We were on our way to the botanical gardens and wanted something quick for lunch. We got to Got'z Grindz just before they closed. There was some masubis left this late in the day. The staff were so nice! Even though they were were about to close, they informed me they could also make some if I was looking for a specific masubi. We got 5 masubis and some drinks. As we drove towards Kaneohe's Windward Mall from Kailua, we realized that we were in the mood for a mid-day snack. My wife did a quick internet search to see if she could find a place that has good musubi (breakfast of champions, and a perfect hunger-crusher in Hawaii). As it turns out, one of the more highly rated places was basically pretty-much exactly across the street from us as we drove. We looked over, but didn't immediately spot it. The store is actually kind-of unassuming--almost camouflaged. We whipped a U-ee , and started looking. Then, like an ancient pacific mariner, on a historic voyage, I raised Got'z Grindz from the Kamehameha highway. Our finding it was not exactly epic, but travelers are cautioned in their quest to find it, that the store's location happens to be on a turn in the road where the building next to it keeps it hidden from view until the very last second. As soon as we opened their front door I felt like Charlie entering Wonka's candy factory--except, instead of chocolates and gobstoppers, my eyes beheld a dizzying array of inari, fluffy rice, savory meats, soy sauces, and shiso spam. (Sing this next part to the tune of the Candyman by Sammy Davis Jr.) : "Who can take the sunrise?... sprinkle it with furikake. Cover it with Nori and a miracle or two? The musubi man! The musibi man at Got'z Grindz can, cause he mixes it with love and makes the world taste good. " (catchy, huh? I hereby give Gotz Grindz permission to use that song in any future commercials. ha.) We got the sampler pack (see photo below) and it was the perfect combination of both old favorites and of new flavor and texture combinations. This allowed our taste buds to boldly go where they had not gone before. My wife's favorite was the spicy tuna. I also very much liked it, but have a sweet spot in my heart reserved for the one with ume (pickled salted plum) in it. (My mom used to make rice balls with ume in them when I was a kid.) I thought the price for our 6 sampler's was pretty reasonable. The staff was super friendly and I really enjoyed the whole experience. While visiting Hawaii, my husband and I decided to explore the less touristy side of Oahu and was ready for lunch and stumbled upon Got'z Grindz online! It was a bit difficult to find, you really have to drive slow when you're on the street so you don't miss the building. Seeing the exterior you wouldn't expect to find so many different kinds of musubis neatly organized and displayed, plus we were greeted by a wonderful aroma and friendly staff! There were SO many musubis to choose from, not to mention the amazing smell coming from their beef stew, beef curry, gyudon, and more! We finally decided on Gyudon (Beef bowl), Spicy Tuna Musubi, and Tuna Takuan Furikake Inari. The beef in the gyudon was so soft and tender, the spicy tuna musubi was just the right amount of spicy and had nice soft fluffy rice, and the tuna inari was something new that I tried, and had some interesting flavors but all in all tastes great! Everything was so flavorful, so delicious, the portions were very generous and the prices were super affordable! Not to mention there's so many different options that you'll have to go back a few more times to try everything! Since the spot is more of a grab and go kind of place, the lady who helped us kindly recommended a nearby botanical garden which was great because musubis are the perfect for picnics! When I walked in, I was immediately struck by the sheer variety: around 30 different kinds of musubis lined the counter. It was a bit overwhelming to browse through each flavor, but definitely fun to explore. What We Tried - Variety pack with 6 different half musubis - A variety of random musubis - Cold ginger chicken - Karaage chicken - Salmon patty - Fish cake sticks - Salmon skin snack The rice was cooked perfectly - soft but not mushy. That said, I found the musubi fillings a bit too intense. The flavors were bold and layered, but sometimes felt muddled, making it hard to tell what was inside each one. It's a great spot if you're looking to sample a wide range of musubi styles, but for my taste, I prefer more subtle, balanced flavors. Price Point Everything pictured came out to about $60, which felt a bit pricey for musubi. But to be fair, the musubis here are packed with more ingredients than your typical grab-and-go version--so you're paying for the creativity. Final Thoughts Got'z Grindz is worth checking out for the novelty and variety, especially if you love trying new musubi combinations. Came by early morning to samps some musubi and have a few later for the beach. Their selection is great and the auntie at the counter was so friendly. The unagi was our fav, and the vegan spam was pretty solid but you can still tell it's mock meat from the texture. The tofu spam was really good too, with 'ono furikake! Always had this place in mind though never make it in time as they do close early at 1pm but because I had another place to visit I was in the area early enough and remember to give them a visit. Just pay attention because if you don't you'll pay right by but having their own lot makes parking a breeze the hardest part was to decide which bite to have though they do have it all out making it so easy to see and the choices they have is quite impressive though some may disagree I do like that it's not all rice though musubi isn't all that they have here it's like a okay's here as well with ochazuke made with Kyoto Matcha, and specials like hamburger steak and ginger pork bowl...how about a musubi sampler...you can even create your own musubi or bowls. its super spacious inside making it easy to browse and I got a goteborg and Portuguese sausage musubi along with garlic noodles. My dad has been talking about this place for some time, but the thing about people from Kaneohe, we don't go much outside our routes. But I'm glad we did when we had visitors from Osaka. The sheer variety of choices makes it a treat. Göteborg was a surprise, since that is where we have lived for 20 years and funny to see a Hawaiian interpretation of falukorv. I have been back 3x in the past month to try a different one each time. Onigiri really hits the spot when you get hungry but are on the go. Spicy karaage and the shiso spam were winners. If they have sold out from the display counter, you can order it fresh and hot while you wait. Everyone is very friendly, the staff, the owners, and the customers. Unfortunately I've gotten used to people just cutting in line but my last visit, everyone asked who was first and apologized if they had stepped in front of others I stead of pretending they didn't see them or thinking they are so entitled they should go before you. This is a great little bento & musubi shop off of Kam Hwy in Kaneohe. The exterior reminds me of a small little house. If you blink you might pass right by it, so be sure to keep your eyes open! There are parking spaces on the side of the shop. Upon entering, you'll find all kinds of musubi combinations. If you love musubi, you'll be in musubi heaven! They have a variety of creative ingredients, and some of the musubi's are named after their family members: Daddy G's, with bacon, cream cheese and shibazuke. Mommy G's, with okaka (smoked tuna), tempura flakes and green onion. Yumi G's, with bulgogi, kim chee and Korean nori. Miki G's, with ginger chicken. Mika G's, with sukiyaki and egg. I had read that the owner used to work for Musubi Cafe Iyasume, so that would explain the musubi craze at this shop. I was actually craving a beef bowl, and they certainly have a delicious one! You can choose between a mini or a regular. I was just taking it to the beach as a snack so I chose the mini for $7.75. The beef was so tender and it had great flavor! They also added red ginger to the bowl. Service is friendly and helpful. It wasn't busy when I arrived on a Wednesday, but they are probably packed on the weekends. Stopped by before spending some time in the nearby botanical gardens and got some food to go. It's a small quaint store and they sell a variety of Hawaiian goodies including bento boxes, musubis, and bowls. One of our friends ordered a musubi and hers took a little wait to get it but we opted for the Beef Stew and Beef Curry. Both the stew and the curry were very savory and flavorful but nothing out of the ordinary. It had that home-made taste to it which I liked and overall it was good. It might have just been my portion, but I only got 1 piece of beef in my whole bowl. Our friend enjoyed her musubi so next time I'd consider trying that instead. read more

This is the only musubi place in Kaneohe and it is pretty good. There are many options to choose from. I picked up a platter and sampler musubis to share with my coworkers. We just got the basic flavors but there are many other ones I want to try! The service was friendly and my order was ready when I picked it up in the early morning. There is a parking lot next to the building but there are huge pot holes. The inside of Got'z Grindz is just a take out area. No place to sit, just grab and go. As 2022 was coming to an end, I was on a mission to find a place to get ozoni to bring in the New Year. Thanks to a fellow Yelper, I came across Got'z Grindz's Instagram page where they offered take out for ozoni. Now, for all those who are not familiar with ozoni, it is a traditional Japanese soup served with mochi rice cakes to be eaten on the morning of the first day of the New Year to bring in prosperity and good health for the new year. I was able to pre-order my ozoni with no issues and the pick up was a breeze. The shop itself is nice and homey, like your mom and pop shops with their own private lot. Inside the shop you are greeted with a plethora of musubi, bentos, and other delicious foods that you can't resist. Yep, I could't resist either so I grabbed a few musubis and a salmon patty to take home and enjoy in addition to my order. The musubi's were very filling and had the right amount of rice and spam/salmon/tobiko/egg/avocado. The salmon patty had a good amount of flavor. As for the ozoni, I opted for the ready to heat at home option. They did include a little instruction sheet to cook your mochi which definitely came in handy. After warming up the soup and cooking the mochi, the broth brought a lot of umami flavor that you savored with every spoonful you ate. The service here was great. The staff is super friendly and super nice. Glad I made the choice to order ozoni. I'll be back here when I make another tip to Kaneohe. read more

Cute little musubi place on the side of the highway! We wanted to find a quick lunch somewhere in the area and stumbled upon this place. There's a parking lot right next to the shop. It wasn't too busy when we stopped by, around 11. It's a quaint shop with no seating, so you can just grab your food and go. I loved how welcoming the shop was, and I felt very at home with how warm the staff was and how cozy the shop is. We got somen and some musubi to try. I liked that the sampler was named after the family--it was cute. The price was very affordable, and the quality of the food was good. I really enjoyed the Miki G's--it was very reminiscent of arroz caldo. The somen noodles were refreshing. I think the musubis were delicious, but nothing too out of the ordinary. It's not "irasshaiimase" but "sup uncle". It's not "our rice comes from xyz prefecture" but "our rice come from da bag". It's not "we put a sprinkling of sesame seeds" but "get choke furikake". This is a LOCAL musubi shop for local taste. The rice is rice cooker correct. Sticky but not wet. No salt added instead relying on the fillings and toppings for the flavor kick. Good, chewy nori (can't be crisp as these are premade). Good compaction and molding. Not mochi but it's not gonna fall apart either. Room temp, fried items have gone soggy but the oil flavor has made the rice taste that much better. Lots of mix-ins, toppings, and fillings. If it says furikake, it's gonna be 10 percent furikake. Konbu, ume, salmon mixed with mayo all easily take up 1/3 of the musubi. Lots of interesting creations (unagi, egg, and avocado, bacon with cream cheese, unagi with avocado on spam, even char siu spam; get this). Other grab and go items available, ie, garlic noodles, yakisoba, mini bentos, kimpira. None sampled. Inexpensive by 2022 inflationary standards. Prices around $3.25/musubi. Super friendly local service. A grab and go spot that would be at home on any neighbor island, ready to satisfy local taste. read more

Anyway, the staff works in unison at taking your order and making your musubis. They're helpful and friendly. Today, the pre-made musbis were just about sold out. You can order from the wide selection that they offer. See Pic. Sorry, there are no pictures of the musubis I ordered. Overall, the two that I ordered were good. The crab avocado roll could have been better if it had more crab. Also bought the spicy salmon musubi. This was a bit spicy for me. I'm not really a rice eater. but these good. I noticed that they also sold caramel popcorn from my favorite popcorn shop (Island Poppers). Enjoy. read more
