Tried this spot on my recent vacation to Oahu. It was an excellent omakase experience. 3 of us were at the Kailua location (in the same area as Cinnamon's). Parking meters in the lot there are supposedly enforced all the time, but we found free street parking (technically a meter but it was Sunday). The place is small and intimate, I think a max of 10-11 seats only. We had two chefs that night, I believe Chef Yutaka and someone in the reviews said his wife? But not confirmed bc I never heard them say anything like that... Both were friendly and gave us delicious dishes! Chef Yutaka focuses more on the raw fish nigiri pieces, and the other chef focused on appetizers/cooked dishes/other. We had about 16 dishes. Everything was delicious, but my faves are always toro, uni, hotate...and they still were! I also love chawanmushi and the shrimp miso. I'm so glad we were able to get a reservation and do their Omakase. In order to get an RSVP you need to message them on their website or inquire via email. Once that is done, they will reply to you with a number you can text. There were three choices of Omakase based on pricing, $100, $150, $200 tier. We went with the $150 tier. It was a super intimate experience. It was my fiancé and I and there was another couple. The sushi chef is from Japan and he was super informative about his preparation for each fish. He was a former Eel Sushi Chef in Tokyo. Aside from all that he kept us pretty entertained and his assistant was on point. I'd say there was at least 15 pieces of fish that was prepared for the two of us. I can't say you will get the same pieces as us because it could vary depending on what they catch / source. I must say all the pieces we had were amazing. Super fresh and buttery. Texture range from melt in your mouth to high quality freshness haha. I can't really explain! It was a great experience. He was very detailed about his craft and shared with us exactly what was put together. Omakase in Kailua! I had heard rumors of this spot for years. They've been around for 6-7 years already and originally opened on Oneawa near Zippy's. I heard of a coffee shop in the am that offered small table sushi at night but I could never find out how to make a reservation. Now, they're much more accessible. They are opened for poke bowls during the day and BYOB omakase in the evening. The chef is really sweet and knowledgeable. We decided to splurge on omakase for our wedding anniversary. This place is definitely a hidden gem--we pass it all the time but didn't realize it was there until someone else told us about it. It was kind of hard to make a reservation, which is sort of the charm of it. We liked how intimate it was, dinner seating at 8pm and 6 people total. There was one woman serving and one sushi chef placing the food. He was so professional and described each dish. It was so so delicious and the perfect way to celebrate. I think you could probably dress casually, but we wanted to dress up for the occasion and the sushi chef took a funny selfie with us afterwards, then offered to take our picture. Been to most of the omakases in Oahu, so was wondering how this spot maintained the highest average Yelp rating. It's the furthest out of town, so took a while to get around chance to check it out. Quality of food is not up to par frankly. The decor and ambiance are really cute and nice. Music is also nice for a date spot or a night out, but the fish quality was sub standard. One of the fish even tasted a bit fishy, meaning it was starting to spoil. For the price, it is probably the lowest value omakase on island from my experience. First omakase experience in Oahu! Found this place based on reviews online. It is BYOB which means they don't even serve water. Don't forget to bring your own! I booked about a week before. They don't have an online reservation system - you need to reach out to them to get their reservation number (I reached out via Instagram DMs). Then you have to text their number with your preferred dining times. If you have a party with 8 or more then you get the whole seating for just your party. Ended up getting the 8pm seating. Parking appears to be paid but upon entering the restaurant to ask for quarters we were told it was free! The dinner was VERY quick - it was probably about an hour. I just enjoyed an amazing dinner last night at this true hidden gem, treating my daughter and her newly "minted" fiancé to celebrate their recent engagement. The best parking is the municipal lot behind the bldg. with the entrance on Aulike Street next to U'ahi Grill. You can walk out the back of the lot and the bldg. is on the left of Zippy's. Bring your quarters because the meters do not take credit cards (or you can chance it). The dining area is located in the back of a small coffee shop that also doubles as a boutique store selling clothing and other knick-knacks during the day. The store is closed during the evening and the front door is locked (since it's only staffed by the chef) so you need to make sure you arrive a little early for your rez otherwise you could get locked out (as we were when we arrived a few minutes after our 8pm time). Fortunately after texting them and knocking on the door a bit, he came out to let us in. There was another couple already seated and had already started eating when we sat down. They only have two seating areas with room for six in one and eight in the other so their seatings can fill up pretty fast. If you follow them on IG, you can read everything you need to know about making your rez and the levels of Omakase they offer. Basically, you send them a DM via IG and they will send you their number then you text them back with your request of date, time and dollar level of Omakase that you want. They offer two seatings; 5:00pm and 8:00pm. with four levels of menu; $100, $150, $200 and $250 per person. The $200 and $250 require a week advance notice to accommodate the special items they need to order. I chose the $200 level and they were nice enough to "squeeze in" my rez for Friday @ 8pm even though I sent in my request on Sunday. Fortunately the other couple had signed up for the same level so they were able to accommodate us. They are BYOB so we brought three bottles of sake (ended up finishing two) so a good way to bring your fav beverage (while saving a bit of coin). The overall flow of dinner was terrific. Each dish was expertly prepared while you watch and the chef explains everything. The first course was sashimi so he provided the shoyu and wasabi. From that point on, he took away the shoyu dish since you didn't need it for the remainder of the dishes (if you still really want the shoyu and wasabi he will leave it for you but you really don't need it). I think I counted a total of twenty total items including hand-stirred ocha (green tea) in the traditional style using a bowl and bamboo whisk. Too many dishes to describe here so you will have to look at the photos and their descriptions but I will say it included Ootoro and foie gras as well as Wagyu Kobe beef. A definite must try that rivals places like Sasabune, Sushi Izakaya Gaku among others. I really want to try all their other levels now (especially the $250) and will definitely be back. read more

But to spread the aloha, I'm sharing this outstanding hole-in-the-wall Kaiseki Omakase experience located in Kailua on Oneawa St. Parking is an ish, but there are paid lots nearby or metered street parking. When you arrive, you'll be greeted by their sweet dog, Pualani. The inside is super cute - it almost looks like a former house that was converted into a coffee shop. It certainly doesn't look like a Japanese restaurant, yet they have two sushi bars in the back specifically set up for their Omakase dinners. The two sushi bars are small - they only accommodate 6-8 people. To make reservations, you need to text them at least a month in advance. Contact them on IG at @22Kailua to get their number. They have two seatings - 5:00pm and 8:30pm. They have two Kaiseki/Omakase dinners to choose from - one is $100 and the other is $150. All of the people in your party need to order the same one. The pricier one includes upgraded fish. My brother and I selected the $100 version, and it was mind-blowing! I can't even imagine what the $150 version tastes like. There is no menu - their motto is "trust us". The dishes included assorted sushi, assorted sashimi, steamed dish, simmered dish, broiled dish, deep fried dish, vinegar dish, appetizer and dessert. I can't even tell you how many dishes we got - I'd say at least 16! All of the fish was so fresh and every single dish was delicious and authentic. It's BYOB, so bring a nice bottle of sake or Japanese beer, and you'll be all set! The sushi chefs, Dustin and Malia, are incredibly nice and it's easy to become fast friends with them. We sat in front of Shaka Taka from Osaka and Utaka was at the other end. They were so fun and we had such a great time hanging out with the chefs! It's warm and inviting, so settle in for one of the best omakase. Chef Yutaka-san puts all of his experience into every dish/piece of sushi. It's his little touches, from the red vinegar mixed in the rice to the lemon zest for another layer of flavor, that transcend a traditional omakase to one worth closing your eyes and savoring each bite. In fact, the chawamushi with the unagi and layer of dashi was the best I've ever had, and I'm not typically a fan of the dish. This is the best omakase on the island. I've tried almost all of the most esteemed sushi restaurants, plus some of the newest ones, and this is the One. Service is immaculate. The simple Edo-style of sushi is exquisite. The atmosphere is very chicken and laid-back. When you go, you can't pick on a plate as your favorite because they're all so amazing. My partner surprised me with a birthday dinner here. When we showed up in front of a closed looking coffee shop for an 830 pm dinner, I was pretty confused. Like this place is obviously closed. One text later, we were ushered to a very private tiny sushi bar in the back. 22 Kailua is one of those places where someone tells you it exists, you follow on Instagram to find out when new dates come available, and have to dm them for the phone number to text to make an appointment. Despite all this, or possibly because of it, they have a loyal and steady stream of costumers. Dustin and Malia serve an omekase sushi menu that is beautiful and luxurious with delicate and bold flavors. We started off with a small plate of salmon and mackerel with seaweed salad. Next was meat and potatoes and beet poke. Then came a seemingly endless array of dishes one after the next. Each was gorgeously presented and delicious. A very fancy oyster, veggie sushi, wagyu beef, a savory custard (which sounds disgusting, but it was so good!!), the dishes just kept coming. Msged on fbook for the reservation number. Texted and gave two date options. Went with the $100 menu for 2. They responded in a few hrs and confirmed my 2nd date. Brought a 6 pack of Stella's for byob. Been to a few omakase's and this would top them all, esp for the price and byob. Total pieces was 15. More than we expected and were 90% (usually it's 50%). 20% is tip option number 1, but worth it. Will return next visit to the island. read more

We tried out 22Kailua last year in September! It was a little tricky to get a text reservation, but we ended up with a Sunday 8:30pm timeslot. Street parking is pretty easy. They share an interior with a coffee shop, and have a sushi bar set up in the back for the omakase experience. We loved chatting with Dustin and Malia throughout the meal. They served us a variety of goodies.
